Interview with Bunnie
>> Icrontic.com had an interview with Bunnie (Andrew Shane Huang).
I recently had the chance to interview the famous Xbox hacker from MIT, Andrew Shane Huang (aka "bunnie"). Andrew almost single handedly cracked the Xbox. He was the first one to dump the BIOS image from the Xbox, and continued to perform several other Xbox hacks and modifications.
This is his story....

We have no idea why they suddenly re-added the PC-bioXX some days ago and now decided to remove it again.

Modchip™ ?!
>> Our ps2 affiliate , ps2ownz.com , has a very interesting story about Paul Felber trying to TRADEMARK the word Modchip.
We are referring to a TRADEMARK filed with the United States Patent And TradeMark Office on September 23, 2002 by Paul Felber. This type of TRADEMARK is referred to as a "WORDMARK" in Legal Terms, and the word he's trying to TM is MODCHIP... a word which most shops use to identify their site with search engines and describe what they sell! :(

In closing, to prevent such a grave injustice from occurring we recommend you consult with your Legal Council and have them reference serial number 76454459 when contacting the appropriate TRADEMARK Authorities to voice their concern. When contacting them, simply remind them that the word MODCHIP is an unregisterable term and an error on their part will be made if this TRADEMARK is registered! THANKS to the individual (you know who you are) who brought this matter to our attention while there is still time to intervene.

X-ecuterII : not limited to 1 reseller
>> From x-ecuter.com :
We can confirm that Xecuter2 will not be limited to one particular seller. From past experience one reseller can never satisfy a global market. Therefore anyone who wishes to distribute the device can do so, and you the customer have the option to choose who you do business with without any kind of pressure. This will also give opportunity for various resellers to give individual deals and offers - encouraging a healthy base for competition, this can only mean cheaper prices and faster delivery times. The first feedback was given today - one of the comments being "astonishingly easy to setup, clever yet simple design for external programming & control".

xToolBox v0.1 BETA
>> xToolBox v0.1 BETA by Tritium
xToolBox is a graphical FTP client for Xbox which allows you to directly browse and copy
files and folders to and from the Xbox hard disk and to and from a remote FTP server.
v0.1 BETA - Initial release
- Browse files and folders on Xbox hard disk and DVD drive.
- Browse files and folders on remote server.
- Queuing of files.
- Transfer of files.
KNOWN ISSUES:
xToolBox issues a PORT command to the FTP server that describes which port to send the incoming
data/information. Even if the network layer gives the application a 'free' port number, the FTP
server still isn't able to send to that PORT.
If this situation occurs just try again (just try to browse a folder).
Features that may or may not be included in future releases:
- Menu (with more 'FTP client' commands)
- Help
- Skin support (if I manage to display the loaded background in a correct manner)
- Solve the PORT issue mentioned above
- Passive mode transfer
- 'Maximize' the different lists
- Improved checking on return codes
- On-screen keyboard

Microsoft: Xbox takes on pirates in China
>> It was announced some days ago that Microsoft will launch the Xbox console in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.
CommentWire.com posted more information why MS wants to launch the console in a country where piracy is over 90%
October 25, 2002 2:11 PM GMT (Datamonitor) - With software piracy endemic in southeast Asia, Microsoft's launch of its heavily subsidized Xbox console is a bold move. Although software sales and online gaming in Singapore and Taiwan should bring some returns, the real story is that Microsoft is paying heavily now, to gain a foothold in a market that will be lucrative in several years' time.

Piracy rates are 90% in South Korea and Taiwan - while high, this still means significant revenues for legitimate software. With additional online gaming revenues for Microsoft, the launch in these territories should bring in some cash - although whether it will cover costs is another question. But the piracy rate for Hong Kong and mainland China is 98% - and Internet penetration is low, so the scope for returns is near-zero. What's the story here?
Simple. Microsoft doesn't need or expect to make money on this incarnation of the Xbox. Instead, it wants to establish a strong installed base, to convince Asia-Pacific developers to create Xbox games - and then Xbox 2 games. This will allow it to build its Asian base still further, convincing more developers...

Xodus news
>> A big news update today on xodus-chip.com.
Here are some snaps :
However, despite all the reasons stated above [over 50 items on PCB] we can now say with confidence that all our initial teething problems are over and we have been able to catch up to the overwhelming demand for our product. We can safely say that our manufacturer(s) are now able to supply sufficient quantities to satisfy the current retail demand, they are now working on an overtime schedule for us, in order to build up enough stock for the wholesale requests.

