Kawa-X
>> From the readme:
Kawa-X is the XBox port of a Windows emulator I made some time ago named
Kawaks. It allows to play titles from the Capcom CPS1, CPS2 and SNK NeoGeo library. Pretty much all games are supported, even these 90mb monsters that would normally not fit into the XBox's limited 64mb RAM. (This emu includes a significant amount of black magic :P) For the more recent encrypted NeoGeo games, though, only the decrypted form is supported (64Mb of RAM won't allow to do the decryption). Kawaks (PC version) can produce decrypted sets, if you only have encrypted versions...
See the included list of supported titles for more info...

There's the following goodies waiting inside :
- CPS1, CPS2, NeoGeo support (doh)
- Plenty of nice eye candy video filters (more about that later)
- Redefinable controls (including handy macros like keys to do 3 punches, etc)
- Can save screenshots
- Savestates (8 slots per game)
- You can play NeoGeo games either in arcade mode or in console mode
- You can switch region (language settings) for every supported CPS2 game.
For example, that means you can play the normally japanese only Mighty Pang in english if you want...
Looks like this is the first cat out of the bag with Virtual Memory handling. Before anyone asks "WHY DOESNT "insert emulator here" DO THAT?" Give it time, and im sure they will have the same exact process..things are always in the works ; )

AllXBoxSkins.com back online
>> From MomDad on allxboxskins.com:
Our apologies and thanks to our users for your patience during our past few days of downtime.
As many of you may, or may not be aware, AllXBoxSkins.com was "hacked" a few days ago. We've recovered from the ordeal, and have tightened up security on our servers.
The individual in question managed to wipe out a portion of our db, and some of our www files. The www files weren't a problem since we had a very recent backup, but we had been a bit lax on the db side.
What's been lost are the titles, names, descriptions, download #'s, votes and comments for a number of skins, but fortunately, however, we still have all the skins! (Which is what really matters anyway, right!? :)
We've added back in all the skins, but you'll notice that many of them are now defaulted to the name of the archive, with no additional info. The info can, however, be rebuilt over time. Our apologies to any users whose skins have been affected.
There's a chance that we may be able to retrieve a 2-week-ago backup of our db from our Datacenter, and if that's the case, we'll re-integrate that with all the new skins since the incident, and have everything back as it was.
As a side-note -- we're cruising *very* close to breaking the momentous 1,000 skins mark! Keep 'em coming, and thanks for making us the #1 biggest and best XBox skins site in existence!

Forbes Xbox/PS2 article
>> Forbes posted a very interesting article about Xbox and PS2 online facts and ambitions:
Microsoft's videogames have had more fits than starts. Its console, the two-year-old Xbox, loses something like $100 per unit sold, or a billion dollars a year. Xbox had a disastrous launch in Japan and still runs far behind Sony's PlayStation 2 in worldwide sales. But the game's not over. Witness the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, the gaming industry's annual confab in May. For the goateed and backpack-toting attendees, E3 is a big, honking sneak peek at the next killer games, and Microsoft had the best of them all: Halo 2, the sequel to its 2001 sci-fi action masterpiece. People waited hours in line just to see the eight-minute demonstration. "It's one of our most ambitious projects," says Robert (Robbie) Bach, the Microsoft senior vice president in charge of Xbox. "It's a title that will sell anytime, anyplace."
But it will play only on Xbox. And if you want to blast away online with far-flung friends you have to pay $50 a year to subscribe to Microsoft's new gaming network, Xbox Live. Halo is just the first of several new Xbox and Xbox Live exclusives, including sure hits such as Doom 3, Project Gotham Racing 2 and Counter-Strike. All of them, Bach says, play better online.

"This generation we were statistically out of the playoffs before we even laced up our shoes," concedes J Allard, vice president in charge of Xbox Live. "Next season, there won't be an 18-month head start. We'll be neck and neck right out of the gate, and Xbox Live will give us a huge online head start."

