Aussie Company Releases Xbox Mod-Chip Designs
>> Posted on SLASHDOT..

An anonymous reader submits: "According to an article in the Australian Financial Review, An Australian computer chip designer will this weekend risk the wrath of Microsoft by making its sophisticated Xbox mod-chip designs freely available over the internet. This release is the second and most advanced design to date that has been released by this company, the earlier release of a much simpler design was covered by a previous article on slashdot. Go get'em while they're hot everyone. When you consider what has been happening to companies who irritate console makers, these files might not be around for long!" The AFR article requires subscription, but the AussieChip site has more information, including a link to the terms under which the designs may be downloaded -- looks like they're looking for some dedicated amateurs

Alex Kampl (Lik-Sang) regarding the High Court Action brought by Nintendo
>> We received this from Alex Kampl (Lik-Sang) concerning the recent Nintendo press release (news.com):
Comments regarding the High Court Action brought by Nintendo

I hope with the following Information I am able to give you a little insight into the recent happenings and about the misleading press release of Nintendo.

Before the Nintendo Press release has been distributed, I have delivered a Notice of Appeal to Nintendo, as well as to the High Court of Hong Kong. I am not exactly sure why Nintendo’s press department didn’t mention a word about it. The Judgment was not a real trial yet, it was a Summary Judgment with a single Judge. Usually such Summary Judgments are in case of bounced bank checks where no trial is needed and everything is straight forward.

With all due respect to the High Court of Hong Kong, but no Intellectual Property (IP) specialist was assigned to this case. Already at the first hearing the Judge mentioned that it’s a pity Hong Kong has no IP specialist anymore and that he finds the Copyright Law of Hong Kong very confusing. After some research, it looks like the Judge is a specialist for maritime laws. He made several comments during the hearings which seemed to observers like this was his first IP case ever.

The Summary Judgment itself was based on the Section 273 of the Hong Kong Copyright Ordinance about “circumventing a copy-protection”. No copy-protection exists in the Gameboy or Gameboy Advance game cartridges. The Judge didn’t hear a specialist or at least an independent 3rd party expert opinion - he took it for granted from the explanations by Nintendo that there is a copy-protection.

Furthermore, the Judge found that “by analogy with drugs, it[the setcion 273] is not aimed at the drug addict but at the drug trafficker”. I fail to understand his logic, as this would mean that the drug store selling the injection needles to drug addicts or maybe even the manufacturer of the container where the drug addict keeps the drug could be held liable?

After legal actions in the USA against Bung Enterprises in the late nineties (for selling and manufacturing videogame development and backup equipment) this was the second Court Judgment ever regarding products of this nature. Regarding information made available to me in the Court Room, the case against Bung and its US distributor Carl Industries Inc was brought to an end in their disfavor by Bung not complying with Court Orders and not paying ordered penalties. The actual judgment was written by Nintendo representatives, without the Judge properly going through the arguments. The legality or illegality of the products in question has therefore never been argued in a real trial anywhere in the world. A serious trial, with competent Judges, is now definitely needed to settle the question once and for all. This is why I have decided to appeal.

I am not happy about the direction where this is heading, neither are supporters and legitimate users of the tools. Again, I have to stress once more, that the very same hardware under attack is used by thousands of hobbyist users and even professional developers for legitimate purpose. Very embarrassing for Nintendo: even the large publisher, who made the original game used in Court for demonstrating purpose, bought hundreds and hundreds of Flash Cartridges from my company for beta testing. And so did numerous other top 10 publishers listed in the stock market.

The products I have sold are not circumventing any copy protections, same as a Floppy Disk Drive and a 3.5" Disk doesn't – in fact there is no copy-protection existing, as commonly known by the gaming industry.

I completely understand Nintendo’s fight against piracy, but I believe they are aiming at the wrong targets. With Digital Media and the Internet nowadays, publishers will have to change their strategy. They just can’t win the fight against the Progress without removing our primary rights: presumption of innocence and the right for backup. Nintendo doesn’t need to prove you are a pirate anymore, it is assumed you all are if you have the technical means to copy.

Nvidia source confirms ATI Xbox 2 design win
>> From TheRegister.co.uk:
Internet gaming site Spong.com has claimed its recent story ATI will provide the chipset and graphics technology for the Xbox 2 has been confirmed by an unnamed "senior source close to Nvidia".
According to Spong.com's source, "[Nvidia] didn't want to meet Microsoft's demands for the floating design of Xbox Next. It didn't make sense to partner on the project. At this moment in time, ATI is working with Microsoft."

