Resctoox v1.6
>> ShALLaX released a new version of Resctoox(info):
This time the e-drive and f-drive scripts work! They were broken in v1.5 because I decided to add nano to Resctoox... this resulted in there not being enough space to decompress the initrd meaning the script failed. This time, the scripts decompress the initrd in place rather than moving it to /tmp first... The native script has also been tweaked to prevent errors during partitioning... long story short, it works now and is tested!
XLink Kai: Amaryllis Situation Resolved *updated*
>> From TeamXLink.co.uk:
I'm happy to say that after a short discussion, www.nullriver.com have agreed to make a number of changes. This makes Amaryllis fit perfectly with the Kai(info) philosophy for development :)
As you know, nullriver is a commercial software house - and as such, giving software away completely free all the time is.. well.. not in their best interests. This was conflicting with Kai's "free without nagging, bitching or ads" policy - something which we feel strongly about and have refused to budge on for the last 2 years. Anyway, the changes have been made, and everyone seems to be happy. nullriver politely ask on their website that anyone who uses and gets enjoyment from the new 0.982 Amaryllis offer a donation to further its development. I think we can all agree that $5 is especially cheap, considering the quality and completeness of the product. Kai must, at some point, embrace commercial developers. We can "protect" our userbase as much as is humanly possible - but if faced with having no native OSX UI, and having one which the author politely requests a small donation for, I'm sure as hell not going to have no native OSX client.
The new Amaryllis client is available on http://www.nullriver.com/index/products/amaryllis - enjoy.
Gentoox ALSA v1.0.8 Update

SmartXX LT OPX Review
>> Here is the hardware review for the SmartXX LT OPX modchip. Once again blame me for the delay ... but I install modchips many times before writing a review and sometimes this takes a bit more time then it should ;). A SmartXX Pro/Lite software review is in the works and other hardware reviews are also coming soon!
Where to buy:: USA and Canada: BMMods.com, Extreme-Mods.com, Divineo.com Europe: FreakWare.com, Divineo.co.uk Rest-Of-World: Divineo.cn
Official Website:: http://www.smartxx.com
Review:: The SmartXX LT OPX (SmartXX LiTe One Point siX) is the little brother of the SmartXX v1/v2 modchip. It's a generation4 modchip aswell as the modchip comes with it's own OS, a 'lite' version of the SmartXX OS(info).
This is the default SmartXX LT OPX package. You get the modchip itself, a pre-cut pre-stripped wire for the D0/LFRAME point, a pinheader and a SmartXX case-sticker.
As we are used to see from SmartXX, the build quality is once again very good. While the modchip 'feels' a bit less solid then its big brother (probably because the PCB is thinner - done so it doesn't touch the case when you fit the modchip at the backside of the motherboard), the finishing is on the same high level as the SmartXX v1/v2. The modchip also comes with a 1 year warranty (nomatter where you buy it from) which confirms SmartXX's own confidence in their product. As you can see the shape of this modchip is somewhat special. This is because the modchip can be directly 'quicksoldered' on the back of a Xbox v1.6(b) motherboard. That's also the reason the SmartXX LT OPX has a 'break-off' headerpin, as it's too high when installing the modchip on the back of the motherboard.
Installation: * PinHeader: Nothing special to say here, it's a typical pinheader install. For the D0/LFRAME wire you get a pre-stripped wire that you have to solder on both ends: modchip and D0/LFRAME motherboard point. Special is that D0 (xbox v1.0-v1.5) and LFRAME (xbox v1.6(b)) have different pads on the modchip. Difference is that it's not grounding LFRAME. While no real problems arise when grounding LFRAME Team SmartXX has found it's safer not to ground it all the time and therefor decided to make a separated pad for it. * Wire-Install: There are pads on the modchip if you want to install it using wires. No plug or wires are delivered with the modchip, so this means you will have to cut, strip and solder each wire on both modchip and xbox motherboard. So unless for some reason you really want a wire install I suggest you just do the headerpin install on Xbox v1.0-v1.5 and QuickSolder install on Xbox v1.6(b). For D0/LFRAME the wire-install uses the same separated points as explained above. Freakware also told us the modchip has been specially designed so wires can easily be 20cm long without causing any problems (they even tested it successfully with wires of 40cm). I did not test this myself. * QuickSolder v1.6(b): You probably already know the "LPC repair PCB's" ... well the SmartXX LT OPX is a repair LPC on it's own. That's great for all Xbox v1.6(b) owners. The modchip has tinned holes on the PCB so you can place the modchip on the back of the Xbox motherboard and (quick)solder the modchip directly on the motherboard. So no need to do a headerpin install and then using a LPC repair PCB or repair the points manually with wires (where you have to cut/strip and search for each point manually). Was also a good idea from SmartXX to put the solder pads for the LCD addon and external switches on the border of the modchip so that they stick out of the Xbox motherboard border. So this makes these points accessible from the top side of the Xbox motherboard aswell.
