Sony Brings Linux for PlayStation to US
>> Sony today announced plans to release the first supported version of its "Linux (for PlayStation 2)," dubbed Release 1.0. A beta Linux kit was made available in Japan last July in response to requests by the Japanese Linux society. After an overwhelming positive response from the community, Sony decided to publicly release and support the development kit. Release 1.0 will go on sale beginning in May for Japanese customers and debut in June for the United States and Europe. The kit will retail for $299 USD ($215 in Europe) and include a 40GB hard disk, 100 Base T Ethernet interface, Linux Kernel 2.2.1, XFree86 3.3.6, USB keyboard and mouse, and a computer monitor adaptor. The kit will only work when connected to a monitor - not a television.

Xbox Online Interview
>> The interview centers around the Xbox European launch but probably the most interesting stuff is in some answers about the online network, Square and if Xbox is going to drag on Microsoft's profits.

Online Network
I have more engineers working on online on my team than I do working on the hardware. They've been working on online [for Xbox] now for 18 months.

(...) broadband providers hear what we're planning on the backend of they say, "This is the killer app".

Over 30 percent of people that own Xboxes have broadband (...) The early adopters of Xbox are the early adopters of broadband, which is great. You do the math, you have 1.5 million with Xboxes, so around 500,000 of them have broadband, or something like that.

Sega has committed to doing its sports line online.
We'll be doing our sports line online as well.

We don't see the need to put a Web browser on Xbox.

Manufacturing:
The reality was that we were far exceeding 100,000 [a week] before the US launch.

The real challenge is going to be ramping up for the holiday season. Frankly our biggest worry is that demand has exceeded supply by too far a margin so far so we really have to bring more manufacturing online.

We're in the works of doing that now and every day we're extending the capacity of Guadalajara and Hungary.

We brought Hungary online during the US launch and some of the units actually came over from Hungary.

Miscellaneous:
We've got 250 games in development right now.

We think we can have 6.5 million (Xboxes) by the end of our fiscal year worldwide. The end of our fiscal year is June.

The software attach rate actually surpassed our expectations: we sold 3.2 units of software for every console sold, which is an unprecedented success.

I'll say about that is that to play Final Fantasy XI on a PS2, you have to go buy a whole bunch of stuff, and they may not be able to sell as many copies as they want to.

We still have money in the bank. [Everyone laughs] We still have other products that sell really, really well, and frankly we're not thinking about Xbox doing anything else other than fantastic.

Xbox Gets 6 Week Head Start in Europe
>> The final round of releases for consoles was announced as Nintendo finally put to rest the rumours about the European launch date of GameCube - naming May 3 as the big day, giving Xbox a six week head start. The European launch of the GameCube completes the release cycle of the latest generation of consoles pitching Nintendo's latest offering against the Xbox, which has a European launch of March 14, and Sony's PlayStation2 which has been on the market for almost 18 months.

Nintendo said on Monday it expected the GameCube to have a European pricepoint of about €249 ($215) making it the cheapest of the three consoles, and about half that of the Xbox, which is expected to be priced at about €479.

After a series of cuts from its launch price PlayStation2 is now selling at about €300.

Microsoft announces music partnership
>> Microsoft has announced an agreement with the band Linkin Park to promote the Xbox on the band's upcoming tour, Projekt: Revolution. Recognizing that neither audience wants to be overmarketed to, Microsoft has said that the promotion will only involve Xbox logos on T-shirts and cross promotion between the Linkin Park and Xbox Web sites. In addition, the band will sign several Xboxes that will be given away at radio stations located in cities on the tour.

"We're huge fans of the Xbox," Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson said. "We've been playing it since before it came out, and we're excited about the opportunity to include the Xbox in the first Projekt: Revolution tour."

The Projekt: Revolution tour starts on January 29 in Colorado Springs and ends February 24 in Las Vegas.

ATA-100 Speed Gain Fake ?
>> Several weeks ago websites told cd ripping was faster if the normal IDE cable of the Xbox was replaced by a 80pin ATA-100 cable.
This has been checked by someone on the xboxhacker forums , and he found no speed gain at all while ripping cd's to the Xbox HD.
This could be logic 'cause the Xbox uses ATA PIO transfers, not Ultra DMA transfers which require the 80-pin cable, so there can be no speed gain from an ATA/100 cable normally.
It could be that those previous sites a special method , but nothin' has been proven.
