Xbox Gateway : Netplay without usign VPN
>> Well, it's been a little while since the XBox was released and people are already playing online! The folks at xboxgw.com have written a program to create an ethernet bridge between xbox's over the net, fooling the xbox's into thinking they're on a LAN. 1v1 seems to create no major lag and reports have come in like this one that claim up to four xbox's work fine.
This is a much better solution then the VPN-server some people used before.

Sega’s losses in line with expectations
>> Sega Corporation has reported $169 million in losses for the first half of its current fiscal year. Increases in revenue generated by its core video game business were offset by the tumbling value of its investments. Following several consecutive years of losses, the company had hoped to turn a profit for the current fiscal year, but now it expects a loss of $122 million for the full year ending March 2002. Still, the financial situation at Sega is considerably rosier than it was at this time a year ago--the company reported $424 million in losses for the previous fiscal year. Sega plans to continue its focus on developing games for the three major hardware manufacturers and on such ventures as driving simulators, PDA and wireless games, and on-demand Internet products. The company is also considering the acquisition of additional development studios in order to expand its game-development reach further.

Xbox Operating Frequency
>> It appears the operating frequency of the nVidia GPU has been reduced from 250MHz to 233MHz. The GPU was originally announced at 300MHz. If I am not mistaken, nVidia's site has only been updated to the 233MHz speed in the last few days.

CD ripping times have decreased and the HDD works a lot faster now that it's running at ATA100. More info on that later, too. Anyway, that's what's goin' on, and expect a Part 2 soon."

Xbox Success? Not So Fast
>> Forbes.com wrote a very interesting article.
"Microsoft will sell the $299 Xbox consoles at a loss that's been estimated to be as high as $100 a unit. It hopes to make it all back on what it hopes will be a huge library of games that sell for about $50 each."
"The notion that they won't make money for two or three years doesn't scare them at all. If they see a long-term strategic benefit, they'll ride that horse as long as it takes."
"It's no accident that the word "Microsoft" doesn't appear in Xbox ads."
"Remember the Microsoft curse. It usually takes three versions of a Microsoft product before the company gets it right."

FSB speed ?
>> "Although Intel informally told us several months ago that the Xbox CPU's FSB would be 133MHz, this would mean that the memory would run asynchronously in a fractional harmonic (200/133). Since this would be inefficient and yield only mixed results, the BGA Mobile Celeron might only have a 100MHz FSB and performance would not be impacted much (yielding a more favorable 2/1 ratio). Ah, but the 733MHz CPU speed would not be possible because the multiplier would not work, so the FSB must be 133MHz like we originally concluded."

Game industry continues to thrive
>> The video game industry generated revenues of $4.9 billion dollars in the first nine months of 2001, up 34 percent from the same period a year ago, according to a new report by the NPD research group. Naturally, the nine-month results don’t take into account the launches and resultant sales of the Microsoft Xbox and the Nintendo GameCube. By year’s end, analysts predict that the industry will generate a record year in revenues, surpassing the $6.1 billion in revenues it recorded in 1999. In terms of software sales, Nintendo leads the pack with five out of the top 10 best-selling games, followed by Sony, Activision, and Electronic Arts.

EU/Jap/Korean Xbox launch
>> Xbox launched in the US last week. Having initially promised to ship the console globally on day one, Microsoft more recently delayed the Japanese launch to February 2002. Xbox arrives in Europe the following month.
But Korean buyers will have to wait until October 2002 - almost a year after the console's US launch, a Microsoft Korea source claimed, according to the Korea Herald.
