X-ecuter2 Header-Pin install guide
>> I added an new guide that explains how to install an X-ecuter2 (lite , but pro should be the same) with the header-pin adaptor.
Headerpins are very easy to install (certainly if you have a xbox motherboard without solder in the lpc points) and once it's installed you can easily swap modchips (aslong as they have a headerpin adaptor).
You can check it out here You can buy an X-ecuter2 Lite from Extreme-Mods for just $44.

X-Arcade review
>> XGaming released an arcade controller compatible with MS XBOX a few moths ago. We have been able to test & review the X-Arcade. I've seen alot of "arcade-like" joysticks for home consoles , but honestly , this is the first one I touched that's so near the "real stuff". The controller measures almost 60cm across by about 25cm deep and weighs over 4kg! With 9 buttons per player and 2 buttons for the 1/2 player selector you should have more then enough buttons for each game. The controller will of course also include 2 high precision joysticks molded exclusively for the X-arcade.
Other great feature of this controller is that you can connect it to pretty much everything. The X-arcade is sold with an adaptor for PC , but with the right adaptor (sold separately) you can connect the X-arcade to Xbox , Playstation2 , Gamecube , Dreamcast & Mac. So if you have multiple consoles and you're a real hard-core gamer , this arcade controller is probably the ideal solution for your needs.
I invited 2 die-hard arcade freaks to test this baby. They played Dead Or Alive 3 (tecmo) for over 5hours ... and they both agreed that this is the first arcade controller for home consoles that really looks & feels like the real thing. The joysticks are very responsive and the buttons big , clicky and solid. A nice feature is that you can change the sensitivity of the joysticks (by unscrewing the "lid" that covers the bottom). For example you can change the joystick from a 4-way to a 8-way. We also tried the controller with Tetris Worlds and some games of MAME-X b6. Right now the compatibility with MAME-X b6 isn't perfect but the new version of MAME-X (somewhat later then expected due Superfro's hard drive crash) will be 100% compatible with the X-arcade for 100% MAME-fun on Xbox.
Of course , it's very important to check the strength of both buttons and joystick, so we decided to play some "intensive" Tetris World games. Believe me , the controller did suffer ... both buttons & joysticks have been "under attack" for 2-3 hours and they all survived without any problem ... so I really don't think you have to worry about the quality of the X-arcade.
So , is it all that perfect? Well actually ... pretty much , there's just one downside ... the price. 179USD for the X-arcade with Xbox adaptor and 29.95USD per extra adaptor will probably reserve this controller for the real die hard gamers. But you pay for what you get , this is no small plastic controller "made in Taiwan" that will break down after you played 2hours. You pay for quality , so if you got the money and you love arcade games this is the controller you need. They now also sell an X-arcade for 1 player ("X-Arcade Solo One Player Controller") for 99.95USD. Also note that once MAME-X b7 is released this controller will become a real must-have for the fans. You can of course also connect it to PC and play the PC version of MAME.

neXgen v0.9c released!
>> Team neXgen released their first working beta of the new neXgen dashboard.
From the nfo/readme:
HTTP Server (status 95% done) Provide easy to use interface like home routers have user:xbox pass:xbox + Filesystem browser + Remote control of menus + Cloning tools
FTP Server (status 98% done) Provide compatibility with clients setup for use with Evox user:xbox pass:xbox
QuickPlay (status 90% done) Storage menu extension to provide a way of launching games/apps. Shouts: We would like to thank Team Xecuter for their assistance throughout the development cycle for neXgen. Without their continued support we would surely have failed long long ago. We would also like to thank the Evox crew for giving us something to measure against. We most importantly would like to thank the users, for without them this would be a complete waste of time.
nexgen.xml is the configuration file. You can use a normal txt editor (like notepad in windows) to edit the file. neXgen will boot fine with the xml included , but if you want to configure it correctly for your Xbox , remove the "!--" and "--" from the lines you configure 'cause else they are is in comment (ignored).
For example: All your utils are on f:/utils/ & e:/utils/ and all your games in f:/games/ & e:/games/ and you want a mainlink to the evox dash (c:/evoxdash.xbe) & Mediaplayer 2.0 (e:/utils/xbmp/default.xbe) on the mainscreen of neXgen. Your xml file should look like this:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?> <menu> <FTP INHIBIT="0" USER="xbox" PASS="xbox"/> <HTTP INHIBIT="0" USER="xbox" PASS="xbox"/> <SEARCH SECTION="APPLICATIONS" PATH1="F:\utils" PATH2="E:\utils"/> <SEARCH SECTION="GAMES" PATH1="F:\games" PATH2="E:\games"/> <ITEM TEXT="EvolutionX Dash" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="C:\evoxdash.xbe"/> <ITEM TEXT="XB Mediaplayer2" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="E:\utils\xbmp\default.xbe"/> </menu>
HTTP access (usern: xbox , passw: xbox) - use any webbrowser (internet explorer , mozilla , netscape , ...) http://xbox:xbox@[ip of your xbox on your home network] (unless you changed pass & username in the xml file)
FTP access (usern: xbox , passw: xbox) - use any ftp client (flashfxp , cuteftp , ...) ftp://xbox:xbox@[ip of your xbox on your home network] (unless you changed pass & username in the xml file)
You can also edit the colors of the neXgen dash. Just add these 3 lines in the xml file: <COLOR1 R="64" G="192" B="0"/> <COLOR2 R="192" G="255" B="24"/> <COLOR3 R="64" G="192" B="0"/> These values are rgb values. (red, blue and green channels) Color1 is backdrop/crosshairs, 2 is selected menu, 3 is deselected menu

