New trove tree on SourceForge.NET with Xbox/Console categories
>> SourceForge.NET added new project sorting catagories to their "software map". Three new interesting categories for homebrew Xbox projects have been added that will make seaching/browsing related projects easier. We also suggest that all current SF.net Xbox projects add their projects to one of these categories (some did already). Console-based Games (under "Games/Entertainment"): here. Console-based Platforms (under "Other Operating Systems"): here. Microsoft Xbox (under above "Console-based Platforms"): here.

Asteroids v1
>> A port of the Asteroids - an old arcade game made by Atari - to Xbox has been released. The package includes full sourcecode aswell. Here's a description of the original Asteroids I found on 80smusiclyrics.com:
In the years after star wars, anything involving outer space, speedy interstellar craft and dangerous battles was considered golden. Into this arena of sci-fi fantasy came Atari’s Asteroids, one of the most enduring hits in video game history. Atari’s recipe for addiction consisted of the following: one screen, five buttons, one ship, a few UFO’s, and several ship-smashing asteroids. Smack dab in the center of the action was your triangle-shaped spacecraft, adrift in a sea of space rocks. The Blasting large, slow-moving asteroids turned them into two medium-sized, speedier asteroids. Another blast at the medium asteroids split them into small, fast-moving asteroids, which could be vaporized with one more shot. Thus, if you started firing wildly into fields of big asteroids, you would likely end up in an even bigger mess than you started with, facing a swarm of tiny, zippy asteroids. The controls allow you to rotate left and right, thrust, warp into hyperspace, and most importantly, to fire your blaster at the rocky menaces. For a generation of video game addicts, Asteroids will always mean simple graphics, stressful and addictive gameplay, and dreams of high-scoring glory.
Halo 2 Launcher
>> From readme/nfo:
Q: What is Halo 2 Launcher? A: It is a very simple xbox application that allows users to pick if they want to launch Halo 2 version 1.0 or version 1.1 Q: Why would I want to launch Halo 2 1.0 if I have 1.1? A: The 2 versions of Halo 2 are not compatable over system link and the XDK cannot be used to take screen shots of Halo 2 1.1
Requirements: You must have a modded xbox with Halo 2 installed on your harddrive. You also need the Halo 2 1.1 update installed.
X2 5031 Bios
>> Team Xecuter released another new build of their new X2 Bios with Config Live:
I think we finally have this nailed to a rock solid release. Thanks to the thousands of testers hammering the shit out of this bios over the last couple of weeks. We have also been overwhelmed with the massive support from modchip users the world over. It's not every day you get duox/smartxx/xeniam etc. users singing Xecuter's praises - at least they now what the fuss has always been about. We have more plans to improve the X2 bios in the future. Our next priority is to go back to X3 and get a new build finished and we also have a bunch of other cool stuff we are working on - watch this space.....
Xecuter would also like to give props to Nghtshd and Klutsh for their awesome X2 config apps - keep 'em coming! http://home.alltel.net/nghtshd/x2ool.html http://x-projects.xbox-scene.com
[5031] * fixed: x2logo.bmp display bugs solved * fixed: the wild rings game was not booting again ... fixed now (this game blows) * fixed: made dash pathes a litte more tolerable, drive character is no longer case sensitive * note: LedColor also supports other values than the ones listed - check out nghtshd's x2ool for more versatile led modes!
And for those that suck melons for breakfast Razz... x2_5031_vOLD_512k.bin - older xbox versions v1.0 - v1.5 ONLY x2_5031_v16plus_512k.bin - xbox versions v1.6 and v1.6b ONLY Rom = "X2 5031 vOLD",0x7007ccc64406042f16c5b2dc7e9c7b9d Rom = "X2 5031 v16plus",0xa2a865546ea405f4d3b6448625d306f5
And no this bios cannot be split in half to be 256k and flashed to TSOP If you find a way to do it pls send an email to wtf@noobville.com - thanks
GameSpot's Rumor Control: Backward-compatibility and more
>> From GameSpot.com:
* RUMOR: The Xbox 360 will be backwards-compatible. * Source: A survey sent to Xbox Live subscribers. * The official story: Microsoft has not made any announcements regarding backwards-compatibility and does not comment on rumors or speculation."--Microsoft representative. * What we heard: As the launch of Microsoft's next-generation console nears, the amount of rumors surrounding it is reaching critical mass. One of the biggest points of speculation is whether or not the device will be backwards-compatible, given current-gen Xbox games are designed to run with a 40GB hard drive and credible photos of the Xbox 360 show it with an optional hard drive. However, this week, numerous Xbox Live users reported they were sent a survey that explicitly stated they will be able "to play against gamers who are on Live through Xbox 2--as long as they are playing a current-generation Xbox game." Although Microsoft would not officially comment, the volume of the reports and the clarity of the survey's wording make it a near certainty that at least one model of the Xbox 360 will be backwards-compatible. * Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus.
There are more 'rumor controls' over at GameSpot.com. Here's a short overview: * Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo: Elements of Power will be Xbox 360 launch titles -> a guarded not bogus * The Xbox 360's controllers will be compatible with PC games -> Not bogus (no wonder ... MS said it themself as was reported in this news) * The Nintendo Revolution will feature 3D projection -> Undecided

Microsoft 3rd-Qtr Net Doubles; Costs Fall, Sales Rise - Xbox back in red
>> From bloomberg.com/gamesindustry.biz:
Microsoft Corp., the world's biggest software maker, said third-quarter earnings almost doubled as legal costs fell and sales of programs to run networks increased. Revenue next year may beat analysts' expectations. Net income rose to $2.65 billion, or 23 cents a share, from $1.32 billion or 12 cents, a year ago, the Redmond, Washington- based company said today in a statement. Sales rose 4.9 percent to $9.62 billion, short of the $9.83 billion average estimate of 22 analysts polled by Thomson Financial, as Windows and server sales missed the company's forecasts. While the company overall saw solid profit growth, the Xbox division slipped back into the red with a $164 million operating loss. Revenues in the Home and Entertainment Division, which primarily houses the Xbox project, actually grew year on year - rising to $583 million from $519 million in the same quarter last year.
Sales growth will accelerate to as much as 11 percent next year, the first time in three years that Microsoft has forecast a pace of more than 10 percent. The prediction stoked optimism that investments by Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer in network software and Xbox games consoles may help overcome sagging demand for Windows personal-computer software. Samsung and Microsoft announce HDTV Alliance on Next-Gen. Xbox
>> Here's a new press release from Microsoft:
New York, NY -- Samsung Electronics, a global HDTV leader, and Microsoft Corp., a leading force in the software and video game industries, today announced an alliance to elevate gaming to the next level through high-definition technology. Microsoft has chosen Samsung as the exclusive HDTV worldwide marketing partner for the next-generation Xbox® high-definition (HD) gaming platform. The announcement was made today during the Home Entertainment Expo at the New York Hilton. The next-generation Xbox and Samsung HDTV combination is designed to deliver the most advanced and realistic high-definition experience to gamers worldwide. To promote the HD Era, the companies plan to place over 25,000 Samsung high-definition televisions in Microsoft® Xbox retail kiosk locations across the globe.
The new 23" Samsung LCD TV (LNR238W) to be paired at retail with the new Xbox console offers a super-fast 12 millisecond pixel switching speed, which will enable intense action while overcoming any motion artifacts. In addition, the Fixed Pixel Device eliminates scan lines, further ensuring gameplay is smooth and flicker-free. Xbox chief (Robbie Bach) talks up next generation
>> From CNet News.com:
PALO ALTO, Calif.--Sony's PlayStation Portable is an impressive little gadget, but it won't give the company any advantage in the battle for the living room, Microsoft's top Xbox executive said Wednesday.
Bach said the decision to give the next Xbox a public unveiling on worldwide TV, as opposed to the usual press briefing, is partly a recognition that games no longer appeal to just a niche audience. While advancements in video game hardware will likely continue to run on the current four- to five-year cycle, Bach said consumers can also expect more gradual enhancements through updates to software and the Xbox Live online gaming service. AfterShock Pool SX v1.0
>> Shizno of Team AfterShock released a new homebrew poolgame for Xbox. From readme/nfo:
IMPORTANT: THIS GAME HAS NOT GOT ANY AI AT ALL (I removed it, it sucked like a noob adding a single line to source code and calling himself a gangster). Version 2 will be coming out with Networking (and MAYBE AI if my little brain can learn the math required but don't hold your breath). So it was either release now or delay it a few months while I work on my next project. Lantus would like it if you thought of this as a Lantus Birthday Release.
Game Types include 8 Ball, 9 Ball, Cut Throat (3 players), Red Vs Blue© and Mini-Golf-Pool©. Minigolf is pretty fun, so even if you think pool is gay as fuck you might wanna check it out. I made a custom table builder (which was a fucking pain in the ass btw [theres a reason why you don't see tools like that on consoles]) and infact every table in the game was built in the in-game-editor so it does work pretty good once you learn it/get used to it.
This game ships with no music so you'll want to have custom soundtracks. Flicker Filter control added for your pleasure. There are NO CRC/MD5 checks on ANY of the files so feel free to change anything you dont like. My artist is away at a fucking hippy gathering so had to model everything/steal all the textures == fucking ugly but whatever. Don't fuck with the physics values unless you are extremely bored.
Any bugs goto our official forum on Xbox-Scene message boards: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=126.
TheInquirer.net: Xbox 360 to be backwards compatible
>> From TheInquirer.net:
A QUESTIONNAIRE being taken online by Xbox Live users appears to give the final confirmation that Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible - at least, if you buy it with the optional hard drive. The questionnaire deals with Xbox Live and says subscribers through the original Xbox will be able to play against gamers on Xbox 2 -- as long as they are playing a current generation Xbox game.
"Xbox Live is an online gaming service that works across both the current Xbox system and the future Xbox 2. You will be able to play online and compete against others across both consoles. If you are playing an Xbox game on Live you will be able to compete against people playing that same game on Xbox 2".
Xbox 360: Embedded DRAM Spec Confirmed
>> From TeamXbox.com:
Today, NEC Electronics has confirmed that Microsoft will incorporate leading-edge embedded DRAM (eDRAM) technology from NEC Electronics in the Xbox 360.
This custom memory has been created mostly to perform anti-aliasing operations and help overcome today's biggest problem in graphics: memory bandwidth. By using this embedded RAM, which is similar to a processor's cache memory, the Xbox 360 will be able to run games at 720p HDTV resolution, that is 1280x720, with full screen anti-aliasing and almost no impact on framerate. Xbox 360 will launch with over 15 titles?
>> From joystiq.com:
According to the latest rumors, the Xbox 360 will debut with roughly 15 to 20 games, with additional waves being released every few weeks. Many of the launch titles are thought to be next-gen sequels of established franchises. Topping that list is the long-awaited sequel to Perfect Dark, as well as a half-dozen or so racing titles, including Project Gotham, NFSU, Test Drive, a new Namco series, and the possibility of a Burnout installment. XDisc Automaters v1.0
>> From readme/nfo:
XDisc Automaters are a collection of 2 automation scripts that will give you quick access to extracting and creating XBox ISOs in Mac OS X 10.4. Once installed, they will show up in your "Automater" menu when you right click on a folder or iso file in the finder...quick and easy! They use the new Automater application inside Mac OS X 1.04, so 10.4 is required for them to work. They use extract-xiso(info) 2.3 to create and extract the ISOs.
OurColony.net Reveals New Image: Memory Card?
>> OurColony.net, an Alternate Reality Game that is (probably) a Microsoft marketing campaign building up to the launch of the next generation Xbox (like Ilovebees was for Halo2), today released another picture to the teams that answered the last challenge correctly. The picture, taken upside-down, is probably a memorycard inside the Xbox360 memorycard slot. You can see the slot matches the slots showed on the Xbox360 design renders posted friday. Also note the "64^" written on the memcard ... which is probably 64MB - the size of memcard (or one of the sizes - it's not excluded there will be several memcard sizes). Of course this image might not show the final hardware, the ourcolony ARG is all about teasers and buidling up the suspense... I can imagine the final memcard will have atleast a nicer color and sticker on the back.

Dash2GAM v3.1B
>> 2G Collective released a patch to upgrade the recently released Dash2GAM(info) v3.0B(see news) to v3.1B. Here's a translation I made of their news (french to english):
Fixed Bugs: * A bug with some skins made all orbs appear after leaving Memoryx from the mainmenu * A bug that caused the background image not to show up after leaving Memoryx if there was only one image in the skin and image choice option was set on rnd. * A bug in the start-up menu choice option could make the MainMenu crash * A bug that caused the MusicPanel not to show up with some skins Changed Stuff: * The Scan HDD Panel will only show-up while the dash is booting when: -you launch the dashboard for the first time -you change from newbie to pro configuration or from pro to newbie. * New translation of the language and info files to spanish (Thanks to rezzo) * Now displays seconds in the tHc Hour Panel * The submenu 'Video' of the 'Configuration' has changed because a new menu has been added (see below). Added Stuff: * You can now chose if you want to display the hour in 12h or 24h format (see screenshot). -Option 22 in the file 'ConfigSysteme.xbc' -Submenu 'Heure' (Hour) in the 'Configuration' menu changed * Added a submenu 'Video Mode' in the 'Configuration' menu (see screenshot). -60Herz, 480p, 720p, 1080i * Added the command 'GotoVideoMode_2GAM' for the 'Configuration' menu.
Installation: You can NOT install this patch with the ftp server of the dashboard. Xbox360 Logo? *updated*
>> Here's something that we received today ... real or fake, I don't know, but I guess it could be the final Xbox360 logo, or maybe not ;). Note how the fonttype of the "XBOX" text is the same as the one used at the end of the MTV commercial for the Xbox360 unveiling(see news) and also the same as on the Xbox360 design renders(see news) posted earlier this week. *UPDATE* There seems to be small difference in the font that might indicate this logo is a fake. The leftside end of the middle horizontal line of the "B" is different on this logo. It's fully vertical here, unlike the "B" on the xbox design render and MTV ad. The green 'circles' aren't new either for those who have been reading all the Xbox360 news lately. You might have seen this 'ring of light' before on the flash intro of the Xbox E3 Kickoff Celebration registration webpage and on the MTV TV-ad. The guys over at TeamXbox had an article about this 'ring of light' some time ago you may want to read too.
