Gentoox is one year old
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
You might have guessed by now... Gentoox is a year old today! The past 12 months have seen Gentoox mature into a solid Linux distribution for the Xbox, my only regret is that I didn't release a new version before this momentous occasion! However, it will come. Looking back, I never expected Gentoox to grow into what it has today. It originally started off as something to do to relieve boredom whilst I was ill and off school. Eerily, I was sick again this past week! Although I was too ill to do any work on Gentoox this time :P. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed looking around at the old site and old patch files and realise just how much has changed since back in the beginning!
One more thing, if you want to look around the limited source files I had, just go to http://gentoox.shallax.com/oldtoox and click around!
Happy BDay to Gentoox!. Go check gentoox.shallax.com ;)

Project Jihad update
>> An update from earlier this month I missed. From theunprofessional.com:
Work is still progressing on Jihad. Some better tools are underway as well. Multiplayer was put temporarily on hold for improvements to the level design mechanism to better support large terrain, and most importantly, optimize the physics. With too many tanks, things were slowing down a bit as a result of vehicle physics (and the terrain). Always work being done! Don't forget me! :)
Jihad is an arcade/adventure game that represents my first attempt at a complete Xbox title. The game is designed to be a free, fun, multiplayer homebrew game for everyone to enjoy.

XIR Easy Kit review
>> Official XIR website: http://www.cheaplpc.com/XIR/
What's the XIR Easy Kit? The XIR Easy Kit will allow you to turn on and off your xbox with a remote control. The 'Easy Kit' I tested is fully solderless (unless you want to add optional 'd0'/modchip control), the 'Pro Kit' requires some easy soldering and is also a bit cheaper.
The XIR Easy Kit: More pictures: picture1, picture2 The chip is on a PCB with 4 connectors. One goes to the IR-receiver (included with the kit ... the XIR does not use the Xbox dongle), another one is for power (2 wires: 3.3v, 3.3v STB) and the last two are to connect the xbox 'power/reset-button-cable'. There's also a small led on the PCB for easier installation (check that PCB gets power).
Installation The installation is very easy. You get a short printed manual with the XIR or you can also see it online (installation guides). All you need with the 'Easy Kit' is a torxdriver to open up your xbox. Once your Xbox is open you have to: * insert the 2 power wires in the Xbox powersupply connector on the motherboard (no soldering) * Disconnect the 'power/eject-button-wires' (yellow) coming from the xbox front panel to the xbox motherboard , connect it to the XIR PCB and connect the red wires from the XIR PCB to the Xbox motherboard. * Optionally you can connect 'D0' with the XIR (requires soldering) to allow to turn on your xbox with modchip enabled or disabled. After that's done it's only a matter of putting the XIR PCB and IR receiver on the right place so you can close back your Xbox.
Features Once installed you can turn off and on your xbox with the Xbox remote. It is possible that it works with some other remotes too, but there's no list for this - it's made to work with the Xbox remote and it works perfectly with it. To turn off your xbox you have to press the '0' Button. To turn on your xbox you have the press the Select or Display Button. (if you soldered the optional wire with 'D0' the Select button turns on your xbox with modchip disabled and 'Display' with modchip enabled).
Conclusion With homebrew software it became already possible to do everything from distance with the controller and/or remote (boot games and utils from HD, launch music/movies with XBMC). The only thing left you had to stand up and walk to your xbox was to turn on your xbox (turn off is possible via software solutions) and that's what this extra small piece of hardware will allow you to do. If your games are all on the Xbox HD this basicly allows you to hide your xbox somewhere far away under, above or behind your TV ... you will never have to come near your xbox console anymore :-) Can also be really nice if you have a XBMC-only xbox (turn on/off xbox and operate XBMC all with the xbox remote - you don't even need the xbox controller) or for software and modchip developers that need to 'cold (re)boot' their xbox often. The real tech freaks will probably prefer to build a XIR themself (code and howto is public ... on our tutorial section for example), but this pre-made XIR will allow everyone (the 'Easy Kit' doesn't even require any soldering) to enjoy it at a good price. The XIR Easy Kit (solderless) is sold for US$23, the XIR Pro Kit (same as 'easy' but requires some soldering) is sold for US$19.75 and they ship worldwide.
You can always find this review along the other review on our review page.

