Xbox 360 SATA Hard Drive Connection
>> 360sata.com will release a small PCB that will allow you to connect your Xbox 360 HD to your PC (via SATA and a simple four pin Molex power connector) without opening the HDD bay.
From 360sata.com:
The final pricing will be:
Adapter with connectors solder on. $20 + shipping.
Adapter with connectors in package so you can solder them on yourself $17 + shipping.
If the companies that we have been talking to come through, you will see this product sold on major websites.
Pictures of the latest non-final prototypes:
Xbox-SceneXbox-Scene

I was testing the new version of Xplorer last night aviable at 360Gamesaves and I used my new adapter. It made it really easy to add some content to the drive and then just snap the drive back in the 360 without having to put the HD back in its case. I did this about 30 times last night.
Also I have made my little tweaks from the last prototype and the final design is finished.

FAQs (partially, view them all here)
Q: Will this void my warrantee for my Xbox 360, or my warrantee for my Xbox 360 hard drive?
A: No, this will not. With this device you will not have to open your Xbox 360 Hard drive.

Q: Will this let me upgrade my hard drive size?
A: Not currently, but hopefully in the near future, we will have acquired the key to create our own hard drives for the Xbox 360.

Q: Can I use this to load backups on my hard drive or rip games?
A: No, this device is only for accessing data on your hard drive.

Q: Where can I buy one?
A: Check our trusted resellers list. The resellers located on this list are official resellers of this product and the only places we would recommend buying the device from.

Q: Wait... How do I get the files off? Or add files? I'm totally lost here...
A: Well, you could code your own application to access the data off the hard drive, or you can use Xplorer360(info)(info) which is located at www.360gamesaves.com

Q: I only own a laptop and I don't have a sata port on it, how can I use this adapter?
A: You can either use a USB-to-sata converter that you can find on the web, or you can sue a PCMCIA card. Check out our tutorial section for places to buy both.

Q: Will you be shipping around the world, or do I have miss out on this product?
A: As of right now we are only shipping to the USA and to the UK once we get enough emails from users over there to cut down the shipping costs. DON'T WORRY, we haven't forgotten everybody else. We are currently working with some world wide distributors to make this product available to everyone at a fair price.

Q: Will this product include a plastic case, or is it just a PCB board like your photos on the product page?
A: It is just a PC board, but don't worry it does have to protective silkscreen to protect the traces. A PC board will work great, and allows us to bring the product to you cheaper. A few months from now we might add a plastic case, but that will also raise the price.

Q: So how do you hook this up to your PC once you insert the adapter into the 360's hard drive?
A: You have to have a sata port on your PC. You can either have one built onto your motherboard, you can use a sata PCI card, or you can use a USB-to-Sata converter. Check out our tutorial section for information about theses different ways to hook it up and places you can buy them. For power you just need a regular four pin Molex power connector, like you would most likely find plugged into your internal Cd-Rom or hard drive inside your PC. If you do not have a free power connector, they make y-splitters so you can add another one to your system setup. Check out the tutorial section for places to buy these. You will need one with some length on it as you most likely need to pull it outside your case along with a sata cable to hook to the 360-to-sata adapter to make unhooking and hooking your 360 hard drive up quick and efficient.

Why the Xbox 360 Supports HD DVD
>> From the Team Xbox GamerScore Blog:
After reading Sunday's New York Times (requires registration), I really wanted to find out a bit more around HD DVD. So I sat down with some folks working on Xbox 360's upcoming HD DVD drive*, and asked: Why HD DVD? Why not Blu-Ray? (for the purpose of this post, I'll lovingly call it ‘Beta-ray')

I found out a few interesting things on why we're so confident of HD DVD:
* Price. One company out there has a $1,800 Beta-ray player (no release date) - one that doesn't even play CDs! For 1,800, you could get a $500 Toshiba player, and about 40 HD movies.
* Industry support: Looks like the pendulum is swinging back in HD-DVD's favor. As an analyst quoted in the article says: "It's only a matter of time before people start backing out of the Blu-ray camp." If that's the case, it might be because of. . .
* Beta-ray's own difficulties: Microsoft had serious doubts around the technical feasibility and pricing of Beta-ray for some time and our fears now seem well founded. Sony is hinting PS3 will be delayed because of Beta-ray, and that's with Sony driving the Beta-ray standards. If even Sony can't get it to work right, it raises lots of questions. A little reported fact (and one that the New York Times was confused about) is that the first Beta-ray discs will actually hold less: only 25GB compared to HD DVD's 30GB. That means less room for high definition extras and interactive features, which HD DVD says they fully intend to support.