* Solderless v1.0-v1.4: There is no solderless adapter made by SmartXX yet (althought they plan to release one soon), but the SmartXX LT OPX works fine with any universal solderless adapter. Pin4 of the headerpin is internally linked with D0.
The Modchip::
More Pictures: * SmartXX LT OPX from another angle * SmartXX LT OPX back of PCB
The flashchip is 1MB and comes pre-flashed with the legal linux based SmartXX Lite OS. This OS is 256KB and is based on the full SmartXX OS used on SmartXX v1/v2. This means you will have 768KB left to store your own Xbox bioses on. Word from Team SmartXX also told us a possible 2MB version of the SmartXX LT OPX will reach the stores soon. The SmartXX LT OPX has a highspeed and secure QuickLogic FPGA syscon. While for the end-user this only means it's a quality/solid controller, it also means the chip is very hard to clone. So this also means endusers will most likely never end up with a low quality clone chip.
As the modchip comes pre-flashed with its legal OS, once installed you can directly flash all bioses/kernels you want on the chip. You can flash from a file on the Xbox HD or CD/DVD and if your xbox is connected via network with your PC you can flash using a handy web interface or using SmartXX' remote flasher program (win32) aswell. More details about the SmartXX Lite OS will be posted soon in a SmartXX OS review. An OS upgrade seems to be safe as it uploads the new OS in 2 steps, the old OS build will only be replaced by the new after the upgrade-procedure checked the newly flashed OS is OK.
There are lots of solderpads on the modchip for external (optional) addons: * It's possible to connect an LCD screen with the modchip. It can be used in the SmartXX Lite OS and in XboxMediaCenter(info) and maybe later in more homebrew programs. There are solderpads for all the points you need for an LCD screen. For the constrast control there's no pot (trimmer) on the modchip like on the SmartXX v1/v2, but there are solderpads to install a constrast controller yourself. * Quatro I/O bus solderpads for eventual future upgrades. It's a fast external port that could be used for many things. For now there's no addon released using it. * Soderpads to install an external status led * Solderpads to install external switches for 'hard' bios bank selecting
POSITIVE:: + Cheaper + Good value, probably modchip with most features in its price category. + Works with universal solderless adapters on Xbox v1.0-v1.4 + You can 'quicksolder' the modchip directly on the back of an Xbox v1.6(b) + Very good build quality + Has many external 'ports' to install bank-switches, leds, lcd and a generic 4x I/O. + Pre-flashed with own made, linux-based legal 'OS'.
NEGATIVE:: - All external 'ports' are solderpads, no easy plugs.

President of Famitsu gets Private Xbox2 Demo
>> From xbox.ign.com:
Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy creator who's now developing 2 RPGs for Xbox2) gave Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain and one of the most respected names in the Japanese videogame scene, a private first look at a video of the game in motion. Hamamura had this to say about the experience: "It's such a realistic video that with just one look you'll know that you're looking at a next-generation system. It's something that cannot be realized on today's machines." Hamamura offered an example of what's possible on the next generation Xbox: "It's possible to show a camera outside the Earth's atmosphere approach a forest on the Earth's surface, then show leaves on a tree one at a time." Xbox2 and PS3 at GDC next week?
>> More rumors about where and when the Xbox2 and PS3 will be shown to the public for the first time. From Spong.com:
A timeline of PS3 progression was shown a year ago by technology and business lead Ken Kutaragi which showed the PlayStation 3 hitting in what looked to be March of this year. Two independent sources claimed to SPOnG that Microsoft is also planning to break its E3 embargo, showing the Xbox 2 at some point in March.
And what happens in March? Why, the annual Game Developers Conference of course, in San Francisco between March 7-11 inclusive. Given the above evidence, SPOnG believes it highly likely that both the PlayStation 3 and the next generation Xbox will be on show in some form next week.