Analyst Sees Microsoft Xbox Price Cut on Tuesday
>> It was already known (and reported here) for some time that Microsoft would lower the price of the Xbox to US$149 in USA/CAN, but no exact date was given. From Reuters:
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Reuters) - Piper Jaffray on Friday predicted that Microsoft Corp. would cut the price of its Xbox video game console to $149 next Tuesday, a move which it suggested would spur sales in the short-term. In a research note, Piper Jaffray analyst Tony Gikas said he expected the price cut to take effect at stores as of Tuesday morning.
"We estimate that Xbox unit sales will increase by (4 to 5 times) during the 6 to 8 weeks following the price cut compared to the 6 to 8 week period prior to the price cut (then fall-off)," Gikas said.
Microsoft executives have consistently declined to talk about pricing on their hardware, including this week at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, an industry gathering where some had speculated the price move would be announced.
XBMP/XBMC Logo Contest Over
>> From Gamester17 on xboxmediacenter.com/xboxmediaplayer.de:
First of all we like to apologize to all people who entered the contest for the delay we took in deciding a winner, just know it's very hard to organize such a large team as XBMC/XBMP have become, and on top of that the contenders where all excellent it was so very hard to choose just one. The winner of the XBMP/XBMC Official Logo Competition is Tamper with his 31A entry, congratulation 31A. We will now ask Tamper to tweak and perfect his entry as the official XBMP/XBMC logo(s), he will in exchange receive a Xenuim modchip with LCD-display, (courtesy on Team-OzXodus). Our thanks goes to everyone who entered the contest.

GDC: Microsoft will stay out of mobile console market
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Speaking to gi.biz at the Game Developers Conference, Microsoft's global head of game content Peter Moore has ruled out the possibility of the company launching a mobile games console to compete with PSP or GBA. Although the company will continue to support game developers working on its mobile operating systems - which are used in certain smartphones and PDAs - with the launch of a version of the XNA platform for these devices, Microsoft has no intention of entering the market with hardware of its own.
Both Sony and Nintendo will launch new mobile consoles this year, while Nokia is expected to announce an updated version of the N-Gage platform next month and other phone manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson are planning phones with advanced gaming features.
Update about Gentoox: Ext3 retraction, Magic update and more
>> Lots of news today on gentoox.shallax.com:
* I know a lot of people are going to hate me for this... but after debating for a long long time, I've decided to go back to reiserfs. The reason? Freespace optimisation. The same data that goes into Gentoox on a rieserfs rootfs doesnt even fit into an ext3 rootfs. This is criminally inefficient. Now that sparkle exists, I no longer feel that its necessary to use ext3 since any corruption problems can be fixed quite easily. What I am going to look into now is integrating sparkle into the next gentoox release (i.e. adding a button for it into cromwell and having it installed on the hard drive). Also, I think I will keep the rootfs at 4gb.
* Magic now checks to see if you have an outdated version of portage. If you do, it will automatically upgrade it. Dont worry about this wasting time, it takes about 5 seconds to check your version of portage, and about 2 minutes to upgrade it if its out of date. This is pretty much essential, since running an obsolete version of portage can cause system instability when using emerge.
* Many advances have been made with Cromwell(info), the XboxFB drivers and even Kernel 2.6. Good things come to those who wait!
GDC: Xbox 2 to be unveiled this summer
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
After remaining silent on the topic at GDC, Microsoft is to finally unveil the next incarnation of Xbox this summer, according to a senior development source. Speaking to our correspondent on the GDC show floor today, the source revealed: "Microsoft has told us, and other developers that it doesn't plan to show anything of Xbox 2 until the summer."
Development kits, based on Apple's G5 hardware, are already in circulation, but Microsoft has allegedly ordered devs not to allow them out of their studios, such is the firm's determination to keep a lid on information leaking out about its next move in the console race. "They've been incredibly strict about it," the source added.
Modchip.ca no longer official Xenium resellers.
>> From ozxodus.com:
FRAUDSTERS EXPOSED ! MODCHIP.CA no longer official Xenium resellers.
It has come to our attention that people are confused as to exactly what is happening regarding certain so called "respectable" sites selling fake chips. We had said earlier that we did not want to start a war with cloners and scam artists and for the main part that is still true BUT, when a supposed official reseller of ours starts to sell fake chips and tries to pass them off as authentic Xeniums we cannot and will not just sit back and keep quiet. It is one thing to openly sell "clones" but when you intentionally pass off fake chips as originals you are not only a blatant thief but a fraud and a downright criminal.