So there you have it. A few more reasons why HD DVD is poised to win. Thoughts?

* Fully animated backgrounds, buttons and effects

More about Microsoft's Origami: No Handheld Xbox, Connect to 360
>> Here are 2 new articles about the Microsoft Origami, we talked about it here previously. The articles do not really give the same info, so I share them both with you.
The origamiproject.com has been updated too ... not really more info except a date, March 9th 2006 (probably when MS will release official info), and a slogan/hint: "I am everywhere you are but never in the way".

From gameinformer.com:
Microsoft supposedly has very high hopes for the system, even going as far as calling on the portable tablet to "replace the laptop." It is said to be compatible with Windows Vista, but we don't yet know if Origami will actually use it as an operating system or just use its own.

One of the biggest eye catching moments seen in the Origami video was a running version of what appeared to be Halo. We've learned that this isn't just the PC or Xbox disc slid into the back. Origami will apparently run its very own proprietary gaming software, and a Halo port will most likely be one of the first titles released.

Perhaps the most interesting gaming feature, however, is Origami's ability to connect to Xbox 360s. Once connected to a 360, presumably through the USB ports, Origami is expected to function as a second screen for compatible games. One example we heard specifically focused on a game in the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter vein. While you're TV is displaying the main game, the Origami could show the first person view of another player to help with tactical planning. Or the Origami screen could display an overhead view of the battlefield from a flying probe. Sports games could use it for play calling in football games or the 24 second shot clock in basketball games. And remember, we're talking about a touch screen here, so Origami could function as a controller as well as a dedicated screen. These are just a few of the many possibilities unlocked by such a setup. Let's just hope if this all comes to fruition that Origami's connectivity doesn't crap out like Game Boy Advance's.
From next-gen.biz:
With the AP's report today, at least some of this speculation about Microsoft's "Origami Project" can be mostly put to rest. The article clearly states that, again, according to the AP's internal source who is "close to Microsoft", the device isn't an iPod-killer, isn't a mobile phone or regular PC replacement, and lastly, it's not a portable Xbox.

Instead, the device is reportedly the first in a series of "ultra-portable" computers that will be capable of running the standard Windows XP operating system. The platform will be manufactured by a variety of computer makers, and might sell anywhere from $500 to $1000.
The report states that "The computers will generally be less powerful than full-fledged PCs", although their strengths will lie in general tasks such as photo editing, GPS, watching movies and checking e-mail. Apparently, the device will initially not have the advanced capabilities of Windows Media Center.

Transition Nightmare: Who is to Blame?
>> From next-gen.biz:
This wretched transition is being dubbed 'worse than 2001' which, as you may recall, was no stroll through the daffodils.
The bad news is that the worst of it is probably yet to come.

Analysts are not, by nature, outlandish blowhards. They look at numbers and attempt to speculate likely outcomes. They are cautious in their optimism as well as in their pessimism. If they are saying it's bad, then it's got to be really bad.
If the game industry were a national economy we'd have quit talking about Recession weeks ago. Now we'd be talking Depression. Large touchstone companies are routinely turning in disappointing financials. They are shedding significant numbers of people.

So what's gone wrong? And who is to blame?

"Halo" on Iris Mod for PSP
>> From DCEMU.co.uk:
I have finally have gotten to the point where i can show some in-game screens... i still have to do some character editing ( have to get the full version of milkshape...just bought a brand new guitar ) but right now if i get a good soild week to myself...i can fix them.

The textures...and i know they aren't perfect...but i am trying... are taking time ( due to the fact that i cant seem to have a the real textures up....they seem to only show certain colors if i do a straight port of them... )

Still havent added the Pistol... but that will be soon... once i get the model done it will be easy to put the weapon in

Oh...there is one problem though... Since i added all these new textures and the models being huge and all, i have suffered a massive chug with a 4 player dm game.... so i am still trying to figure out a way to solve that problem

anyway...here are the screenshots... tell me what ya think.

