OzXBios (Cromwell) 1.26a
>> We received this information from OzXChip:
OzXChip is proud to present a customized version of the Cromwell bios for distribution with the OzXChip modchip, it has been changed to incorporate a modchip flashing feature that requires a CD with BIOS.BIN to be inserted in the XBox's DVD-Rom drive. Once a CD is inserted into the drive the bios looks for a BIOS.BIN file and if it is found it will flash this onto the modchip (provided it has flash support in the bios for the modchip type), if the BIOS.BIN file is not found (or is the wrong size) the bios will attempt to boot Linux off the CD.
This release is similar to the Xodus Cromwell bios that is being shipped with the Chameleon although it is based on the much more stable version of Cromwell 1.26 and contains no code from the Xodus release.
At present OzXBios should work with modchips based on the following flashroms: SST - SST49LF020 (OzXChip, Matrix & Cheapmods) AMD - Am29F080B FUJITSU - MBM29F080A Hynix - HY29F080ST -M29F080A (TSOP) Sharp - LHF08CH1 (v1.2 TSOP)
Included in the download is a PDF file showing the correct method used to create the BIOS.BIN CD, please note that it differs from the BIOS.BIN CD required for OzXFlash.
Is this the end for OzXFlash? No, we still see a need for OzXFlash and it needs a bit of a revamp so keep an eye out for a new release in the next few days!
OzXBios sources will be released as soon as The Mad Maragan can clean up his messy code!
WARNING - This is an alpha release so please do not attempt to use this bios unless you have a means of recovery such as a external programmer.
More about new v1.3 Xbox
>> Ubergeek (Team Xecuter) posted more information about the new Xbox version on our forums:
I have an xbox that is now known as the v1.3 due to the fact that it has a posssible new RC4 key / MCPX makeup
I reported the news to xbox-scene about a week ago due to a few suspicions and today I can confirm the suspicions are correct.
Manufacture Date: 21st March 2003 DVD Drive: Philips Hard Drive: Seagate ST310014ACE Kernel version: 5101.01 Dashboard version: 4920.01 MCPX X3: FB0308.1 0246D1 (Yes thats right its called X3 lol ) Flash Rom Device: Winbond 49F020T 256k
I can confirm that the xbox boots to LPC on d0 > ground, however FRAGS on current bios versions, indicating change of RC4.
I dumped the bios after removing and reading in my programmer to find that it has a very similar header and makeup to the v1.1 but it will not unpack with the current RC4 keys. I must note that the programmer would not read the flash rom correctly as a 49F020T - it seemed to throw up a range of errors (very unusual perhaps some new form of protection? or perhaps I was a little drunk when dumping - who knows ?) This was easily worked around as the programmer / software is our own build so didn't take too long to get what we wanted.
So now we are dumping the MCPX with our own tried and tested methods (you may remember we dumped the v1.0 and v1.1 MCPX previousley)
Hopefully this is successful and we will of course unpack the new v1.3 kernel and create a new bios. It will either be a new X2 version (if the generic bootloader is indeed generic to this version) or we shall simply proceed with the X3 series.
Another interesting part of the thread: BenJeremy: "Also interesting is that the multi-boot trick is not working, since a simple RC4 change should not effect it, right? It used a method to bypass the loader altogether, IIRC. I guess M$ **DID** learn from that release. Have you tried the other alternative 'back door' method, that hasn't been released to the general public? " Ubergeek: "M$ learnt from the released generic bootloader - they also found the other backdoor from this - both are now plugged. I have every faith we'll get the RC4 though - we've not been stopped before"

Castle Wolfenstein level designer ... help needed
>> From xF|uX (Team Xbins) & xbShmoe (MOD):
Almost everyone who has Xbox Live owns Castle Wolfenstein, and most of you enjoy the levels that came with it. On June 5, ID released there new level for online play which revealed a lot of information on how they are doing "live" content. We have successfully made a level desginer for Castle Wolfenstein but with only one prob in mind: online play. The problem being that there is a key hidden with a plain text file under the Tdata/60010/ folder. We need help finding that key and ask anyone to help to release this news to the scene. It will allow custom multiplayer maps for system link play.
If you can help them, contact them on zaq23edc@yahoo.com.