MODCHIP.CA is one such site and is the first that we have verified as a fraud. We can confirm that they did have original stock bought from us officially but they have not since re-ordered from us and are therefore willingly and knowingly selling "fakes" and passing them off as originals. WE WILL NOT ALLOW THIS and are extremely angry and disgusted at the audacity and cheek of such criminals to defraud you. What disgusts us is that these greedy, money hungry, thieves will go so far as to LIE to you and claim total innocence as if they did not know what they were buying. THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE. What really makes us wonder is how many other times this has been done by these thieves or how many other products they are passing off as "originals" to unsuspecting customers? (is anything sold by these guys authentic?) Fraud is a serious and punishable offence and we cannot sit back and let it continue.
We apologise for this long post but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We urge all of you that have bought any fakes to report to us immediately and we will assist you in any way we can. Claim your money back and refuse any exchange. We will direct you to a proper and professional business. We WILL NOT SUPPLY these guys any more and until WE SAY SO, they will NEVER stock official OzXodus products. We do not and will not support FRAUDSTERS!!
Microsoft Announces XNA Game Development Platform
>> From games.slashdot.org:
Thanks to GameSpot for its story revealing that Microsoft are unveiling its XNA game software development platform later this morning at the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose. XNA is "designed for use with future iterations of all Microsoft game platforms, including Windows, Xbox, and Windows Mobile-based devices" to make simultaneous platform development easier and cheaper, and the company is also expected to announce "Xbox Live-style functionality for billing, security, and matchmaking being made available to Windows developers... [and] the introduction of controllers that are compatible with all Windows and Xbox game players" as part of this move. IGN Xbox has an interview with Microsoft's Jay Allard and Dean Lester which explains XNA as being a cross-platform, evolving toolset that will ensure backwards compatibility, giving the example: "...[if] Adobe was writing an application for Win95, and then WinNT came out there were special features they could take advantages of -- they didn't have to throw it all away and start again." EU Fines Microsoft $613 Million
>> Not really Xbox news ... but it's still important Microsoft news. From slashdot.org:
As reported by CNN.com, the European Union has hit Microsoft with a record US$613 million fine after a five-year investigation, finding the company guilty of abusing the 'near-monopoly' of the Windows operating system. Microsoft has been given 90 days to make a European version of Windows available without a media player and 120 days to give programming codes to rivals in the server market to allow 'full interoperability' with desktops running Windows. Microsoft plans to appeal the decision.
First Xbox 2 software to be unveiled tomorrow
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
It's been known for some time that Microsoft plans to use the GDC press conference, which happens tomorrow morning at 11am Pacific Time, to talk about the Xbox 2 for the first time in public - but what exactly the company will be showing off is not known.
Development sources today indicated that Microsoft is not prepared to discuss details of the specification of the console in its announcement tomorrow, and will not be unveiling the actual hardware design either. It's thought that the company is holding back on commenting on exact specification details until it has more concrete information about Sony's plans for PlayStation 3. Instead of hardware, then, Microsoft is expected to talk about software - and today sources indicated to us that when Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach takes to the stage in San Jose tomorrow morning, he will be accompanied by demonstrations of the first confirmed titles for Xbox 2. Sony goes double-layer for DVD burning
>> From pcpro.co.uk:
Sony has announced double-layer DVD burners. There's no doubt to whom the burners will appeal. With 8.5GB of data on a single disc, there's plenty of room for archiving files, but more importantly it represents about four hours of DVD video - enough to record most films to a single disc.
The internal DRU-700A and external USB2 or FireWire DRX-700UL will launch with dual-layer recording speeds of 2.4X as well as up to 8X DVDR, 4X DVDRW, 40X CD-R and 24X CD-RW recording.
The discs will undoubtedly be more expensive than a standard DVD disc - at least initially - as they are a deal more demanding to manufacture. The burners also come with AHEAD Nero software for CD and DVD burning. The internal drive will be available in May and the external in June of this year, costing $230 for the internal and $330 for the external.
Xboxdash.net launches new website + tHc bootdisc info
>> From xboxdash.net:
* Well, thanks to that down time yesterday, the site's been redesigned, both cosmetically (new theme and theme-engine) and internally. You should notice faster loading, a reduced number of ERROR 502's(when too many people are trying access the same thing on a database) and less noticably, "hooks" have been added for features to be inserted soon (like a right hand click menu for when LITE comes out and the site needs two different areas). Even better, a lucious new PM system, so when you recieve a PM you'll know about it Let me know what you think....now!
