Interview with Xeon author _SF_
>> From Keith and Sandy from http://www.efx2.com..
This time around our Spotlight is going to focus on a newcomer to the development scene. He's an American known as _SF_ and he is making big waves in Xbox emulation. Now we will unmask the man behind Xeon(info), one of the hottest topics around the scene. As a fan he initially starting using emulation with Nintendo 64, and Gameboy Emulators. It wasn't until later down the road that he became interested in development. Not interested in older system emulation _SF_ wanted try something new and more challenging. The Xbox gave him a perfect opportunity to try out his coding skills which were previously non emulation related, as well as develop his knowledge of Direct3D and other Windows APIs. _SF_ feels that older generations of consoles seem to have been emulated almost to perfection, and that the latest generation has seen little progress in regards to actually playing games. He hopes to contribute in the development of the next generation emulators with is current Project Xeon.

Quite pleased with the support he has received so far for Xeon which is in the primitive stages of development, _SF_ hopes to improve it a lot in the future, especially in regard to compatibility. One of his best experiences came the first time he was able to run Halo in Xeon even though the emulator was very incomplete. Although he made a lot of mistakes in early development by focusing on the wrong aspects of the emulator he was neither discouraged nor surprised since he was new to emu development. Though he cannot single out any complement he has received so far he greatly appreciates the people that have dealt with Xeon's issues and kept a positive outlook. Rather then focusing on useless negative feedback he chooses to ignore it and not become discouraged.

Xeon is progressing well, though it's going to be difficult isolating and fixing all of the graphics bugs. It's possible that within a few months Halo and a few other games will be playable, though it's hard to tell. He is very interested in other next generation consoles and would be quite happy to start work on a different system once he loses interest in Xeon. He is working on another project which can not be revealed at this time. He is generally satisfied with his current work even though he admits he has made a lot of mistakes since this is his first project. Since Halo works very well internally within the emulator he would like to have better graphics without as many bugs. While currently not working with anyone he feels he will probably need to join other developers in order to deal with the limitations that Xeon has. When all is said and done and he moves on from emulation _SF_ hopes to be remembered for the quality of his emulators. _SF_ would like to thank all of the people that support Xeon, as well as caustik for some of the documentation and ideas which helped him early on.

Sandie and Keith would like to give a big thanks to _SF_ for helping with this article and wish him lots of luck with his current and future projects.

Why no '007AUFInstaller' ?
>> I found a quite interesting thread on the Xbox-Linux mailinglists:
Q (by Kris H.): I was wondering, will there also be a version for the 007 agent under fire?
Are there more techinical problems, cause AFAIK it's basicly the same exploit?
I believe that people who bought this game for the purpose of running linux would welcome it.

A (by Michael S.): MechAssault has been chosen for the MechInstaller(info) project because it includes the dashboard ("online"/"live") update on the DVD. So
* the Linux installer can force an upgrade/downgrade of the dashboard to a specific (known-good) version
* uninstallation simply means to foce another dashboard installation.
007 doesn't have the dashboard update on the DVD, so this cannot be done this way.

Gentoox Stardust v1.1
>> ShALLaX released a new version of Gentoox Stardust(info):
As promised - here is the new Stardust release! The main new feature is 128mb RAM support (for those brave enough to add extra RAM to their Xboxes!). Other fixes include preinstalled mkfs.fatx (saved downloading it each time you boot the CD), a new BIOS that allows you to select HDD or CD boot from one BIOS - this means you'll never get stuck if you mess up your Gentoox installation.

There are some cosmetic fixes during initial boot up. The default.xbe on the CD is now Xromwell, Cromwell(info)/Xromwell now make the X-pad rumble on boot (this might make it easier for those blindly booting Linux - so they know its actually loading). The Stardust CD can now be used to launch an installed Gentoox system. Xromwell and Cromwell files are included on the CD for users who wish to change their bootloader. The files (available as .bin and .xbe) are as follows:
640x480-64mb
640x480-128mb
800x600-64mb
800x600-128mb

Sorry if all of this hardly makes any sense. Its almost 6am and I've been working on this solid since 10pm. See the README.txt for more information!

PlayStation 2 Independence: The PS1DRV Hack
>> "I have released a binary and source package that exploits a flaw in the PS2's handling of a special configuration file. This configuration file, named TITLE.DB, is accessed from the PS2 PS1 driver (located at rom0:PS1DRV)."

"To make a long story short, the exploit allows anyone with a memory card and a valid, legal PS1 disc to hijack the boot process and run any piece of code. Absolutely no modification to the system is necessary to use the exploit (my only working PS2 is not moddded, and I have developed and tested the exploit on this machine). All one really needs is a way to send the files to the memory card to enable the exploit."

Thanks to MAGE, XS Moderator for the news. "I think even though it isn't xbox related it is important news in console hacking, since it is the first major ps2 no-mod hack really."

