Modchip protected games ?
>> One of the admins on the sierra forums says most games made after 15 September might have a Modchip protection.
Have any of you installed a Mod chip in your Xbox? I know there is some new security stuff from Microsoft that went into the latest batch of games (those that went to manufactureing after September 15th or so) that is supposed to prevent games from operating on modded systems.
I don't have problems with companies trying to protect their intellectual property , but I don't think blocking ORIGINAL/LEGAL games on a modded xbox is a right move ... Anyway most new generation mods have a disable switch (and for most old mods you can build a homebrew switch).
You can check out the thread here : community.sierra.com/WebX?14@217.wDdfbE3BaNL.0@.ef975aa/13 (no direct link , copy-paste link in new window)
Note: This news is NOT officially confirmed by Microsoft

Problems solved
>> Sorry for the somewhat "fucked up" xbox-scene layout the last 3hours. Noone tried to hack us , but like syrus said in the previous news our main imageserver (a separate server where we host our images) is having some serious problems. (showing random images , even images that were not in our account). All images have now be moved to another server and I hope everything is working fine again.

Problems...
>> As you probally saw there have been some problems with X-S. These problems (which many people thought was an attempt to take down X-S) were caused by our image server. It was being upgraded and caused different images to appear. We appologize for any inconvienence it may have caused and expect X-S to be working shortly.

Xodus shipping info
>> From Easybuy2000.com :
Official EB2k Statement on MatriX Availability / Shipping We would like to clear up a few misconceptions regarding the production and shipment of the MatriX modchip. There were delays in getting the product mass produced and shipped in time for the release dates which we originally provided. We apologize for this. Our manufacturers in China are working hard to get all of them to us so that we can ship them to those who placed an order, as well as those who will place one.
We are shipping our recently received batch as of today, Sept. 27, 2002. We will receive another batch early next week. Please be patient with us, as we are doing our very best! Mass producing complex products takes time, testing and patience because everything needs to be perfected.
We want to assure those who placed an order, that you WILL receive what you ordered. Please see our production photos to see how they are coming along. We appreciate your understanding and patience in this situation.
Windows 2000 on Xbox via Linux
>> From Xbox-Linux :
EUROPE -- September 26 2002 -- Today the Xbox Linux Project announced that Microsoft Windows 2000 has been successfully started and run on a Microsoft Xbox gaming console. This has been accomplished by using the Linux operating system, which already works reliably on the Xbox, as host environment. Windows has been run inside Linux with common PC virtualization software.
Full networking is supported and Windows 2000 can make use of a keyboard and a mouse connected to the Xbox, as well as of any other devices connected through the USB. The performance of Windows 2000 inside Linux on the Xbox is good enough to play MPEG-4 movies at fullscreen. Common Windows applications like Microsoft Office work without any problems.
Although running Windows 2000 might be an interesting application for the Xbox, the Xbox Linux Project continues working on Linux-based solutions. Linux is not only more versatile and more flexible - Linux as well as many important Linux applications, such as OpenOffice, audio and video players, are available free of charge and can be downloaded from the internet.
A video showing Windows 2000 running inside Linux on an Xbox is available at here
New Xbox
>> It has already been in this news several days ago , but now it's also confirmed by MicroSoft themself. The new Xbox (let's call it v2) is coming.
From gamespot :
The newly configured units were first spotted in Australia, where Xbox hackers spotted slight changes to the main circuit board that likely will make it impossible to use current "mod chips"--add-ons that bypass security measures built into the hardware.
The new configuration reportedly also uses a different type of BIOS, the basic software that controls the console's operation, and eliminates the fan that had been used to cool the console's custom Nvidia graphics processor.
An Australian hobbyist posting on the Xbox Hacker site said he tried all currently available mod chips on the new Xbox configuration and none worked.
From theregister :
Although Microsoft habitually experiments on the Australians, we do not think this is an experiment. Microsoft sees keeping Xbox closed as a security/revenue issue, and will therefore keep trying to do so. You'll recall it recently advertised for someone in this patch and it's to expected that the company will react to successive mods with successive mod-blocks.
According to the Xboxhacker posting, there are various modifications which may be cost and reliability related (e.g. the video chip loses the fan, and the DVD Rom has been switched to a Philips. The key change that at least impedes the modders is however that a small chip that used to be behind the onboard bios has been removed. It would seem likely that the bios itself has undergone some modification along with this.
The xboxhacker.net article they are talking about can be found here.
New xbox are already in australia and coming very soon (now) to Europe & USA. If you wanna make sure you buy a v1 , there's a hole at the bottom of an 'xbox box' , there you should be able to see the manufacturing date. If it's August 2002 or later , buy at own risk. If it's prior August 2002 , it should be a v1. (the date is written in the year-month-day format)
It is unkown yet if they just changed the RC4 , changed the LPC , added more security checks or anything else. More news 'bout this v2 xbox soon ...

