XBMC for Xbox SVN rev17820 build - T3CH
>> T3CH released a new SVN compile (rev17820) of XBMC for Xbox(info). This T3CH-compile is a complete snapshot of what is in SVN at the time the build was compiled, with just a few small additions.
Special Notes and Noteworthy/XML/Script changes: * Due to the slowed down development in the Xbox branch, I will no longer release new SVN builds as often as I did before. So I will still build (the best) new XBMC SVN builds for Xbox but just on an irregular basis. * Check out the full changelog since the January 25th 2009 Svn Rev17349 build here
Keep in mind this is a SVN snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.

Hackers target Xbox Live players with DDoS Attacks
>> From news.bbc.co.uk:
Xbox Live is being targeted by malicious hackers selling services that kick players off the network.
The booting services are proving popular with players who want a way to get revenge on those who beat them in an Xbox Live game.
The attackers are employing data flooding tools that have been used against websites for many years.
Microsoft is "investigating" the use of the tools and said those caught using them would be banned from Xbox Live.
"There's been a definite increase in the amount of people talking about and distributing these things over the last three to four weeks," said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at Facetime Communications.
Japanese Xbox 360 sales squeak past 900,000 units
>> From chartget.com:
Japan - Just four short months ago we posted an article that quoted Microsoft's goal of one million units for the land of the rising sun.
That goal came a little bit closer to reality last week, if only incrementally: 360 has now passed the nine hundred thousand barrier and is just one hundred thousand short of Microsoft's goal.
When the goal was first asserted back in October, the 360 was hovering near seven hundred thousand units. Since then the 360 has seen a two hundred thousand unit surge in four months.
Major Nelson Explains Issues with Dormant Live ID’s and Gamertags
>> From majornelson.com:
I want to take a moment to talk about Windows LIVE ID's and Gamertags. Recently, there have been a few stories about Gamertags becoming unrecoverable. I want to set the record straight, and let you know what is going on, and what we're doing about it.
What happens: In the rare case that you DO NOT sign in to Xbox.com or another website that uses Windows LIVE ID (like Hotmail) it is possible that your Windows LIVE ID expires (goes dormant.) An Xbox LIVE Gamertag is unrecoverable from the system only when the associated Windows Live ID has become dormant and the Gamertag has been deleted from all Xbox 360 consoles.
Members with dormant Windows Live IDs can continue to enjoy the benefits of their Xbox LIVE Gamertags on their Xbox 360 consoles, including earning Achievements; however, they will not be able to use their expired Windows Live IDs for activities such as account management on Xbox.com. It is important to note that an Xbox LIVE Gamertag is unrecoverable from the system only when the associated Windows Live ID has become dormant and the Gamertag has been deleted from all Xbox 360 consoles. What you can do to prevent having any problems: We recommend that people log into their Windows Live ID on Xbox.com or Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web at least once every four months. What we're doing: We are actively working on an update that will allow you to link your Gamertag to a new Windows Live ID if one becomes dormant.
If anyone should have an issue regarding their Xbox 360 or Xbox LIVE account should visit xbox.com/support so we can assist you.
Nielsen: Xbox 360 Number 1 with 12-17 men and 25-34 women
>> From gamedaily.com:
With all the talk of Nintendo expanding the video game audience, it should come as little surprise that new data from Nielsen Media Research suggests that Wii fares best with young boys and older women. The metered usage data, which covers last year's all-important fourth quarter (October - December), shows that Nintendo's console does a good job attracting boys age 6-11 and women age 25-34.
As for the other consoles, Nielsen found the PS3 to skew the oldest of the three platforms, possibly because of consumer brand loyalty and since Sony dominated the market with the PS One in 1994 and PS2 in 2000. Microsoft's Xbox 360, meanwhile, seemed to find the middle ground between Wii and PS3. Among males, the largest percentage of usage was found in the 12-17 age group, older than Wii, but younger than PS3. For females, the 25-34 age group had the highest percentage of usage.
Overall, however, while the Wii was the least used console on average, the Xbox 360 saw males using the Xbox 360 on nearly twice as many days per month as females (10.2 vs. 5.4 in December). On the PS3 and Wii, usage breakdown by gender was much more balanced.
Red Xbox 360 Mentioned Officially By Microsoft
>> From kotaku.com:
Whoops! In an official Halo Wars email sent to retailers and games press in New Zealand today, Microsoft make official mention of the rumoured red Xbox 360 Elite console.
The email was to announce a deal whereby anyone buying a 360 console in NZ would, for a limited time, receive a free copy of Halo Wars. Good deal! Except, there's a catch. You'll get the game if you buy an Arcade, Pro or Elite model, but "this Halo Wars offer does not apply to the Red Xbox 360 Elite console which is exclusive to EB games."
Microsoft Dates E3 '09 Media Briefing
>> From edge-online.com:
The company said in an e-mail Wednesday that the briefing will take place on Monday, June 1 at 10:30 a.m. PST in Los Angeles.