Will Xbox Next use a Pentium M?
>> From theinquirer.net:
A CHINESE WEB SITE claims that the Xbox Next will use a special version of Intel's Pentium M, it said.

That followed news yesterday that ATI and Microsoft, as earlier predicted, will cooperate together on the design of the Xbox.
Sources yesterday told the INQUIRER that the ATI deal with Microsoft includes a royalty deal that will mean the Canadian firm scoops up money "quarter after quarter", and isn't necessarily dependent on sales of the Xbox.
That indicates a closer relationship with Microsoft than the one between Nvidia and the software firm, which was, to put it mildly, troubled.

MechInstaller howto + FATX version *updated*
>> From xbox-linux.sourceforge.net:
Detailed MechInstaller(info) howto and easy-to-use MechInstaller FATX images available. Download the FATX images here and read the tutorial here. For Windows Users, there is a simpler addon tool too.

With this FATX image of the MechInstaller you can now easily transfer the hacked gamesave on a PC USB stick under Linux so your xbox can load it (no need to add fatx support to your OS).
All info on how to do this is in the tutorial (by Michael Steil)

update: Xbox-Linux added the win32 'addon tool'. OzXMemory (by http://www.ozxchip.com) will allow to write to your PC USB Pen with FATX support. So you can just move the MechInstaller-FATX-version directly from your PC to your USB Pen. (must be FATX-formatted on your xbox first ofcourse)

NeoGenesis v8
>> From Xport on forums.xbox-scene.com:
NeoGenesis(info) Sega Genesis/Megadrive/32X/SegaCD/MegaCD Emulator for XBox v8

What's New:
- 480p, 720p, 1080i support
- 4x varieties for all filters
+ Most of these 4x filters make the games run too slow to be enjoyable, but the AdvanceMame4x runs well and so do a few others.
+ I also suggest not using the 4x filters unless you can use 720p or 1080i modes. Scrunching a 1280x960 picture to half that size looks almost exactly the same as the 2x version (and perhaps a little worse because of the scrunching.)
- Hardware filtering options : Point, Bilinear, Trilinear, Anisotropic
- Access new video options from Main Menu -> Configuration -> Video Configuration
- Re-vamped the 50/60, tearing, jittery sound, etc. Hopefully this should straighten out all the weird, misc bugs a few people have encountered when trying to play PAL games on NTSC XBox or vice versa.

MP3 FAT-X Renamer
>> From xboxmediaplayer.de:
MP3 FAT-X Renamer 0.75b by CRP is a new Win32 application (coded in Delphi) which allow you to transfer (and synchronize) your MP3 collection from your computer to the Xbox's build-in hard drive. The program has a integrated FTP-client that connects directly to XBMP's integrated FTP-server and transfers all the files and folders you select, but what makes this program unique is that is auto re-names all MP3 files (and the folders they are in) on-the-fly during transfer making them compatible with the FAT-X* naming convention. The original MP3 files & folders remain untouched during this process. See the readme.txt for more information. (*Foot note: FAT-X, the Xbox file system only support 42 characters and do not support many foreign letters or odd characters (more info on this in the XBMP FAQ).

I am sure by now most of you have heard of the new xbox emulator just released, named "Xeon". From the screenshots I have seen, it is very impressive. Halo is apparently playable, although I have not been able to verify this myself. I hope that _SF_ will contact kingofc and myself, so that we can work together to get playable games happening very quickly. This is very exciting news for the emulation scene, and I want congratulate _SF_ on his work.

Recently, two of my hard drives became corrupted, and I lost alot of data. I hope to recover this data very soon so I can continue work on Cxbx. In the meantime, enjoy the new toy, and look forward to seeing Halo supported by Cxbx in the near future!

News from X-link
>> We received this news from the X-Link crew:
* Xlink / Bo-XLink / XBC-Link unified release has been finally scheduled for the end of August. This date will not change, and includes extra time for us to complete testing.

* Thanks to some nice work from some of our newest crew members, we're proud to annouce 3 new sites for your gaming pleasure.. http://www.xboxladder.com for all your gaming ladder needs, http://xtourney.netfirms.com for NTSC tourneys, and http://www.xboxradio.com if you wanna relax with some muzak. Although X-Link is gonna be hosting it's tourneys when we release, all our stuff is 0 cash.. and we all know the real fun is in paying your money and taking your chance.. so this shit is for all you ppl who think your l33t... bring it..

* XBC-Link. Well, as the xbconnect crew consider modboxers below them, we've decided to produce our own xbox based version of XBC. Nothing here is illegal, and in future this app will allow you to connect to and control ANY app which you currently run on your PC.. Alpha signups are being taken right now on support@xboxlink.co.uk. This stupid animosity between our two crews has gone on too long - but the simple truth is that hundreds of thousands of users of both tunnels have modded boxes, so if they want to run their tunnels from their box they should be able to. XBC are not willing to produce such a tool.. so we've done it for them.. although it's semi-restricted and loaded up to hell with ads for X-Link :D

* Finally, a note to developers. The OpenXL classes will be after XLink RC2 Omega. How long? As long as it takes for the first "round" of devs who have been helping us until this point to get finished with it.. Avalaunch and a few game devs.. Once this is done, the classes will be made public. Hope you understand why we're doing this - we gotta respect the ppl who help us do what we do..

