Chameleon News: 25USD till 8May
>> From http://www.xodus-chip.com/:
As usual we have set the standard for the next generation of development kits. Our baby, has taken a very long time to come to market, we accept but we assure you it was well worth the wait. The development of such a complex device which incorporates many features never even dreamt of by our competitors, took many months of strenuous testing and debugging. We are confident that some, if not all of our first time features will soon be followed by others, in an attempt to come close to what we are currently offering.
To tell the truth, we have out done ourselves. We initially set out to make a simple one meg device with one or two simple features like bank swapping. We then started adding new and innovative ideas, until eventually we ran out of space, said "hey what the heck", doubled the capacity of the controller, and carried on adding features and innovations.
Apart from the many software features incorporated in the Chameleon (some of which have yet to be fully understood and utilized) there are also some unique hardware features, such as Logically correct installation points, transistor controlled (buffered for safety reasons) D0, A15 and LED lines, multiple installation methods, including Quick Solder LPC header specifically designed and implemented to make the life of the installer easier. We also thought of the installer when it comes to the multiple installation methods, where we specifically mirrored and inverted the D0, A15, Eject and Power points on both sides of the Chameleon so as to save that extra minute ;). Finally but not least, we opted for our signature claim of including on the unit an ultra bright Blue LED , The LED can be used for many reasons, but mainly for a quick and easy way to ensure all is okay . Since the control of the LED is via software, we simply implemented a small self diagnostic function into our custom made Linux bios so as to monitor the status of the console. So long as the blue LED remains flashing the unit is alive and kicking , insert your CD when prompted and boot Linux , or due to the currently dynamic nature of the development of the Linux system, use our "ground-breaking" Auto update feature, which enables you to easily upgrade the current bios, to a newer more stable release.
Now down to the business side of things, this past two weeks we have done nothing other than respond to the thousands of enquiries for wholesale pricing of the Chameleon. The demand for bulk supply of the chameleon is far, far greater than we ever imagined. So much so, that we have been seriously cornered. Our initial promise to our faithful customers was a device at around 25 USD that would extend the life of their hard earned Matrix. This price, (as was clearly pointed out by members of our competition), did not for one second take into consideration wholesale orders. Remember, we have always been focused on single non-tech consumers, hence the birth of Matrix!!! The ugly news is that this massive demand for wholesale has prompted us to rethink our pricing structure. The good news is that we will stick to our promise for all our loyal fans out there so we will keep our original price until the 8th of May, after which the Chameleon will be reselling for 39 USD, including shipping (USA, Canada, and EU) from our main reseller Easybuy2000. All orders received before the 8th of May will be honored at 25 USD as promised. According to our manufactures the first batch of units should be out within 3-5 days from today. This simply means that if you want a good (very good) price for your Chameleon Get It Now.
A complete wholesale pricing structure will be drawn up and sent out with in the next week, therefore making it easier for our customers to purchase the end unit from multiple outlets.
In the next few weeks we will be updating our site with the manuals and guides.
Order it now for the 25USD price before it goes 39USD! Expected shipping date: 9 May 2003

Review: Replacement Lens and Smartjoy-X USB Adapter
>> Replacement Lens and Smartjoy-X USB Adapter (for Xbox) review 03 May 2003.
We received a Thomson Replacement Lens for Xbox from Lik-Sang.com (Pacific Game Technology (Holding) Limited).
This replacement lens will only work in the Thomson DVD drives - so don't try to use it on Samsung or Philips drives. I opened my DVD drive , unplugged the flat cable , removed a small plastic 'thingy' on the backside of the laser and removed the 2 screws so I could remove a bar and get the laser off. No idea if this is the 'official' way to do it , but it worked fine for me.
