Xbox Manufacturing Process Pictures Explained
>> Michael Steil of Team Xbox-Linux posted a new article explaining the Xbox Manufacturing Process. The pictures used have been posted here on the news long time ago already, but Xbox-Linux included some interesting comments/info next to some pictures explaining the Xbox manufacturing process and how the factory operates:
The purpose of this page is to comment and explain what can be seen on these pictures. The pictures have obviously been taken at the Flextronics factory in Hungary, which produced 1.0 Xboxes from October 2001 to April 2002. This is the factury in Sarvar/Hungary, which manufactured everything except for the actual board logic, which had been made in the Zalaegerszeg factory. The TSOP has probably already been flashed at Zalaegerszeg; but the EEPROM will be written by XMTAXBOX during hard disk duplication.
There are at least these four rooms: * case manufacturing * four assembly lines * hard disk duplication * component storage
Itagaki Speaks: X360 pricing, hard disks, wide screen support and LCD hate
>> Famitsu Xbox 360 (the #1 magazine in Japan) has a new interview with Tomonobu Itagaki, the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden developer of Team Ninja. The guys over at xbox360.ign.com have an english article of what he said:
Itagaki is first asked to comment on the Xbox 360's Japanese price, which, with tax, just manages to squeeze in under the 400 dollar mark. Itagaki states that he wishes the price were a little lower, but this is his stance as a game maker and not a gamer. For the gamers, who play games as a hobby, any price would be okay if the system's capabilities and software lineup are good. Given a lineup that appeals to gamers, the overseas price of the system and the price of past systems don't matter.
He suggests standard CRT over other types, devoting a lengthy rant to his displeasure with LCD televisions. Itagaki states that Team Ninja has "flagship class" LCD televisions throughout its offices, and he's not impressed with any of them. The problem, he states, isn't so much with response time, but with inaccurate color. Combine that with the high prices, and he comes to the conclusion: "buying a CRT is, as a gamer, a wise choice."
"Without a hard disk," he explains, "it's difficult to do things like the Ninja Gaiden Hurricane Pack. There are also problems with caching." He suggests that smooth startup sequences for games would be difficult. Also regrettable, he states, is that, minus a hard disk, he won't be able to manage sound in the way Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball does now, where music is copied over from the game disk.
Blu-Ray Attacks Microsoft, Microsoft Bites Back
>> From slashdot.org:
"Ars Technica has been following this week's next-gen DVD dramas closely. First, there's extensive coverage of the reasons why Microsoft backed HD-DVD, which was primarily inspired by mandatory support for copying discs to computers. The BDA, however, countered with an attack on Microsoft's reasons, and Microsoft returned fire. Richard E. Doherty, Microsoft's head of the media entertainment technology convergence group, said that 50GB Blu-ray disc are in fact many years away. Is MS playing games, or is Sony misrepresenting just how far along BD-ROM really is?" From the article: "HD DVD is proven to deliver 30GB capacity today, with the potential to deliver even greater capacity. The 50GB claim for BD-ROM discs is unproven and will not be available for many years to come, based on discussions with major Japanese and US replicators. Replicators not only do not have test lines running, they cannot even pre-order the equipment to begin evaluating this disc. They cannot judge the cost of these discs, or even whether they can be manufactured at all. Major replicators can mass manufacture 30GB HD DVD discs today and it's well understood that these discs will cost significantly less to manufacture than the lower-capacity 25GB BD discs."
Bach: Half of 360 users will use Xbox Live
>> From gamespot.com:
Bach confirmed that currently, only 10 percent of Xbox owners--some 2 million users--subscribe to Xbox Live. With the addition of the free "Silver" version of Xbox Live, Bach believes that about 50 percent of the console's owners will go online via the 360. However, they will still have to pay to play games online via the new Xbox Live Gold.
In terms of games, Bach confirmed that Microsoft will be announcing its launch titles for Europe in the "very near future." Bach revealed that Microsoft and Square Enix are planning an extremely large-scale beta test for FFXI. It will be so large, in fact, that Bach said anyone that buys an Xbox 360 should be able to participate.
