EA Goes Xbox Live
>> From xbox.ign.com:
After years of discussions, Electronic Arts and Microsoft are putting the final touches on a partnership enabling four of EA's sports titles, and possibly three non-sports games, to go online with Xbox Live this fall, IGN learned today. The Redwood City, Ca.-based publisher will announce its strategy at the annual Electronic Entertainment Exposition this May, but it may reveal plans earlier to investors this April 29, during its upcoming fiscal announcement.
"They're psyched," a former EA employee, who asked not to be identified, told IGN. "EA is going to bring its games to Live this year. It's finally happening." Madden NFL 2005, NCAA College Football, NASCAR Thunder 2005, and NBA Live comprise the sports package for Xbox Live this fall. The non-sports games are less concrete, but as IGN has learned from several sources close to the company, Battlefield: Modern Combat, EA's new GoldenEye game, and perhaps Burnout 3 are first in line for Xbox online compatibility. Fix for Memory-X game in tHc LITE
>> BobMcGee released a final gamefix for tHc LITE(info) indash game Memory-x. From iceuk on xboxdash.net:
Sorry for the buggy release. This xap should correct all known bugs making everything work 100%.
What's fixed: -Bug were if you roll over a turned over tile it will make it permanently hilighted. -Bug were if you turn over the third tile on the top row and roll over it, all tiles to which you move become hilighted. -Bug were if you tie a top score the keyboard won't come down. -Bug were if you beat a top score it doesn't move the score you beat down, it simply replaces the score you beat. -Bug were you could select the same tile twice. -Bug where the game intro effect wouldn't work after the first time There are no known other bugs out there. If you find one, let me know and I'll fix it. Otherwise enjoy.
*romwell with Sparkle Integration
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
Ok, so here it is. A new version of Cromwell(info) and Xromwell(info) with direct boot to Sparkle. You no longer need to burn Sparkle to a CD, you simply place two files (sparkle and sprkrd.gz) into E: along with an updated linuxboot.cfg (or you can let xbvset update it for you, this is why I've been bugging you to run magic!). There is a third icon now which is labelled "Sparkle", click this and your filesystems will be checked and fixed (hopefully, at least).
If this doesn't get you excited, then this should... Oliver has looked over the USB code in *romwell and discovered what made USB work intermittently. After a few reboots, its now evident (at least to me) that USB works perfectly! No longer will you have to keep rebooting because your keyboard, mouse or xpad refuse to work!
*romwell has also had somewhat of a facelift, the backdrop is the same, but the visual feedback is much improved (in my opinion). It no longer throws useless information in your face, but it now tells you exactly what its doing, when its doing it, and if it was successful or not. Anyway, enough talk. Go download it! It's in the "Sparkle" section in downloads. Please follow the instructions carefully as you could potentially make your system non-bootable if you mess up the linuxboot.cfg! Enjoy!
Xbox sales jump, but so do expenses
>> From gamespot.com:
Today, Microsoft Corp released its quarterly financial statement to Wall Street and investors. The company's eight divisions reported a profit of $1.32 billion for the quarter ending March 31, substantially off the $2.14 billion profit the company reported for same quarter a year ago.
Of greatest interest to the game community, however, are the results of the Home and Entertainment division, the division that the Xbox and game sales fall under. For the quarter, Microsoft claims Xbox sales were 30 percent higher this quarter compared to a year earlier--the increase due in part to the recent price drop, according to Microsoft. In addition, and in numbers that conform to earlier projections, the company maintains that it expects to have sold between 14.5 and 16 million consoles by the end of June, and that it still expects to have a million Xbox Live subscribers by that time as well.
Home and Entertainment division revenue for the quarter was $530 million, compared to $453 million a year ago. However, when figuring in operating expenses, overall, the Xbox division reported a loss of $209 million. The company still has a vast war chest lined with cash. At the end of the quarter, the tally of cash stood at $56 billion, $3 billion more than it reported just three months earlier.
Xbox Live! to launch in NZ
>> On April 29, Xbox Live! in New Zealand turns pure Kiwi, when our own service goes – excuse the pun – live. Since December last year, Microsoft's online gaming service has been piggybacking off the Australian service, but this month marks New Zealand's roll out into Xbox's worldwide gaming service, says Wilf Robinson, head of Xbox in New Zealand.
At a launch announcement in Auckland last week, which also heralded the New Zealand release of Atari's V8 Supercars 2, Robinson said it was an exciting time for Xbox, with 1000 starter kits having been sold since December, joining the already 750,000 Xbox Live! gamers around the world. Robinson says judging by the strong sales of Live! starter kits, which until now offered access to the Australian service, Kiwi Xbox gamers were keen to take their gaming to the next level. Robinson says that next month, Kiwi gamers that are on the Australian service will have to swap their Live subscription to the New Zealand one, so they were connected to the New Zealand network.