The Xbox Live network launched in November and passed the 500,000 subscriber mark in seven months, beating, by 80,000, the number of people registered to play PlayStation 2 games online, despite the fact that Microsoft has sold only 9.4 million Xboxes to Sony's 51 million PlayStations. Nintendo, with 9.6 million GameCubes sold, has limited online ambitions.

Microsoft has a habit of herding customers into its own technology corrals. Xbox Live is no exception, with Microsoft reaping nearly all of the financial benefits and exerting total control over the game network. PlayStation throws the gate open to allow any game developer to run its own player network. In May Electronic Arts, the world's biggest game publisher, shunned Microsoft and announced that through March 2004 its bestselling sports games will be playable online only with Sony.

Microsoft's Patent Problem
>> File this under Better Late than Never Dept. :)

"Last month, when Microsoft announced its bellwether decision to award employees restricted stock instead of options, it also made news in a federal courtroom—the kind of news you keep quiet about.

Microsoft suffered utter defeat at a crucial pretrial hearing in what appears to be the highest-stakes patent litigation ever—one in which a tiny company called InterTrust Technologies claims that 85% of Microsoft's entire product line infringes its digital security patents... "

XSavSig 0.05
>> Whats New/Fixed:
* Calculates "normal" game save signatures. That is, signatures which were generated using the normal, non-no-roam signature calculation algorithm (HMAC-SHA1).
* Calculates "no-roam" game save signatures. That is, signatures which were generated such that the data would only be valid on the original XBox that it was saved on (uses the XBox's unique hard drive key).
* Calculates many secondary "custom" signatures and CRCs. That is, signatures and CRCs in which the manufacturer of the game used their own custom algorithms to generate secondary signatures, CRCs, etc.
* Supports game saves which use multiple signatures.
* Supports game saves which store their signatures in a separate file from their data.
* Uses INI files for maximum flexability.

OzXBios v2.12dev
>> OzXChip releases a cromwell 'flashbios' similar to the Xodus and Xecuter one. This one is based on the newer v2.12dev cromwell release though.

From the readme:
OzXBios (Cromwell) is a customized version of the Cromwell bios for distribution with the OzXChip modchip, it has been changed to incorporate a modchip flashing feature that requires a CD with BIOS.BIN to be inserted in the XBox's DVD-Rom drive.
Once a CD is inserted into the drive the bios looks for a BIOS.BIN file and if it is found it will flash this onto the modchip (provided it has flash support in the bios for the modchip type), if the BIOS.BIN file is not found (or is the wrong size) the bios will attempt to boot Linux off the CD.

Please note : This latest version is based on a much more stable version of Cromwell and now features progress bars too.
The sources used to create OzXBios 2.12dev have been submitted to the XBox Linux Project for inclusion in the Cromwell CVS.

Connect4 v1.1
>> From the readme:
Added network support!!
You can now play connect4 over the internet.
One player must host then the other player can join.
The host must have some sort of TCP port farwarding on the router/PC. So the Client can connect to your Xbox.
It is using blocking winsocks. This makes the game look frozen when it isn't your move. Also when the player disconnects from the game. You will have to reboot your Xbox as it will just sit there waiting for the next move. I tried to to stop this but couldn't.
This is my first winsock/internet project and it was fun so expect more of the same. I have to look into non-blocking socks as I think is sux a bit with it freezing all the time.

In this image you will see the DVD dongle in the middle of the unit. This is still being debated on it's location. I'm having some trouble desciding were the expansion bay will be. So it currently isn't shown in this image.
A 3D CAD version is in the works what will allow me to have more detail and keep the parts to scale and will alow for virtual fitting of the components.
In adition a too scale version of the XBox housing will be released in DWG format once completed.

