XBoyAdvance v20
>> Xport released a new version of XBoyAdvance(info), a GBA/GBC/GB/SGB/SGB2 emulator for Xbox. What's new/fixed: * Reverted back to 1.7.2 core * Implemented relevant portions of VBAsmooth code * Delayed auto-load save states to avoid strange slowdown. Sometimes when the auto-loading of save states happened, the GBA emulation would be very very sluggish, like the timing is off. Seems the GBA emulation needs to "warm-up" for a second before loading the save state.

XLink One Development News: New Features
>> Team XLink posted more about the developement of the new XLink One, that will replace the XLink Kai(info) multi-platform global gaming network:
Here's a list of some of the most frequently requested features for xlink one. Unless I really screw something up, all of these will be in the first release. If there's something else you think should be on here, let me know!
* The overhead that xlink one will add to packets has been reduced by more than 90%. As a result people with limited upload bandwidth will be able to host more people. * Adding somebody to your friends list works the way you would expect - they get a notification asking for permission, and they have the option to add you at the same time. * You can set an away message. People who have you on their friends list will be able to see it even after you sign off. * You can see the last time people on your friends list were online. * You can block people - their chat messages will not appear on your screen and they won't be able to send you private messages. This will carry over between logins. * You can ban people - they won't be able to join arenas you create. This also carries over between logins. * You can lock and unlock your arenas. * You can change the maximum number of players allowed in your arena after it is created. * You can transfer ownership of your arena to somebody else, so if you're getting ready to sign off people can keep playing. * You can grant other people moderator status in your arena. You can also make this permanent so they automatically have it in any arenas you create.
Xbox Live business model must change, says Arena.net founder
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz this week, Guild Wars developer Arena.net co-founder Jeff Strain has said that the business model used by Microsoft's Xbox Live service needs to be overhauled before the service will be attractive to MMOG developers.
Strain, who was a senior developer at Blizzard before leaving to set up Arena.net, believes that the business model used by Xbox Live is fundamentally not designed for the close relationships MMOG operators require with their players and community. "Their whole goal is to encourage people to go and buy games on the shelf, then there's an online component for it," he explained. "But for us, when you buy it on the shelf, that's just the beginning of our relationship with you - and we want a direct connection with our customer so that we're always giving you new content, always supporting you directly. Xbox Live just wasn't really built, from a business standpoint, to support that."
Strain acknowledged that seeking to take the customer relationship away from the platform holder and back into the hands of the publisher or developer would be a difficult thing to negotiate, but he remains optimistic that both Microsoft and Sony will embrace the opportunity represented by the MMO market.
Microsoft Evaluating Xbox 360 Launch in China
>> From gamasutra.com:
Microsoft is slowly evaluating the possibility of launching the Xbox 360 in China. "It's a very controlled environment," Alan Bowman, Microsoft's general manager of entertainment and devices for Asia Pacific and Greater China, told the Associated Press. "We're going to make sure that we make the right moves, develop the right content, have the right partnerships in place. It's not something you want to rush in and do." Console manufacturers are often wary of launching product in mainland China, due to the region's relatively low per-capita salary and issues regarding piracy.
Xbox Live Free Weekend Coming (but not quite yet...)
>> From the Team Xbox Gamerscore Blog:
When we first announced Xbox Live for the Xbox 360, we mentioned that we were building the ability to have "free weekends" for Xbox Live Silver members. If you have cable TV or satellite, you've seen something similar when HBO offers access for a few days, so you can see what you're missing...
Some sharp-eyed gamers noticed the Xbox Live Calendar of Events on Xbox.com included the first Xbox Live Free Weekend [planned on April 1st]. The Xbox.com team pulled it down, because the dates were tentative, and details of the promotion still haven't been finalized. We'll share details as soon as we can.
In the meantime, make sure you're signed up with Xbox Live Silver, so you're ready when we actually announce the program. As you might have guessed, it's coming soon. For those of you who have an Xbox 360, but haven't signed up for Xbox Live yet, you shouldn't wait. The free account lets you create your gamer profile and friends list, plus you get access to Xbox Live Marketplace, including Xbox Live Arcade, demos, and trailers.
Microsoft Sees Positive Outlook for Xbox 360 in Korea
>> From teamxbox.com:
To Microsoft's surprise, the initial batch of pre-order units in Korea sold out in only nine hours. Alan Bowman, general manager of Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division in Asia Pacific and Greater China Region, Microsoft is confident the Xbox 360 will perform in Korea better than in Japan.
Microsoft Korea officials explained that given the taxes, the price of Xbox 360 in Korea is highly competitive compared with pricing elsewhere in Asia. The retail price for the Xbox 360 Premium Edition will be 419,000 Won (~433usd or ~363eur). The Core package is priced at 339,000 Won (~351usd or ~294eur). Bowman also explained they have already learned a few lessons after the unfortunate Japanese launch. "We will make more games in Korean, and the important part of our success is to have Korean developers localize games," Bowman said.
OpenDash WIP Update: Input Issues