Closed it, and I tested if by chance it was any better then the original thomson lens. I tried alot of different media , and my conclusion is that it's still impossible to use cd-r's , dvd-r's read at the same level then the normal thomson lens and cd-rw and dvd-rw are working better on this replacement lens. Ofcourse this was tested without tweaking the lens pots ... If you tweak your drive you can get better performances, but that's done at own risk. Also note that original Xbox disks still work without any problem. If xbox disks can't be read on a PC DVD drive it's because of the firmware and not because of the lens. If you destroyed or over-tweaked you original lens , this is what you are looking for. For more information/order: Lik-Sang.com
We also received a 'Smartjoy-X USB Adapter for Xbox':
This is a high quality cable that allows you to connect any Xbox controller to your PC. So the fans of the big controller can now use it on their PC too. You can use 3rd party drivers from grooveyardfunk.com or codeunderground.com to make your Xbox controller fully working on MS windows. For more information/order: Lik-Sang.com

New Release: Gens-X v0.10 and NeoPop X v0.10
>> Hikaru released a new version of his Gens and NeoPop port. What's new/fixed Gens-X:
* Fix Sound * Add Country change
The version I previously released on my bulletin board didn't directly affect the emulator itself, only the menu.... I think it's great that Xport even managed to support CUE files and original CD's in his emulator.
What's new/fixed NeoPop-X:
* Many Fixes * Add Setup of sound quality * Add Setup of sound Volume * Add auto frame skip
Currently the emulator doesn't contain a turbomode. That's because it's unclear to me how speed is adjusted in the emulator internally. This will probably be my last update if no bugs are found in the current version.
xISO xFER
>> L!M!T , the original author of xISO xFER asked us to post this information:
Someone named 'Andrew' has been poppin' out releases of something he calls 'XISO XFER PRO'. As I have dedicated developers working on a new release of xISO xFER (the L!M!T version) I would appreciate if you could get a message out stating that these 'Andrew' versions are NOT approved by me. While you are at it, please also state that the 'official' xISO xFER (the L!M!T version) developers are Devenic (SyncX author) and Phiberz. Use the 'Andrew' versions on your own risk. His versions have zip/nada/nothing to do with me, Devenic, Phiberz or xISO xFER (the L!M!T version) except for some of the source. I am not saying there would be anything wrong with his versions or coding ability, but I just wanted to clarify things.
Major console price drops imminent in the USA?
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Sources at key US retailer Gamestop have indicated that a $50 price drop on all three major consoles may happen in the coming weeks, although it's not clear whether these are in-store promotions or official price cuts.
According to a source quoted on US console news site Consolegold.com, Gamestop stores have received promotional materials advertising $50 off each console - apparently confirming rumours that price drops to the consoles would happen before the E3 trade show in Los Angeles in mid-May.
These cuts would bring the GameCube to 99.99USD (89.61EUR), and the PS2 and Xbox to 149.99USD (134.42EUR). In other words, all three consoles would be available for under 400USD (358.48EUR) - a move bound to vastly increase the number of people owning multiple platforms.
New Release: N64X b1-sources
>> Hikaru released sources of his N64X development so far.
Translation (Jap->En) by Tycho:
* Graphics ?% * Audio ?% * Input 0%
I lost understanding of the former structure when I was changing the code, so I’m redoing it from scratch. It seems I’ll be able to get things to work faster by rewriting the graphics bit of 0.07b into DX8. It’s just that I’ve been having a hard time doing that, even though I know there’s a Nintendo 64 emulator for the Xbox that already pulled it off…
As there's a N64 emu contest currently running (more info), I uploaded the sources here too - so now one can pretend it's their code. Download Sources (by Hikaru): here

A month later, "Grand Theft Auto 3" and "Vice City" finish exclusive run on Sony's PlayStation 2 and will be available for Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube. Chameleon Review
>> We received a preview sample of the new Chameleon modchip yesterday! Here's my review.
Chameleon review 29 April 2003
Where to buy: * EasyBuy2000 (official Chameleon reseller) : $25 (PREORDER - worldwide shipping)
Official Xodus website: * http://www.xodus-chip.com
What's in the package: * Chameleon modchip * 2x6 headerpin
More pictures: front side2 , back side
What you need to install it: * a v1.0, v1.1 or v1.2 xbox * a TORX 10 and 20 * 4 wires (i used 30awg wires , like for PS2 mods) * Solder equipment
Install the Modchip: The modchip is preflashed with a special version of the legal cromwell 1.8 bios. What's special about this cromwell bios is that you don't have to use a 'ozxflash' disk (using raincoat). All you have to do is burn a disk with a 256k or 512k bios on it (give it the name LINUXBIO.BIN). Boot your xbox and wait for cromwell to fully boot. Then insert the disk you made , close the tray and it will flash your chameleon with the bios on the disk. (just wait for it to shut down the xbox) (cromwell directly flashing modchip). As you flash only 256k or 512k , even if you have a bad flash , you still have atleast 2 more tries. You can also use the Matrix programmer to flash the chameleon with a PC.
