Team Xecuter: Dual-FW mod, FW Patch Mod, USB to ODD/HDD Adapter and more
>> Team Xecuter(info) sent us some news about some of their upcoming products.

* They designed a dual firmware for the Xbox360 DVD drives. This will not be an Xecuter-branded product however (they just made it 'for fun' for those who want it, but installing a dual FW mod can be pretty complex):
Here is a picture of the dual firmware [DVD] mod we said we'd design to give out to people who wanted to use this kind of thing as the current designs were a bit shoddy in our opinion - it also includes an external LED status module. This wont be an "official" Xecuter product as such and will be very cheap to buy without compromising excellent build quality.
Xbox-Scene
* They also gave us a bit of info about upcoming Xecuter-branded products, including a DVD firmware 'on-the-fly' patch mod and more:
The "official" Xecuter 360 [DVD firmware 'on-the-fly' patch] mod is in progress and will be much more user friendly with the main focus on addons and upgradeability. A shout out to Commadore4Eva - none of the ODD mods would be possible without the excellent developments he has given the scene, we take no credit for any of this, we just want to make his work easier to implement.

We have also intergrated our USB to ODD [Optical Disk Drive] adapter with the HDD version also so its an all in one and you don't have to buy a seperate HDD USB product saving you $40+. Currently supports flashing / reading Hitachi drives 100% in Windows - Samsung is proving a little tricky - not decided yet whether to release a Samsung version seperatly to expedite the release - more news soon on that shortly.

To give you an idea of how busy we are we currently have 5 new Xbox 360 products in progress :)

Xecuter can also confirm that we have begin heavy investigation into homebrew on the 360 - it's looking more possible each day - who knows what can happen over the summer - no promises but it's the area we prefer and if it can be done it will be done.
While we're talking about Team Xecuter ... you might have noticed they said on their website they sent us 50x Xecuter 360 Connectivity Kits for a contest/give-away. Well, we have these prizes in our possession already (see image below). We're just finishing a few things for the give-away/contest, so keep your eyes on the x-scene news in the next few days!

MC360 dvd2xbox and UnleashX Skins Released, XBMC Skin Update
>> Team BlackBolt released a version of their MC360 skin (an X360 reproduction skin) for dvd2xbox(info) and UnleashX(info). They also posted a news update for the XboxMediaCenter(info) skin:
* MC360 dvd2xbox & UnleashX skins now available!.
Head over to the downloads section to download the skins, they both come in a variant of Default 360 theme and also Carbon theme. The Glass themes will be out in a week or so. These skins where created by a member of Team Blackbolt that started out as a Golden Ticket winner, offered to help us with the Unleash-X versions and then became a fully fledged member of the team! I think you will all agree his work on these skins and also his work for the main XBMC skin has been great, well done Jezz!

* Next XBMC MC360 Skin Release and Superman Theme News.
Its over a week since our last update and since then a new version of T3CH was released. We decided against releasing a newer MC360 this week due to some new issues and also some new features that where added to XBMC. Firstly a new function to help skins was added which caused some adverse effects in our skin, so they had to be corrected, then there were some new features added to XBMC, which we must keep secret for now. So I can tell you we should have a new updated version of the skin after the next T3CH, which will be the most jam packed amazing version of MC360 out to date, so look for that begining of next week. Onto the Superman Returns theme, not a wallpaper pack, but a full theme. I am nearly finished with it, but because of the England Vs Portugal match tomorrow, it wont be completed until sunday night. So expect it sometime around sunday. Other than that, keep the forums alive with your ideas, help with bugs and our new Wallpaper and customisation sub forum. There is also a new Language Sub Forum where people can help translate MC360 strings to other langauges. We are always working on the skin, we are also taking some new members into the team to help with more productivity and some new ideas, so MC360 will remain alive for a long time yet. And remember ;), Donating is a great way to show support for the skin. Its the end of the month now so if you can donate just a little it all helps. We thank you greatly.

Microsoft will NOT release an Xbox360 with Internal HD DVD *Updated*
>> *Update* Well ... another false rumor ... the guys at the Team Xbox GamerScoreBlog officially debunked the story of an Xbox360 with internal HD-DVD:
Saw a few stories online about an Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD drive: not true. We have no plans to release an Xbox 360 with an internal HD DVD. What we showcased at E3 was an external HD DVD drive, and we're sticking with that.

