Ballmer: 'We'll support Blu-ray'
>> Yesterday we got Sony saying they were talking with Microsoft to bring Blu-ray to the Xbox360 followed Microsoft's quickly denying there are plans to introduce a Blu-ray player for the 360. Today Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer admitted that the company is working on ways to support Blu-ray, altho he didn't specify the 360 just yet:
"We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on," said Ballmer at the Mix08 conference.

"Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense," he said.

Bungie Unscrews Previously Screwed Gamer: Halo3 Swag Bag
>> From hawtymcbloggy.com:
Despite the fact that Bungie had absolutely nothing to do with what happened, they wanted to help make things right with Nathaniel. A large box packed full of Halo swag arrived on Nathaniel's doorstep yesterday afternoon. It took Bungie six days total to gather numerous goodies, pack them up, ship it off, and have it arrive at his house. The quickness in which they responded is absolutely astounding. Bungie goes above and beyond with their fans each and every day, but this time they truly outdid themselves.
Xbox-Scene

Unfortunately there is not much of a Microsoft update at this time. John Porcaro (a marketing manager at Microsoft) contacted Nathaniel last Friday after Nathaniel's previous attempts at correspondence went unanswered and had this to say, "We're gamers ourselves, and we're all pretty shocked that something like this happened... Apparently the consoles go through a wash-down process before they're shipped back. You would think that someone would see the case and realize that it would be best to leave it be." While they are working on rectifying the situation, Nathaniel has not heard back from them minus a few emails from M3 Sweat (Chief of Staff of the Windows Core Operating System Division) requesting more information. Microsoft's closing sentiments were, "We're really sorry this happened. There's no way to replace what you had exactly, but we're going to try to get you something similar, if not even more awesome."

Rumor: 60GB Xbox WILL Replace 20GB Model
>> From trustedreviews.com:
I have once again have attained from a rock solid source that Microsoft WILL be replacing the 20GB hard drive on the standard Xbox 360 with a larger 60GB version. Dates are not nailed down, but my source says Microsoft wants it done and dusted before the end of its financial year which translates as our Q2.

At this stage how all these moves will affect the Arcade is unknown. A price cut is widely rumoured to be coming this month but - at least for now - it is unlikely to also be the beneficiary of a hand-me-down 20GB hard drive.

GamerScoreBlog On Achievement Points
>> From johnporcaro on gamerscoreblog.com (Microsoft's Xbox PR Blog):
For those of you that skim the blog, skip the podcast, and ignore the comments, there's an interesting discussion going on stemming from a discussion we had in this week's podcast.

* What kind of impact has the pursuit of Xbox 360 Achievements had on your gameplay?
* The four of us (Chris, Sara, Nelson, and I) agree that Achievements have had an impact, and that they make the games we're playing more enjoyable. There's something very rewarding about the small "pat on the back" you get when you finish a level or collect an item or do something particularly challenging. There's also a strong social component to Achievements, because individual Achievements can be viewed by your friends, and compared game by game. It gives you something to talk about with other gamers ("I finally got Pacifism on Geometry Wars!"), and comparing your Gamerscore with friends can create a fun rivalry.

* Are there games you play solely to get Gamerscore points?
* One side-effect of the rivalry among friends is that some people will play a game they might not otherwise solely to earn Achievement points. I don't think the developers of games mind it when a customer buys/borrows/rents a game to do that--it's another way to get customers to become interested in a purchase. In the podcast, we discuss the race between Sara and me (she's 1000 points ahead now!), and that both of us have played games solely for points, and I pointed out that I actually enjoyed not only the race for the points (our own "meta-game"), but I enjoyed playing games like Harry Potter. Heck, I played Avatar for an hour or two even after I earned all 1,000 points...
Nelson pointed out that being in last place by such a wide margin (neener neener neener) has caused him to lose interest--for now--in the "Gamerscore race," at least among the five of us.

* What games do you continue to play knowing you won't get any more Achievements?
* We all have games we love, and play knowing that we probably won't be getting any Achievements anytime soon. For me, it's Lumines Live or Puzzle Quest. For Chris, it was Gears of War. All of us agree that a good game is a good game, and we all enjoy playing regardless of points we'll earn along the way.
We also discussed that it's subtly disappointing to finish a level and not get even a small Achievement, or to finish defeating the last boss, only to get 10 points for the effort. We're all salivating, waiting for the Pavlovian bell, but we'll keep playing great games anyway.

* What do you consider a "good" Gamerscore? Are YOU a real "gamer?"
* I think anything over 3,000-4,000 is worthy of praise, and anyone in the 10K range is definitely someone who plays a lot of videogames. Some others might think that's pathetic. And I'm certain that there are real "gamers" who have a score under 1,000. Maybe they really only like one game (or game type), maybe they spend a lot of time offline, maybe all their game time is being taken up by World of Warcraft. Or maybe they're still enjoying playing on the original Xbox.

