AMD and ATI to ask Shareholders for Merger Approval Monday?
>> Some news from rumor-site theinquirer.net (so take it with a grain of salt):
[QUOTE]
According to an extraordinarily reliable source, AMD and ATI will on Monday pitch their shareholders with the proposition that the two companies merge.

It's an interesting idea - AMD doesn't quite have the shekels in the bank to buy ATI outright. The deal, subject to shareholder approval, may still founder.

Microsoft confirms existence of Zune: Music now, Video and Gaming Later
>> From arstechnica.com/engadget:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft has confirmed the existence of the Zune portable music player and says that it will be out by the end of the year. In an interview published in this week's Billboard Magazine, Microsoft GM of Marketing for MSN Entertainment Business Chris Stephenson says that Zune is "a family of hardware and software products" targeting various digital entertainment services.

The Zune has been rumored to be capable of playing digital music, video, gaming, and downloading music over an 802.11b/g connection. Right now, however, Microsoft says the primary focus for the device will be on music. Zune will indeed have the rumored WiFi capability as well as an internal hard drive. Stephenson declined to divulge the full tech specs for the device, saying that those have yet to be decided.

Microsoft hopes to use the built-in WiFi to foster a community around the Zune, enabling users to see one another's playlists, send track recommendations wirelessly, and even share music with one another. In addition, users will be able to send and receive content between the Zune and other Microsoft devices such as the Xbox 360, Media Center PC and mobile devices running the Windows Mobile OS.

Billboard confirms that "additional Zune-branded devices will follow, including a portable video player and, potentially, a portable game device," as well as an initial device offering WiFi and drive-based storage.

Microsoft CFO: 13-15 Million Xbox 360s By June 2007
>> From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Liddell, the company's CFO, commented during the earnings call that the company is aiming for 13 million to 15 million Xbox 360 consoles sold by the end of the next financial year, which is June 20th, 2007 under Microsoft's current financial reporting schedule - a figure backed up by subsequent financial filings.

In a separate filing, the company revealed: "This brings our installed base through June to 5 million consoles with 3.3 million in North America, 1.3 million in Europe and 400,000 in the rest of the world."

It was also cited by the Microsoft Home & Entertainment team's Entertainment & Devices division: "By holiday 2006, we believe we will have shipped more than 10 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide and have an expected catalog of 160 high-definition games."

Also mentioned was confirmation of the HD-DVD add-on shipping later this year for the console: "Accessory momentum is expected to continue at a record setting pace given forthcoming wireless accessories including the new Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel and Xbox 360 Wireless Headset, not to mention the Xbox 360 HD DVD player coming this holiday."

Wolf3D OpenXDK Port Released
>> d0wnlab/th0mas released a port of Wolfenstein 3D for Xbox(1) using the legal/opensource OpenXDK(info):
[QUOTE]
After some newfound interested in the OpenXDK, a workaround was found for input handling so input now works 100% (!!), so I guess it's time to release some ports :). I bring you a completely legal port of Wolf3D, the classic id FPS. It comes all ready to play with the shareware data files - unfortunately I don't think the registered datafiles or expansion packs will work at this time. If there is interest in getting this to work let me know and I'll see what I can do. Anyways, binary release - just unpack and copy to your xbox, data directory intact. Source release - have fun, requires OpenXDK from CVS or better.

Bugs:
* Savegames get reported as corrupted.. but they load fine.
* Sound doesn't work
* Strafing over an item does not pick it up

Controls:
* triggers to fire
* A to open doors
* X to strafe, B to run
* Start/Back are Enter/Escape

If anyone really can't handle that keymapping let me know and I can change it.

Joystiq interviews Greg Canessa of XBLA
>> From joystiq.com:
[QUOTE]
Today, I sat down with Greg Canessa, the group manager for Xbox Live Arcade, and we spoke about the service as a whole and what was in store for this successful extension of the Xbox 360. We touched on everything from what effect Nintendo's Virtual Console might have to the fact that Texas Hold 'Em poker will not be free -- despite previous statements that it would.

* We hear that it takes quite a while for the approval process a game must go through in order to make it onto Xbox Live Arcade. Is this true and if so, how will it affect Microsoft's ability to come through on the promise of at least one new XBLA game every Wednesday?
* The process does take a while. Some developers and publishers just underestimate the amount of time it takes in the approval process. As far as making sure games come out every Wednesday, that won't be a problem. We have over 80 titles that are currently in development and have been cuing up releases in secret. What we're doing with our new XBLA Wednesday program is merely bringing structure to the whole process.

