XBOX tempts Japan via new site
>> From ferrago.com:
Xboxarcade.jp (for those of you that can read Kanji), is Microsoft's latest desperate attempt to woo Japanese gamers, this time by highlighting the new console ports heading to the Xbox on this new website. Mini-games, downloads, images and extensive game details are available on a variety of new titles, including AlfaSystem's arcade blaster Castle of Shikigami II, Guilty Gear XX #Reload and Metal Slug 3. An area of the new site titled X-Arena also hints at some form of interactive area which isn't quite live yet, and these new arcade-inspired releases will include special content made available to Japan's (so-far) limited number of Xbox Live players. Has The Xbox Failed In Japan?
>> From simoniker games.slashdot.org:
Thanks to GameSpy for its article interviewing Microsoft executives about the Xbox's popularity in Japan. According to the article, 400,000 is the 'magic number': "...the number of Xbox consoles Microsoft has sold in Japan since launching the system in February, 2002. It is roughly the number of copies of Grand Theft Auto that Capcom has sold into the Japanese market. And, historically speaking, it is the approximate number of 3DO consoles in Japan as well." Apparently, "'That is the yogei-acceptable number in Japan'. [The term "yogei" refers to foreign or Western.]" However, Mike Fischer of Microsoft suggests that "game developers are tired of Sony's dominance in the market, and that that more Japanese-appropriate hardware will lead to better sales in Japan which will lead support from companies like Square/Enix which will then lead even greater acceptance in Japan." Xbox Live Downtime for start LIVE3.0 implementation
>> From gigex.com:
It was revealed on the official Xbox forums recently that Xbox Live will be experiencing some downtime soon for the ongoing Tsunami update. The downtime, which will take place on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 6:01am(PT), is expected to last for 24 hours.
The much talked about Tsunami update will be partly implemented at this time and will see some, but not all of the new features put to use. Until developers take advantage of the new Tsunami features, the Xbox Live experience won't change that much, but the server side implementation is a necessary step. It is also reported that the anticipated MSN messenger integration will not be included in the upcoming update, but that it will take place at a later date.
More news about Xenium OS v2
>> From ozxodus.com:
Looks like the ante in the "competition" stakes has been upped considerably with the usual, "anything you can do I can do better", banter being thrown around. Welcome back! We missed you. Honestly. Not many teams can take our jests and jokes and provide the quality competition this industry deserves. (Once we get these clown fakers dead and buried we can then concentrate on the REAL STUFF) Besides that, fun times have already been here in case you had not noticed! So let's play! Since we have an ACTUAL product to play with, we will go first. (as usual).
Innovation is not that easy, it seems, in our little world of reality. Playing with colors is neither unique nor THAT difficult to do. We must learn to walk before we can run and 4th generation is a privilege that must be EARNED and proven before we can brand ourselves anything we dream up!
With that being said, here are a few more ideas being developed on OUR fourth generation chips, that are out and working (well at least the genuine ones are:-)) Once again, we're not mentioning even half of what is possible under our new system, but it should be more than enough to wet your appetite, and keep those amateur spin video makers busy?
First... We know that some of you have had problems in the past with the fact that our chip offers less flash space than some competitors, and possible future competitors. We can't say too much without giving things away, but we've resolved these concerns with our new Flash Unconstrained Core Kernel Initialization Technology. Combined with our Dynamic Bios Cooking Technology, we're quite confident that you'll never have to worry about flash space again!
Not enough? We are also pursuing the possibility of Post-Boot Onboard Flash Access which, among other things, will allow certain recovery techniques which were previous only possible with hardware, and involved tricky soldering. It would now be done completely from software! We must also remember dear friends that our LEGAL OS is... well.....exactly that; legal. Just to hot things up a bit more. Release date? Let’s just say that we have a track record for fulfilling promises professionally and efficiently. So, release date for beta? Soon. Very soon!
CNN about emulator
>> CNN posted an article about emulators. They also talk a bit about the Xbox (with some obvious errors):
If you want a reasonably priced arcade-type system for your home, emulator programs are a fun way to bring back old-school games -- so long as you do it legally. "The emulating programs themselves are legal. They only set up your PC to play the game," says Crispin Boyer, senior editor of Electronic Gaming Monthly. "ROMs, or the game programs, are technically illegal unless you buy or download a licensed version. Otherwise the content creators aren't really being compensated. Nobody has successfully sued yet though."