>> From punchjump.com/next-gen.biz:
Piper Jaffray, a financial consulting firm, estimates that the Playstation 3 will outsell the Xbox 360 and Revolution by 2008. While the Xbox 360 is expected to have a 5 million unit lead on the PS3 in 2006, it is estimated to drop to 500,000 in 2007, and be eclipsed by 2.5 million units in 2008. Xbox 360 Hitting Japanese Colleges and Osaka Games Festa
>> From 1up.com/1up.com:
* The Games Japan Festa 2005 in Osaka event (November 12th and 13th) hopes to pave a smooth path towards the upcoming Japanese Xbox 360 launch on December 10th. At the show, there will be a total of 80 playable games, though obviously the entire lineup isn't Xbox 360. The reason Games Festa will be a more important show for the Xbox 360 than TGS is two-fold. For one, with the launch looming, it will be Microsoft's last chance to reach out to the Japanese media and public. Secondly, many displayed games should be in near-finished states. At E3 and TGS, next-generation games have been tough to judge.
* Hoping to inform college students and the public about Xbox 360 next-generation gaming, executive officer of Microsoft Japan Yoshihiro Maruyama will be giving a free lecture on October 7th at the Tama Campus of Chu-ou College in Tokyo. The theme of Maruyama's lecture is "Xbox 360 and HD Entertainment." In the lecture, Maruyama will discuss Microsoft's vision of the three pillars of HD Entertainment: Hi-Def, Online, and Customization. In addition, Maruyama will also be speaking about Xbox 360 and Microsoft's future post-launch vision.
China will get Xbox 360 in 2006 - Microsoft expects sales growth
>> From reuters.com:
Microsoft Corp. expects to chalk up another year of more than 30 percent sales growth in China and plans to sell its new Xbox 360 game console there next year, a senior executive said on Wednesday. The world's top software firm, which engineered a series of strategic acquisitions in the world's seventh-largest economy this year, aims to carve out a bigger slice of a $20 billion software market that has grown almost 40 percent annually between 1999 and 2003.
Chen said he hoped to start selling the console in China in 2006, but stressed that the timing of its launch was not set in stone. Sony and Microsoft now manufacture many of their game consoles in China, taking advantage of lower labor costs. Microsoft bought more than $1 billion worth of Xboxes from contract manufacturers in China last year.
But the country has yet to take off as a market for game consoles. Sony began selling its PS2 in China in 2004, acknowledging piracy issues but arguing that someone had to take the lead. Yet the technology giant has said little on the subject since, with analysts saying their plans have been waylaid partly by pirated games that sell for as little as 10 yuan apiece. Nintendo never bothered to launch its own console in the country.
Origen Xbox 360 More Than Meets the Eye
>> From TeamXbox.com:
After some tinkering around TeamXbox has uncovered what Microsoft really has in store for Europe, and it's much more than 2 spots at Origen. The game has just begun, round one anyway.
Over the course of the weeks to come in October gamers in Europe will have at least four more chances at a trip to Origen, as the game plays out through rounds two and three. Furthermore, it seems as though there will be one lucky grand prize winner taking home the gaming rig of all gaming rigs, worth 10 grand! The 10 grand could be dollars, euros or franks for all we know, but a gaming rig worth 10 thousand anything sounds like a nice deal. At the least we expect an Xbox 360, an HDTV, and a 5.1 surround system.
After looking through http requests made by the flash that makes up the Origen Xbox 360 website, it became clear that all the dialog between the rabbits is stored in an xml file. The xml is very long, and some of it consists of error messages, link titles, and a lot of other very useless text. Instead of making you sift through all of it, we've summarized all the good stuff ... [read more]
DXpatch v1.0 - make games compatible with DreamX 1480
>> From los93sol1 on forums.xbox-scene.com/readme:
A few days ago Elupus was doing some debugging to figure out why XBMC's DVD Player was having issues with my DX-1480. In the process of debugging we got to talking about the box and Elupus inadvertantly discovered a hack to make games compatible with the DX-1480. I've tested it with all the games I have and it has worked with a 98% success rate.