We've always had a games-first emphasis with the Xbox, but some consumers can build on the platform - like by adding a Windows Media Center Edition PC. By keeping the drive external, we're offering consumers a choice in creating their own hi-def experiences. So: no plans for an internal HD DVD.
Original (incorrect) article from itwire.com.au:
According to the general manager of Toshiba Information Systems Division in Australia, Mark Whittard, the high definition video war between Toshiba's HD DVD and Sony's Blu-ray formats will spill over into the games console market within months.
"One looming potential war extending from this is the Xbox versus PlayStation," says Whittard. "The Xbox is coming out with an HD DVD player towards the end of this year. With Microsoft's marketing engine behind HD DVD, who knows what will happen."

The Xbox 360 is coming out with a HD DVD player? This is news to us. We were under the impression that there would just be a HD DVD plug-in available.
"I would imagine that there are plans in place to put an HD DVD drive internally in future revisions of the product," says Whittard. "They're not speaking about it publicly at the moment but I would expect them to do that and fairly soon."

Analyst: Xbox 360 To Keep U.S. Lead Through 2009
>> From gamasutra.com:
For 2007, IDG predicts Microsoft dominance for the next two years in the North American next-gen game hardware market, at least in terms of installed base. The forecast predicts 10.6 million consoles in homes for Xbox 360, 6.8 million for PlayStation 3, and a modest 3.5 million for Wii in 2007. In 2008, Anderson suggests 15.5 million units in homes for the 360, 13.5 million for PS3, and 6.8 million for Wii. He does mention that his group expects the PS3 to win out in the installed based race in the end, perhaps in 2009.

IDG also analyzed multiple console ownership, and found that there was a decent amount of crossover, with many homes owning more than one console. With the next generation, Anderson predicts more single console ownership, with most households choosing either the 360 or the PS3, and with most crossover happening when those households also chose to pick up a Wii.

He then went on to outline data on marketshare, bringing an end to the intriguing presentation. For present-gen consoles, the Xbox is at 25%, the PlayStation 2 at 56%, and the Gamecube at a 19% marketshare, according to IDG.

LED Fader 360 - Installed Picture and Video
>> Xboxexpert (x-scene forum moderator) installed the 'LED Fader 360' Ring-Of-Light mod on his watercooled Xbox 360.
From xboxexpert on forums.xbox-scene.com:
LED Fader 360:
A device created specifically for the Xbox360. It will slowly fade the ring of light around the power button in and out while the Xbox360 is off. You can attach it to either the primary green or secondary red colors. In addition, you can connect up to 10 additional LEDs to it which will fade in sync with the front ring of light and turn on solid once the Xbox360 is turned on. It is a very simple install and for only $10, is the perfect add-on for a beginner or an advanced casemodder.

Install Picture:

Video:
What is the Led Fader 360?
It is a small and simple mod that makes your ROL (Ring Of Light) on the XBOX 360 fade in and out in a breathing fashion. It will simply connect to a few points on the RF-board on your 360 to make the excisting LEDs fade, no extra components needed. The schematics and the source code is open so you can build one yourself or order one from sickmods.net for a small fee.
In addition to this, you can connect up to 10 additional LEDs that will fade in sync with the front ring of light. When you turn your system on, the ring of light stops fading and the system takes control like normal, and the 10 additional LEDs stop fading and turn on solid.

XNA Framework tidbits...
>> David Weller, the Community Manager at Microsoft's Game Technology Group, posted some XNA Framework tidbits on his blog:
It's no secret that I'm pretty excited about what the XNA Framework will offer game developers. It's all about allowing you to build games that will run on both Microsoft Windows and the Xbox 360 platforms, while simplifying the development process. Because the XNA Framework is based on the .NET Framework, many developers that are already using the Managed DirectX libraries will find it very familiar. However, there are a few changes that you should be aware of:
1. D3DX, as it exists today, will no longer be present in the XNA Framework. However, many of the features found in D3DX are being integrated into different parts of the XNA Framework. Microsoft will publish a migration guide to help developers coming from the Managed DirectX world.
2. The XNA Framework will work, by default, in a right-handed coordinate system. Yes, you read that correctly. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a heretical concept at Microsoft. DirectX, for instance, has been able to work in either a right- or left-handed coordinate system for years now, but defaulted to left-hand for historical reasons. The XNA team decided to use a right-handed system by default to align with accepted practices in the mathematical community.
3. DirectSound will be replaced by a managed version of XACT (Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool). The good news here is that XACT is already available in the DirectX SDK. In addition, I'll be publishing a brief "Introduction to XACT" article in this blog sometime next week.
4. DirectInput will be replaced by a managed version of XInput. Just like XACT, the XInput library can currently be found in the latest DirectX SDK (in fact, there's a managed version available in the 2.0 Managed DirectX libraries)
5. There will be no references supported to System.Drawing and System.Windows.Forms. The XNA Framework will provide font and UI features instead.