Assuming the source knows what he or she is talking about, the comment suggests that Microsoft did offer the project to Nvidia. After the battle between the two companies over how much money Microsoft should pay Nvidia for the original Xbox graphics and chipset technology, it was widely supposed at the time of Spong.com's first ATI/Xbox 2 story that the software giant was simply pissed off with Nvidia.
But it's clear that sound business minds prevailed, and the longer-term benefits of working with an existing partner outweighed more momentary emotional considerations.
Nvidia, however, doesn't seem to have been willing to be flexible, and now its arch-rival has the deal - if the source's comments are accurate.

Lik-Sang case: Nintendo wins piracy suit in Hong Kong
>> From news.com:
Japanese game maker Nintendo says it has won one of its "most significant antipiracy judgments ever" against a Hong Kong company that sold devices capable of copying its games and putting them on the Net for limitless downloading.
In the recent ruling, a Hong Kong judge ordered Lik-Sang International to pay an interim amount of $641,000 (5 million Hong Kong dollars) in damages, Nintendo said Thursday.
A Lik-Sang representative could not immediately be reached for comment.
Kyoto-based Nintendo had sought $20 million in damages in its original complaint for lost revenue in 2001 and 2002, in a case that underscored the problem of rampant software piracy in China and adjacent Hong Kong.

After the Hong Kong ruling, Nintendo said it believes the cheap copying devices, which were manufactured in China, are no longer on the market, Daugherty said.

More about Xbox v1.3 changes
>> We received some information from people working on a xbox v1.3 solution for cheapmods.

LFRAME isn't really needed to parse LPC-data and that's why modchips with an own LPC-implementation (X2, chameleon, ...) managed to find a solution so fast/easily for xbox v1.3.
Cheapmods (SST chip) however use LFRAME and the LPC-implementation on these chips can't be modified. So it looks like the major reason Microsoft removed LFRAME was probably just to get rid of those cheap 'cheapmods'.

These people are now trying to enable cheapmods on v1.3 - they are not sure yet they will make it work, but they have a few good ideas on possible solutions.

Some sources also tell that a new MCPX will be released very soon in new xbox consoles, what will probably make the next xbox version alot harder to hack.

Xbox Successor In 2006?
>> From gamers.com:
Microsoft will release a new videogame console in Japan in 2006, CEO Steve Ballmer stated at a press conference in Redmond recently, reports the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. He mentioned that date as part of a general discussion of the Japanese games market, where Microsoft apparently remains committed to pushing the Xbox despite weak software support and consumer demand. Microsoft also plans to develop new, unspecified services to specifically appeal to the Japanese market.

A new Microsoft console in 2006 would likely arrive second or third in the next generation of game systems. Nintendo, which has stated that it will be the first to market, is reportedly aiming for 2005, while a 2005 or 2006 date has frequently arisen in discussions of Sony's next system.

In reference to the aging but still persistent rumors that Microsoft plans to invest in Sega, or buy the publisher entirely, Ballmer reiterated that the company has no such plans.

New Modchip: X-B.I.T (X-B INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY)
>> It looks like DMS , known from their DMS.3 flashable modchip for PS2, will soon release a no-solder (pogopin) modchip for Xbox.

From http://www.dms3.com/x-bit.htm:
DMS Technologies, have designed a compact and easy MOD solution for all XBX owners. The latest V1.3 is included.
Enter X-B.I.T, a combination of the Scene’s favourite concepts and much more. We’ve made an art out of turning our consumers’ feedback into functionality, we are sure that X-B.I.T is no exception.
The list of features is comprehensive, and bridges the gaps between several other MOD platforms.
We’re also very proud to be amongst the first teams to make a solution compatible with V1.3.
Envisage a completely solderless* solution compatible with V1.0, V1.1, V1.2 and V1.3, from all three territories, which can be enabled or disabled with a flick of a switch.
There’s also an optional mode to turn off the device, by holding "Power/Reset", which requires soldering only 1 wire.
Transfer of files to the flash is handled by a built in USB controller, connected to your PC via a Mini USB cable (Included with MOD). A useful LED has also been integrated in the design to show that the MOD is powered up. We have custom-authored a PC transfer program for sending flash files from the PC to the MOD. The USB controller I.C which is present on board the MOD is fully H.I.D compliant and does not require a PC driver, it will self configure in any M$ Operating system.
Our device is fully compatible with any of the Scene’s third party flash files.