Xbox nudges ahead - Australia
>> MICROSOFT'S Xbox price cut has appeared to pay off, with the company claiming its first ever weekly sales win against arch rival Sony PlayStation 2.
In the week ending April 18, Xbox took 50 per cent of the "next generation" console market, 15 per cent ahead of PlayStation2. Nintendo's GameCube accounted for 7 per cent of sales during the week, Microsoft said, quoting figures from industry analyst GfK. The Xbox win has been a long time coming, with the PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles fighting a pitched battle for more than two years.

Justice Dept. Cracks Down on Net Piracy
>> From news.yahoo.com:
WASHINGTON - Undercover investigations into Internet piracy identified more than 100 people in the United States and abroad involved in the theft of more than $50 million worth of music, movies and software, U.S. authorities said Thursday. More than 120 searches were conducted in a 24-hour period in 27 states and 10 countries in an effort to dismantle organizations known by such names as Fairlight, Kalisto, Echelon, Class, Project X and APC, officials said.
The initiative, known as "Operation Fastlink," has resulted in the seizure of more than 200 computers, including 30 that served as storage and distribution hubs containing thousands of copies of pirated material. One server seized in the United States contained 65,000 separate pirated titles, authorities said. Among the countries in which FBI searches have been conducted are Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden and Great Britain.
Xbox Live Upgraded Features Announced
>> From dailygame.net:
Microsoft announced today the latest updates to the Xbox Live service. For those who haven't heard, the Live system has been and will continue to be down for the rest of the day for the upgrades.
Once it's back online, Xbox Live users will get to send electronic voicemail friend requests and voicemail game invites to one another. As new games are developed, they can (at the developer's discretion) take advantage of new features: * Teams: Gamers can create teams, or "clans" to share strategies, set up games and share other info. * Competitions: The XSN concept moves to the console itself, as gamers won't need to use the XSN web site to set up tourneys for the games they love to play. Xbox Live will track the stats and keep gamers updated via their consoles on their current standings. * Content sharing: Develop and share logos, maps and other content and share them through online storage. * Level Playing Field technology: Anti-cheating measures can be employed by game developers to limit the effects of people dropping from a losing game or other weak ways of messing with the stats systems.
dvd2xbox 0.5.6
>> A new version of dvd2xbox(info) has been released. What's new/fixed: * added possibility to rip to WAV. dvd2xbox now supports audio cd ripping to WAV, Ogg Vorbis and MP3. * added possibility to disable the automatic media change detection in the settings menu. Afterwards the media detection needs to be started manually with the BACK button in the main menu. This is only useful for those where external drives don't detect the media change. dvd2xbox may freeze when you press the BACK button and no media is present. * changed dumpdir tags in dvd2xbox.xml. You could now add as many dumpdirs you want. * added basic SmartX and Xenium LCD support. Enable it via the settings menu. (not tested due to lack of hardware. Please report bugs/non bugs to xbox-scene.com). * removed auto patching item from settings as it confuses to many people and is obsolete. * fixed: dvd2xbox freezes after copying more than 50 files with long names (please test it with MotoTrax, I couldn't get a hand on it). * fixed: title editor overwrites the title id which makes game saves unusable. * small bugfixes and improvements. Attention: the dvd2xbox.xml syntax has changed ! Use the xml provided with dvd2xbox and change it to your needs.

XBMC reaches 1.0 Beta, bug bash kick-off! XBMP discontinued!
>> From Gamester17 on xboxmediacenter.com:
We are happy to announce the current XBMC CVS as 1.0 Beta ready, thus our first official public bug bash has begun and we are now on a feature freeze. As the time has come when XboxMediaCenter(info) finally starting to reach maturity we also like to declare that the era of XboxMediaPlayer(info) is over. The King is dead, long live the King! It's now time for XBMC to take the throne from its predecessor, so from today we officially do not support or develop XBMP any more; the XBMP forums will still be kept open but unmoderated, and development will only done on XBMC from now on. For those who missed it, XBMC/XboxMediaCenter is our successor to XBMP/XboxMediaPlayer, (yes both are/were developed by ourselves, the XBMP/XBMC-Team), we have been working very hard on XBMC over the past 6 months and to show its readiness we have put together this XBMC vs. XBMP comparison chart. Note that we are going to need your help during this bug bash period, now more than ever, only with your help can we get the first XBMC 1.0 release candidate ready in a matter of weeks. The feature freeze means that no new features will be implemented into XBMC until XBMC 1.0 final source code has been locked down.