* What happened with Street Fighter II? Why the delay?
* Capcom just needed more time. Simple as that. They wanted to make sure they got it right because they knew the expectations were going to be very high for that game. There were a lot of multiplayer aspects that needed to be perfected so there wouldn't be any unnecessary lag and things like that. We wanted that game to be as smooth as possible.

Microsoft Beats Estimates, Sees Lower Profits On X360 Hardware Costs
>> From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Tech giant Microsoft has announced its fourth-quarter financial results for the period ending June 20, 2006, beating estimates and showing a 16 percent increase in revenue to $11.80 billion, but a fall in profit from $3.7 billion to $2.83 billion compared to the previous year, partly due to Xbox 360 hardware costs.

However, Microsoft noted that it shipped 1.8 million Xbox 360 video game console units in the quarter, according to a slide presentation on its website, and that its Xbox Live service numbers 3 million users as of the end of its fiscal quarter. Looking ahead, the company anticipates revenue for its entertainment and devices division to climb by 31-46 percent in fiscal 2007, and by 53-60 percent in the first quarter.

As for specifics on the Xbox 360 and Xbox's financials, the company's Home and Entertainment division, which includes the Microsoft Xbox video game console system, PC games, the Home Products Division, and TV platform products for the interactive television industry, saw revenues of $1.138 billion, a significant increase from the $587 million reported for the same period in 2005.
However, the division also posted a loss of $414 million, a jump from the previous year's loss of $201 million, a clear indication that the costs associated with Xbox 360 hardware manufacturing are eating into Microsoft's bottom line.

Xbox8164Adapter High-Res Sample Pictures and LG GDR-8164 Firmware BugFix
>> The guys behind the Xbox8146 Adapter informed us the firmware they released yesterday for the LG GDR-8164 PC drive contained a bug in the detection of the normal/xbox1/xbox360 disc. Because of this the Xbox 360 disc extraction didn't work correctly. They are now working on fixing this bug, it should be availble very soon on their website.

The 'Xbox8146 Adapter' adds a connector to the "cheap & reads-everything" LG-8164 PC DVD-drive so you can use it as full replacement drive for the Xbox(1). With this modified firmware you can even read/load original Xbox1 discs on your modded Xbox (what a normal PC DVD-drive normally can't) and you can also extract original Xbox360 discs with it when connected to a PC (can't be used to get SS (yet) though). More details
Here are some high resolution pictures of the device we took of the sample we got from the Xbox8164Adapter Team.

NME-360: Hitachi pot to 2.6KOhms, 2nd Batch MachineMade, SS-Merger v1.7
>> Team Underdog posted news about their NME-360 DVD patchmod chip:
[QUOTE]
Now the first week after the release of our Modchip has passed and we want to thank all of our customers for their overwhelming support and feedback.

One more very important fact we found out is that for the Hitachi DJ drives you can even lower the value of the trimpot to 2.6KOhms for perfect media recognition and without harming the laser.

We see a few irrelevant people complaining about the manufacturing of our chips. Just let us tell you that most of the people don't care whats under the rubber because the final result is even better than expected. In order to get the chips out to the public we needed to choose that kind of manufacturing for the first batch. The forthcoming batches will be machinemade which will of course make us able to deliver much better quantites and the few complainers will be satisfied, too. ;-)

People who still have problems patching the SS to the correct adress will receive some help from the upcoming SS-Merger v1.7.

Xbox8164Adapter Firmware Released: Read Originals
>> The guys behind the Xbox8146 Adapter informed us they now released a modified firmware for the LG GDR-8164 PC drive that will allow the drive to read original Xbox discs.
This 'Xbox8146 Adapter' adds a connector to the LG-8164 PC DVD-drive (requires some easy soldering: see installation diagrams), so you can connect the special Xbox 'yellow' power/eject DVD-cable to the drive. This allows you to use this cheap (~15-25usd) PC drive, that easily reads any cd/dvd media, as a full replacement drive for your Xbox1. While you could boot any Xbox code from CD-R(W) and DVD+-R(W) (on a modded Xbox1 of course) with this drive it couldn't read/load original Xbox discs.
That's why they now released a modified firmware for this LG GDR-8164 drive that will allow you to boot original Xbox discs on your modded Xbox and it'll even be able to read the content of original Xbox 360 discs (it can't be used to extract SS (yet) though):
[QUOTE]
Last time we introduced our product, the 8164 adapter. Because it has been more and more difficult to find replacement drives for your broken or bad reading drive, we developed a adapter to offer a clean and easy solution for everyone.
The adapter makes a LG-8164 PC drive function in a Xbox(1).

