wxHdd v1.2 and wxPirs v1.1
>> Gael360 released an update of wxHdd(info) (a tool to read the Xbox 360 HDD on PC) and wxPirs (to tool to open Generic Xbox 360 Container files).

What's new/fixed on wxHdd since v1.0 (translated from french):
* Experimental support for memory cards (v1.0.1)
* Fixed some bugs (v1.0.1)
* Handling fragmentation of disc (v1.2)
* Opening of several partitions (v1.2)
* Extracting directories (v1.2)
* Instant/Direct opening of files (v1.2)
* Note: wxHdd does not have a feature to 'add files' (write on HD/Image) yet.

Gael360 also released a new tool called wxPirs v1.1:
This tool will allow you to open files of the following types: PIRS, LIVE or CON, which are "generic container files" on the Xbox360.
More info about this format is available on free60.org.

These 3 formats are identical, the only difference are the first 4 characters of the file (PIRS/LIVE/CON), which is where their names come from, and what they are used for:
* PIRS: used to store themes or gamertags for example
* LIVE: used to store content downloaded from Xbox LIVE
* CON: these are a bit special, they are the only ones of this format that are create by the Xbox 360 itself. They are used to store saved games.

v1.1 comes with some bug fixes.

XLink One Development News: The Servers
>> Team XLink posted more about the developemnt of the new XLink One, which will replace XLink Kai(info):
* What are the orbital servers
The orbitals are the servers that you connect to when you sign into XLink. They in turn communicate with our central database server, which resides in a secure undisclosed location. The orbital servers also communicate with each other directly to keep everything synchronized.

* What's changing
The new orbital server is a complete rewrite of the existing system. The XLink Kai orbital software only runs on Windows, but the new one supports Windows, Linux, OSX, and FreeBSD servers so we'll have more flexibility in adding to the mesh. Hopefully this will result in better coverage outside of North America.

* What's new
Most of the changes to the orbitals are behind the scenes to support new features. The biggest visible improvement is that you'll automatically reconnect if your session drops, even if the server you were connected to goes down and you have to jump onto a different server. If you're in the middle of a game, you probably won't even notice that it happened. If the whole mesh goes down..well..you're still out of luck. The database that keeps track of everything is going through some improvements as well. All of the problems with strange contact list behavior are gone, and we're adding a bunch of new information to support new features (clan support anyone?)

* Where is it
It's not done yet. The framework for the server is done, and it runs just fine. The new engine can connect to it, and it can talk to the new database server and all of the other orbital servers. Features are being added daily, and I'll post updates as work progresses.

I've just had it confirmed that the decrypted M ROMs added to the v1.08 build were not publicly available dumps. It seems I was misinformed and therefore have released this fixed build which restores these ROMs to their previous CRCs.

Apologies for any confusion this mistake may have caused.

Xbox Dev Team about Xbox (360) Operating System
>> From the Xbox Development Team blog:
One of the first questions I get when someone hears I work on Xbox is "So, what operating system do you guys use? Windows 2000, right?" I am honestly not sure where the Win2K misperception comes from, but Xbox runs a custom operating system built from the ground up. While our operating system exports many of the same APIs found in Win32 (e.g. CreateThread or WaitForSingleObject), not everything is there. For instance, there is no use for CreateWindow on Xbox - all graphics are done through (our own flavor of) Direct3D.

There are a number of reasons both Xbox and 360 have their own OS. First, it gives Xbox a chance to own its own destiny in terms of architecture. When you have your own operating system, it's easy to go in and change things. Second comes performance. There isn't much of a hardware abstraction layer on Xbox - most stuff talks almost directly to hardware. This eliminates a lot of software overhead you might find on a PC. Third is security. With our own operating system, it also becomes a lot easier to design & implement our own security architecture. As the community is finding out, there is a lot of custom stuff.

The operating system is more than just the kernel. On Windows, you have critical components such as EXPLORER.EXE, shlwapi.dll, user32.dll, and others that are required for your system to function. On Xbox 360, we have similarly critical components. When you see a required system update from Xbox Live, we are mostly updating these critical components with fixes as well as new features.

That's a primer on our operating system. I wouldn't want to spill all my guts in one post 'cuz then I'd have nothing to talk about later on. Let us know if you want to know more about the OS in the comments...

Xplorer360 v0.9 Beta 3.1 and Help Out Team 360GameSaves.com
>> From 360gamesaves.com:
* Xplorer360(info) v0.9 Beta 3.1
So it seems when we compiled Xplorer360 Beta 3 we left out the search for XBOX1 HDD as a Physical Device! Download Link has been updated with that little problem fixed. :)

* AngerWound Needs an XBox 360 for Xplorer360 Development!
Well, as you can see from the title above. Neither of the developers of Xplorer360 currently own an Xbox 360 to your amazement! Everything was written based on dumps, and then ported over to use actual devices.
This is why we unleashed Xplorer360 so early, to get some real testing done! However, we'd like to be able to test things on our own hardware before putting the public at risk with possible bugs. If you enjoy the software, please help us out any way you can by donating your spare change via the link on the left of 360gamesaves.com.

