Gentoox Home v2.0 coming soon...
>> From http://gentoox.shallax.com:
Uploading of Gentoox Home v2.0 begins, here is the README.txt to keep you interested. ETA 25/05/03, some time in the afternoon (GMT)
I'VE FINISHED MESSING AROUND WITH THE MAGIC SYSTEM! If you have ANY issues in Gentoox Home v1, just reinstall Gentoox then rerun magic (Takes 1 hour at most!). Gentoox Home v1 will no longer have 800x600 support. Only v2 will have this. Home v1 will continue to be updated and is by no means obsolete, it is for those who cant get 800x600 to work with their TVs! For those of you with Kernel patching issues, this is due to Sourceforge's unreliable CVS servers. The magic patch requires a stable connection to SF's CVS servers during the installation, often their servers are overloaded or down. In either case, the kernel patch will fail and produce a useless kernel. This is the whole reason why I'm releasing Gentoox Home v2! Stay with me, It will definitely be worth the wait! To be 100% sure that no issues are experienced by Home v1 users, I have disabled automatic kernel upgrades through the magic system. If you still insist on wanting to upgrade the kernel in v1, then you may run "magic force-kernel" (this will only work on Home v1 installations!!!)
*UPDATE* Fixed a bug regarding Home v1's linuxboot.cfg file in the kernel installation script ;) Should work perfectly now *UPDATE 2* Home v2 features an updated Mozilla (v1.3) *UPDATE 3* All of the updated software is installed, and the configuration files patched, now I just have to test it all *gulp* *UPDATE 4* It all tested out fine :) I'm zipping it up now (rather than raring), I'll explain the reason later, if it ever comes to fruition :D
One on one with Xbox top dog
>> Canada.com posted a real nice interview with Robbie Bach, chief Xbox office (CXO) and vice president of the Home & Entertainment Division at Microsoft Corp.
Here are some of the Q&A's:
Q. Is Xbox becoming more than a gaming machine in a living room? A. Gaming is the centre of Xbox, but the definition of gaming and interactive entertainment as a whole is going to broaden. We believe music, movie, TV and video games is a powerful combination that will lead to new things.
Q. You now have PC, Internet and cell phone connectivity with the Xbox, plus Karaoke. How are you addressing security issues now that the Xbox is stepping out of the safe living room? A. We are designing everything we are doing to provide security as a service for both player and game publisher. For example, we can sense and disable an Xbox modified with third party "modchips" and not allow it to play online.
Q. Folks have even built a Linux-Xbox computer. How can you control this? A. Electronic hobbyists will do what they want to do...the numbers are not really that big. It’s not a commercial as much as it is an intellectual property issue and we always pursue those. If someone finds a way to cheat, we close it down and do an update so people can't anymore.
Q. How soon will we see a new Xbox console to counter Sony’s rumoured PS3 model? A. Well, tell me when PlayStation 3 ships and I will tell you we are going to be there at the same time. But I will tell you, Sony will not have the benefit of the 12 to 24 month head start they had in most markets with their current console. We are very focused on being there with a great product. HyperG's Stance on DoomX Leakage
>> From HyperG on xboxhacker.net:
This really isn't meant as a news story, but I'm going to make it be to defend myself since I'm not given a chance anywhere else.
The old beta mentioned was given to me January 6th of this year. It does not contain 4 player as mentioned by Lantus. Just had network 1 vs 1.
The person who has another copy of a beta is xkaliber (irc efnet). Xkaliber claims to have gotten it from Lantus himself. Xkaliber had asked Lantus a question about the beta, on how to get network play working. Lantus freaked out and had already assumed it was my beta, even though Xkaliber claims to have gotten it from Lantus himself.
A confusing so called leakage, a damn shame to suspend a project that hasn't had any progress for 5 months. Sites like Consolevision.com are so anti-HyperG about me just because of a leak I did 1 year ago, so of course people will say I did this one too, just because it's Doom. Idiots shouldn't have left a beta on the server if they didn't want it out then. It's ironic to blame me on a leak of DoomX I didn't commit. It's not even publically leaked so why b**ch ? This has ruined me in many ways . . . I hope the retarded chocolate army guy wh16 is having fun on consolevision.com talking crap about me.
update: Looks like it's deleted from xboxhacker.net now...
Ed's Debian gets its own website
>> From Xbox-Linux:
Ed's Debian now has a subsite of its own on the Xbox Linux main web server.
The Debian pages will focus on serving the Xbox Debian users with introductory information, hints, tips, direct links to installation tutorials and fresh news about the current Xbox Debian issues and developments.
It is also hoped that the site would act as a central hub for the Xbox Debian developer community where people can easily check out the current status of the distribution. With status reports, TO-DO lists, future goals and open issues on open display it should be easier to see what needs to be worked on and where the Xbox Debian project is currently heading to.
The idea is to gradually expand the site with new features it in the future and divide it into subsections when the need arises. However, it was felt that it is better to start up rapidly right now - with a simple static page and some useful information on it - instead of delaying the launch.
DoomX development suspended indefinetly.
>> From Lantus on http://www.lantus-x.com/ClassicX/:
Thanks to HyperG, DoomX development has been suspended until further notice. You can thank him for leaking out a release which boasted 4 player network support and other fixes, of which i know of 2 other people who have this release.
All emails to me about this subject will be deleted instantly so dont bother hassling me about it.
800x600 in Gentoox and Gentoox Home v2.0
>> More development coming from ShALLaX:
VERY GOOD NEWS!!! Ive figured out a way to make Gentoox totally universal between NTSC and PAL. Upon first boot, Gentoox Home v2.0 asks you to select your resolution, saves the info, then reboots and starts up KDE with all the right settings :D I'm going to run some final tests, then send on the new release to some beta testers (NTSC and PAL) to see what they make of it :) Thanks for your patience! Sorry, I MAJORLY screwed up the magic patches and I apologise to those who installed them. Im having certain issues on NTSC boxes with this new version of Gentoox. Id be grateful if people could do the following: rm -rf /etc/conf.d/kernel* && rm -rf /etc/conf.d/alsad && magic fix xvbset && magic
Then tell me if these new settings work for you!!! Thanks! (Or just start an installation of Gentoox from scratch then run magic!). Be sure to run xbvset after installing all the patches. IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT MESSING UP YOUR XBOX, DONT RUN MAGIC!!!!
ALSA support in Gentoox
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
That was lucky, I woke up extremely early for some reason :\. The patch tested successfully so I've moved it on to magic. Enjoy! Run 'magic' now to install ALSA support, and make sure you read installation instructions carefully or you WILL ruin your installation.
*UPDATE* Just made some final tweaks to the alsa patch so it can be reinstalled. This is required as if you were to recompile your kernel, you'd need to reinstall the alsa modules. Also, emerge sync has been made 100% optional (except for people who have not synced before - i.e. first time booting and running magic).
*UPDATE 2* I've also added a new patch called 'xbvset' which allows you to effortlessly change your xbv modeline. Check out the patches page for more info.
ALSA support means support for 5.1 Dolby, mpg123 etc... You can find more info about ALSA on www.alsa-project.org. Thanks to ShALLaX this will now also work under Gentoox!