Xbox 360 Cooling Comparo
>> From hardocp.com:
Since the introduction of the Xbox 360 there has been a plenty of debate and forum discussion on the topic of overheating Xbox 360s. The days following the launch of the Xbox 360 were filled with non-stop media coverage of a few highly publicized console failures due to overheating. The truth of the matter is that console failure rate, as reported by Microsoft, has been well below the average for other major electronic devices but the initial spotlight placed on overheating consoles has spawned a whole market segment devoted to cooling Microsoft's new console.
Whether or not there is a problem with the Xbox 360 overheating, the truth of the matter is that there are enthusiasts that will choose to use aftermarket cooling on their consoles and it is our job to test these cooling products.

The Contenders:
* Nyko Xbox 360 Intercooler
* Pelican Fan Stand

Cooling Conclusions:
The Fan Stand and the Intercooler are very different products vying for the same consumer audience. While the Nyko Intercooler provides better cooling and can be used in both upright and horizontal positions, the fan noise is well above that of its competitor. The Pelican Fan Stand, while quieter than its opponent, doesn't cool as well as the Intercooler and can only be used in the upright position. The stability claims made by Pelican were never substantiated by our testing and, if anything, the Fan Stand added no stability to the Xbox 360 and would only provide a greater height for your console to fall from if it were tipped over.

Our Thoughts:
The Nyko Intercooler was my personal favorite while Chad and Justin both had stronger feelings for the Fan Stand. Personally I liked the compact size of the Intercooler and the ability to use it in the upright position as well as the horizontal position. I also enjoyed the fact that the Intercooler turned off and on automatically with the console. Justin and Chad saw the benefit of the Fan Stands ability to remain running after the Xbox 360 was shut off to help cool down the console even after it was powered down. The Fan Stand's almost silent operation was also a big plus when compared to the rather noisy Intercooler.

The Future of Japanese Xbox 360 Gaming
>> From xbox360.ign.com:
Unlike the original Xbox, Microsoft built the Xbox 360 as a worldwide gaming hardware unit. Different than its first box, the Xbox 360 was forged with careful planning, whether we're talking about aesthetics, technical capabilities, or the potential wealth of software from American, European and Japanese developers. While Bill Gates' company was unable to capitalize in any significant way with the original Xbox on the Japanese market, Microsoft surprised everyone with its big catches for Xbox 360, from Square Enix to Q Entertainment to Mistwalker's Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Then the system launched in Japan. Nobody would have dreamed the Xbox 360 would sell worse in Japan than the original Xbox. With Peter Moore, Microsoft's executive vice president of interactive entertainment, heading efforts in Japan, corralling developers and wooing big-name designers over to the Xbox 360, things seemed bright. With Square on board with Final Fantasy XI, with Q Entertainment's Tetsuya Mizuguchi lined up, with Capcom, Tecmo, Flagship, and Namco on board, man, you would have thought that Microsoft had all its ducks lined all in a row. On paper, and for all intents and purposes, it had. Yet, the Xbox 360 launch in Japan was an unmitigated flop.

Given the soft launch on December 10, 2005 -- replete with weak games (did anyone really need to play Ridge Racer 6? Tetris...a launch title? And the unimpressive Every Party), the delay of Dead Or Alive 4 -- and less than 100,000 units sold through by January 2006, Microsoft has found itself in a bind. This particular bind is both short and long term. In the short run, Microsoft's Japanese launch showed little reason to buy the system, and most gamers, publishers, and analysts saw that the surprisingly poor performance as a potential problem. But game sales change everyone's minds. If the system could just get enough good games on retail shelves, the sleek, off-white Xbox 360 could perhaps gain that all-important foothold it needs to be a truly successful worldwide console manufacturer.