Xodus FULL installation guide
>> xodus-chip just released the FULL installation guide for the No Solder Xodus/MatriX modchip.
What's in the tutorial : *How to flash the Xodus/Matrix Modchip with a 256k bios image *How to open your xbox *How to install & correctly align the modchip *What those 4 different modes are
You can download the guide in pdf format from our mirrors here(mirror1) or here(mirror2) or check xodus-chip.com
Copy&Paste from the guide explaining what those 4modes are :
Mode 1 (Dip switch 1 & 2 ON) (LED: Red or Green flashing) Test/Disable This mode is primarily used for the alignment of the Matrix during installation. It may also be used to fully disable the Matrix while in circuit. Mode 2 (Dip switch 1 OFF, 2 ON) (LED: Green) Always On This mode enables the Matrix to take over the original bios at all times. Mode 3 (Dip switch 1 ON, 2 OFF) (LED: Green = Matrix, Red = Original) Swap mode This mode works as follows: On every power up the Matrix “bios” is loaded indicated by the Green LED. To switch to the original bios the user must load a game and then press eject, at this time the LED will turn Red indicating that the original bios is active. To switch back the user may either turn off and on the console or repeat the above. Mode 4 (Dip switch 1 OFF & 2 OFF) (LED: Orange flashing) Write enable In this mode the Matrix is always active but has the ability to be flash updated via DVD rom. We do not recommend you leave this mode on permanently, a bad update of the flash will mean you will have to reprogram the Matrix via the programmer.
We will review this modchip once we got the sample from easybuy2000.
Buy now the NO WIRES & NO SOLDER Xodus/MatriX modchip from easybuy2000 (the official reseller) for $59 (WorldWide Shipping) and get one from the first batch! (starts shipping within 48h). Special promotions: *if you buy 3 you get FREE overnight shipping *if you buy 10 you get 30% off.

Xodus installation Movie!
>> xodus-chip.com released a movie showing how easy it is to install a Xodus/MatriX modchip. (15secs to install the mod)
You can download the vids from our mirror here(mirror1) or here(mirror2) , or check xodus-chip.com
Like we assumed in the previous post they use the screw near the LPC bus to fix the modchip on the board. The movie also shows there's a nice little green/red led that shows if the mod has the correct contact with the LPC bus or not. Once the led shows green , your modchip is installed & working :-)
Buy now : Xodus/MatriX modchip $59

Xodus/Matrix Pictures Unveiled
>> From Xodus-Chip :
These are pictures of the Xodus prototype :
The modchip itself looks like a lpc modchip but with 'Spring Pins' It also looks like they will use the screw near the LPC bus to fix the pcb on the motherboard. Also note the 2 switches (= 4 modes?) ... there's no official information about those yet. No wires , No solder! The 'programmer' is external (apparently powered by a 9v battery) It will probably soon be possible to update the xodus BIOS directly via xbox software (maybe in the next version of EvoX?)
We should receive a sample early next week , we'll make a review & pictures as soon as possible.