OS Independent Games?
>> From Cliff on slashdot.org:
Jakyll asks: "Why aren't there [more] games for the PC that come on a BOOTABLE CD-ROM? Use Linux and autodetect the hardware - it would make DirectX and Microsoft irrelevant. Boot the disk just like your PC was a Playstation or an XBox - what is the main reason this isn't happening?" A few publications have been released like this: Gentoo has done this for UT 2003 and America's Army (they have their own site but it appears to be broken at this time); and there are the ScummVM Live CD ISOs, out there. Does anyone if the major game studios have plans on doing something similar, or if not, the reasons why they aren't?
Fba-xxx 20-04-2004 build
>> Fba-xxx is a port of FBA (emulator for MC68000/Z80 based arcade games). GogoAckman continued work based on the sources of Lantus' FBA-X(info) b4 (that is based on FBA for PC). New sources are also released on his site.
What's new/fixed (compared to FBA-X b4): * mix with the latest source of FBA PC version, cheats in unibios now work in AES mode. * save of settings in the ini folder of Fbaxxx. * possibility to choose the differents menus order and to display them or not, and even to return to original version (no menus) * possibility to overclock neo-geo processor (12 to 18Mhz), it is better in kof97 or metal slug. * delete of the cube. * removed neogeo.zip in rom list menu (no reason to be there). * no crc and no size (works randomly byt the way). * possibility to activate the turbo mode (like kawaxx, right stick to right). * new interface with 4 menus (cps1-2,neogeo,others) and moved text to fit on TV screen, the fast scroll command is now on left stick. * Warning message when launching rom. * new skins. * fix CPS1 sound (sound in ghouls,... and cps1 game lagging after launching a cps2 game). * auto reset when setting dipswitches. * fix for slow sound in PAL50 mode (but the game is always slow). * possibility to boot only on universe bios (rename unibios to uni-bios.rom) * fix for "adjust screen", it is now like kawaxxx * save of button config by mode (cps1-2, neogeo or other) * save of selected bios fixed !! (now, even in universe bios mode, all parameters (mode/region) are saved, even after a reboot!) * Add of "system 16" (Be warned it is only on early stage, so there is no sound and some commands are not working) * Possibility to choose 4 different paths for roms (no more mixing!!!) * Add of 2001 drivers, with the accord of FBA Team. * I fixed the "bug" for directrories. * The game button config is now saved by game too (you'll just have to go to controller option while playing (I added this option in the same time)). * The new options (turbo, overclock,...) are now displayed correctly without having to activate/desactivate them. * Add of neogeo macros (A+B,...) * Sort roms by name. * Fix for ini changing name sometimes

Videogame Lounges Take LAN Centers Mainstream?
>> From simoniker on games.slashdot.org:
Thanks to the New York Times for its article (free reg. req.) discussing the rise of the videogame lounge as mass-market gaming centers. The article argues: "Offering a happy-hour substitute for 20- and even 30-somethings, video lounges might forever uncouple the terms 'hard core' and 'gamer.' They make video games accessible to adults who don't know the difference between 'Halo' and 'Mojo,' and are afraid to ask." Although similar (or interchangeable with?) the long-standing LAN gaming center, the piece argues: "Video games are sauntering further into the mainstream with Xbox and PlayStation lounges. They have sprung up in resorts like Telluride, Colo., and as adjuncts to dance clubs like Play in New York and Avalon in Hollywood, which last week installed a PlayStation 2 in its V.I.P. penthouse." Being the only third party xbox dash to have a 3d user interface, professionally-made architecture and coding, combined with amazingly talented peoples editing, adding and improvents of original features, tHc has functions beyond what can be expected from other dashboards.
What is tHc? tHc is effectively an edited and improved version of the xbox's default msdash using the original .xbe and xip structure. This means the dashboard was made by professionals with a large budget from the biggest software corporation in the world. It looks fantastic because of this (and because of others hard work). There are draw backs. At present there can be NO FTP usage due to us needing the source and a way in which to recompile it and there can also be no non-native forms of media such as WMV files. However, the advantages, we believe, greatly out weigh the disadvantages. What other dash plays dvd's!?
Whats new in tHc LITE? Whats not new!? **Short Intro **Massivly improved music-managment system **Config.xbx file for easy editing from PC and/or xpad etc. **Easy-to-use new skinning system **full dvd-remote compatability **New 3d elements on orb **"Dulling-out" load **Mini-game! **No need for shutdown and reboot .xbe's! **Completely re-written xaps **No crashing!!! **Music CP avaliable through all sub-sections **Clock merged into music CP **Improved sub-menus system **Less "floating"
From Discworld on xboxdash.net:
At the moment, unfortunatly, only a green version of it is avaliable, however blue is just round the corner. BMP2XIP will also be avaliable for download too.
Updates: **New LITE tutorial avaliable in downloads section **New "The evolution of a Skin" avaliable in Features section, following the gradual maturing of the OASIS skin.
To get LITE, logon to #xboxdash on EFnet, and type !thclite or watch out for the adverts for Towlie's ftp