* tHc bootdisc has become almost as popular as a glass of water in north-easter africa (which in seriousness, is a terrible thing and I implore you to give money to charities to help fix this), and so two valient knights of bandwidth have arisen to the challenge of providing it to all! tHc BOOTDISC (part 1) hosted by Alkane and tHc BOOTDISC (part 2), hosted by Gr0w can be found by asking on #xboxdash or looking for purple writing with the url. NFSU Music Extractor for xbox
>> From readme:
NFSU PC to XBOX Extractor was created by Jin356b. nfsu_music.exe was created by Guru. I did not help Guru with his code, and he did not help me with mine. I simply edited nfsu_music.exe so it would accept the XBOX audio archive's file size. We are not in cooperation, and all the credit for nfsu_music.exe (the backbone of the extraction process that does all the work) goes to Guru. I simply "ported" it for use with xbox.
Purpose: This program automatically lines up the offsets of the XBOX NFSU music archive with the offsets of the PC NFSU music archive. This allows Guru's NFSU Music Extractor to extract the audio tracks from the XBOX version. I did not create or help with the creation of Guru's NFSU Music Extractor. I did change part of Guru's program, so that it would accept a larger file size. I would have changed it so it looked for the different offsets, but i could not find where to change them becaue the program is compressed, and it extracts itself, and it gets reeeeaallly meeeesssyyy. Linksboks 0.91 - Lemmiwinks Edition
>> A new version of LinksBoks(info) has been released. What's new/fixed: - You asked for it: USB keyboard/mouse support (see notes below) Done without the hardware :) Thanks to sebel19 from the gueux forums for testing this out. - Downloads to disk are now working! The default download directory is X:\, it can be changed, check the Options manager. D: is mapped to the LinksBoks directory, not the DVD. - HDTV should work now (still untested though) - Added some options to the Options manager: look in "User interface" - Video calibration screen (Options]Video calibration) to adjust your margins easily. Don't forget to save your options afterwards! - Options can now be saved :). Delete your existing links.cfg & options files. - Fixed the scrolling glitch in the tree-based dialogs. - Changed some mappings in Navigation Mode (B=ESC on keyboard, Y=close current tab/cancel dialog/exit) - Clicking left thumbstick changes input mode as well as BACK - D-pad has a (configurable) repeat rate now.
KNOWN BUGS/RELEASE NOTES for this version: - ftp:, file: protocols are still broken. Expect the 'LINKSBOKS CRASHED!' screens you've seen before. - About the keyboard: only the US layout is supported. Supporting other layouts implies doing the key [-] ascii code mappings by hand, and I'll _never_ do this myself, sorry. - Extra buttons on Intellimouses should normally do back/forward. - It seems the Javascript engine would be a pain in the ass to reenable, so it might stay off :/. It's rather weak anyway, you would be disappointed. - Flash/Java support is basically not possible, so stop asking please :).

New Cordless Xbox Controller Announced
>> From: gaminghorizon.com
The Cordless PrecisionT Controller, brought to you via Logitech, has just been added to the Xbox library of controllers.
Featuring a 2.4 GHz cordless radio frequency (a radius of up to 30ft), the PrecisionT is just as fast and responsive as its predecessor, the Logitech Cordless Controller. But, what makes this new Logitech controller better than the last is its cheaper price, smaller size and lower battery requirement (only two AA batteries this time, lasting up to 50hrs). Fred Swan, Director of Marketing for Logitech’s Interactive Entertainment Business Unit says that, “We believe this combination of affordability and performance will convert even more gamers to the fun and flexibility of cordless play."
One of the cool features about this controller is its sleep mode. If a gamer doesn’t use their controller, or if it goes out of range, for more than five minutes, the controller will automatically switch into sleep mode in order to save your batteries. With that kind of a feature, I’d say that it’s worth the $49.99 (US). Keep an eye out for this baby to be hitting store shelves late on this spring.
FBI adds to wiretap wish list
>> From news.com:
A far-reaching proposal from the FBI, made public Friday, would require all broadband Internet providers, including cable modem and DSL companies, to rewire their networks to support easy wiretapping by police.
The FBI's request to the Federal Communications Commission aims to give police ready access to any form of Internet-based communications. If approved as drafted, the proposal could dramatically expand the scope of the agency's wiretap powers, raise costs for cable broadband companies and complicate Internet product development. Legal experts said the 85-page filing includes language that could be interpreted as forcing companies to build back doors into everything from instant messaging and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) programs to Microsoft's Xbox Live game service. The introduction of new services that did not support a back door for police would be outlawed, and companies would be given 15 months to make sure that existing services comply.