Thanks to Lysip for helping out with the patch utility built with CodeFusion's generic byte patching engine. If any developer's would like to experiment more with this hack, please get in touch with Elupus or me...I'd love an option to enable this hack in the final X3 bios, I think it would compliment my chip nicely wink.gif At any rate I will host the file on my personal FTP server for now, but if anyone would like to host this for me...that would be cool.
* What is this: A patch to make games compatible with the DreamX 1480. * Why do you need it: To patch games for the faster processor so they run at normal speed and playback smoothly. * Overview: For those of you wondering what a DreamX 1480 is, it is a modded Xbox from Friendtech with 1.4Ghz processor and 128Mb RAM upgrades. These boxes were originally created to run Linux and things of that nature, they yielded some serious compatibility issues for playing games. Basically game developers hardcode the games to the internal clock speed of the original processor (733.33Mhz) since they know every Xbox manufactured will have the same hardware components. The problem here is that the DreamX is twice as fast so when games are hardcoded for the slower processor, they will run twice as fast, have choppy video, etc. Lots and lots of problems result because of this. Until now owners of these Xboxes haven't been able to play most of their games due to this problem plaguing the DreamX. this patch fixes that. Testing showed that 98% of games tested played normal after applying this patch. The best implementation of this hack would be at bios level so it could patch xbe's on-the-fly and from discs. I have hopes that some of the modchip teams will pick this up and run with it since it is a fairly simple hack. If any developers have an interest in going a little further with this please contact Elupus or me and we can supply you the details of what the patch actually does.
Microsoft and Intel to Support HD-DVD
>> From betanews.com/nytimes.com:
Microsoft and Intel are expected on Tuesday to pledge their support for HD-DVD, the next-generation DVD format created by Toshiba. Microsoft had previously remained neutral in the standards war between HD-DVD and Sony-backed Blu-ray, as the company's VC-1 Windows Media Video codec will be included with both formats. The companies said they had not ruled out incorporating Blu-ray technology in their operating systems and on their chips in the future. But they are convinced that as of now, the HD-DVD format discs can be produced more cheaply and more quickly than the Blu-ray discs, and are therefore likely to become the dominant technology. "We were neutral for a long time," Jordi Ribas, the director of technical strategy for Windows at Microsoft, said. "But we're approaching the time when this has to come to market and from our standpoint, the earlier the better."
In the end, copyright controls may have been the deciding factor for Microsoft and Intel. As the two companies push out more Media Center enabled PCs, the movement of protected content around the home becomes an important factor. Blu-ray will include advanced watermarking technology that favors standalone consumer electronics devices by requiring authorization codes built into the hardware to access content. Such security features could make it difficult for consumers bouncing video from a PC to a TV, or those streaming content between networked computers.
Microsft Newsletters Hint at OrigenXbox360
>> Another update about the origenxbox360.com teaser site. Microsoft Europe has been sending a newsletter over the weekend with information like launch date and price of the Xbox 360 in the EU. At the bottom of the mail there's a small image showing 2 rabbits ... and it's linking to origenxbox360.com - another hint to this teaser website operated by Microsoft, but there are still no real details about what this website is actually about. It does not link directly though, but via a server (xbox.vmteu.com) of vertisinc.co.uk, what looks like the advertising company behind this 'viral marketing campaign'. The links looks like this: http://xbox.vmteu.com/xbox/live.asp?e=2290&l=67835&r=xxxxxxxx From a quick look at the several newletters people forwarded us the e-variable stands for the country, the l-variable for the language and the r-variable seems unique in each mail (probably something like Xbox newsletter registration number).
Click image for full view Also note that the timer on the website is coming to an end tomorrow - September 27th at twelve o'clock; midday. As the timer uses local PC time it's unknown when the site will exactly update, but we should know more during the day.