XLink One Development News: The User Interface
>> Team XLink posted more about the developemnt of the new XLink One, which will replace XLink Kai(info):
* What is the User Interface (UI)? There are a number of user interfaces available for XLink Kai. There's the default Windows GUI that most people use and are familiar with. There's also a Java version called jKaiUI. There's also gKaiUI, ncurses, Amarylis, and even XBMC has a Kai GUI built into it.
* What's changing? xlink one will not ship with a standard GUI application. Instead, the engine has a web server built into it, and the user interface is all HTML, CSS, and Javascript that will run in your browser regardless of what operating system you're running on. This isn't a basic web interface either - it's a full Ajax application, so there's no need for refreshing the page or anything like that. It works just like you'd expect a real GUI to.
It currently works with IE 6 and Firefox 1.5, and we're close to getting Opera working as well. Safari needs some more tweaking, but I'm optimistic that we can get it running there too.
* What's New? Because it's 100% HTML, CSS, and Javascript, the GUI will be completely skinnable and extendable. We're also making things cleaner and easier to use. We're still in the process of nailing down the layout so I can't post any screenshots yet, but a lot more information about the design and specific features in new UI will be described as work is completed.
* Where is it? The current pre-beta build of the new xlink one engine has the built-in web server. There's a working GUI that mimics most of the layout and functionality of the current Windows interface. Testers are using it, and it works. The new branch of the xlink one engine abandons the old layout in favor of a more streamlined approach. As I mentioned before, the new look is still very rough, but we'll keep you updated as the design gets closer to completion.
Changes in the system will have an effect on existing GUI applications. I'm not sure yet if it'll be possible to keep using existing GUIs in some sort of backward-compatibility mode. But with all the new stuff we're adding, why would you want to do that? At the very least we'll do what we can to get XBMC updated to work with xlink one.
If you're a developer and you're familiar with the API that Xlink Kai uses to communicate with the GUI, that UDP interface will still be there although some of the commands are changing.
Activision ordered not to show 'misleading' Call of Duty 2 ads again
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld complaints from three television viewers that adverts depicting scenes from Activision title Call of Duty 2 and its current generation console counterpart CoD2: Big Red One were misleading, and declared that they must not be shown again in their present forms.
The adjudication, published today, is likely to send shockwaves through the industry as it focuses on the question of whether pre-rendered footage is an acceptable representation of a computer game - in its defence, Activision didn't argue that it was, but rather that using pre-rendered footage was "common practice". In this case, the ASA received three complaints - two concerning Call of Duty 2 (PC, Xbox 360) and one concerning Big Red One (PS2, Xbox, Cube), both of which argued that the graphics used in the advert were superior to that of the game itself, and that viewers were being misled on those grounds. >> These are pictures of the Xbox 360 Transfer Kit that will be released soon by Datel at an expected retail price around $14.99. It allows to easily connect an Xbox 360 memorycard to a PC USB port for those who don't want to mod the memcard themselves (see how here or here). The device comes with software called Xchange360 ... that (at this moment) can only backup and restore the whole memory card image (basicly a GUI version of Xbox Dumper(info)). You'll need to use homebrew software like Xplorer360(info), wxHdd(info), wxPirs(info) and wxTheme(info) to fully access and modify the files on your memcard.
Official Features: * Transfer gamesaves, downloads, user data and related files. * Share your great gamesaves, themes and gamer pics on a globabl scale. * Effectively use your PC as a huge memory unit. * Super easy to use, just plug the memory unit into the docking port and connect it to any USB enabled PC.

XBoyAdvance v18
>> Xport released a new version of XBoyAdvance(info), a GBA/GBC/GB/SGB/SGB2 emulator for Xbox. What's new/fixed: * Updated to v1.8.0b sources * GUI brought up to date with any missing features * Much more robust mp3 playlist features * People who cannot display 480i should be able to see something now * 480p, 720p should work fine now * Previously, all save state files, config files, sram files were stored in one directory. Now each game gets its own directory. This will allow for 4096 games. 4096 is the maximum number of files/subdirectories that can exist in one directory on the XBox. Existing files are moved automatically. * Fixed bug with ISO9660 DVD images where information could not be read past the first 2GB of data on the disc. The directory would be displayed fine, but when you selected a game that existed past the first half of the disc, it would fail. * Video lines shifted up to fix problem with lines getting cut off on the bottom. * Fixed white strip in upper left corner when emulator plays first game. * New option to autoload the last game you played upon launching the emulator. Find it on the second page of Configuration-]General * When you change the save type for GBA, the SRAM file will automatically be deleted. Previously, if you did not delete the save file if one was already created, it would get read in which caused problems. This is useful for when you select the wrong initial SRAM type for certain games (like Dragon Ball Z). * Added locked-aspect-ratio mode when resizing the game screen * Implemented a few misc GBA bugfixes from various other sources