Work In Progress: defragger and chkdsk for Xbox (Avalaunch 0.47)
>> From 'the joker' on forums.xbox-scene.com:
"FATX is autodefragged" *wrong! it's in fact designed so poorly, it's actually as fragmented as it's possible to get it. If you delete a 16k file, the next file you put in - will cover that 16k slot quite fast - no matter what sized it is.
sooooooooo.... that means we'll need to make this. And to make a reliable defragger - one need a chkdsk as well.
We've started on these things, and had to do a LOT of research upfront ( thanks to JJ btw - we wouldn't even gotten started without your help ). The defrag class is already made and it has loaded all the info it needs. Now we just gotta make sure noone looses all info on their drives hehehehe
And yea.... don't expect this feature in 0.46, we're wanting 0.46 out now - so new features is pushed a bit back. But for 0.47 this will be a high priority, now that we see how things are set up.
Microsoft Cuts Xbox Costs?
>> From gamers.com:
Microsoft has "aggressive plans" to cut costs of products in its Xbox division, reports the Dow Jones newswire, citing internal communications by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer. Such plans are apparently a footnote to more significant concerns regarding Microsoft's future PC operating systems and increasing competition from free and open-source software, but the financial drain of the Xbox is no doubt a factor in Microsoft's plans for the coming years, given that the Xbox business has been operating in the red since its inception.
Exactly what Microsoft's cost-cutting plans might be remains unclear, but we'll likely learn more through the rest of the year.
Xbox 1.5 rumours gather speed in Japan
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
A number of Japanese magazines are reporting that Microsoft is moving ahead with plans to release a redesigned Xbox, dubbed "Xbox 1.5", which will come in a significantly smaller case than the original model.
Weekly magazine WAM has reported that the new system will be launched alongside the MMORPG True Fantasy Live in Japan later this year - a move which would make sense, given that True Fantasy Live is one of Microsoft's key hopes for invigorating sales of the Xbox in that territory.
Also reporting on the new Xbox is respected Japanese games magazine Dorimaga, which speculates that the forthcoming hardware revision is the reason why Japan has not seen an Xbox price cut in the last few months - with the price of the old hardware expected to drop when the new version appears on the market.
Many commentators fully expected Microsoft to unveil a revised version of the Xbox hardware at E3, following long-running criticism of the bulky casing of the console. It's not expected that any changes will be made to the internals of the system, however - this is, by all accounts, a purely cosmetic makeover.
XBConnect 3.0 and X-Link Messenger RC1 both delayed
>> Both tunneling programs were expected saturday and they have both been delayed.
From http://www.xbconnect.com (XBConnect 3.0):
Today we had scheduled the release of XBC 3.0. The program team has implemented all the bug fixes. However we feel that 3.0 and the 3.0 server have not been stress tested to the level we want before going to public release. So here is the plan. Instead of going with full release today, we will slowly add users each day with the 3.0 beta. And then go to full release in a few days. We just want to get a little more testing done to ensure it's the best XBC ever. Thanks for your understanding
From http://www.xboxlink.co.uk (X-Link Messenger RC1):
RC1 has been delayed for 2/3 days. There are two reasons. 1.) There are still certain problems which are being resolved with the client, and 2.) We have decided to add a couple of new features at the last minute. We're sorry that she isn't with you on time - but please understand, we want XLink to be all that you expect, and we cannot risk a bad release at this point. Be assured, as soon as we have the RC ready for you, you will be the first to know...
Cxbx 0.7.1
>> From caustik on http://www.caustik.com:
Released another version of Cxbx. This version will play the lights demo from the XDK graphics tutorials. I have also added video configuration, including multimonitor support. To all the people who did not believe Xbox emulation was possible: How do you explain the fact that Cxbx is capable of running XDK samples not only at 100% 1:1 speed, but with increased resolution abilities? :-)
There is now a .zip file of some currently working Xbox demos on the xbins ftp. Visit #xbins on EFNET IRC to get these. They are under XBOX->Apps->Demos->CxbxDemos.zip. Enjoy! Try hooking up your Xbox controller using one of the adapters available from codeunderground.com, then hook up your TV over S-Video, then use the Multimonitor support in Cxbx, and just *TRY* to tell the difference between the real Xbox and Cxbx!