Microsoft's Xbox marketer Di Cesare Warns 'Evolve or Die'
>> From next-gen.biz:
Di Cesare, the man responsible for marketing the Xbox 360 talked at length about falling TV viewing figures, and how that is impacting games messaging.
Di Cesare noted how we're "shifting from TV to the web." He then quoted advertising mogul Donny Deutsch: "Advertising will change more in the next 5 years than it has in the last fifty."
"evolve or die," he added, urging game marketers to "embrace a mix of alternatives. That doesn't mean the thirty-second spot will go away. I think it will be a pillar of your media mix."

He explained the Halo 2 launch. "The overall strategy was something we called: Feed the Core, Captivate the Masses." Microsoft treated the launch like a blockbuster film.
Di Cesare also talked about the underground campaign: ilovebees. "The interesting thing with ilovebees is, from a PR point of view, we never acknowledged its existence," he said.

Xbox exec reaffirms Microsoft's commitment to digital distribution
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Xbox Live Arcade boss Greg Canessa has reaffirmed Microsoft's commitment to promoting online distribution as games get more expensive to produce and traditional genres begin to disappear.

Speaking at the Hollywood and Games Summit, Canessa said that Microsoft's executives "are big believes in online distribution", highlighting the success of Xbox Live Arcade.
According to Canessa, XBL was at least in part developed because "Games are getting more expensive to produce... And the great game genres are disappearing."

Canessa then turned to the subject of episodic content, which Microsoft plans to release for games such as Grand Theft Auto IV. According to Canessa, episodic content is the "natural evolution of digital distribution."

Hacking the Original Xbox: An Email From The Older Days
>> From Dean Takahashi on mercurynews.com:
I don't know what's happening inside Microsoft right now as they deal with the latest attempts to beat the security. But here's a snapshot of what they were doing within days of the release of the original Xbox in 2001. The message comes from Jon Thomason, who was then head of Xbox software. This email didn't get to me from Thomason.

From: Jon Thomason
Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2001 3:53 PM
As you probably know, there's a pretty dedicated effort to hack the Xbox. because information on these attempts tend to be distributed across a number of different places, you might run across information about hacking attempts that hasn't been seen yet.

When you find information of this nature, I encourage you to send factual mail about the hack attempts, including links, to the Xbox Security Response Team alias. The short name of the alias is 'xsrt.'
What I do NOT want you to send is any attempt at a legal opinion about what you have seen, or any proposal of action. Just the facts, please :) An example of something not to send would be, "wow, the hack-my-xbox.com guys are desoldering ROM chips, that's a huge violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we should sue them!" Instead, just send the link and comments about what you read and try not to make conclusions other than technical ones about the viability of the option described (or potentially the humor in it: my favorite was the guy who said he was going to write a tool to modify the contents of the Xbox hard disk...he is a self-proclaimed VB programmer and had figured out the IP address of the Xbox and would 'soon' have the tool).

Those on the response team will solicit appropriate legal advice as to what to do with any threats.

Also, I want to make it crystal clear that it is NOT YOUR JOB to clear up misconceptions on newsgroups. I take violations of this principle very seriously. You should not make specific comments about hard disk size and layout, about any details of our security system--no matter how innocent it sounds--or any other details. You can give out hints about how to beat Halo on Legendary, but let our 'expertise' and 'superior knowledge' expressed in public end there.

Xplorer360 Beta 5
>> A new version of Xplorer360(info), a tool to read/write on your Xbox/Xbox360 HDD and Xbox360 Memcard, has been released. What's new/fixed:
* Datel Driver support! Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 memory cards that use Datel's xbreader.sys / usbio.sys drivers should now work fine.
* Full / Improved Xbox 1 memory unit support - multi-media block transfers used, great speed and compatibility boost.
* Drag and Drop support with windows shell.
* Improved Backup / Recover functionality.
* Bug that sometimes prevented backups from being recovered to their original drive fixed.
* Xbox 360 drive recovery now skips config sectors. The Xbox 360 hard disk drive has a unique signature in its starting sectors that would prevent standard SATA hard drives from being used in the Xbox 360 console, based on the sector count and serial number, among other things. This also prevents the use of different images on drives with different serial numbers. Xplorer360 now skips these sectors, so that data can be exchanged between drives without disabling 360 compatibility.
* Improved file / folder rename functionality.
* Improved Xbox 360 hard disk drive detection.