Halo on your PC ?
>> It appears that a _SF_ has been working on a xbox emulator similiar to cxbx

From the readme:
Xeon is an X-Box emulator for the PC. Currently it supports one commercial game, and support for more will be added in the future along with other features.

---------- Compatibility:
Halo (NTSC version only)

---------- Requirements:
Windows XP
DirectX 9.0a
Pentium 3/Athlon XP processor
Recommended graphics card: GeForce FX/Radeon 9200 Pro or higher

---------- Instructions:
Extract all of the files to some directory. You will need an ISO image of the game you want to run. Since ISO reading is not implemented yet, you will need to use a tool such as xISO (www.yursoft.cjb.net) to extract all of the files in the ISO. Make sure to preserve the directory structure inside the ISO file when extracting. Start up Xeon.exe and select File->Load XBE. Navigate to the directory where you extracted the ISO and select the default.xbe file. You can also supply the XBE filename as a command-line argument to Xeon.exe and it will be loaded automatically.

---------- Credits:
caustik for XBE file documentation
Datarescue for their excellent disassembler, IDA
Now, this has yet to be tried and tested extensivly, but a few people have confirmed getting halo to run on their pc with various results (some with full menu's and a few sounds, some with garbled graphics).

Please test this if your pc meets the requirements and give some feedback. You can view the original thread at http://www.ngemu.com/forums
and if you dont feel like registering there, you can post at the http://forums.xbox-scene.com to give your feedback. Please dont hammer with such questions like "Is this real?", try it out for yourself and see.

Cartographer 1.0 Beta 3
>> What's new/fixed:
* Redesigned front-end. I decided that it would be nice to see the
elements directly in the editor. Double-clicking a combination still
brings up the same element editor.

* Added support for new elements. No new functionality here except that
it now displays information about the 'unknown' elements from the
earlier 'AllMaps' update.

* All maps are now supported in the release package. You do not need to
download a separate ctg file at this time.

* See the project site for more upcomming additions.

Gentoox website update
>> The Gentoox website now switched to PHP-Nuke:
Gentoox now uses PHPnuke for the main site - this should make the site a lot cleaner and easier to maintain! All old news will be discarded since it would take far too long to add it all + most of it is now useless anyway! All the tutorials, FAQ's and links have been added. The forums and downloads can be found under "Extra Sections". Sure - the site pretty much uses the default template, but hell - all the information is still there! The "Links & Developer" Section now holds all of the source files (which are now nicely catalogued!). It also holds links to external sites of interest. Let me know what you think of the site by voting on the poll!

For PAL put region.cfg in same folder as xbe (and PAL in file).

only bloodgulch is supported yet.
A new file labled 'All Maps' has been added to the project site. Download it and extract into the Cartographer directory to enable editing of all maps!

The executable will need to be updated tonight because several new element types were found. Until then, they will simply show up in Cartographer as 'Unknown'.

Please be aware that I haven't had a chance to fully test the new additions... so use the new file at your own discretion.

Police are looking for a man sporting a beer belly after a lorry-load of handsets and consoles worth £780,000 (1,250,178USD or 1,105,135EUR) vanished on Monday

Police have appealed for help after 7,000 mobile phones and 1,000 Xbox consoles were stolen in Wednesbury, near Wolverhampton (UK), on Monday.
West Midlands Police said that a Scania lorry containing 7,000 Nokia handsets, and over 1,000 Xboxes, went missing at around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday after being parked outside a Carphone Warehouse store.

The Xboxs are worth some £130,000 (208,321USD or 184,250EUR) -- and a substantial reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

The only things not read out of the files are private "item name" entry names. So if you use this, paste them in afterwards.

After much delay, I've added some PROPER forums to the site. I now use phpBB which should be infinitely faster, more stable and easier to use (yes, we now have categories!). Unfortunately it is impossible to transfer all existing posts from the old forums to phpBB so we'll all have to work extra hard to refil the forums again! On a side note, abuse of the forums will NOT be tolerated. Anyone found doing anything other than normal, legitimate use will be banned by host without question, my decision is final regarding any issues. (Note, you need to register to use the forums!)

Also, I've added a couple more controllers to the Xpad source, if your controllers weren't working before try recompiling the kernel (magic fix kernel-2.4.20 && magic) then try again!!

Maxconsole.com: what are the upcoming features of Xlink?

Xlink: The RC2 client fixes loads of little problems with the RC1 version, and adds, amongst other things, support for homebrew games, more flexible voice support, massively improved Messenger / Rooms mode, MUCH faster communication with the XServer, support for users behind unconfigurable proxies (like university NAT's) and, of course, Bo-XLink support.
