Some LIVE Data: 1Billion Hours spent on Xbox LIVE every month
>> From majornelson.com:
We’ve just released some interesting Xbox data that I thought you might enjoy:

* There are 42 million consoles sold in 35 countries.
* In the last year alone there has been an 157 percent increase in the time spent watching movies and television on Xbox.
* 42 percent of Xbox LIVE Gold members in the US are watching an average of an hour of television and movies on their Xbox, every single day or more than 30 hours of digitally distributed television and movies a month.
* The 25 million members of Xbox LIVE around the world are each spending more than 30 hours per month on the service – that means cumulatively Xbox LIVE members are now logging more than one billion hours a month on the service.
* Access to Xbox LIVE is expanding from 26 countries to 35 this November.

Carnage Manager v0.2
>> HungryBob released Carnage Manager v0.2 - a file manager for homebrew 360s:
File system manager for Xbox 360 Homebrew console (XEX executable).
On 360 press BACK button for brief controls help.

Features
* all standard file/directory operations copy/delete/mkdir
* multitasking - can do something while files copying...
* background tasks cancelable
* unpacking of RAR archives - UNRAR library version 3.9.10 ported to 360.
* classic double panel user interface

Limitations
Although i tested it for many bugs, currently i consider it to be beta.
there may be places where operations may go wrong, thus list of what not to do...
* don't try to copy files over themselves, to same directory or child directory, may freeze or crash.
* unpack files only to empty directory, if UNRAR encounters same existing file in target directory, it will freeze forever. this is because unrar will try to ask if need to skip, cancel, replace, etc. existing file using STDIN functions, which are stripped from this UNRAR port. use delete operation to wipe files from target dir first.
* any wide character support from official UNRAR library was stripped down (meaning no unicode support). you will most likely end up with corrupted file names when try to unpack such archives. however, since 360's HDD and DVD filesystems allows only multibyte characters in file names, it should be OK to extract DVD backups or other files archivized from that places.
* usb keyboard not supported (well, only in dashboard popup boxes)
* if eject dvd tray, automatically exits to dashboard

Inside story: The birth of Xbox by Ed Fries
>> From develop-online.net:
Offering unprecedented insight, former Xbox boss Ed Fries pulls the curtain back on how Microsoft joined the console race

Ed FRIES: “And then, one day, a couple of guys from the DirectX team dropped by my office, and they said they had this idea. It was called the DirectX Box."
“To image what the early prototype was like, think of a PC with a hidden OS, and putting a PC game in there and it going in auto-install and auto run. So, a little bit like a console."

Ed FRIES: “One group had been working with Sega on the Dreamcast – they had their own proposal for a console that was very much like a PlayStation, y’know, a very straightforward game console."
“Their idea was a basic console with a disc drive and dedicated operating system; no hard-drive."
“Our idea was like a boxed PC at that point. It had an Intel chip. It ran Windows. It had a hard-drive."

"Once we got going, the biggest step we had to take was removing the Windows OS from the Xbox. A key reason why Bill [Gates] chose our team instead of the Dreamcast guys was because our idea for the Xbox kept Windows’ OS inside, theirs didn’t."
"So he wasn’t exactly happy when we told him we’d changed our minds and didn’t want to run Windows anymore."

"In the end, the final design for the Xbox was something in the middle between what our DirectX team wanted and what the other team wanted."

Xbox Revenues Up 33 Percent
>> From gamasutra.com:
Microsoft saw revenues from its Xbox 360 business rise 33% year over year to over $1.2 billion in the first quarter of their current fiscal year, with Halo: Reach alone representing $350 million of that revenue since its launch in September, the company announced today.

The tech giant shipped 2.8 million Xbox 360s in the July through September period, a number 38 percent higher than the 2.1 million shipped in 2009.

As a whole, Microsoft posted record Q1 revenues of over $16 billion, driven primarily by a 66% increase in revenues from the company's Windows and Windows Live division. Profits for the entire company were up 59 percent to over $7.1 billion, with growth in Server & Tools and Business sales helping drive the increase.

AvatarPatch Beta
>> mKo released the first beta of AvatarPatch to be used with homebrew 360s:
It's basically Avatar Patcher combined with organizing tool (like OrganiseLazouzzz).

Features:
-Files can be added with "add file" button or drag/drop.
-"Patch XUID(s)" changes xuid to entered one for every file added to list.
-"Organize" creates new folder structure (content/00...00/..) to programs path where all listed files are copied and appropriately located using mediaIDs.
-Program saves its settings (xuid/size/location) to registry.

To-Do (if i have time and motivation at the same time):
-drag/drop support for folders (now only files)
-ftp (pretty unlikely cause i have no idea what i'm doing)

MS: Kinect Will Turn a Profit at 150USD Launch Price
>> From nytimes.com:
The first Kinect prototype cost Microsoft $30,000 to build, but 1,000 workers would eventually be involved in the project. And now, hundreds of millions of dollars later, the company has a product it can sell for $150 a pop and still turn a profit, Mr. Mattrick says.

Jobs angered when Microsoft bought Bungie
>> From develop-online.net:
Ed Fries, the former vice president of game publishing at Microsoft, and the man central to Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare and Bungie, told Develop he had to personally broker a deal with Apple back in 2000 to appease the indomitable Macintosh boss.

“As soon as we announced we bought Bungie, Steve Jobs called,” Fries said.
“He was mad at [Microsoft CEO Steve] Ballmer and phoned him up and was angry because we’d just bought the premier Mac game developer and made them an Xbox developer.”

MS: Fall 2010 DashBoard Update Won't Happen Today
>> Daniel Maher, Xbox LIVE Editor for the EMEA region, tweeted today that we won't see the Fall 2010 Xbox360 dashboard update today:
Apologies to everyone who's contacted us about the new dash launching today - it's actually coming sometime in November.
While Microsoft never officially confirmed a release date for the new dashboard there were growing rumours it would happen today. Not so it seems ... it's coming in 'November'.
Probably on or before Nov 4th as the Kinect will require the new dashboard to operate.

For those who missed the news yesterday, we highly recommend to NOT update your console whenever MS releases the new dashboard if you have a modified DVD FW until we know more about possible new protections.

New Protections Added to Leaked 12606 and Fall2010 Dashboard?
>> A new beta version [build 12606] of the Fall 2010 [alias 'Kinect'] dashboard has been leaked on the internet a few days ago and it seems like Microsoft added new protections to it. Several users seems to report problems booting certain games from recordable media on 360s with a modified DVD FW.
One of the titles affected seems to be Fable III. The game boots fine from any media on the current dashboard on a 360 with modified FW, but fails to boot from recordable media on the leaked/12606 beta dashboard ["This disc is unreadable"] - while the retail disc will work just fine according to #FW@EFnet.

Right now it's unclear which games, DVD models and/or modified FWs are exactly affected.

The new fall 2010 dashboard might get official released tomorrow [Tuesday Oct 26th 2010] (unconfirmed date, but it will be before Nov 4th anyway) to all 360 owners, so we suggest you do NOT update if you have a modified FW until we know more about these issues.
JTAG users should of course not update at all (will lock-out old CB and make the JTAG hack impossible), they should wait for a new rebooter.