Microsoft to acquire Bioware?
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Internet reports suggest that Microsoft is set to acquire Canadian RPG development studio Bioware, with the company planning to announce this latest addition to its developer line-up at the E3 trade show next month. According to the reports, a senior Microsoft Game Studios official broke the information under condition of anonymity; our own sources at the company remained tight-lipped on the subject today, but did confirm that the company is hoping to have a "massive" announcement at E3.
Bioware is one of the most successful developers of RPG titles outside Japan, and it most recently won success - both critical and commercial - for its Star Wars title, Knights of the Old Republic. Previous titles have included hugely popular PC RPGs Neverwinter Knights and Baldur's Gate.
xboxhdm v1.0
>> A new mini linux distro to aid xbox harddrive management From the readme: This is basically just another little linux distro. Build for the special needs us xbox softmodders have. I found the need for such a distro since the windows-based tools to access fatx-drives suck!
However, most people are not very familiar with linux - sad in my opinion but true. Therefore I include a tool in this distributions that automates most of the tasks when dealing with xbox HD management. Read readme_xboxhdm.txt for more info on this.
This distro is built around the vanilla-2.4.25 kernel with the latest fatx-patches from xbox-linux as of April 6 2004. The basis tools are provided by busybox. Furthermore I included : mkfs.fatx (from xboxdumper), xboxhd (the hd management script), lynx (console-based web-browser) and the eject tool. I included framebuffer support in the kernel as well as fat32, etx2, ext3,reiserfs,jfs and ntfs (read-only) support. I also tried to inlude most common nic-drivers so propably you have internet connection aswell.
Thanks to everybody I borrowed code from... Most init-scripts are from the xlinux distro. Thanks to xbox-linux for their fatx-patches. Thanks to all testers who helped discovering bugs.

OzXodus: Xenium clones guaranteed to fail
>> Update from ozxodus.com:
The time has finally come when all of us here at Team OzXodus, have decided to stop playing games and move to the next level. Accusations by many skeptics out there have been rife and, actually, for a large part, justified. As we have said many times before it has been very difficult to reveal all our secrets and plans and we have taken it all quietly and patiently. Delays in updates, secrecy, childish posts, lack of protection for our product, are just a few of the sentiments we have picked up over the past few months. Despite that, all our loyal supporters have remained loyal and have kept their faith in us and, in fact, sales figures have far surpassed expectations. The news we are about to reveal will explain some of our strategy, will provide clarification and justification for the above statements, and most importantly, will further prove why loyal Xenium supporters will never be let down or deceived.
DEATH TO THE FAKES: All fake Xenium clones WILL FAIL. It is just a matter of when. There is a reason why our chip is branded 4th generation and that reason is very simple and straightforward. Xenium OS(info). No O.S; No chip. Simple enough?
Super Crypt Stealth ACT. Super = super, Crypt Stealth= secret, A.C.T.= Anti Clone Technology. So, once the shock and horror has sunk in let us assure you of our GUARANTEE! We can, we already have, and we will continue to remove our OS from any fake chip. PERIOD. Many fakes have already started to die and the rest will soon follow. It is just a matter of time.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank co-developers such as k3rn3l from Xecuter for the advice and guidance about ensuring adequate protection early on and would like to say that we do listen! We also know what we are doing and are very sure that true developers will banter and compete fairly and openly for market share but when it comes to low life scum who threaten the betterment and development of the scene we have to pull together. (Don’t know if that is the common view of other teams but that is definitely the view of this team.) We have warned and warned and even hinted many times, but it seems some retailers and the stupid cloners themselves are so greedy that they chose to ignore us, and in fact continue to arrogantly threaten and gloat. We hope that these people who have promised two for one guarantees now see how utterly pathetic and stupid they really are. Two of anything that does not work is even worse than one that does not work. What sort of guarantee is that? We hope that customers who have been ripped off and defrauded of their money are determined enough to demand their money back so that they can finally buy a GENUINE working Xenium. Should you need any assistance and advice please get in touch with us and we will gladly help.