Shane Kim Interview: Halo 3 , Launch, Stock, Demand
>> Next-gen.biz posted an interview with Shane Kim, Microsoft Game Studios general manager. Here's an excerpt:
* Next-gen.biz: Is Halo3 coming out this year? * Shane Kim: It depends. If it's the game that everyone is expecting then, yes. For us it's about making a proper impact on the platform. It has to be something with huge significance, so we won't be rushed.
* Next-gen.biz: Looking back at the launch, and leaving shortages aside, any regrets? * Shane Kim: Any game developer will tell you they wish they had more time with the hardware. That's always the case. If you look at the complexity of this console and you add Live... With the first generation of Xbox we waited a year before launching Live; this year everything went out together. It would have been better to have more time with the development hardware. But this is not a trivial undertaking. It's very challenging to create this hardware and a network like this.
* Next-gen.biz: Some have said that the launch lacked a single killer game. * Shane Kim: I don't think that's fair. Everyone is looking for a Halo and a GTA, but we have to realize there are only two of those titles in history, and they weren't those big legends before they launched. It is easy to look back and say 'nothing the size of Halo came out', but the launch titles were all solid good games and there was some amazing work. I would put this portfolio up against the original Xbox launch portfolio any day. I don't see the fact that there wasn't one game that everyone wanted to buy as a criticism. The strength was in the variety.
Xbox 360 Camera and Microphone Details
>> An interview with Microsoft's Kumar Banerjee has been posted on xbox.com with some details about the upcoming Camera and Microphone accessoires:
* In-Camera Video Processing The camera itself is capable of not only receiving the information, but also processing it. It's no mean feat in something so small, and it allows the console to run unfettered, as the image processing doesn't suck up all its bandwidth.
* Thirty Frames per Second The camera is capable of capturing 30 frames per second. If you need a standard for comparison, think about this: Television is displayed at 30 frames per second, most video games are displayed at 30 frames per second (though developers are striving to make 60 the norm), and film is captured and displayed at 27 frames per second.
* Stills Like any good video camera, the camera is also capable of taking still images (with 1.3 megapixels of memory) as well. Your faces can be imported into games or accompany your name on leader boards for even more recognition and fame.
* Low Light Performance We gamers love playing in the dark--most gaming environments have very low illumination, and the camera is designed specifically with that in mind.
* Video Chat To further illustrate the point, he mentioned, "It's not just the camera, we have the microphone as well." The microphone plugs directly into the controller and allows your voice to carry through to the recipient's TV or stereo speakers. The microphone connected to the Xbox 360 Controller allows group chat, unlike the Xbox 360 Headset. Video chat and video messaging with your friends will become an integrated part of the Xbox Live experience.
* Gesture Gaming The specs for the camera are something to behold, and the ability to hold quality video chats with your friends is just plain neat. But what use does it have in gaming? Banerjee responds with a couple of interesting points. "It will open the door for the future of gesture gaming, and it goes hand-in-hand with the software that's developed for it." In short, the camera offers developers the ability to add elements of gameplay that could directly respond to your own actions. For example, imagine controlling a squad of soldiers by silently gesturing where to go, instead of issuing a voice command and alerting nearby guards. This ushers in a new generation of fun online motion detection-enabled games where you use your body to control on-screen characters over Xbox Live. The camera and microphone offer the functionality, so now it's up to the game developers to find innovative ways to implement it.
The Valley (Halo2) Time has past since the original blood gulch battles, but centuries later, the war between bases still rages on.

Xbox 360 'Jump Rope' Commercial in Best Spots of 2005 List
>> The Xbox 360 "Jump Rope" TV commercial made it into Adweek's (the advertising experts) list of best ads of 2005. It's not the best ad of 2005 ... that adward goes to Comcast (It's Comcastic!), but it's in the "best of the rest" list of just 50 spots selected out of 1,300 submissions for Best Spots of the Year, along with about 1,200 spots that were reviewed throughout the year for Best Spots of the Month.
Stream it from google video/youtube.com or download it from our servers here(3.54MB). Personally I prefer the "Splash" commercial or even the non-aired "Stand Off".