The only disadvantage of this product was: it couldn't read originals. Thanks to MrPresident this problem is now solved with the new xbox8164flasher.rar firmware.
You can even use this firmware to extract Xbox 360 games.
After installation it will play all media CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R/DVD+R and originals!
Flashing the drive is very easy, we even included a windows GUI flasher. Installation instructions are in the readme.txt

We continue coding to offer complete Xbox1 drive emulation for non-modded Xbox's and SS extraction for Xbox 360 games.

Prey Platform Decision 2006: PC or Xbox360
>> From gamespot.com:
[QUOTE]
In the past, the PC versus console debate has boiled down to a few points that almost always end up favoring the PC, especially when it comes to first-person shooters. The mouse-and-keyboard standard simply offers more refined control than a gamepad. And typically, the graphics gap between the console and PC versions used to be awfully substantial. At this point in time, though, the Xbox 360 is doing a pretty good job at keeping up with the pack, and now, more than ever, the line between platforms is quite blurry.

Here, we'll take 2K Games' Prey and break down the differences between the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game in an effort to help you decide which version is for you. Since the gameplay is pretty much identical in the two versions, the little differences here and there (and the quality of your PC components or your desire to upgrade, if needed) are going to be the deciding factor. Let's start with a quick summary of the good and the bad about each version.

Prey for the Xbox 360
+ Solid performance
+ Utilizes the platform's addictive achievements system
+ Contains Dolby Digital 5.1 sound
- Retails for $10 more than the PC version
- Can't use any user-generated content

Prey for the PC
+ Cheaper retail price
+ Looks better than the Xbox 360 version on higher-end PCs
+ Has more potential for additional content via user mods and maps
- No native support for widescreen resolutions
- Multiplayer designed to only officially support eight players

The PC version is the better bet if you've got a high-end machine, but the Xbox 360 version offers a guaranteed level of performance that's a better choice for people unwilling to upgrade their PC, especially if you already have a home theater system and an HDTV.

Analyze This: Does Microsoft Need Japan?
>> From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
In the latest 'Analyze This' series of exclusive Gamasutra features, we ask three of the industry's top analysts whether the Xbox 360's success in Japan is crucial to Microsoft, and what can be done to improve market share in that territory.

As part of his response, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter comments:
"I don't think that this is [Microsoft's] fault. They have tried as hard as they can to succeed, but cultural bias has precluded success. I don't think that they will be able to fix things without an alliance with a Japanese company. [In] hindsight, it may have been smart to partner with Toshiba to put an HD-DVD drive in every 360, but that would have been exceedingly expensive, especially given Microsoft's low-price strategy."

Also having been asked whether Japanese-developed games are crucial to worldwide success, he suggests:
"I don't think that American gamers are enamored [with] Japanese product because it comes from Japan; rather, I think Americans like good games, regardless of the country of origin. Microsoft doesn't need Japanese development to succeed in the U.S.; it needs good games, period.
Courting Japanese developers is likely to increase the number of good games, but the same can be accomplished by courting U.S. and European developers."

Adapter to use a Sega Saturn controller with the Xbox 360
>> X-Scene forum head-moderator twistedsymphony sent us some news about an adapter he built that allows you to use a Sega Saturn controller with the Xbox 360:
[QUOTE]
The v1 Prototype of the Sat-2-360 Controller Adapter is now finished after two and a half months.
Xbox-Scene

The intent of the adapter was to be able to use a completely unmodified Sega Saturn controller to play Xbox 360 Games. More specifically I wanted a good 2D gamepad to play upcoming Xbox Live Arcade titles such as Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Thankfully I was able to complete my adapter before either of the game have been release... so I'll be ready :-) The adapter accomplishes everything I set out to do and then some. Seeing as I used a Wireless Xbox 360 controller the whole adapter is wireless and runs on batteries. Here's a video of the adapter in action:

Analyst: PS3 To Slow Industry Growth, Nintendo and Microsoft Could Capitalize
>> From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
A new report from analyst group DFC Intelligence's David Cole has once again questioned Ken Kutaragi's positioning of the PlayStation 3 in the coming console generation, and has also indicated that the console's high price could slow the growth of the video game industry. However, the firm also noted that this could make for an exceptional opportunity for competitors Microsoft and Nintendo with each company's competing consoles.

