tHc dashboard hibernation over
>> From JbOnE on xboxdash.net (tHc LITE(info), tHc Original(info)):
No rest for the wicked apparently ... and right back to work I go
It's with great pleasure that I can say I will have an alpha in a very select few testers hands as a birthday present to myself (Sunday), so you can tell this is going to be a full court press till completion. Don't expect to see any screenies till I get to the mesh stage of this project - well maybe a couple of suprise bonus feature screenies along the way.

Implimented so far:
* all runs from one directory - no more dependency on files on c partition
* total removal of xip protection... period
* dongle free dvd playback
Still to come:
* ftp
* custom mesh format as well as original
* skinning/materials loaded from xbx/ini as well as changable in dash without need for reboot
* extended use of filesystem removing dependency on items being in xips
* removal of 100 soundtrack limit
... tons more - but if ya know them all now - where's the fun in that? Now all I gotta do is come up with a 'kitchy' name for this dash, hmm ... hit me with name ideas in #xboxdash

Stay tuned for updates as they are worked in... and welcome to the rebirth of the dash we all love

New survey shows video gaming has finally overtaken PC gaming
>> From tomshardware.com:
Though electronic gaming arguably first gained national popularity first with devices now refered to as console systems, such as the Atari 2600 and Colecovision, the PC soon became the place to go for the majority of gamers. The PC's ability to be upgraded and take advantage of the latest advances in technology meant it was likely to have the latest and greatest games that would push the envelope visually. This year, for the first time the majority of gamers are reporting that they now turn to other sources for gaming than the traditional PC.
The annual "Digital Gaming in America" survey, published by Ziff Davis' Media's Game Group, found that 54.5 million households played video games and only 52.3 million Americans played PC games.
The study revealed other new trends including gaming's pull of consumers away from television. Twenty-six percent of those surveyed said their TV viewing had decreased during the last year.

X-Tender Case Mod released *updated*
>> From teamxtender.com:
The X-Tender kit allows you to unleash the power of your Linux machine by adding the necessary space to support up to two additional internal hard drives! Molded to perfectly integrate with your Xbox, this kit comes with a custom front panel, with 3 activity LED, a custom made hard drive mounting plate to accommodate one or two additional drives, and a custom molded rear panel. Specially designed X-Tender rods are included to internally support the expansion, allowing you to securely reassemble the machine. Additional space on front panel will allow the support of one LCD display on each side of the system, or additional LED or cold cathode lighting.
You can switch between the drives with the front panel buttons: When the Xbox is powered off, press front panel button 1 for 2 seconds to start with hd1, press front panel button 2 for 2 seconds to start with hd2, press front panel button 3 for 2 seconds to start with hd3. When the Xbox is already powered on then you can do the same so the Xbox will reset and boot from the other hard drive.
*update* Team X-Tender informed us there was a slight mistake in the text on their site. You can switch between HD's with the front panel buttons, NOT with the remote control. Above text has been updated accordingly.

You can buy the X-Tender from lik-sang.com (59.90USD or ~49.58EUR)

Xenium OS 2 Beta 2
>> From teamxodus.com:
We have just released a Beta for Xenium OS(info) 2.
Apologies for our silence and delays are naturally in order but we hope that recent announcements and developments can at least offer some justification and explanation. Your involvement and contributions with bug reports has been overwhelming and much appreciated. We have worked through all of them as thoroughly and diligently as possible and now feel we are confident for this public release. With your help, we believe that we have now drastically improved the overall stability of the kernel, and are nearing a "final" 2.0 release. The only reason we are not deeming this revision "2.0 final" is that we still have a few kinks to work out with some of our newer features. As we wanted this release to be as rock-solid as possible, those features are currently still disabled. Once we get the last few bugs worked out of these components, we will release "RC1," and if no major issues are reported, will deem the image "Final".

A quick word about where we'll be going from here:
When 2.0 "Final" is released, it will actually be released as XeniumOS 2.0.0 as we will be moving to a new method of versioning. From there, when we release minor updates, bugfixes, and small feature changes, we will increase the subminor version number. So, the first release after 2.0.0 will be 2.0.1, and will be primarily minor changes. When we release a new version with several new, major features, we will increase the minor version number, going to 2.1.0. When drastic changes have occurred to the OS, we will increase the major version number, bringing us to 3.0.0.
We believe that this new system will help to drive more frequent revisions, and create a clear distinction between minor and major version changes. We hope that you will realize how serious we now are in acheiving targeted goals and in responding to consumer reports quickly.

Changelog for Beta 2:
+ Preliminary Quickboot support (press button AFTER power-on)
+ Added remote gamepad emulation via telnet
+ Added "Restore Factory Defaults"
* Improved organization of settings menus
* Reduced flash space consumption
* Changed backdrop
- Fixed problem with HDD Upgrade Wizard not copying some Live information properly
- Fixed a rare race condition which could lead to OS corruption during flashing
- Resolved several Kernel Panics related to saving configuration to flash
- Fixed a bug in the directory enumerator that would cause problems with some filenames
- Several additional updates to filesystem and IDE/ATAPI drivers
- Improved Flash/Ram Filesystem Performance
- Fixed some protocol handling problems with FTP server
- Fixed improper handling of corrupted system date/time
- Resolved several memory leaks

Legend:
+ Addition

Project Jihad W.I.P. update
>> Jihad(info) is a homebrew arcade/adventure game for Xbox currently in development by 'The unProfessional'. The game is designed to be a free, fun, multiplayer homebrew game for everyone to enjoy. From theunprofessional.com:
Well I'm getting back into actual visual work, so I'll have some things to post on the website. As you may know, I've been working (whenever I can) on networking and physics, and honestly, there isn't much to see in those regards. Physics still aren't cool enough for me to brag :) But as soon as they are, I'll post vids.
I just posted a quick screenie demonstrating the particle system. This doesn't show much, but it's already capable of all sorts of effects, such as rainfall, snow, smoke, flames, fountains, etc. The pictured flame effect, in combination with good smoke would look pretty badass IMHO. I'm working on better smoke textures, and possibly shaders, to spruce that up.

Tokyo Wars W.I.P. update
>> Tokyo Wars is a homebrew tank game in an urban environment currently in development by Team AfterShock. From shizno on aftershock.xbox-scene.com:
I have been busy this week playing on xbox live, but I did get a bit done.... which are:
1: Bullet to Tank collision detection....
2: Smoke particle effects for damaged tanks
3: Cloth 'physics' for SCENERY flags (poles), even though its not physics, just a sine wave running through the vertex buffer making it look like the flag is waving in wind... for the actual flag for the gametype Capture the Flag, I might use actual physics like HALO but thats still up in the air.
4: There is a poll on the site now for what the game should be called, either Tokyo Wars, Apocalypse (something here) or Other.
5: Decided I might shrink the level yet again, and turn the game into a fast, party game (because I think it would be a better overall game this way, instead of boring tank sim crap)... but that's not 100% certain yet....

Here is a screenshot of two tanks testing out the new collision and flag physics, USA and New Zealand flags.