Features:
- Completely solder free design (*), using spring loaded pins and a screw, providing fast, reliable and idiot proof installation.
- Compatible with V1.0, V1.1, V1.2 and V1.3.
- Built in programmer, for sending flash files from PC to MOD.
- Flashing operations controlled by onboard HID compliant USB controller.
- Optional connectors with pre-prepared wire, for those that wish to connect the MOD by soldering.
- Disable and Enable Switch, MOD status LED indicator and a Mini USB connector (for flash file transfer) on an external “control panel”.
- Compatible with all third party flash files. Multi-Bios support.
- Optional Eject switch reset, requires soldering only 1 wire.
- All MODS packaged in anti-static bags for prevention of ESD damage.
- PC flash file transfer software included.
- Mini USB cable included.
- Colour coordinated PCB’s.
- High quality branded components.

*Solderless solution uses spring-loaded pins connecting to LPC port.

Mega X-Key Software 2.1 Beta Upgrade
>> From http://www.megaxkey.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=171:
With the release of Mega X-Key 2.1 Beta, owners of unmodded XBoxes now have the ability to hack and re-sign their game saves right from their PC.

A few of our users had helped us test it before this release and have alrady come up with some really great hacked saves with EVERYTHING unlocked (thanks BrienJ and LOTW).

This is just the first public beta release and includes the re-signer (it's on the "Settings/Options" screen) and support for a few games, although virtually every game will be supported. The next release will also include an integrated game save hacker as well as support for "Mega Codes" (similar to GameShark codes) and "Mega Cheats".

"Mega Codes" will be used for unlocking specific items or all items so that you can customize your hacked saves to your liking (i.e. in a racing game, you might want all cars and tracks unlocked, but not necessarily want all the races already won for you). "Mega Cheats" will allow you to do things that would not normally be possible just by "playing" the game (i.e. cars with more horsepower than they could ever have just by "playing" the game to get more horsepower).

PJ64-X v0.70 XBOX-COMPLEX
>> Whats New/Fixed:
- Added 2 new xbes for Rice's 5.0.0 plugin which results is much higher compatability. (Thanks Rice!)
- Added LED color changes on savestate load/save (Thanks TJ_CRS!)
- Added 'R' Trigger to R Trigger on Xbox Controller
- Moved 'Z' Trigger to L Trigger on Xbox Controller
- Moved 'L' Trigger to L Thumb on Xbox Controller

Notes on the contest: (From the readme)
If your wondering about the donations and what will become of them. I will
be looking to do the following:
- Acquiring a Debug Kit to develop PJ64-X further and look into implementing a virtual memory handler. If your selling a Debug Kit, please contact Iriez.
- Donating of a portion of the funds to Rice for his excellent plugin work. This will further help with his plugins, which are open source, which will eventually create better plugins for me to port into PJ64-X. My understanding is he currently uses a low end graphics card for his development work. So im sure he will appreciate the donation i am giving him, and hopefully will be able to purchase a better one, or maybe an Xbox of his own (1964 on Xbox
would own!).
- Donating a portion of the funds to other authors that made this happen.
I would also like to note that rice's 5.0.0 plugin which was implemented is more solid, but has a few known bugs that were not in 4, such as transparency issues (menu txt box in mario 64) and invisible menu's and game stats (fzero-x and some others) ...In order to fix the invisible menu's do a quick save state (back and black) and load it...and it fixes the problem.

The N64 Contest is now officially over as all the goals/requirements are met. Its looking like he is going to attempt a virtual memory handler for PJ64-X over the next couple weeks, so there probably wont be anymore releases unless rice releases a new source (5.1.0 that should be out soon ! =). Look forward to more PJ64-X releases in the future!

xbedump with keys for 007-hack
>> I recompiled the xbedump of Xbox-Linux (sourceforge.net CVS) with the key released in this XBH thread. This should allow you to boot any xbe with the 007:AUF gamesave trick.

dankydoo also ported it to Windows (posted on http://www.console-gods.com): here
usage:
xbe anyfile.xbe -sign
mv out.xbe DEFAULT.xbe

verification:
xbe DEFAULT.xbe -vh -st
Let us know on the forums if you tried this trick: forums.xbox-scene.com

For those that don't have the files of the original 007-trick, you can find the original uu-coded file here[xbox-linux.sourceforge.net].
Or you can get the decoded version with just the files you need here. (put new signed DEFAULT.xbe in dir \UDATA\4541000d\000000000000\ , put it on your memorycard via PC (you can do that easily with the Mega-X-Key), copy it from your memorycard to your xbox HD and try to load the saved game in 'James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire' (you need the original copy of this game ofcourse)).
Also note that all files needed by the xbe you are trying to boot must also be on the memorycard.
What the 007hack actually does is patching the public key of the xbox in memory. So with the 007trick you can boot up evo-x and from there you can theoretically boot all xbe's re-signed with the 007hack key.
Ofcourse you don't have the modchip bios features like: no reset on eject , HDD swap , no-patch hack , ... - and you always have to go through the 007 save game loading when restarting.
It can be very usefull for those who want to flash TSOP though: you still have to to solder 2 jumpers, but you can now flash it with evo-x instead of xbox-linux live with raincoat.