Xenochip Clones: Orginals don't have Winbond flashes
>> From xenochip.com:
We do not use Winbond flashes! We have had some complaints about Xenochips with Winbond flashes lately. We have NEVER manufactured any chips with a Winbond flash! This is not our product and should not be confused with the chips we make. There are several chips being sold under the name "Aladdin" and we do not claim any rights on this name, actually the original Aladdin was sold as a "franchise" to several parties. So please go ahead with your own chips and call them "Aladdin-whatever-you-want" but don't use the names "Aladdin XT", "Aladdin XS", or "Xenochip".
So if somebody sells you something with a Winbond flash and calls it "Xenochip" you should ask for a refund.
Halo 3 In the Works, Set To Crush PS3 Launch?
>> From Zonk on games.slashdot.org:
IGN has an article claiming to reveal a few rumours from around the industry. The most interesting of these rumours is the possibility that Halo 3 is in the works already, and what's more is being targeted at the PS3 launch date in an effort to undermine Sony. From the article: "The release of Halo 3 at the precise launch of PS3 is a pure, military tactical move, similar to the PS2's greatest lineup ever launching simultaneously with the launch of the Xbox and GameCube. It's designed to counter Sony's upcoming launch with the best weapon Earth has on its side, Master Chief."
Gentoox MCE v1.2 *Update: Released*
>> ShALLaX will released a new version of Gentoox Media Center(info). From gentoox.shallax.com:
It's about time I did some work on this...
28 February 2005 - v1.2 + Xbox v1.6 support. + Removed Gentoox installation portion. If the user wishes to install Gentoox, it can now be done as a normal Gentoox installation. + Removed BIOS flashing (user can do this manually if needed). + The installer now places gentooxx.xbe in "E:" + Successful installations dont halt, they reboot instead making them fully automated.
Since Home and Pro are no longer integrated, all references to MCE have been taken out of magic. Magic wont touch MCE at all just as MCE wont touch Gentoox. For v1.6 support, I've had to upgrade ALSA meaning no more optical support! I'll look into this at a later date, but for now I have way too much work to be doing at university and I just want to get this out of the door for some testing/feedback.
*Update* The new version has now been released.

Power cord: Microsoft denies soldering problems
>> BetaNews.com investigated the power cord issue which has been discussed here, here and even on the forums. BetaNews states:
To its defense, Microsoft denied any reports of power supply or soldering problems. In a statement to BetaNews, Microsoft reiterated the purpose of the recall was a "precautionary measure" and done for safety reasons.
"The replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures. The cord this consumer received is designed to shut off power to the Xbox if it detects an electrical condition called 'sustained overvoltage.' This rare condition can be caused by things like downed power lines in a wind storm or faulty wiring in a house," a Microsoft spokesperson said.
As to the issue of different sized replacement power cords, Microsoft said "not all cords that we supply to program participants will look the same. Which type of cord is shipped depends on the date the console was manufactured and the country where it is used."
Modding Mayhem 2005
>> from ModdingMayhem.com:
Modding Mayhem 2005 - Atlanta Edition was a success!!! Our second get together was even better than the first. The event was hosted this year in Atlanta, Georgia. We had a total of 8 people show up for the event. Before I get too much into it I would like to thank ALL of our sponsors:
Xbox Scene Xbox-Scene.com - Without you guys there would be no Modding Mayhem... many thanks also go out to the people of x-s for their knowledge and helpfulness as that has a hand to play in making something like MM possible.
Mad-Modder Mad-Modder.com - is another sponser that was key to making MM a success. No_Remorse worked extremely hard pulling this event together. Mad-Modder provided custom jewels to all attendees.
Xtreme Enterprise e-linksoft.com - Many thanks to Xtreme Enterprise for providing everyone with colored controller-s shells. These shells are top quality and of the same craftsmanship as the original shells. Their sponsorship provided for half of the mods done at MM this year! Look in the pictures to see stuff we did with the awesome shells.
Team Xodus TeamXodus.com - One of the original sponsors pulled through for us once again to provide everyone with their very own Xenium Ice chip. Much thanks to the guys at Team Xodus for providing these awesome chips for us to enjoy.
BMMods BMMods.com - Thanks to BMMods for providing everyone with SmartXX v2 chips, Debian CDs, and USB Adapters. SmartXX is an awesome chip and can be found for sale at this top notch web shop. BMMods comes highly recommend for their critically acclaimed customer service, support, and awesome prices.
Warped Jewels WarpedJewels.com - Chon_Lee at warped jewels was an attendee at MM who brought custom controller jewels for every one to enjoy. Definitely check out WarpedJewels.com for a growing selection of domed controller jewels. You can also submit your design to be made into a customized jewel. Check out WarpedJewels.com and the pictures of MM to see how they were the perfect addition to complete our Controller-S mods.