"DFC Intelligence has always said that as the dominant market leader, SCE was largely in control of its own fate. Microsoft and Nintendo had to hope Sony fumbled or significantly changed its strategy so that they could get an opportunity to capture some of that PS2 audience. Now it is clear Sony is handing its competitors a golden opportunity.
As we have mentioned in past briefs, the big concern with Sony is not only the PlayStation 3 launch price, but the signs that Sony has gotten itself into a business model that is not conducive to the mass market video game audience. There has been a lot of talk about positioning the PS3 as not just a video game system, or even entertainment system, but instead as a computer system.

So while Sony struggles with positioning issues Microsoft and Nintendo are free to try and build a solid base of actual video game players. The good news is that for both companies, under any scenario, DFC forecasts that the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii will have a larger installed base than their respective predecessors. However, we think the company with the biggest opportunity is Nintendo. With a market leading price and a compelling mass market message the Wii has the opportunity to be the market share leader in all major regions.

The Xbox 360 also has an opportunity to be the overall market share leader, but we think the system will generally be stronger in North America than in Europe or Japan. In fact, even under the best case scenario for the Xbox 360 we predict the system will finish third in Japan while being the number one system worldwide.

Other potential issues that concern us with the Xbox 360 have been Microsoft's struggles to break out beyond the hard-core gamer and the significant losses that the company has been forced to take to build market share. Microsoft could become bogged down in efforts to reach out to the mass market via casual games, portable games and other areas that could distract from the overall Xbox 360 business.

Unreleased Penny Arcade Xbox 2 Rumors Strip
>> From Ozymandias' Blog (alias Andre Vrignaud, Microsoft's Director of Technical Strategy for Xbox Live):
[QUOTE]
Thought you guys might get a kick out of this strip the Penny Arcade guys did for us as a favor a few years back. At the time, we had a small team working on "Xenon", or what would eventually become the Xbox 360. It was a great time - there were tons of random rumors swirling around the web, and I can't tell you how much fun it was to read everyone's theories on what we were up to.

Anyway, after Xenon was greenlit an Xbox-wide meeting was planned where Robbie would detail our plans and get all the internal teams focused on the the project. This was to be the internal "big bang" meeting, and we thought it would be pretty cool to see if Penny Arcade might be willing to do a strip that we could distribute with the meeting announcement. I'm pleased to say that they agreed to do us this favor, and the strip you see here was the result. The only "guidance" we gave was that we were looking for a strip about Xbox 2 rumors - that's it. As such, everything you see and read is classic Penny Arcade. Even though it's not an official part of their canon, I have to say I love how it turned out. The writing is dead-on (as usual), and Gabe's color work is some of the best he's ever done.

MC360 XBMC Skin Work Ongoing
>> From Team Blackbolt:
[QUOTE]
I thought everyone deserved an update as you have all been so kind and supportive of our little project here. Work on MC360 is progressing well, I myself have been away for a few days but upon returning I got a real sense of the teamwork and work load that is put out by the coders working on the skin. There where many new features and additions that I had not seen before so well done guys from me personally. With regards to a release to go along with the T3CH release for the 16th, we don't feel that there is enough of a reason to release the skin yet with the changes made. We have 2 MAJOR elements going on at the moment within the skin, one is the new XBMC Live section which is shaping up nicely, the other is one big element that many people have been waiting for. Lossol93 is heading the true HD font conversion, he is also looking into our true wide-screen support. The skin current supports stretched wide-screen, which was purpose built in, but we and everyone want a true wide-screen mode for those 70% of XBMC users that use it. The only reason that it hasn't been implemented so far is the skin is developed in PAL 4:3. that's just the way it goes, and until we have the layout and design for the 4:3 mode done we won't be finishing the true 16:9. But, as we grow closer to the 1.0 release the skin is shaping up and nearing its W/S conversion so there is hope yet for you guys.

Also the Superman Returns theme is suffering from my personal lack of time. I am still designing it so its not vapour ware and I do realise a lot of you guys don't really care about it, but its specifically for those that do and enjoy superman. So look forward to that soon. More themes will come soon and a better feature packed MC360 will be out soon too, the current version of MC360, the 10th July 0.98656 version works fine with the latest T3CH so everyone should be fine. We will update everyone when the next release is coming out.

