X-arcade review 29 Dec 2002

XGaming released an arcade controller compatible with MS XBOX a few moths ago. We have been able to test & review the X-Arcade.
I've seen alot of "arcade-like" joysticks for home consoles , but honestly , this is the first one I touched that's so near the "real stuff".
The controller measures almost 60cm across by about 25cm deep and weighs over 4kg! With 9 buttons per player and 2 buttons for the 1/2 player selector you should have more then enough buttons for each game. The controller will of course also include 2 high precision joysticks molded exclusively for the X-arcade.

Other great feature of this controller is that you can connect it to pretty much everything. The X-arcade is sold with an adaptor for PC , but with the right adaptor (sold separately) you can connect the X-arcade to Xbox , Playstation2 , Gamecube , Dreamcast & Mac.
So if you have multiple consoles and you're a real hard-core gamer , this arcade controller is probably the ideal solution for your needs.

I invited 2 die-hard arcade freaks to test this baby. They played Dead Or Alive 3 (tecmo) for over 5hours ... and they both agreed that this is the first arcade controller for home consoles that really looks & feels like the real thing. The joysticks are very responsive and the buttons big , clicky and solid.
A nice feature is that you can change the sensitivity of the joysticks (by unscrewing the "lid" that covers the bottom). For example you can change the joystick from a 4-way to a 8-way.
We also tried the controller with Tetris Worlds and some games of MAME-X b6. Right now the compatibility with MAME-X b6 isn't perfect but the new version of MAME-X (somewhat later then expected due Superfro's hard drive crash) will be 100% compatible with the X-arcade for 100% MAME-fun on Xbox.

Of course , it's very important to check the strength of both buttons and joystick, so we decided to play some "intensive" Tetris World games. Believe me , the controller did suffer ... both buttons & joysticks have been "under attack" for 2-3 hours and they all survived without any problem ... so I really don't think you have to worry about the quality of the X-arcade.

So , is it all that perfect? Well actually ... pretty much , there's just one downside ... the price. 179USD for the X-arcade with Xbox adaptor and 29.95USD per extra adaptor will probably reserve this controller for the real die hard gamers. But you pay for what you get , this is no small plastic controller "made in Taiwan" that will break down after you played 2hours. You pay for quality , so if you got the money and you love arcade games this is the controller you need.
They now also sell an X-arcade for 1 player ("X-Arcade Solo One Player Controller") for 99.95USD.
Also note that once MAME-X b7 is released this controller will become a real must-have for the fans. You can of course also connect it to PC and play the PC version of MAME.