Now...on to the highlights:
Atlanta local, DeAdGuY, took off work Wednesday to prepare for Modding Mayhem, and like a scene from a reality TV show everyone trickled in over the day. Chon_Lee and Doubble07 rolled into town Thursday around 2pm. The three of us went a few hours later to pick up No_Remorse at the airport, followed by a trip to the liquor store. Pizza and beer were the delicacy of choice that night. Leftyfb and Metalb00 arrived around 2am Friday morning. That night was mainly spent relaxing and talking about the trip there and the excitement that would pursue over the next couple of days as well as ideas for mods each of us wanted to do this weekend. As we sat around and picked each others brains you could see light bulbs go off in everyone’s head about what more they wanted to do to their Xbox hardware that weekend. We also hooked up some Xboxes to brag to people on Xbox Live. This went on till around 7 a.m. After a few hours of sleeping we all went to IHOP for breakfast and No_Remorse got his coffee fix in. After breakfast we all went to shower and do all that kind of stuff. Hey, at least it was a clean Modding Mayhem. Anyways, it was a pretty settled day until lookformeb and AliveByFate met us at Applebee’s for the Mad-Modder.com sponsored dinner that night. Now everyone was here and Modding Mayhem was in full force. The rest of the night was spent on Xbox live making everyone jealous that we were all in the same room and having a blast and planning for the mods that we were going to do the following day. Saturday morning is when the major modding began. Modding ranged from switching controller cases as well as lighting them, hooking up crouch switch mods, installing chips, installing and lighting Mad-Modder jewels, fixing non-working boxes, and Chon_Lee's awesome LCD mod he mounted in the top of his box. The rest of the night was spent on Xbox live as usual. Sunday was spent with people leaving at various times with later stories coming in of Leftyfb and Metalb00 getting stuck slowly driving home in a blizzard and No_Remorse getting stuck in an airport overnight during a lay over also due to bad weather. Finally every one made it back home safe and sound.
Each time we host a Modding Mayhem it gets a little bigger and a little more exciting. Stay tuned for the next edition of Modding Mayhem...the series (Well maybe it isn't a series but it sounded good). Until next time check out the pictures from this year and last year as well if you happened to miss those at ModdingMayhem.com "slow" and XS Mirror. Also feel free to read and post any questions or comments in our thread on the forums here at x-s.
Again thanks to everyone that makes Modding Mayhem possible and such a huge success. We all appreciate each and every one of you. We look forward to growing and continuing the Modding Mayhem experience and encourage others to do the same.

There are many many fixes and improvements in this release including a completely overhauled ftp and http system giving a sustained average speed of at least 10mb/s in all our bench tests. As you can see from the changelog there are many improvements to the skinning system and also various fixes and changes as requested by our users.
The X3 bios is the most powerful available in the scene today and we will further reiterate that fact with the release of X2 Config Live in the next week or so.
For now here is the changelog of 3029: * fixed: DVD model ID * fixed: Selecting empty skindir no longer crashes * fixed: Speeded up ftp uploads by quite a bit, averages over 10mb/s on large files * fixed: Made entering the bios a bit more flexible so it has more time to init the controller * fixed: menu color is now correct according to skin assignments * fixed: tuned some XICS BIOS flashing timings to avoid frags. * fixed: Made the skinloader a bit more forgiving and informative on what's wrong * fixed: Many different script http-download issues, also made it capable of speeds up in the 10mb/s area * fixed: Speeded up scripting-unzip by deprioritizing display output * added: Added + and ' to the not approved filename characters in ftp. * added: New skin alignment 'N' ( means do not show ) * added: "hddCstatus" "hddEstatus" "hddFstatus" and "hddGstatus" skinsettings for individual drive display * added: Screenshot in fanspeed setup * added: Made a way around the filesystem limitation regarding renaming files with only case-differences ( Help => help )
>> A new version of FBAxxx(info) has been released. What's new/fixed: * removed superscale filter, it was crashing the xbox * fixed memory leak when changing menu or when no preview picture was in * fixed screenshot function * fixed fast forward message,... * changed cpu adjust speed menu to a menu where you can choose : * cpu speed * asm68K or Musashi 68K * use old vmm or new vmm * page buffer size * Page buffer size default is 256K, you don t need to change it, the emu might crash when changed * Old VMM is the one from lantus (with fread, fseek and fopen) and new VMM from manto (createfile, setfilepointer and readfile), I optimized both of them but there are still some sound glitches, I let you choose which one you want.