Sony, Microsoft discuss Blu-ray for Xbox 360 *Update: MS Denies*
>> From ft.com:
Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360, according to a senior executive.

After Sony's victory last month in the high-definition DVD format war, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said the two sides were now talking about Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.

A Blu-ray drive in a 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with the PS3, but it would also mean extra revenues for Sony's electronics division. It would also add further cost to the 360, meaning a premium edition of the console could be necessary.

A Blu-ray drive could be incorporated in its top-of-the-range Elite Xbox, or Microsoft could again offer a drive as a plug-in peripheral.
*Update* From next-gen.biz:
But a Microsoft rep said in a phone interview with Next-Gen that that is "not at all" the case, and Microsoft will "remain focused on the games" for the console, not its movie playback capabilities.
"There are no plans to introduce Blu-ray," said the spokesperson.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator - Now Free
>> From Amy Dullard's Blog (program manager at Microsoft):
The Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator is now available as a free download on Xbox Live Marketplace when you request a token at here.

Why is it free now?
This decision was made in light of Toshiba's recent announcement that they are discontinuing their HD DVD business. The reasons for offering the emulator for free are two-fold.
Microsoft is committed to interactivity and giving content authors the ability to create more compelling entertainment experiences. The specification for HDi was developed with significant input from studios like Warner Bros. and Disney based on scenarios they desired in the next generation format. Offering the emulator for free allows a greater audience to experiment with interactivity with little to no cost.
Second, the emulator beta program had approximately 80 participants across the industry who relied on the emulator for testing HDi content. Continued access to the emulator will assist those post houses and developers in completing their outstanding HD DVD projects.

What can I do with this?
The Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator allows you to run complete HD DVD projects - video, audio, and advanced interactivity - on your Xbox 360 from an external USB drive or networked PC. If you're interested in learning more about HDi and how to create your first HDi application, start in the April 2007 section of this blog and work your way forward.
If you're interested in a tool for muxing video to test on the emulator, be sure to check out NetBlender's DoStudio MX. They also have a demo project that you can run on the emulator.
Note that you do not need to have video in your project, though. Your playlist may contain titles without PrimaryAudioVideoClip(s).
Once you have your project looking just the way you want, you can burn it to a DVD-9 and share it. More info on burning DVD-9s can be found here. FYI, I use a Pioneer DVD burner, Gear Pro Professional software, and Verbatim discs.

Microsoft responds to Latest 360 vs PS3 Multi-Platform Comparison
>> From gamepro.com:
In rebuttal to a GamePro editorial suggesting that PS3 port quality is on the rise, Microsoft marketing director Albert Penello says the Xbox 360 still has "the best games," especially when considering the addictive nature of Achievement points.

"For multiplatform console owners, Achievements and Gamerscore have to be listed as an influencing factor to purchase the Xbox 360 version," said Penello in an email to GamePro on Tuesday. "Their success and popularity is undeniable."
"We have to disagree with your conclusion that the trend of Xbox 360 versions of games being best is changing, especially when you look at the entire catalog of multiplatform titles available," added Penello. "The cold, hard truth is that Xbox 360 has the best games - and industry reviewers and consumers agree."

CeBIT 2008: Lian Li Shows New Xbox 360 Case
>> Lian Li already showed us an early prototype Xbox360 case at CES2008, but today hexus.net reports from CeBIT 2008 about their latest Xbox360 prototype case:
Lian Li had something special under wraps here at the pre-show day at CeBIT 2008. Hidden in a cardboard box was a pre-production sample of its brand-new Xbox 360 chassis.
Made from its lush, anodised, brushed aluminium, the enclosure features enough space for all the internal components of the console along with pre-prepared water-cooling holes in the rear.
In addition, the chassis has the necessary preparation for Elite owners to transfer their hardware to, with the space for the HDMI already catered for, and the noisy cooling of the console replaced by a single, low-speed 120mm fan on the rear.

No HDD in Core 360 a 'mistake', says dev
>> From computerandvideogames.com:
The decision not to include a hard drive as standard with every 360 was a "mistake" by Microsoft, Bourne Conspiracy's lead game designer has told us.

"In retrospect I wish Microsoft had made the choice to have [mandatory] hard drives like Sony did with the PS3," he said.
"Developers certainly benefit [from a hard drive]," he went on to explain, adding: "if you have a hard drive, the whole game loads faster. Obviously you'll be facing a short install time, but the developer benefits from it and you definitely benefit from it as a player.