XBMP asking help for SVCD/VCD Menu
>> From Gamester17:
This is a plead to all you developers and coders out there, please help add Video CD (SVCD/VCD) menu support to Xbox Media Player. I'm making this public feature request as many, including myself feel that this is a important and needed feature but unfortunate the official XBMP development team does not have the time to code this themselves right now or anytime soon as other things take priority. I'm not a programmer myself but I was thinking and hopping that it would be possible for someone to port xine's VCDlib to Xbox and then integrate that into the XBMP GUI and/or XBMP's MPlayer core. If you are up for this challenge and/or like to do this or help out (programming/technical only, not testing) then please join the forum discussion on the topic.
If you are a developer and want to help XBMP, go to this thread (XBMP forum - serious development/code/technical discussion only)

'BigFonts' 22 July update
>> From the readme (22July version):
It has come to my attention that a wrong installation (like forgetting to rename the original fonts or removing other hacks) can have strange impact.
The testbox (that was the reason why I took down the fonts) booted flawlessly into linux without a single additional reboot. But when the clock died it only looped and looped. It turned out that this was only caused by a broken installation. (this is the reason why 21th July Fonts were taken down, the 20th are still dangerous for a lot of people)

So before people start saying: bigfonts doesnt fix shit for me, or bigfonts has the eject problem, which reloaded had not, I advise you to check your installation. Neither bigfonts nor reloaded have code in it to fix the eject problem. The eject problem has nothing to do with the fonts, but with some flag in the XBE header (which states if the file may eject or not) and the BIOS. If the BIOS is not correctly patched (neither bigfonts nor reloaded try to do this) reset on eject is enabled if the XBE header of the files you execute doesnt switch it off.

And NO. There is no solution for the DVD remote problem. The box will crash if you boot with a video DVD in the drive (or reboot). This cannot be fixed with the way the hack works (unless we find...). But this is no problem because you can wait until your (patched) msdashboard is loaded and insert the DVD at this time.

Ohh and before I forget it: To correctly install this copy ernie.xtf and bert.xtf into your fonts directory and tripple(!) check that they are the ONLY .XTF files within that directory. Every additional .XTF will make the hack unstable. (Other files without a .XTF extension are no problem)

Wishi about console modding/development in Edge
>> We got this mail from Wishi from http://www.xfactordev.net:
I was quoted in Edge (probably the best UK magazine for games) about console modding/development, specifically the Xbox scene. The guy asked me specific questions and I gave the answer.

I want to make it absolutely clear that these are only my opinions and I don't try to speak for the whole scene, I was just giving him answers that are my views.

How to run homebrew code using the ST.DB (audio) exploit
>> From 'Adso58' on forums.xbox-scene.com:
I managed to get the audio exploit to run whatever .xbe, I explain it:
First you must install the exploit without any change, insert a Audio CD, execute linux.xbe, etc.
Now, you need to transfer the ST.DB that you have copied to the XBox before, to the PC (the file should have changed).
With this file, replace the following bytes (starting at position 0xFF):
"05 14 00 00 00 89 85 72 01 00 00"
with these
"81 76 FF 14 01 00 10 90 90 90 90"
Copy this modified file to the XBox (yes, again), and overwrite the old file.
Now, you can sign any .xbe with the habibi key using "xbedump file.xbe -habibi" and copy out.xbe as linux.xbe in E: and the .xbe will run.
And I must recognize that the guy that made the audio exploit is very clever, he put some nice protections to avoid running other .xbe than linux.xbe
This method was tested on a XBox v1.0, with kernel 4034 and dashboard 4920, I don't know if it will work in other XBoxes
After this info was released, "AUDIO_EXPLOIT_PLUS_PHOENIX_BIOS_LOADER" has been released on the 'usual sources'. It contains the all the files needed and correctly signed to boot the Pheonix loader with the audio exploit (alias st.db dashboard exploit).