"The older '80s arcade games are generally the most popular. But as PCs become more powerful, there are emulator programs for PlayStation and Xbox, too," Boyer says. "Those aren't recommended though. It's almost the same thing as pirating software, like downloading songs from Napster. You're downloading someone else's intellectual property for free." Console companies also are launching pre-emptive strikes against emulators. "Once you hack into an Xbox, you can't play Xbox Live online anymore," Boyer adds. "Microsoft is always trying to stay one step ahead. Although hackers always find new ways too, it's a constant war."
More Xecuter3 News
>> From TeamXecuter.com:
Due to popular demand here is another sneak peak at some of the X3 Config Live features. This video shows the new color picker system that we have integrated so you can easily change all your flubber and X logo colors. All sources have been coded to accept RGB values. Please also note the camera angle selector. You can choose between 15 different camera angles for the flubber animation - or you can set it as random :)
The new FTP server (both static and DHCP with Boost mode) and the new webserver have also been included and tested successfully. Download the Video Here (4Mb)
Also in advanced production is the new X3 PC System (replacing X2BM). Using many new methods you will also be able to completely control the X3 mod and Config Live features from your PC - we are also giving you more advanced bios setup options than ever seen before and also our own new ISO building functions. Many more features are being included which "competition" forbids us to reveal at this stage - However you have seen the 4th Generation mods that control your Mod and Your Xbox - however we feel X3 is a new 5th Generation - as we also completely control the Bios from the Xbox AND from the PC - on the fly !
Development is now at a fast pace as all of the bugs mentioned last week have been resolved - fun times ahead !
Xenium OS v2.0 Teaser1
>> Team OzXodus released more information about the upcoming Xenium OS(info) v2. From ozxodus.com:
REDEFINING THE WORDS "INTERFACE" AND "USER FRIENDLY" We have a fully revamped User Interface with specific features never possible before. Ease of use and set up will be a breeze. In fact, we have redefined the whole x-box to pc communications with different and unique methods, services and interfaces that you could only have dreamed of before! Ftp support is fully integrated and therefore hassle free. (Unlike some current archaic systems). Web support will include more power and flexibility than anything available at the moment. Of course, with us, being us, that would not be enough to WOW you, and competition does not allow us to reveal all, but lets just say that there are one or two more surprises that will make your life even easier and will provide for even more ubiquitous communications between your X-box and PC. Wish lists from all of you in forums and mails have been answered, will be made possible, and then some! If that is not enough to excite you and get you drooling there will be more to come!
P.S. Super Crypt Stealth ACT System has caused quite a stir already and we are sure that its inclusion in previous versions of Xenium OS as well as the newly re-boosted version set for Xenium OS2 will be very well received and appreciated.
XBMC for PC
>> I think this is the first port from Xbox to PC (Windows). Some people of the XboxMediaCenter(info) crew have ported their program to PC. This does of course NOT mean any end to XBMC for Xbox whatsoever!
You can find more information about it in this forum thread[xboxmediaplayer.de]. There have been already several 'test' releases the last few days. The last release is 'XBMC_PC 12-04-2004_2'. Changelog of this release: * general : fixed : fullscreen mode * general : added : auto hide mouse cursor * setup : fixed : added option to select internal or external movie player * my mymusic : fixed : retrieving album art didnt load all tracks * my mymusic : fixed : retrieving album art didnt work for some albums * my mymusic : fixed : double albums if album was located in multiple folders * general : fixed : nasty scaling bug in the skin engine * general : added : onscreen keyboard * my mymusic : added : save playlist to .m3u playlist * my video : added : manual imdb * my pictures : added : seperate view/sort settings for root shares & folders * Also last minute addition is calibration. Default is a pixelratio if 1. So on LCD monitors it will all look fine. * But on TV's 4:3 or 16:9 you need to calibrate. The square you will see during one of the calibration steps should be peerfectly square. Measure with a ruler. * This correction is applied on pictures, thumbnails etc. I think it is not yet used on video

The contest purpose is to get a more diverse amount of skins for XBMC and hopefully in turn this will also encourage more graphic artists to keep making unique skins for Xbox Media Center. Project Jihad update
>> From theunprofessional.com:
So it's been almost a year and JIhad still isn't done. It was been a fascinating year. I went from a head programming job, 2 months from receiving partial ownership, to starting my own business. During the past year, my partners are I have built a business. We're not rich, nor are we really making any money but we're doing well and the future looks bright.