With Easybuy we were able to ensure that our customers came first. They were the only major distributors large enough to handle this product, and by that we mean the only company out there willing to include an agreement for RMA (Return to Manufacturer Advice). This to us was important, as it gave us the ability to ensure every last customer was content with his/her product no matter how late it got there. The bottom line is, no matter how, when or what, we want each and every customer to be pleased with the end result. To date we have, and still will, keep a personal eye on our customers through our support@xodus-chip.com as well as monitor as much as we can on the forums. Our device is a lot more complicated and original than some people make it out to be, but we love it for its simplicity in use ?

We are currently working on a manual for our recently released Win LPC software, as well as a detailed troubleshooting guide for the programming and installation. We have completed a very unique testing bios which is 100 % legal and therefore will be hosted by us. This bios will be released with the above mentioned manual and guide in order to have a fool proof way to test your product for any manufacturing defects (on that note we cannot, and will not, entertain any request for illegal copyrighted material).

X-ecuterII update
>>
We get asked a lot what the difference is between X2 an the other mods available. We've compiled the table below (thanks to xbox-scene.com) to give you an idea of why it's the most advanced LPC tool to date. Many seem to be confused as to what the abilities of these "LPC TOOLS" are - well to be frank they do nothing without the correct software, and only one of these teams writes the software ;) They're all great designs, we're just illustrating on which areas we have improved on since our last release.
Check out the table here[x-ecuter.com].
They also posted this news:
We'd like to point out that some idiots have been posting on forums posing as one of the Xecuter team. The only forums we have posted to are Evox - the rest of our conversations are held privately. We do not wish to get dragged into some stupid argument about which mod design is best. Of course we would always argue that ours is best as we write the software, but the other designs are just as capable to run our software. Before ANYONE says otherwise our kernel will be on a 256k patch NOT a 512k patch to stop the Xodus and some others from working. So please if anyone begins to cause trouble on your forum and you wish notify us please do so. To recap you can expect first batches to be sent out next week to people who'd like to play. The design has come on leaps and bounds over the last week and we now find it to be rock solid reliable on all models tested.

New Tutorial : Lock Harddrive
>> We received a really great tutorial today :
*Locking a replacement Hard Disk for the Xbox (v0.1)
Written by -opjose
Why lock the drive?
Probably because you are a bit paranoid and believe that you MUST put the Xbox back into it’s pristine state to get XboxLive to work. You don’t really have to though.
You may also have a Matrix type Mod/Bios chip and want to utilize the dual boot function that makes your machine revert back to the original BIOS. You could merely elect to disable this function by setting the chip to “mode 2” that always keeps the flashed bios on.

Microsoft says not pulling Xbox from Australia
>> Microsoft denies news posted earlier by the Australian newspaper The Age.
LOS ANGELES, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people) has no intention of withdrawing its Xbox video game console from Australia despite reports it was considering such a move in a dispute over a copyright law, the company said on Tuesday.
Australian newspaper The Age reported last Friday that Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, angry over a court ruling that allowed an individual there to sell after-market chips that modify game consoles, had said the company would have to reconsider selling its console there.
A company spokeswoman told Reuters Ballmer's remarks were not specifically related to the Xbox, which she said Microsoft was committed to selling in Australia.

Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony Vs Fariness
>> An interesting reaction from Lenon, a resident of Australia, in reply to the following:
Microsoft may withdraw its Xbox video game console from the Australian market or seek new legal protections there as a result of a court decision that legitimizes "mod chips" for hackers, CEO Steve Ballmer said.
(from CNet)
Here is what he has to say:
The above named are currently in the process of shutting down websites dedicated to the development and expansion of gaming consoles.Rewarding governments substantial money to create legislation (in all parts of the world) dictating the congolomerate's wishes and enforcing the law to its limits.
Many people across the globe choose to duplicate or back up there investment to avoid the risk of damage beyond use.
The driver for this action is to reduce the chance of the disc becoming damaged beyond use - which is fair given the cost of owning each game is substantial(usually $99.95 for each game http://www.xbox.com/au/Games/catalog.htm). Each of the gaming houses do not want consumer's to duplicate games because it would reduce one of the many revenue stream's available. The revenue stream in question are customers who buy games more than once because the discs become damaged beyone use.
It is unfair and immoral to expect the gaming community to be restricted of simply playing a game that has been purchased off the shelf and not duplicating it or playing a game from another country such as the great America.
The fact is, all types of removable media such as video tapes, cd's, dvd's, cassette tapes, ect can be replaced with a Hard Disk Drive, who's life is far greater than the common Disc. The data signal can be sent to any form of electronic device such as your television or stereo system. We are only a small step away from our pc's becoming a "server" for the common house. We will no longer require DVD, Cassette, CD, Video players as our computers will replace these appliances and right now corporations are exploiting these products before a shift occurs. The very fact corporates chose a disc as a means to sell media illustrates they did so because it was in there interests. It would not be in there interests to sell media in the form of a hard disk simply because it will last many years longer than a disc.
Throughout the world piracy is a huge issue.
Predominantly in asian capitals the trend has spread to Western and Communist society's.
The trend has not been because there is a "criminal element" in each person but because the games are simply over-priced.
It is unfortunate piracy exists in all pockets of the world, however it is not the responsibility of the gaming community but the responsibility of enforcement agencies and companies selling games.
Enforcement agencies should be doing more to combat piracy and gaming companies should reduce games to an acceptable price.
Our society is based on democracy, freedom of choice and expression, however and alarmingly corporations are continually re-writing legislation with the government to suit there interests.
Xbox (Microsoft) are determined re-instate the amendments the ACCC reversed by threatening OUR government of withdrawal from the Australian market.
This strategy is a form of dictatorship and goes against the very foundations of our Western culture.
The time has come to return power to the consumer and tell these corporations not to interfere with Australia's legislation or politics and enter the Australian market arena if you do not want to operate fairly.
Please forward this on to all your contacts as creating awareness is the only combatant available given the media (ie radio and televeision stations and newspapers) have a direct interest promoting the "good company" image of the major gaming houses.
Sincerely,
Leon.
Very well said. I have to agree with you Lenon, companies such as Microsoft charge way too much for things. Its not too fair, and to pull the xbox from the Australian market is extremely unfiar.

More about "go live"
>> We now know that the best solution for the "go live" update problem on xbox consoles with EvoX dash installed on HD is to flash a hacked bios that boots evoxdash.xbe or yxboxdash.xbe instead of xboxdash.xbe
But you should also be aware that this "go live" update will update your xbox with USA executables (so far all games with this "go live" features are NTSC/U) ... so all people with a non-US xbox will not be able to boot their xbox without modchip (due region-check).
It will ofcourse work fine as long as your modchip is enabled (no region-check).
Thanks to everyone who mailed me this info ;)

Microsoft's Xbox was one of the most anticipated gaming consoles in history. It received enormous press throughout it's development and launch. Microsoft spent billions designing and promoting it, and they lose money on every unit sold. This was all part of Microsoft's gamble. They anticipated huge Xbox and Xbox component sales. They also got the chance to get into the living rooms of people who otherwise wouldn't have any part of Microsoft. Microsoft's gamble failed, and the Microsoft's reputation has been tainted as a result.

Solution for "go live" problem
>> Here's the mail I got from DSmooth :
As an XBox Live Beta tester, here is the full scoop about the "go live" issue being seen by people. The first XBox Live beta disc had the XBox Live Dashboard as a separate executable on the disc. With the newer beta releases, as well as beta versions of games that will support XBL, the latest software patches the xboxdash.xbe file on c:\ .
Each game you run will check your xboxdash version, and if it's not as recent as the one on that disc, it WILL PATCH IT.
Your only safe bet is to switch to a bios that boots to some other dashboard name, like yboxdash.xbe .
Currently I am running that setup. My EvolutionX dashboard is called yboxdash.xbe and my xboxdash.xbe is the original Microsoft one. I have EvoX link the "Original MS Dashboard" to xboxdash.xbe.
When I boot up with no disc in, it loads the EvoX dashboard fine.
When I run an XBL game that tries to patch the dashboard, c:\xboxdash.xbe is still the original one, so the patching is successful. Everyone should move to yboxdash.xbe based BIOS images if you plan on copying the EvolutionX dashboard to your hard drive.
So the best solution atm is to use one of those evox bios "hacks" (by Superfro) that boot yboxdash.xbe or evoxdash.xbe ... you can find them at the usual places.
If you have the BIOS RC4-key you can also modify the evox bios (2.0/2.1/2.2/2.3/2.4/2.5) yourself with fanCbox. (you can download this program from our tools section ... don't ask for the bioses or RC4-key tho)
Thanks to WildFire & DSmooth for their mail.