Xbox Live Friends list back on MSN Windows Live Messenger
>> From majornelson.com:
[QUOTE]
After a 14-month hiatus, it's back! You can now check your Xbox Live friends list from MSN Windows Live Messenger*. Don't have Messenger yet? Download it here. If you already have messenger, click on the Xbox tab and you'll see your friends list. Plus, you can even click a friend to go to their profile page. Nope...no word on when/if we'll combine the Messenger and Xbox Live friends lists, but at least we've got this back.

*Note this is for US passport accounts only. Other regions may have this function, but it is purely up to the regional Windows Live Messenger teams if they want an Xbox tab...the Xbox team does not make this decision.

Major Nelson's podcast on HD DVD vs. Blu-ray
>> From hdbeat.com:
[QUOTE]
For the second time this year, Xbox Live's Larry Hyrb a.k.a. Major Nelson has a high definition expert, actually two, appear on his podcast to extol the virtues of HD DVD. The two experts appearing this week include Amir M., who many of you are already familiar with due to his frequent posts on AVSForum, and Kevin Collins, both work on Microsoft's efforts promoting iHD, VC-1 and HD DVD.

If you're familiar with Microsoft's stated reasoning for supporting HD DVD instead of remaining neutral or supporting Blu-ray there won't be a lot of new info here, but probably enough to make a listen worthwhile. Be warned that if you're a Blu-ray fanboy this isn't exactly the equal-time special, if you're expecting the Blu-ray side of things to be presented you'll need to look elsewhere. However being biased towards the HD DVD side (not mentioning reported issues with HD DVD players and promoting recent firmware upgrades as a benefit and not a side effect of rushing to launch for example) doesn't mean they aren't telling the truth. Their main points are clear, 30GB dual-layer HD DVD over 25GB single-layer Blu-ray, VC-1 HD DVD releases over MPEG-2 Blu-ray releases and already available iHD-enhanced titles over potentially limited BD-J support in current players.
Kevin is especially proud of HD DVD's interactive features and mandatory player requirement of persistent storage, which he believes will result in more studios supporting added functionality such as bookmarking, content downloads etc. on HD DVD as opposed to Blu-ray. They also touch on the subjects of compromise and studio support, they don't expect a compromise, or for either format to go away in the next few years, and that more movie studios will support HD DVD as time goes on. They also think that despite being outnumbered by number of studios, HD DVD will still have many quality titles available from the studios already supporting the format. Amir minimized the differences in transfer rate in the specifications and their potential effect on gaming, and the Xbox 360 vs. Playstation 3 debate.

Virtual Xbox CD Ripper Public Source Code
>> BlueCELL released the sourcecode for Virtual Xbox CD Ripper(info):
[QUOTE]
For those that don't know. VXCR is a program that allows you to transfer songs from your PC to your Xbox without having to burn an Audio CD and then hoping that the Xbox would read the CD.

The real reason behind me officially releasing the code is because I checked one of my old email addresses from a while ago and realized that a few people requested the code. Sorry to those for not replying.

This is the latest code from me (BlueCELL). I believe this is newer than the last version released on Xbins. There are only a few minor changes. Nothing new in the interface/features.
This code is written in VB6 (yes, I know from the stone ages). I did start to rewrite the program in VB.NET 2005 but never had the time to finish it. The only thing that was near complete was the interface. If anyone is interested in working with me or by themselves to release a new version feel free to. The biggest problem with porting this into a .NET language would the the file conversion (whatever -] WMA).
The guys at www.un4seen.com have libraries for encoding to WMA format.
This library is free to use for non-commercial applications (the last time
I checked at least) and works with any dot NET language.

This also includes all the graphics and documents etc that have been made to date.

NME-360 Chip: High-Res Sample Pictures
>> We received a sample of Team Underdog's NME-360, a chip that will allow to patch the DVD firmware of the Xbox 360 drive 'on-the-fly' and only when needed (so not for original x360 discs). There's a version for Toshiba-Samsung drives (4 wires) and one for Hitachi-LG (FW v46 and v47 only afaik) drives (11 wires).
The samples I received came with an elastic rubber cover in red with a 'S' handwritten on it (Samsung) or in black with 'H' handwritten on it (Hitachi). This rubber cover is probably so you can safely place the chip on the DVD motherboard without causing any short circuit.
I of course removed the rubber cover so you can see what's behind it. Build quality is not really the best I've seen, but the 1-layer PCB design is fairly simple so I don't think this will cause too many problems. Anyway we'll go deeper into details of this chip and how it works in an upcoming review.

In meantime here are some sharp high-res pictures of the samples we got:
