Gridplane Releases Early NXE Mock-ups
>> From gridplane.com:
[QUOTE]
Gridplane spent a few months working with Microsoft's XBOX 360 group developing concepts for the latest graphical user interface for the XBOX 360 console.

The time was spent exploring many ways that a new menu system could allow users to browse and navigate game libraries, music, movies and TV shows. Oh, and play games too. In addition to the menu systems, we dreamt up an immersive 3D environment for users to explore the latest games, events and online activity within the XBOX Live community.

These examples represent one of many concepts that we worked on. We are happy to have contributed to the evolution of the XBOX console UI. The new "XBOX Experience" debuted in November, 2008.

Gentoox Home v7.1 and Pro v5.1
>> ShALLaX released new versions of Gentoox Home(info) and Gentoox Pro(info):
[QUOTE]
It seems that Home v7.0 has an issue with its /etc/fstab file where it tries to mount /dev/hda2 instead of the loopback file when booting from E or F drive.
Pro v5.0 has symlink issues in /usr (from the old days of XFree86).

As promised, here are the new versions of Home and Pro editions. You can read about the Home version Here and the Pro edition Here.

Thanks to those who reported the issues with the Home edition! Remember, feedback is important to me.

EncodeHD 0.96 beta
>> Dan released a new version of EncodeHD, an application to re-encode all types of video files for use on your home media player [like Xbox360] or on-the-go device. It aims to provide a simple interface with no fuss. From dcunningham.net:
[QUOTE]
It's taken a while longer than I had hoped, but I've finally gotten most of the outstanding issues resolved - thanks to a wonderful group of testers (special mention to David, Keith, Zach and Alan for all the work done!).

Download is available in the EncodeHD section of the site, and here's what's new since the last release:

NEW: Apple iPod Touch, iPod Classic, iPod 5G, and Sony PSP support
NEW: Output for TV option on all iPods will optimise video for display on TV, instead of the iPod screen
NEW: Command-line options /LOWPRIORITY and /HIGHPRIORITY changes the encoding process priority
NEW: RM filetype added to filemask
CHANGE: Removed Quality slider. EncHD now chooses the best quality / size based on the input file and target profile
CHANGE: Huge overhaul of the device filtering framework. Thresholds should be properly limited across all files now, so no more unsupported file messages (hopefully!)
CHANGE: Massive internal code restructure and refactoring
CHANGE: Disabled Bug Reporting for the moment until I can figure out a better way of doing this
CHANGE: First run of every version will display the About Box
CHANGE: Improved debugging info
CHANGE: UI Cleanup
CHANGE: Updated FFmpeg to SVN Build 16573
CHANGE: Updated MedaInfo to 0.7.9
CHANGE: If bitrate detection fails, fall back on the nominal and then overall bitrates. This should a number of issues with file detection
FIX: Advanced flags like "-map" failed, due to a parameter sequencing issue
FIX: Aspect Ratio was not being maintained if the output device was restricting the resolution
FIX: 4GB+ File Splitting 4GB sometimes didn't work or could create thousands of video segments
FIX: 4GB+ File Splitting wasn't cleaning up temporary files
FIX: Cancelling the encode wouldn't cancel subsequent actions
FIX: During encoding, the ListView wasn't scrollable
FIX: UI drawing on startup wasn't very smooth

I've put a lot of work into this - so if you feel it's a worthy app, please consider donating to keep the project alive! I know I know, it's a recession and all that - but I do have hosting costs to be covered

Xbox Live is 'Proverbial Gold Mine' for Netflix, says Pachter
>> From gamedaily.com:
[QUOTE]
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes there's a great synergy between Xbox Live and Netflix. He estimates that over eight million Xbox Live Gold members connect to the Internet in their living rooms and are "a click of the mouse away from becoming Netflix subscribers."

He estimates that 800,000 of these Xbox Live households were already Netflix customers when the streaming service debuted and as many as 200,000 of these customers joined Netflix in the last half of the quarter. This has obviously been a great boon for the video rentals company, and Pachter doesn't expect the trend to slow down any time soon.

"...we think that subscriber growth will continue at super-normal levels for quite some time. We believe that the Xbox Live Gold membership is a proverbial gold mine of potential members, and expect to see as many as 1 million join as Netflix members in the next year," he said.

Before cutbacks, RandD soared in Microsoft Entertainment Division
>> From techflash.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft was pouring research-and-development funds into its Entertainment and Devices Division at an accelerated pace in the months prior to announcing last week's layoffs, according to the company's latest regulatory filing. The numbers may explain why that division appears to have been hit hardest by the cutbacks. They also show how abrupt the company's financial pullback has been.

The division -- which includes Xbox, Zune and Windows Mobile -- reported an increase of 37 percent, or $251 million, in R&D spending in the six months ended Dec. 31, the first half of Microsoft's fiscal year. That translated into $929 million for the first half of the year.

At the same time, Entertainment & Devices remained a relatively small contributor to Microsoft's bottom line, bringing in a mere $329 million in operating profits over those six months, compared to the more than $6.2 billion brought in by the Windows division in that period.

XBMC for Xbox SVN rev17349 build - T3CH
>> T3CH released a new SVN compile (rev17349) of XBMC for Xbox(info).
This T3CH-compile is a complete snapshot of what is in SVN at the time the build was compiled, with just a few small additions.

Special Notes and Noteworthy/XML/Script changes:
* Due to the slowed down development in the Xbox branch, I will no longer release new SVN builds as often as I did before. So I will still build (the best) new XBMC SVN builds for Xbox but just on an irregular basis.
* Check out the full changelog since the December 30th 2008 Svn Rev16762 build here

Keep in mind this is a SVN snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.

New Gentoox Releases: Home v7.0, Pro v5.0, Resctoox v6.0, Sparkle v4.0
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
[QUOTE]
Well, it's been about 21 months, but here they are... the "You're still doing this?!" releases. I don't really know if there's any demand for Gentoox anymore, but I figured I'd put these out there just in case people do still use it.

Home edition has been upgraded to Gentoox Home(info) v7.0, Gentoox Pro(info) to v5.0, Resctoox(info) to v6.0 and Gentoox Sparkle(info) to v4.0. You can grab the downloads from the Downloads section.

The Readme for Home v7.0 can be found here: Home v7.0
The Readme for Pro v5.0 can be found here: Pro v5.0
The Readme for Resctoox v6.0 can be found here: Resctoox v6.0
The Readme for Sparkle v4.0 can be found here: Sparkle v4.0

The major features are:
Fully synchronised software (both with magic and portage as of a few days ago).
Ditched RAR file format in favour of tbz2 (file sizes are slightly bigger, but it's free!).
Nifty installer progress bar.
Updated Busybox in all initrds.
Ditched KDE, only XFCE is available now (KDE was way too bloated).
Upgraded to latest 2.4 series kernel.
Switched Home edition to use -Os due to CPU's tiny cache (Pro still uses -O2 as this will give better number-crunching performance)
Removed deprecated packages and replaced with modern equivalents (XF4VNC => X11VNC, GAIM => Pidgin).
Loads of other tweaks...

But what about MCE v2.0? Well, rather than delay all other releases, I decided to put everything else out while I rework MCE. The new version of MCE will take quite a while to finish (I haven't even started yet), but the main feature will be bringing it inline with the other distributions whereby installation can take place natively or in a loopback FS.

So for now, enjoy these releases. They may take a while to spread to mirrors, so if your download doesn't work initially, please try again later!

DVDKey32 v0.8.1
>> Team Jungle released a new version of DVDKey32, a win32 app that extracts the drive key from the Lite-On 360 drive via serial cable.

What's new/fixed:
* Since the release of ix1.5, and the fact that orignal drives are now being erased, the potential for lost keys has risen. It's been shown that the serial interface is prone to minor errors. As parity is not used on the link these errors are impossible to trap. DVDKey32 will now do multiple extractions of the DVDkey for comparision. Hopefully, extracting the key multiple times should account for any glitches.