Unreal Championship "go live" & EvoX = broken Xbox
>> c0.zen mailed us that when you have the evox dashboard installed on your HD and you try the "go live" option in Unreal Championship , your Xbox will not boot anymore.
Apparently the "go live" function actually installs a new dashboard, makes a folder named "xboxdashdata 100271000" and "xodash", and changes the xbox NIC data in the dashboard.
Even if you boot off the disk you will not be able to connect via FTP.
How to fix it:
Install new boXplorer on a disk so that it boots to boxplorer, on the disk make a directory with the new evoX dash xbe file on it.
copy the new dash onto C: and rename.
now your xbox will boot and connect over the network again
hopes this helps many as i am sure they will click it too!

Official MS keyboard
>> A dutch Xbox site (xboxworld.nl) announced that an official keyboard has been distributed with the beta versions of PSO1&2 (Sega)!
Here's a translation (by Harm Jan) :
[OUOTE]
Microsoft did always deny that the xbox support an keybord or mouse, but it looks like that MS is dement. Gamefront reports that the Japanese Xbox Live Starters kit besides a copy of PSO 1&2 also contains an USB adapter. The con of this is that a lot op people(PS2 lovers ;) ) again suggest that the xbox is nothing but a PC, but the other side is that the majority of the people know better and are glad to have a keybord to use with Phantasy Star Online.

X-ecuterII news
>> Alot of news today from Team X-ecuter.
In short :
X-ecuter now has working C-prototypes (on both v1 & v1.1 xbox) and will send out samples soon.
It can be flashed with the current version of EvoX , but there will probably be a new version where you will be able to select which part you want to flash. (4 x 256k ROMS / 1 x 512k ROM / 1 x 1MB ROM).
The standard modchip will have 10 easy wires , but you will probably be able to buy an LPC Socket adaptor or even an Pogo Pins (like Xodus) adaptor.
The modchip will be sold WITHOUT bios , and they are also working on a Win32 program to flash the modchip from your PC with the different options (4 x 256k , 1 x 512k / 1 x 1MB).
Read the full information under this (from x-ecuter.com) :
Please see pictures below to illustrate 100% success in flashing design C with evox (Tested on both v1 and v1.1 Xbox consoles with Xecuter 1(4034) and Xecuter2(4817) kernels). We'd like to point out that even though we think EvolutionX flash update tool is excellent, it is also quite restricted. The design C has several different "BANKS" to store your bios images (e.g 4 x different 256k kernels), but evox erases the complete rom and then flashes with whatever rom you choose. Now you could compile your 1MB file with 4 x 256k images and then its a simple switch process to select which bank to boot from, but we find this can be improved by actually selecting which bank you want to erase/program with just the 256k file that you wish to use. We've discussed this with evox and we believe that they will add support for this new feature as well as Xecuter coding their own tool. On a further note we would like to pass on our good wishes to SiliconICE and the crew at xboxhacker.net - we hope you are back up and running as soon as possible.

We'd just like to confirm that design C prototype is completed and we will be handing out free samples to various parties for a complete unbiased review. We will welcome recommendations for design changes to make sure that everything has been considered with the end user in mind. The first design change was to have the connectors as optional adapters. You have to bear in mind most users of a mod are more than competent enough to solder 10 easy wires, so why should they be punished with a $10-$15 price hike for pogo pins just to cater for those that cannot or do not wish to solder? Therefore the current design is based around an "adapter" principal. Adapter1 = 10 wires, Adapter2 = LPC Socket, Adapter3 = Pogo Pins. The mod will be supplied with adapter1 at a much cheaper cost than any other mod. Adapters 2 and 3 will be supplied separately for an extra cost - with the most expensive choice still being cheaper than any other mod available! The adapter principal is just one of many ideas we have come up with to cater for everyone who wishes to use this product - from beginners to advanced modders. Keep those email suggestions coming - all ideas are welcome to make this the best design possible.
Please note: "Design C" is a product that will have no bios or kernel included. We feel that even though hacking is fun, anyone wishing to supply these products must be able to do so without risking themselves due to despicable anti-consumer laws which do not allow you to IMPROVE a piece of hardware that you have paid good money for.

We've been a little busy today so here's another update. We've completed our own tool for flashing the "Design C" mod. Right now its command line, slow, limited features, but we'll be adding features, performance improvements and GUI in the next few days. See below for a screen snapshot of the flashing / boot process (Note: you may be interested in knowing that the "flashx 0" command boots the mod in 1MB mode - as you can see controlled by the PC and not by setting jumpers - which is also a feature of course - we just thought it was a nice touch for those devvers who like that kind of thing).