Companies may find this year's E3 to be a prime venue for major announcements, as organizers at the Entertainment Software Association have decided to bring back the large-scale, high-profile, high-attendance format in 2009, as opposed to the last two years of limited industry access.
MS investigating XBL account blunder
>> From eurogamer.net:
Microsoft has said the design flaw causing Xbox Live accounts to be wiped beyond recovery, and losing all earned Achievements, is being investigated.
The company issued a statement after a number of people moaned about the problem, which can be diagnosed by the '8015d080' error code when trying to resubscribe.
The problem comes from Windows Live ID email addresses, such as Hotmail accounts, expiring and being deleted. These then disappear along with the associated Gamertag.
Can Gamers Stop Worrying About Red Ring?
>> From edge-online.com:
When consumers send in consoles for RROD-related repairs these days, what kinds of fixes does Microsoft implement, and will gamers just end up sending back "fixed" Xbox 360s to be patched up a few months down the line? Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg hopes that will not be the case. "We've improved that [repair] process," he says, declining to get into specifics. "It's very quick, and they may upgrade your system with the latest technology. So that works really well.
"...What we do in general, the way that it works, is that they will fix it with the latest [hardware] improvements that we've applied [to current Xbox 360s]. Obviously we're continuously improving the technology inside the box, not to get too technical. So they'll apply that when they make the increments to your system."
However, there have been past reports of "refurbished" Xbox 360s failing multiple times after being sent in for repair. A report by Venture Beat's Dean Takahashi chronicled one Xbox fan who had gone through four refurbishes, while one can find any number of unsubstantiated claims by forum-goers who have likewise cycled through multiple Xbox 360s.
Greenberg claims such problems should soon be a thing of the past. "We're seeing great performance of the current systems, so we're really happy with the way they've been performing. ... From friends that have had [repairs] done as of late, I can tell you from our own internal staff that we're seeing very strong performance from a quality standpoint.
Rumor: MS survey mentions non-gaming achievements
>> From xbox.joystiq.com:
Loot Ninja dug up an alleged Microsoft sponsored Xbox 360 survey that brings up some interesting achievement topics. Specifically, questions that inquire about non-gaming achievements (like watching a certain amount of DVDs), having them unlock in-game content and even pitches the concept of having a virtual "in-game way to view your Achievements list." Similar to the proposed PlayStation 3 Trophy Room in Home.
Microsoft Admits Poor Economy Will Hurt Revenues
>> From edge-online.com:
Speaking to Reuters, Ballmer explained that "revenues in our industry, and in our company, will be affected by the economic conditions." Ballmer was, however, speaking about his company in general terms, and the extent in which the Xbox Division will be affected remains unknown.
It is thought that the cost-saving measures will reduce Microsoft's annual operating expense run rate by about $1.5 billion, and reduce fiscal year 2009 capital expenditures by $700 million.
Microsoft Seeking To Buy 3DV Systems For Use With Xbox
>> From paidcontent.org:
Microsoft is in discussions to purchase Israeli startup 3DV Systems for $35 million, Haaretz.com reported this morning. According to the report, Microsoft intends to use the company's technology, which enables gamers to control 3DV games using a camera and body gestures, to add to its Xbox offerings. The company's ZCam product can also be used for video-conferencing, though the utility of that for Microsoft is unclear.
Xbox 360 definitely leads PS3 in Europe, says Microsoft
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Chris Lewis, VP for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business in the EMEA region, has told GamesIndustry.biz that he's very clear on exactly who has the console lead between Sony and Microsoft in Europe - and he says that the third party numbers prove it.
According to data from GfK Chart-Track, says Lewis, the Xbox 360 is ahead by "approximately 1 million units" across Europe, the Middle East and Africa - a common grouping of territories, although Sony tends to talk about PAL regions instead, which also includes Australia and New Zealand.
But regardless of that, and the recent confusion surrounding the next-gen console leadership - after Nintendo - he's definite that Microsoft is beating Sony in the UK and mainland Europe.
Ellipsis XBMC Skin W.I.P.
>> From Team Blackbolt:
So it's been a while guys, but we've been busy! I've noticed on the forums that there's been a few users complaining that the Ellipsis skin is 'too little, too late', well screw you hippies, we don't give a shit, we're still making it. For the past few years, since finishing MC360 we've all gone our seperate ways, but I've also wanted to finish Ellipsis, just work, etc got in the way. Well finally after a couple of years of nothing much happening, we've gone from a few concepts of the skin to a fully functional skin which is past the mid-point of its development.
The shot below is of the skin actually running. Soon I'll change that shot to a video to give you guys a better idea of how ellipsis looks and works. We know most people are beyond XBMC now, but with the windows, mac and linux versions I think XBMC will live on for a long time to come and we wanted to have one last stab at it. Ellipsis will come in a single download, universal for all platforms. It's primary objective is to work in the home theatre enviroment, be simple to navigate and make it as quick as possible to get to the things you want. During our alpha stage we've had a lot of positive feedback and when we get to a good place very soon, we're going to go public so everyone can experience what I've had in my head for a couple of years and what has finally been brought into reality in the past couple of months.