DirecTV blade to bring HD TV and flicks to Xbox 360 Dashboard?
>> From joystiq.com:
During CES in January, Microsoft and DirecTV announced a "long-term agreement to expand the reach of digital content throughout the home and on the go." Part of that agreement involved extending "the DirecTV experience to the Xbox 360 system."

A scan of the March 2006 issue of Official Xbox Magazine reveals "that a DirecTV blade might be added to your Xbox 360 Dashboard to accompany the Xbox Live, Games, Media, and System blades. In that blade, you could download TV episodes in high definition, HD movies on demand, and standard-definition streaming DVR (i.e., TiVo) functions."

XLink One Development Blog
>> Team XLink is working on the new version of XLink Kai(info), named XLink One:
We're happy to announce the creation of the xlink one development blog which is where we'll be posting the latest news about the next release of XLink. Head over to http://dev.teamxlink.org and check it out. We've also set up a forum for related discussions.

Note: Requests for information or speculation related to a release date or timeframe will be met with scorn and disdain. We just don't know when it's going to be done.

* What's changing
The Xlink Kai engine is split into two branches: the Windows engine, and kaid which runs on Linux, OSX, FreeBSD, and WRT54G/GS routers. Features have not always been the same across the two branches, and sometimes one or the other lags behind.
The xlink one engine is an update of the kaid which has also been ported over to Windows. We've also added support for WinPcap on the Windows platform, which means that it works on Windows XP x64 Edition computer as long as you have the latest release of WinPcap installed.
There will no longer be two branches of the engine. When something is updated, it'll be released for all supported platforms at the same time. This also cuts our maintenance work in half meaning we'll have more time to concentrate on improving the system instead of writing code twice for two different engines.
That's not all that's changing in the engine - there are other new features that we'll talk about in the coming days that also affect the engine. But hopefully you get an idea of the direction we're going in.

* What's new
First, the new engine automatically detects and configures all of your network interfaces, even on non-Windows platforms. You can enable and disable each interface individually rather than just setting it to "Auto" or picking a single card.
If you have more than one connection to the Internet, you'll enjoy the ability to either pick one or the other connection, or use both at once.
You'll also be able to set up a "private" address that you can use if you're behind a firewall or NAT router and want to play with other people who are behind the same firewall, but who aren't on the same physical network segment as you. This is an expansion on the "Deep Resolution" feature that Kai has.

* When will it be released?
When it's done.

Takashi Sensui Replaces Maruyama at Xbox Japan
>> From 1up.com:
Yoshihiro Maruyama became familiar to gamers as the face of Xbox Japan, the counterpart to J Allard in North America; just as a recent re-organization moved J Allard and other key Xbox executives, Maruyama has now been moved to a "strategic position" in Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division (known as E&D).

Succeeding him will be Takashi Sensui, formerly director of the marketing department and game content group for Xbox Japan. He has worked closely with Maruyama for the Xbox 360 launch.
Sensui is expected to lead Xbox 360, which is off to a rocky start in Japan. But as more games become available on the system, Sensui expressed confidence that adoption of the system will grow. Indeed, that will be his primary responsibility.

Xbox 360 camera getting ready soon?
>> From the computerandvideogames.com:
Originally pencilled in as part of plans for the console's launch, the 360's camera was jettisoned to make room for a smoother debut. However, the appearance of the camera is now apparently drawing extremely close, as it's been debuted and demo-ed to leading developers in the last week. It might even be unveiled at this year's Game Developers Conference in March, although E3 may be more likely.

Speaking exclusively to CVG, development sources said they'd been impressed by the camera's credentials, although anyone expecting an EyeToy-style gameplay revolution may have to hold their fire for the moment. The demo was largely confined to Messenger-style chat functionality, allowing you to see as well as speak to your friends and relations across Xbox Live and of course indulge in live video chat.

Microsoft Releases New Xbox 360 Stats
>> From gamasutra.com:
The company has reiterated that it is on track to meet its shipment goal of 4.5-5.5 million units by June, and assembly will be further boosted by third manufacturing partner Celestica, joining manufacturers Flextronics and Wistron - though it made no official comment on recent reports that Infineon Technologies' memory chips were the particular constricting factor in the slow Xbox 360 roll-out to date.

A particularly interesting area reported by Microsoft were selected highlights from yesterday's January NPD report for North American hardware and software sales. These include news that Xbox 360's software attach rate is 3.7 games per console. This apparently remains the highest attach rate ever for the first three months of a console launch in the U.S., but is obviously positively affected by the supply problems of the console. In addition, Xbox 360's accessory attach rate is 2.9 accessory units sold per console with a wireless controllers attaching to almost every console.

