WePlayHere.net goes live!
>> From SS-Funk on TeamXLink.co.uk:
First we want to say thank you to each of you for supporting us over the years. And because our users (you) are the best in the world we though, "What better way to repay them for their hard work than to give them a place to compete and call home". Well it's finally here, and we think your going to love it.
We have Ladders set up for Ghost Recon 2, Halo 2, Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow, Halo, and Mario Kart. If you wish to join any of these ladders, just register for the site, create a team, and join a ladder. Let the fun begin! To do this, just follow this link
With this I must also thank those who made this all happen. First I want to thank TheDaddy for allowing me to take on this job for all of us. Second I want to thank XCondor. Although most of you still think he is not real person, he paid for the domain to get this up on the web for all of us. Thanks guys! I also want to thank ShadowAce of XR8D for coming up with the domain name, I think it says it all. I would like to thank dfunked for hacking the hell out of the site to make it look how we all wanted it to. Still some work to do, but damn what an improvement. Last I would like to thank the members of SS-c that paid for the application that we are using for this site.
And again from all of us at Team XLink, Thank you for your continued support! Enjoy
DoomX v2.0 Beta
>> Carcharius and LikkleBaer released a new version of DoomX(info) - originally ported by Lantus:
As you can see, this is a huge release. It implements pretty much every feature we wanted to include in Doom-X and a few more besides. Any future releases will be primarily focused on bug-fixes, tweaks, and tidy-ups. So, without further time-wasting, check out the list of changes below and enjoy this new version. ^_^
What's new/fixed: * Mod support (pWADs only) with selectable Start Map * System link support for up to 4 players added (*extremely experimental* see below for details) * Graphics rendering code rewritten (performance gain) * Turning controls now fully analogue * 3 alternate controller configurations added (Legacy, Southpaw, and Legacy Southpaw) * Now detects controller in the lowest numbered port * Setup menu added to launcher for resolution mode and other settings * Start map can be changed for mods * Updated launcher with graphics, sound effects and new options * Xbox save games with title and save images added (saves from older versions should transfer automatically) * Freezing issues should be fixed * Fixed weapon cycling order bug * Fixed map panning controls * Fixed consecutive WAD loading bug * '.'s in startup text now display correctly * In-game menu bug fixed (Quit Game showing twice) * Other small bugfixes
NOTE: Remember that the System Link feature is still very much a work-in-progress so it may not work 100% correctly 100% of the time. Thus far it has only been tested on a LAN with 2 Xboxes though up to 4 should work fine. Detailed and constructive feedback on this feature would be appreciated.
WarDevil Shows Potential of Xbox 2
>> From xbox.ign.com:
The Internet is like dry brush and it doesn't take much to set it ablaze. Such is the case with WarDevil - Unleash the Beast Within, a next-generation title from UK-based Digi-Guys. The official website does not specifically state this title is for Xbox 2, however, several key pieces of information make it an almost sure thing. Though the trailer appears to be CG cut-scenes, Digi-Guys seems to suggest that the in-game visuals won't differ much. If this is true, WarDevil would rival today's current PC graphics, truly putting Xbox 2 on the console cutting edge. The cinematic experience of WarDevil is intentional, as the title will also become a CGI high-definition short film.
Xodus/Xtender Competition: winners announced
>> From TeamXodus.com:
We have sifted through the thousands of entries and have chosen the finalists and winners. It has really been a terrific contest and we would like to thank all of you once again for taking part. We are sure that this overwhelming enthusiasm is an indication of the excitement and anticipation for this unique co-operation agreement between Team Xodus and Team Xtender.
Both Teams had just as much fun reading your submissions, as you did coming up with them. Before announcing the finalists we would like to explain a few rules that were used. We looked for something that was unique, that would best describe the new product. Finalists were chosen by a panel from Team Xodus, Team Xtender and Xbox-Scene. From the names and phrases chosen as finalists, whenever a selection was chosen as a finalist, but was submitted by more than one candidate, the earliest posted submission was the one considered.
