More Xbox v1.2 news ...
>> Based on information released by XBOX_Mod (here) IBNewBe managed to mod his new xbox v1.2 xbox. He posted some pictures of the install on the X-ecuter Forum here.

Apparently this is the new point that has to be grounded in order to boot from LPC (this would mean there's no new protection in the nvidia chip). But he also posted this :
I booted the machine with the original HDD and it showed the X-Ecuter II where the Microsoft logo was.

I booted again using my customized Slayer's automated installer DVD, everything looked normal.

I removed the original HDD and installed a Maxtor 120 gig. (Making sure the jumper was in the right place) and rebooted the machine again. This time I got an error 06.

I removed the 120 giger and installed a different but original untouched HDD and rebooted then got the error 06 again.

I removed the HDD mentioned above and reinstalled the original (the one that came in this XBox and rebooted again with my customized Slayer's again and all seemed normal again.

New Release: xISO xFER v0.9b
>> Release Notes:
Added :
* For those not running on default port 21 on their Xbox, a port setting was added.
* Batch mode added. See readme.txt for information.
* Progressbar displaying batch progress added.

Fixed :
* People with 64Mb RAM reported out of memory errors still occuring. Changed some code in the extraction routines. Report if they still occur in v0.9b, please.
* Some messages was displayed without any actual message text. This has been corrected in v0.9b. Compare your language file with the translation file located at the xISO xFER page.
* Label displaying how many files left to extract.
* Messagebox pops up saying that the xISO isn't created according to GDF format, instead of just keep on counting the 'infinite files'. Also, those xISO's that this bug appeared in, does not occur when running v0.9b. Knock on wood... If this is displayed, then the xISO is *not* compatible with xISO xFER. Either re-image it or use another ISO tool to extract it.
* 'Extract' button caption changed.

Sony responds to Xbox Live boasts
>> From theregister.co.uk:
Sony has greeted Microsoft's announcement this week that Xbox Live now has 350,000 users with scorn. It has issued a counter-statement claiming sales of over 600,000 PS2 network adapters.

Sony may have remained aloof throughout Microsoft and Nintendo's ridiculous spat over second place in the console race earlier this year, but it seems that online gaming is a more sensitive point with the market leader, and Microsoft's triumphant announcement has raised hackles in Tokyo and kicked off a round of "mine's bigger than yours" press releases.

Xbox Linux ask EU Antitrust commission to look at Xbox PC
>> Xbox-Linux send a fax to the EU Antitrust authorities complaining about Microsoft's monopolistic behaviour with their Xbox PC device.

Here's an extract:
We have read recently that your commission is looking closely at anticompetitive actions undertaken by Microsoft Corp., in the light of the recent failure of Antitrust authorities in the US to take any effective action.

Our particular interest is in the Xbox PC device which Microsoft Corp. manufacture and reportedly sell at a loss (ie, 'dump'), cross-subsidised by the money they make from the OS monopoly.

We have written to Microsoft Corp. three times now (see http://xbox-linux.sf.net/redirect/letter for example) asking for their cooperation in allowing Xbox Linux to work on a unmodified Xbox, which they can do by appending a crypto-graphic signature known only to them. We have received no reply at all, yet we saw over 1,000 hits on our website from the microsoft.com domain in the few days after releasing the letter linked to above.

What is prompting us to write today is that Microsoft are now using the DMCA in the US against suppliers of modchips in the US. We are very concerned that despite our Operating System having no copyright issues, since the software is GPLd and no Microsoft Corp. software is required, our users will find it impossible to execute Xbox Linux because Microsoft is trying to chill or destroy the market for the modchips which their protection has made necessary before our software will run. (Note that these protection measures no not merely protect Microsoft-copyrighted content, but instead exclude all non-Microsoft approved software, including Linux, from running on the device at all.)

We are also concerned that when the EUCD is ratified in Germany and the United Kingdom, where most of our work is carried out, that Microsoft Corp. will attempt to use the same tactics against our competing Operating System for the Xbox PC in an attempt to squash our project and attack the programmers involved personally through the EUCD.

We realize that your area of concern is with Antitrust, we therefore request that you examine the situation of this 'Microsoft-only' Xbox PC and the actions taken by Microsoft Corp. in trying to ensure that there can be no independent competition in Operating Systems or Application programs on this PC platform.
Work In Progress: xISO xFER v0.9b
>> From limit.agent55.com/xFER/:
Worked hard on the batchtransfer feature, and finally got a breakthrough. It actually extracts and transfers the files correctly after a lot of hassle. Only tested on a regular FTP server, not Evo-X. Yet.
In other words, it is looking good.