WARNING: This is NOT the key MS uses to sign software - you can only use this to boot xbe's using the saved game exploit in the game '007: Agent Under Fire'. Do NOT replace your MS dashboard with a 007hack-signed xbe!

There will be a small delay on 2.2 Pro as all wholesale orders for the 2.1 Pro have actually been completed over the weekend - of course we were hoping they wouldn't be ready but didn't find out until today.

We will be making 2.2 immediatley after the 2.1 stocks have been depleted so expect them to be with your suppliers very fast.

We will of course try to add some 2.2 Pro's to the wholesale orders just so they can supply at least some v1.3 customers

Of course this ONLY effects new v1.3 Customers - these machines are still in very small supply so it's nothing to be worried about - chances are 90% of you have the v1.1 or v1.2 anyway - so the X2.1 will be just right for you - the X2.2 has no other features except v1.3 compatibility.

Note that the X-ecuter2.1 Lite/Pro will be exactly the same as the X-ecuter2.2 Lite/Pro , just without Xbox v1.3 support.
A user the XBH forums named free-x has posted a method of running other XBE's using the 007 exploit. You can find this exclusive info here. In the example text EVOX is being used ;) , so will we see mods soon enough that do not require opening xboxes? Only time can tell if this works or not, post your opinions on the forum topic linked below.

pixit v0.5
>> pixit is a PC utility to manipulate Xbox Archive files (XIP)
As seen above, you have three options at your disposal. Create, Display and Extract.

Create: Create a new XIP archive file. By default, it'll create a file
called default.xip and use the file default.csv to build it.

Display: Display information about an XIP archive file. By default, it'll try to display the content of default.xip.

Extract: Extract files from an XIP file. By default it'll use the file default.xip and dump all files into a directory called default.xip.d.

CHIHIROX (Ver 0.1) Release
>> News TRANSLATED to English: CHIHIROX (Ver 0.1) Release

1. Applicable to both Japanese and English (imcomplete)
2. Calibrating the memory leak in CHIHIROX and SNES
(in order to increase the memory space, we are creating and release background visual data. In order to do this at high speed, we are copying the data onto the harddisc.)
3. Button settings on the controller pad. (awaiting) If we do not press a particular button for more than three seconds, nothing is set on that button.
4. Calibrating the background music sled execution. Due to an error we have to go back to 1speed.
5. Applicable to SMS/GG
6. There is a bug in the analog stick. The default position sometimes changes. (Returns to default position after turning 360 degrees).

Thanks to negitron from EFNET / #XBOX-SCENE for the translation.

XECUTER2 BIOS Build 4977
>> Team Xecuter just released a new build of their X2 bios.

What's new/fixed:
* Permanent No Reset On Eject - Finally got around to adding this - HATED to have it reset in xbox media player :-)

There's also some news about the X-ecuter2.2 modchip (compatible with Xbox v1.3) and about the X-ecuter3 project:
Xecuter2.2 News
As reported recently there is a new XBOX which we have tagged "v1.3". Worringly all mods / bios's did not work at all. Of course initial assumptions were new RC4, new MCPX etc etc - however after much testing and desoldering of the flash rom we found that a hacked bios could indeed work but LPC was messed up in some way.
So we started to get a little worried that the LPC days are over. After initial tests by Team Xodus they informed us that the LFRAME (pin 3) signal was disabled and could we take these tests further (about time we actually co-operated on something heh)
So after confirming that LFRAME was indeed disabled (in fact completely disconnected for the MCPX) this meant that all LPC mods especially the CHEAPMOD were now dead.
However, our head coder was already experimenting with a new advanced LPC host system for Xecuter 3, and the exciting thing about this was that it no longer used the LFRAME signal!
After testing our prototype of Xecuter3 on the v1.3 we found it worked as normal - so we have simply implemented the extra X3 commands into the X2 chipset so you can all use these mods right now (as we dont expect X3 to be "gold" for at leat another couple of months. The natural label for this mod was Xecuter 2.2 I suppose its yet another FU to the bashers who say we don't actually do anything.....yes of course we don't ;)

Xecuter3 News
It's coming soon don't worry :)
I can announce it's extra functions will be fully supported by Avalaunch, MXM, XBMP & any other dashboard provider that wants to give everyone freedom of choice.