We will need to verify the name and identity of the chosen winners so please logon to the forums and PM message HSDEMONZ the following info: * Your full name, address, country etc. * Your email, IM and/or ICQ info * Your Xbox-Scene forums account.
We will contact you via your XS forums account to verify your identity. We have chosen five finalists and two winners. One winner for the name and a separate winner for the phrase. (this was not easy to do.. but we managed to get the list of fantastic entries down to a select few we could all agree on.) Each finalist will receive an Xtender Kit and a Xenium ICE. The two winners will receive an Xtender Kit, a Xenium ICE and a cash prize of USD $500 each. (Originally, we were only going to award one grand prize of the 500$ US but we decided that the enthusiasm shown by the scene, and it's members for Xodus and Xtender, and the amount of submissions, warranted 2 grand prizes for this contest.
So here are the five finalists. * Finalist/Product Name: -Thaylock "X-pack" -Pseudo99 "Xfusion" -blinx "Xmach3" * Finalist/Marketing Phrase: -Audiodox rewrite the rules *RUNTIME unlock the potential
The winners are. * Product Name: -"Xfusion" by Pseudo99 * Product Phrase: -"Rewrite the rules" by Audiodox.
We had a lot of fun with this contest. Keep a lookout for the Xfusion Logo contest which will be announced in a few days! Congratulations!
Gentoox fund appeal
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
I know I've done this before... and for the same reason in the past, but I'm desperate. My laptop has once again broken. No, this time it's not the screen that has snapped off, but the keyboard which has stopped working. There are only a few keys which still work... 2890-=skl;#x,./ to be precise. I wouldnt be too fussed, but this laptop is an integral part of my University life (I do most of my work on it). As I'm sure the students among you know... we generally don't have much money which is why I am having to make this appeal. If you can donate, please either contact me (using the contact link on left side of gentoox.shallax.com), or click the "Make a Donation" button (see on gentoox.shallax.com) to send money via PayPal. As always, you will be credited by having your name put on the site. Any amount is welcome, if I cant get enough for a laptop itself, then I may be able to get enough for a new motherboard for this existing one (I'm pretty sure the keyboard controller is half-dead since I've tried cleaning the contacts). Thank you for your consideration. I promise I won't exploit people by leaving this as a long-running donation period. Once I have enough for a laptop, I will inform you. (Donators will be migrated to the proper Donators list once this donation session is over)
Game Console Sales Plunge In 2004 and PS2 Shortage
>> From News.com:
* Game console sales plunge in 2004 In a report published Tuesday, market research company In-Stat/MDR predicted that worldwide shipments of game consoles will reach 19.3 million this year, compared with 35 million in 2003. Even with a slew of blockbuster game releases late this year, and the manufacturer price cuts to the PlayStation and the Xbox consoles made earlier in 2004, holiday sales are unlikely to push the industry anywhere near the explosive growth of the past few years, said In-Stat/MDR analyst Brian O'Rourke.
* PlayStation 2 shortage rattles shoppers But the company (Sony) said it's ramping up production and doing all it can to get more consoles in stores quickly. "Consumer demand for the new PlayStation 2 has exceeded our expectations, and we are doing all we can to fulfill the wish lists of people who want a new PlayStation 2 unit under their tree this holiday season," a representative of Sony Computer Entertainment America said. Analyst P.J. McNealy said the shortage could be a boon for competitor Microsoft, if Sony can't restock shelves before shoppers get really impatient. "We believe that Microsoft...continues to benefit from Sony shortages with Xbox console sales," he wrote in a report published Tuesday.
New Ratings System Proposed for Videogames
>> From TeamXbox.com:
Current Attractions is proposing an independent ratings system for videogames, an objective and quantitative reporting on the Profanity, Sex, and Violence for today’s hottest video game releases. With Current Attractions’ use of the proprietary PSVratings technology, parents will know exactly what to expect before they purchase video games containing potentially objectionable material for their children. Initially devised to evaluate movies, the PSVratings system utilizes the globally recognizable traffic-light symbol to convey three levels – green (suggestive), yellow (explicit) or red (graphic) of Profanity, Sex and Violence. W.I.P. Cromwell v2.4
>> A new version of Cromwell(info)/Xromwell(info) is currently in beta-test phase that will include a range of new features. From David P. of Team Xbox-Linux:
A lot of work has been put in to the Cromwell bios/Xromwell XBE for the next release, which is likely to be numbered 2.4 - presently called 2.33-dev.