Will try to add xbFileZilla support and implement a 'safe-mode' batchtransfer mode to xbFileZilla, so xISO xFER has certain restrictions while xFERRiNG your xISO to your Xbox. Don't know if user restrictions can be set in either Evo-X or neXgen. If you do, drop me a mail!

Xbox v1.2 : more changes ...
>> T-man send us alot of pictures of his Xbox v1.2.
Beside the changes in the "d0" area and the new TSOP (2Mbit instead of 8Mbit) , there are some other changes.

- The power connector now looks like a standard PC ATX model.

- It's not just the "d0" aera where the layout changed , alot of stuff moved - as example the bottom left of the board.

For all differences and a picture of the whole board you can check out the updated Xbox Version Detection Guide here.

At this moment we can not confirm yet if this is just a layout change to make production cheaper and block the nosolder pogo-pins or if this new board has also a new security scheme.

Thanks goes to T-man for sending us pictures of his v1.2 xbox!

Breaking into Microsoft's Xbox is a game for hackers
>> Here are a few parts of the article posted by nypost.com:
"It's worth everyone's time to hack into [the Xbox]," said Andrew Huang, a partner with Xenatera Partners, a security and design firm in San Diego, Calif. "From a hacker's standpoint, some see it as a possible PC, and others as a moneymaker if they're a pirate."
Which is why Microsoft has started ramping up its online enforcement team - trying to stop those who want to mess with its property.
"We're very concerned about piracy," said Tim Cranton, senior corporate attorney for Microsoft's antipiracy enforcement group. "The trend we see is a shift toward Internet piracy, which can grow substantially because of the ease and the relative anonymity of the user."
Script kiddies, so-called inexperienced hackers, who buy a pre-made chip that can turn their $200 Xbox into cheap Linux-running computers, are not on the first line of Microsoft's radar.
But content pirates, who sell or distribute copies of Microsoft's games, or those who offer computer chips with altered Microsoft code that allow the games to be played, are a worry.
For the most part, however, Microsoft has not pursued litigation of the single home hacker

In any case it's not a concern for Huang, who has no plans to alter an Xbox he keeps around.
He used it to research hacking, and wrote a soon-to-be-published book on the subject while a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"I personally don't like the Xbox for almost anything," Huang said. "It's too big, it's ugly and it consumes too much power."

v1.1 bioses/modchips working on Xbox v1.2 *updated* ?
>> L33 posted in this thread on our forums that he managed to succesfully boot a v1.2 xbox with an X2L modchip.
That would means that the only change is the bios size and the "d0" location and that all modchips working on v1.1 will work fine on this board too. Ofcourse the pogo-pin adaptors will have to be redesigned - but installing with headerpin or wires should be no problem.
We're still waiting for more information , before confirming anything thought.

*update* We're not really sure L33's xbox is a real v1.2 , it might just be a v1.1 ... We are waiting for pictures of his xbox' "d0" area to find out.

Thanks goes to Cheerio for the link.

alright, just a small note to everyone. Ive wrapped up savestates - it works exactly the same way as xSnes9x - with the same user interface and 5 savestates per rom.

So on that note we are real close to getting b3 out the door and into your hands - we are talking days rather than weeks.

theres a few last minute tweaks to be done and some overall testing but thats it. We cant see any showstoppers that will delay us anymore so its almost b3 time.

New Xbox out there : Xbox v1.2 ? *update2*
>> T-Man posted pictures of an apparently new xbox motherboard on the Xecuter forums.

The Xbox Specifications are:
region: NTSC/USA
k: 1.00.5101.01
d: 1.00.4920.01
mfg: 12-11-2002

Here's a picture of the "d0" area , which looks really different then on xbox v1.0/1.1.

"d0" doesn't seem to be at the same place on this new board. We have no idea if it works if the "d0" at the back of the motherboard is used (or the d0 directly on the bioschip).
It might be a real big design change , or maybe just a small redesign to stop the nosolder-modchips.

Thanks goes to iMURDERER for sending us this link.

update: Also note that the onboard bioschip is a 2Mbit windbond (256k) , no 8Mbit (1024k) like on Xbox V1.0/1.1. This new chip has only 32pins , the old one 40pins ... so that must be the reason why "d0" moved.
At this moment we have no idea if something else changed (nvidia chip , ...).
We'll post more info when we have it.

Thanks goes to Cyphex for the tip.

*update2* : Althought we don't know yet if the changes on the protection scheme are big , we decided to give this new board a name before the confusion starts again : Xbox v1.2.
v2.0 is reserved for what MS will show at E3 :)