For everyone out there wondering why this is taking so long-- that's why. Many don't know what it takes to run a business. It involves extremely long hours, and usually no pay. At the moment I have one small source of income, and I'm working everday from about 10am to 1am (14 hours). But Jihad is in my heart, and I work on it whenever I can spare time. That "spare time" is increasing. My passion to get this project done only gets stronger. It will be completed.
Jihad is an arcade/adventure game that represents The unProfessional's first attempt at a complete Xbox title. The game is designed to be a free, fun, multiplayer homebrew game for everyone to enjoy. Official Site: http://www.theunprofessional.com
Halo Map Tools v3.5
>> MonoxideC released the last and final version of his Halo Map Tools(info). What's new/fixed: * [Blank Space injector] You can use this to add chunks of blank space to an extracted metadata file. It'll automatically correct the offsets in the XML. This is a tool for the l33t modders out there that need such a thing. If you don't know how it could be useful, then chances are you don't have a use for it. But if you're one of those super l33t few, you could probably pull off cool things like.. adding a new seat to a vehicle, or secondary fire to a weapon that doesn't have it. * [Model De-Crapper] When you rebuild a map with new models, their vertex and index data doesn't exist, and their meta points to the wrong place. This will fix that problem and create a new bsp chunk for you at the same time. The result? You're models will actually look like they should! *GASP* BONER! DIE! * [Extract Range] This will let you recursively extract a manually specified range of data from a map. This is a very helpful part of SP to MP conversion. You can then manually set an index build offset when you rebuild a map. * [Misc things] There are some bug fixes and a new feature that shows your recently opened maps on the file menu so you can just choose one instead of having to browse for it.

True Fantasy Live Online - Still Xbox's Killer MMO App?
>> From simoniker on games.slashdot.org:
Thanks to XBN for its in-depth preview of Level 5's Japanese-developed Xbox MMORPG, True Fantasy Live Online, the long-in-development Microsoft funded title which is finally "hitting Xbox Live in early summer 2004." The piece points out that Level 5's RPG portfolio "...is stunningly impressive; in addition to Microsoft's Fantasy, the studio is developing the Dark Cloud series for Sony and Dragon Quest VIII for Square Enix", before speaking to chief game designer Akihiro Hino, who "believes it's possible to play and enjoy a noncombat character without fighting for the entirety of a lifeline in Fantasy", and the article ends by boldly claiming: "Fantasy already has more environments, enemies, vehicles, items, skills, classes, monsters, pets, and foods than any console RPG to date." Are you remotely, significantly, or excessively excited about this Xbox Live exclusive title?
W.I.P. First xbox native emulator
>> We received this news from Carcharius:
These are a couple of preliminary shots from my current project: screenshot1 - screenshot2 - screenshot3 This is NOT a port. It is (to my knowledge) the first emulator written specifically for the xbox. With that in mind - there are a few teething troubles, but a release of some kind shouldn't be too far away. If I need to tell you what it emulates then you probably wouldn't be interested in it anyway! ;) More info as things progress.
EA to make Xbox LIVE games?
>> From simoniker on games.slashdot.org:
Thanks to IGN Sports for its interview with Visual Concepts boss Greg Thomas regarding Sega and EA's entries in the Xbox sports game market. Thomas, whose Sega-owned company produces the ESPN Sports series, reveals of the Xbox versions: "Last year we had to be in [Microsoft's] closed network. This year, they're introducing something called LSP (Live Server Protocol) that enables us to run our own servers." Following Microsoft's cancellation of its 2004 XSN Sports line-up for Xbox, he muses on Electronic Arts' possible, long-delayed adoption of Xbox Live for sports titles, noting that LSP "...allows you to use your own servers. So if that was EA's problem, then they can definitely be on Xbox Live this year. But if they had a different problem, a billing issue or a revenue concern, then that hasn't changed." He ends by predicting of EA: "we're clearly expecting them to be on Xbox Live by the end of the year."