Infineon to Blame for 360 Shortages?
>> From next-gen.biz:
Although a low chip yield has been named as a culprit in the past, it's the first time a specific supplier and component have been named.
Unnamed sources told the Mercury News that Infineon wasn't able to produce enough quality GDDR3 memory chips. Xbox 360 contract manufacturers Wistron and Flextronics reportedly had to sort through Infineon chip shipments, separating the good from the bad, which wasted both time and components.

Rejected chips couldn't keep up with the Xbox 360's 700 megahertz speed, and could noticeably affect the performance of the console if installed.
Currently, Samsung is the only supplier other than Infineon that supplies Microsoft with the GDDR3 memory, a fact that increases the plausibility of such a component issue.

(Japan) Xbox Lounge R.I.P.
>> From kotaku.com:
Yesterday was the last day for Microsoft's Japan showroom. While the lounge might now have gone out with a bang, it certainly did with class. A few days earlier, MSoft held a Rumble Roses event, but did not chose the game to shutter the space and went with Zoids instead. The last PR event clearly shows the company is moving in the right direction to win over Japanese consumers. Tomy's Zoids 360 title has a broad domestic appeal to young and old alike. The game is based on the longstanding, popular anime and toys by the same name. At last month's WHobby Fair in Osaka, gamers lined up, rarin' to have a crack at the title.

The Xbox360 saves are usually in /content/<profileID>/<titleID>/ of partition3 on your Xbox 360 HD. Xbox 360 gamesaves can be transfered to another Xbox 360 console and profile, but all 'LIVE achievements' will be disabled of course (achievements are linked to the LIVE profile). A dumbed down version of xplorer360 made specially for gamesaves manipulation will be released soon which should make it easier for beginners to find their gamesaves.

Also interesting - this tool will allow you to move over your old Xbox 1 gamesaves to your Xbox 360 (they will probably have to go somewhere in /partition3/Compatibility/Xbox1/ or /partition3/H2/), something that was impossible up to now.

But of course it'll also allow you to navigate the rest of the disc, so you can check out all the stuff located on the drive, like the music stored on your drive or what you downloaded from Xbox LIVE for example (demos, live arcade, themes, videos ...).

Note: Before people try to launch crazy ideas again: No this does not allow you to copy retail games (signed for XBOX360DVD media only) to the HD and play them. It's a tool that gives you access to the Xbox 360 HD and Memcard from a PC, it does not hack/bypass any security.

*UPDATE* BUG: One confirmed bug has been found and can be harmful if not known. Do not attempt to insert a file with the same name into a folder. If the filename already exists, delete it then insert your new one. Look for an updated/fixed build soon.

*UPDATE2* From 360gamesaves.com:

* added: my files, settings, xlink kai to startup window settings to match xboxmediacenter.xml
* added: display a/v sync in codecinfo during playback in dvdplayer + some new code to prepare for a new syncing system.
* added: IP Address button from the normal virtual keyboard to link to the IP address input dialog.
* added: display cpu usage for audio/video/player thread in dvdplayer.
* added: New LCD info labels thanks to Jeff McClain.
... rest of changelog (including many fixes): here.

XML Files Changes:
* Changes to Keymap.xml: Start wouldn't close OSD Audio Settings. Entry added.

Here's a nice screenshot I found on XBMC's SF site (not related to t3ch):

Keep in mind this is a CVS snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.

wxHdd v1.0 GUI Xbox 360 HD tool and wxTheme v1.1
>> Gael360 released a new GUI tool that will allows you to easily read/navigate the files/data on the Xbox 360 HD with a win32 PC. The application can't write files on the HD/Dump yet.
From gueux-forum.net (I translated it from french to english):
There are 2 ways to navigate (read) the Xbox360 HD:
* With the first button (Open File) to open a dump of the disc (faster and more secure)
* Or you can read directly from the disc (in that case the Xbox360 disc must be selected as default) by using the icon on the right (Open Disc)
Xbox-Scene

This is the first version, the program will evolve in the coming days, including support for PIRS files.

Some info about the content of the disc:
* Cache: as the name says ... used for caching
* Content: sub-dir 0000... contains the demos and other things you downloaded from LIVE. The other sub-dirs are user profiles.
* mindex: contains music files (both the original music files that come with the HD and those you recorded/transfered)
* H2: unknown (something with Halo2?)
* Compatibility: Xbox 1 gamesaves
* $systemupdate: Last weeks system (kernel/dashboard) update? (seems to contain the dashboard/system files (xex files) flashed on the Xbox360 TSOP during the update)
Gael360 also released an update of wxTheme, a tool used to extract the content of Xbox 360 theme files. From gueux-forum.net(1)/gueux-forum.net(2) (also translated to english):
The biggest difference is an improved handling of the PIRS format to allow extracting theme files located on the Xbox 360 HD.
You'll find the themes you downloaded from LIVE in this directory on your Xbox360 HD (atleast that's where they were on my console):
\Content\0000000000000000\FFFFE07D1\00030000
Xbox-Scene

You can also use this software to open PIRS files other than themes files, but with some bugs. I'm working on a more stable application dedicated to PIRS files.