The Blue Laser Wars: Episode I HD DVD
>> TeamXbox has a great article, including lots of technical info and details, about the upcoming 'next-gen DVD war':
VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc, iPod, MP3, Mini Disc, JVC, Sony, Philips, Apple...the consumer electronic industry has seen many format wars over the years with clear winners and losers.

Here at TeamXbox.com we actively cover the video game war, but the next big fight for dominance that consumers will soon witness is the one for the successor to the DVD; a war that promises to be bigger in scope than the battle between Microsoft and Sony for the next generation of video games, and could even affect it to the point where proclaiming a winning format could determine if one chooses a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360.

Now that Microsoft chose a side, giving full support to HD DVD on Windows Vista and announcing an external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360, we thought it was time to talk about HD DVD and Sony's own next-generation DVD format, Blu-ray Disc.

But whether we are talking about Compact Discs, DVDs and these successors to the DVD, it is important to understand that the difference between them is just technological (as a consequence of the time they were created and the applications they were designed for) and all these optical storage formats share a common principle that must be understood before discussing Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

NeoGenesis v17
>> Xport released a new version of NeoGenesis(info) a Sega Genesis/Megadrive/32X/SegaCD/MegaCD emulator for Xbox.
What's new/fixed:
* GUI brought up to date with most recent
* Removed "Fix Screen Tearing" configuration option since it is no longer being used
* Added option to manually disable SRAM to fix games like Puggsy
* CDDA plays within BIN files now. You must have a proper CUE file for the BIN and it must be named the same as the BIN file. (e.g. MY_SEGA_CD_GAME.BIN and MY_SEGA_CD_GAME.CUE ) Load the CUE file - not the BIN file.
* BIN files that are actually ROM images and not SegaCD images should correctly load as cartridges now.
* Added Reset to in-game menu and also as a configurable button
* All settings will be reset to a baseline when you start this version. This will remove the default mapping of BLACK to the screenshot button and will also default the Left Analog stick to act like the DPAD during gameplay. However, any games you have previously played will have their button configurations loaded from the previously saved config file and will override the new defaults.

Analyst: 10-12mln 360s by Year-End
>> From next-gen.biz:
Analyst P.J. McNealy with Amtech Research said in a report today that Microsoft is on track to sell 6 million Xbox 360s by the end of June, and 10-12 million by year-end.
The mid-year forecast is greater than Xbox boss Peter Moore's January predictions of 4-5.5 million sold by the end of June.

Amtech and McNealy also conducted a survey involving 125 retailers last week. Twenty-six of them had Xbox 360 units in stock, although all but five of them only had the non-hard drive Core units. Stores that did have the $400 Premium Packs late last week sold out of units very quickly.
The report still said that stores with consoles in stock only had a paltry 1-3 units each, with only two of the surveyed stores having decent stock; one with 10 Premiums, and one with seven Premiums and six Cores.

Microsoft's Origami Project
>> From next-gen.biz:
As speculation floats around about a Microsoft handheld games and media device, a web video and a cryptic website indicate something new is coming...

The new gadget, currently called the "Origami Project", was touted on marketing agency DigitalKitchen's website, although the footage seems to have been removed since. Microsoft is one of DigitalKitchen's clients.
The device shown on DigitalKitchen looked like a downsized tablet PC capable of web browsing, GPS functionality, photo editing, messaging and perhaps most notably, gaming; Halo was shown running on the device.

Microsoft apparently launched a website set to reveal details on March 2 at www.origamiproject.com. It doesn't reveal much at all quite yet.
While DigitalKitchen's footage is no longer available, you can view the Origami prototype in staged action by visiting YouTube.

Two pieces up in the media right now talking about problems with the Xbox 360. Games.net has an overdramatically title piece, Five Ways to Save the Xbox 360. The article lays out ways in which Microsoft should revamp the console and its games in order to truly dominate the next-gen war. Meanwhile, a 1up editorial asks the question Is the Xbox 360 Hurting the Games Industry? The article looks at the ways in which Microsoft's console was rushed out the door, and the negative consequences that may have on the industry as a whole. From that article: "More important, though less remarked upon, is that the Xbox 360 was also launched before the industry was ready. If you pay attention to companies' end-of-year financial reports, which I'm sad to say my job requires me to do, one thing that stands out in the postholiday reckoning was the statement, again and again, that the Xbox 360 launch had hurt sales across the industry."