Also 21 July 'BigFonts' has dead clocks problems
>> From readme (2nd 21 July release):
The bigfonts where taken down until tommorow. They have to be rechecked with dead clocks.
Do not unplug your box until the problem is solved.
If you have the reboot loop you can try one thing... It works on some boxes...
When the start of the clock animation is shown press the eject button and keep it pressed. I was able to get out of the reject loop with this trick. But BEWARE. This could be dangerous cause the first time I did it something strange happened to my box (eeprom problems).
'BigFonts' are experimental font files (released as test/beta on irc and forums) based on the original xtf files released by free-x. They are the sum of several ideas to make the exploit better. (led fix and they are working on the clock problem)

Xbox-Linux full installer with Mech Assault gamesave hack
>> From zeus at maxconsole:
News from Xbox-Linux circles are hearing of a new Mech Assault hack that has installer, uninstaller and integrates into the Microsoft dashboard.
But there is more the hack integrated the font hack faultlessly and has clock fix protection inbuilt.
This savegame exploit is only part of it, it installs a minilinux to the hard drive.
When you boot up the dashboard with the hack installed, it works normally (except taking longer to boot) except that the XBOX LIVE menu option is replaced with LINUX.
Choosing restore dashboard will run dashupdate.xbe without any hacks (other than to delete the linux hacks).
It also patches the microsoft dash and renames the original fonts so the dash still works.
Fully Xbox-Live compatible and games are playable just as normal.

just to clear up a mistake in the original post as it was only hot off the presse:
"maxconsole is slightly wrong
it doesn't really have the clock fix
basically, if the clock is dead, the dashboard's own clock function will bring up the usual screen
there are some unsolvable problems
when the source is GPL maybe someone can fix them
if you boot the system with a DVD video inserted from the start, it won't work properly
if you have no dongle, it will go into a reset loop
if you have a dongle, the DVD will play, but the "Display" button will crash the xbox because it tries to display a font
my code never executes
so i couldn't figure them out
there is a simple way to handle this
if you want to play DVDs, wait until the dashboard has fully loaded before inserting it
since my code will have control, it will play DVDs properly.
before inserting the disk i mean.
another case that is crashy is if you try to boot an xbox game from an invalid region
but again, waiting until my code has control will work (IE, display the proper error)
i want to release the source as soon as i can safely because there are some problems i know about that i'd like fixed
but as it stands now, there seems to be no bugs that cause a fatal problem, such as an infinite reset loop without a disk inserted
i want to test it on a lot of systems so that we know we won't destroy people's xbox's
that's about it"
We also found pictures of this (Team Xbox-Linux showed this new install method at LinuxTag 2003). Pictures by Gerhard.

More news about Jihad project
>> For those who forgot about this great project:
Jihad is an arcade/adventure game. The game is designed to be a free, fun, multiplayer homebrew game for everyone to enjoy.
Jihad involves two teams... namely Team Collective and Team Jihad.
The two teams battle it out in an arcade-style tank simulation with all the usual goodies such as weapon power-ups, mutual enemies, and even small quests.
Multiplayer will support local play. In addition, I will be creating a PC-based server and an authorative server list to create an XBox Live-style community for the game... only free.

News Update:
Well things are coming along pretty well, albeit not as quickly as I'd hoped. There is alot of bitch-work along with developing an engine from scratch. Editors, file formats, tools, etc. I've been working on that junk for the last month or so. Additionally, the past several weeks have been extremely hectic... e.g. 60 hrs/week. This will change soon, giving me much more time to do the things I enjoy (i.e. jihad). There are short vids available on the right side of this page. Unfortunately, that's all I can provide at this time.

It's coming soon!

Bug in 'BigFonts' version of 20 July
>> 'BigFonts' are experimental font files (released as test/beta on irc and forums) based on the original xtf files released by free-x. They are the sum of several ideas to make the exploit better.

XBMP breaks its 2GB ISO9660 limitation!
>> From Gamester17:
Finally, thanks to [SNK], the one thing that most people been annoyed with has been solved and integrated into XBMP's CVS (source code). The fix code submitted here enables Xbox Media Player to read and play media files written after the first 2GB on a ISO 9669 formatted DVD's. This was previously one of the very few limitations of XBMP as you can see here with this quote from our FAQ's:

"Q: Why can't XBMP read/play files from ISO DVD-R/RW media after 2GB written on media?
A: This is due to a XBMP limitation reading ISO 9660 (the code was designed for CD-R/RW)."