There are 3 ways to install the chameleon: headerpin , Xecuter1-style (pcb with holes) and as add-on to the matrix/xodus modchip. It's similar to any LPC modchip , the only difference is that chameleon has 3 extra points : + a15 to allows to flash TSOP (picture of d0 and a15 point) + E and P to control the eject and power button (used in chameleon mode4) (picture of E and P point) As far as I know these features are optional , so you don't have to install those wires if you don't need those features.
I installed the Chameleon with a headerpin (nice to have d0/a15/E/P point also on the backside of the pcb :))
Testing: There are 4 switches on the chameleon. The first 2 switches are for mode selection , the last 2 are for bank selection. mode1 = 4x256k mode2 = stealth 2x512k (stealth means it will boot from the first blank and directly after booting it will put the modchip to the 2nd bank) mode3 = 1024k mode4 = 2x256k and 1x512k. Mode4 also allow to use power/reset button to select bios: power = first 256k bank , reset = TSOP bios , power+reset = 2nd 256k bank. The 2nd bank is protected in mode4. With the last 2 switches you can select which bank you want to standard boot under the current mode.
I didn't have a single problem during the installation. Booted my xbox and the chameleon version of cromwell 1.8 booted (screenshot).! Inserted my CD with a 256k LINUXBIO.BIN file , and it flashed the first bank! EvolutionX will detect you have a chameleon modchip and you will have an extra section in the 'Settings' menu (screenshot). It shows what bank you are using and in which mode your chameleon is. You have to add a few lines to the evox.ini file so you can start swapping and flashing banks. Evolution-X 'knows' in what mode your xbox is , so only the possible options will be viewable. For example if you are in MODE1 (4x256) you will be able to reboot using bank1, 2, 3, 4 or with TSOP bios , same for flashing banks. If you select to boot with a new bank (screenshot) the xbox will reboot immediately with the selected bios. If you power off your xbox it will boot again with the bios selected by the 2 last switches on the modchip. EvolutionX now also offers to flash each bank separatly (for example in MODE1):
It's also possible to easily flash the onboard TSOP with the chameleon. It does need the special EvoX_MatriX_TSOP bios that currently only works for xbox v1.0 but word has it that a v1.1 and v1.2 compatible version should be out soon. All you have to do is boot your xbox with this special bios then 'flash bios' in evolution-X and the chameleon CPLD will manage everything so the onboard TSOP is flashed instead of the LPC modchip.
POSITIVE: + a price/quality and price/features level never seen before! + alot of modes for multi-bios setup: 4x256 , 2x512stealth , 1x1024 and 1x256 2x512 (1x256 protected) + possible to flash TSOP easily (only on v1.0 xbox so far) + use evolutionX to reboot xbox with different bank + you can flash the banks separately with evolutionX + 3 installation methods: you can choose the one you prefer :) + nice new legal and easy to use cromwell bios + bank can be flashed separatly with xbox software , so even if you have a bad flash , your other banks should still be working + cool bright blue led ;)
NEGATIVE: + flash protection only in mode 4 (2nd 256k bank) (it's possible to add a switch for enable/disbale write access though) + hardware boot from TSOP 'switch' only in mode4 (you can reboot your xbox from TSOP via software in other modes though) + if you use chameleon as Matrix addon you will have to cut 3 tracks on the matrix and you will have to solder 3 extra wires (a15 , P and E) if you want all features. (note that this is not bad considering the matrix modchip wasn't developed to work with this addon) + not so easy to move the switches when xbox is assembled , but it's possible!
Pre-Order your Chameleon! (25USD - Shipping WorldWide)

xINSTALL - Xbox Installation Wizard
>> From xboxmediaplayer.de
"xINSTALL - Xbox Installation Wizard" is a new Xbox open source (SourceForge) homebrew project. The plan is that "xINSTALL" will become the universal/standard installation & configuration wizard in the Xbox homebrew scene. The wizard should be easy to use for newbies and advanced users of Xbox homebrew software. The project is currently in the concept/recruitment stage and do not have any developers (programmers/coders) as of yet which is why I'm posting this this to ask if there any experienced C++/DirectX developers who would like to join the project (or maybe even lead/head), if so please e-mail Gamester17. New Release: xISO xFER PRO
>> From the readme:
Thanks to L!M!T releasing the sourcecode to xISO xFER, this is a modified version, designed for speed rather than looks. It removes the skin, multilingual + lots of other unnecessary code... including the annoying dialogs that popped up every time you did a transfer. >> From Xport on forums.xbox-scene.com:
StepmaniaX - Stepmania for XBox - v1
http://www.stepmania.com/stepmania/
Months before the official DDR game comes to platform, I give you StepmaniaX! Please note that this NFO does not contain instructions for how to use Stepmania. If this is your first time playing with Stepmania, then I suggest you download the Windows version first. Consult the stepmania website noted above and read up on the Stepmania documentation. This StepmaniaX package will run without any modifications/additions, but it will only contain one sample dance song. It is up to you do add the songs you desire.