XECUTER2 IGR & EVOX IGR Confusion
>> From x-ecuter.com:
We're getting a number of emails asking what the difference is between the two IGR's.
Xecuter2 IGR: Designed to be used with games/executables that run from hard drive. The whole point was you didn't have to reboot your machine, it simply reset to menu so you could immediately access your next game/executable. You need to have the Xecuter 2 BIOS to use the feature correctly. The latest BIOS version is 4974.
EvoX IGR: Reboots the machine, not rest to dashboard. Is not BIOS dependant, code runs from replacement EvoX dashboard. The latest dashboard version is 1.8.3285
We hope this answers your questions on the differences between the two versions.
Team X-ecuter: No More Mod Wars & Bashing
>> From xecuter.gotmod.com:
It seems a lot of people on xbox-scene think we were wrong to retaliate against Matrix with their "RRP Lies" comments towards us.
It wasnt a reply taken as a team it was a reply by myself and I shouldn't have done it as it was stupid and childish. It is strange how we get pounced on for retaliating to a blatant slur, but at the end of the day it helps no one to answer a stupid question with a stupid answer.
The team as a whole will endeavour to produce many new software products to make the xbox experience that much more fun no matter what mod you use.
We'll continue to help design better mods and competition is all good and healthy, although it should never degenerate into a stupid ass flame war. Its not only stupid but boring too. Unfortunatley the flames are fanned by one too many ignorant idiots who seem hell bent on causing trouble, this cannot be helped and these people in no way speak for Xecuter.
In future we'll simply let the software and electronics do the talking.
PS For the last time (we really dont want to say this again) - we never once promised or offered any update to Xecuter1. There wasn't even any question of updates back then. It was the first LPC mod on the market and we simply didnt see any use for it at the time. We did say we would look at a possible updater as a seperate add-on, but we never once said it was a feature. In fact 6 months later Xecuter1 STILL works - so enough already with the mis-informed bashing.
PPS you HAVE to get the new neXgen release
They also let us know that as an apology they will be sending us 50 (yes F-I-F-T-Y) free X2 Lite modchips to give away to our visitors! We will let you know more about this as soon as we have more info.

MS bashing PS2 part3
>> After the flash movie and the FAQ answer earlier this year there's a new anti-PS2 ad.
They are comparing Xbox Live with PS2 Online. It's lame thought. An example:
Question 6: How do you feel about connecting your console to the Internet?
A. I want it quick and painless. B. I enjoy complicated projects. I went to M.I.T.
Answer: If you chose A, you'll love the way the Xbox Live Dashboard does practically everything for you automatically, and the Web site tells you everything you need to know to connect fast and start playing. We've even got provider-specific information and a logo program for equipment that we've tested and verified works great with Xbox Live.
If you chose B, you will surely enjoy the painstaking and arduous connection process possible with the PlayStation 2 online service. When you're not screwing in adapters, you're searching far and wide for info on how to connect. And ISP info? They've got phone numbers for a few of them. What more could you ask for?
Thanks goes to David Y. for sending us this link.

Lik-Sang case ...
>> There's a good article on siliconvalley.com about the lik-sang.com case. You can also check the Slashdot discussion.
Some parts of the article:
Suppose all the companies that manufactured cars informed customers, in the fine print of the purchase contract, that they could only have the car serviced and repaired at a company-owned dealership. Suppose, further, that the automakers enforced this rule by installing electronic hood-locks that could be opened only by dealers with authorized hardware and software keys -- and then sued out of existence anyone selling an unauthorized key. You'd call your member of Congress to complain. And Congress would pass a law prohibiting such a blatantly anti-competitive, anti-customer practice.
The issue is front and center in an obscure but important legal battle under way in Hong Kong. The three major video-game console makers -- Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft -- have used the courts against a seller of hardware modification chips, often called ``mod chips,'' that give the boxes more capabilities than the makers allow when sold off the shelf.
The console makers have a problem, no doubt, but they've helped create it themselves. They've established a business model that relies on selling consoles at a loss, then profiting from the highly controlled sale of licensed games. The regional coding scheme, also used with DVD movies, is part of the entertainment industry's effort to totally control distribution of its products -- and profits. The industry chooses when and where to release games and movies and what price to charge in each part of the globe for essentially the same product. This blatantly anti-competitive process is nothing but market manipulation. For reasons that escape me, these giant companies get away with it.
Kampl (Lik-Sang founder) gave me a demonstration of the console companies' hypocrisy. He took me to a major retailer of music, movies and game software in the center of Hong Kong. There on the shelf were game titles labeled with United States regional coding -- in a place where the game makers don't sell U.S.-coded consoles. He took one of the games to a clerk and asked how he was supposed to play it. ``Oh,'' said the clerk, ``you have to put in some of those special chips.'' Kampl shook his head, visibly frustrated.