If you don't know Stepmania:
Stepmania is a rhythm game. Arrows pointing in different directions scroll up from the bottom of the screen and the player must hit the corresponding button in time to the music. The game can be played with your hands using the keyboard, but the real fun comes when using a sensor-laden "dance pad". StepMania has Game Modes similar to Konami's Dance Dance Revolution and Andamiro's Pump It Up, Amuseworld's EZ2Dancer, and Konami's Para Para Paradise. Support for more games is planned in the future.
N64 emulator contest + Hikaru development *updated*
>> The idea was started by DrEggman on our forums to make a money contest to 'motivate' developers to write a fully working Nintendo64 emulator for Xbox. The contest now seriously started and is organized by Iriez (alias the #xbins admin). The project is divided into 3 main-goals: 8MB, 16MB and 32MB carts that and the full project should be finished after 13weeks.
If your are interested to donate money for this contest or if want information about the rules to start developing, check out http://www.xbins.org/n64contest.php You can also discuss about this contest on our forums. Team Xecuter already made a HUGE 1000USD donation for the project!
In meantime it looks like Hikaru has already been working on a N64 emulator for some time, but is having memory issues to make it work correctly. I can't give you more information about it because it's all in japanese and online translation doesn't work good at all. UPDATE: Mage on our forums translated the Japanese news, check it out!
Media X Menu 0.9i Released!, Finally!
>> 3 Hours ago.. XS member BenJeremy released the newest and best revision yet of his multi-purpose util (Mutli-Game Menu and Dashboard Replacement)
Details:
Media X Menu 0.9i
Big release.
Long story short: Complete overhaul of the skinning engine and menuing system. It can also run as a dashboard.
Beta 0.9i * Setting TitleDelay to "-1" will leave the title screen on until the user presses a button (Unless selected in image for layout) * New skinning technology (See accompanying SkinningOverview.doc for details) Key Features: - Font cache: Fonts are skin loadable resources. One is built in, and the MenuX fonts are loaded in in that mode. - "Old School" MenuX style menublock. While MXM's version is much more configurable, in MenuX mode, we make it look EXACTLY like the original, provided correct fonts are present. - Dynamic text fields with numerous effects using modifiers. Uses fonts from cache. * Added capability to use SubMenus and load from secondary menu files. This is a big one... still works the old way, but with true XML loading of the menu information, you can now group items in a variety of ways and also you don't need to worry anymore about the indexing. * I think the dashboard issues are fixed. More detail will be explained in the new User's Guide. It should run from any partition, but it does so by searching for itself as a dashboard (this is due to the fact that I have no way that I can tell where MXM is run from). * MXM supports multiple directories and files to be added to the local soundtrack (supported in skin) * Added power off to System Menu * Supports TitleImage.xbx (Program Icons) for image types. Using the XBE as an image source now redirects to the appropriate TitleImage.xbx file. * AutoDir supports "Flatten" and "Recurse" flags. Flatten keeps all entries, regardless of how deep they are in the directories, in the same menu level as the AutoDir tag - defaults to FALSE. Recurse, causes the AutoDir search to look into subfolders beyond one level down - defaults to TRUE. * option will eliminate multiple occurances of the same app from popping up. Defaults to TRUE. * Internal images can be used as resources. These have unique filenames: ::SkyTile ::Logo ::HelpGCScreen ::HelpKBScreen ::HelpIRScreen * Ugh. Dashboards menu doens't work too well. Not sure what's going on there. Hopefully it will be fixed by 0.9h * FTP server is enabled, but it will likely lock up on use. It requires a valid FileZilla.xml file, and I've run out of time to get it sorted out.