It incorporates a number of new features, (likely to translate into a number of new bugs), such as: 1. The ability to boot multiple kernels (linuxboot.cfg syntax change). A frequently-requested enhancement. 2. A heirarchical text menu system, allowing you to change video mode (PAL/NTSC/NTSC-J), lock/unlock your hard disk, reflash your bios from CD (broken, known to be!), and reboot/power off your xbox. 3. Xbox IR remote working (slightly glitchy still) again. 4. Menus controllable by multiple xpads/remotes/keyboards, which are now hotpluggable.
It also has, for the first time in its existence, a manual. Hopefully, this should explain how to use some of the new features. It's not exhaustive, and I hope to find sections to revise based on your feedback. It is located: http://www.xbox-linux.org/Cromwell_Manual
As this cromwell is still in beta-phase and not ready for an official/widespread release there is no download. If you want to test it, know what you are doing and what this is all about I'm sure you'll find your way to access this beta and report your finding on the Xbox-Linux mailinglist.

In-Stat/MDR Report Says Xbox 2 is Coming in 2005
>> From TeamXbox.com:
The report "Game Consoles 2004: Waiting for the Next Generation", from high-tech market research firm In-Stat/MDR, expects the Xbox successor to arrive in late 2005: "The first next-generation console should hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2005 with the introduction of Microsoft's Xbox 2. Sony, however, is not likely to give Microsoft too much lead time before launching its PS3 console, which should occur by mid-2006. Nintendo will try to launch its next-generation GameCube 2 console either before, or simultaneously with Sony, which Nintendo considers to be its primary competition."
Hollywood Studios Endorse HD DVD
>> From TeamXbox.com:
Toshiba Corporation announced today that the company has received separate commitments of support from Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. Studios, respectively for the next-generation, high-definition DVD disc format, HD DVD. HD DVD is the next-generation optical disc format for recording and playback of high-definition content. HD DVD format is supported by cutting-edge blue-laser technology, new high level data-processing techniques, and highly-efficient video-compression technologies. A single, dual-layer HD DVD ROM disc, which has a 30-gigabyte capacity, can hold as much as eight hours of high-quality, high definition movie content. HD DVD is based on the same physical disc structure as DVD, which secures easy backward compatibility with today's DVD, and enables manufacture of highly reliable hardware and discs at a reasonable cost.
Read the whole article on TeamXbox.com.
Sony Corp., whose storage division developed the rival Blu-Ray technology, said Sony Pictures would release its own content in the Blu-Ray format, and that it plans to support this Blu-Ray specification in the Playstation3. Microsoft Corp. has yet to specify which DVD format it will endorse for the Xbox 2 (Xbox Next, Xenon), but it's known the HD-DVD association is trying to get Microsoft on board.

H2Edit 1.0 Beta 2
>> From nfo/readme:
H2Edit is a program similar to MonoxideC's HMT and Cluis's HHT but built for Halo 2 map files. I wrote this program to give modders a chance to easily mod map files.
Changes since Beta 1: 1. Lots of bug fixes. 2. Bitmap Viewing, extracting, and injecting. 3. Now handels the bsp(s) (You can extract the bsp or changes the dependencies within the app). 4. The encryption signature is fixed when the map is closed (only if changes have been made to the map) or you can choose to fix is manually. 5. Meta extracting and injecting now using xml files for dependencies instead of a text file. 6. Added Insert Blank space into meta.
Current Features: 1. Meta Extraction (Regular, Recursive and, Batch). 2. Meta Injection. 3. Tag Editor (Supports HMT, HHT, and CH2R plugins). 4. Dependency/LoneID swapping. 5. Insert blank space into meta. 6. Fixes the Encryption Signature (automaticly does this when the map is closed and changes have been made). 7. Extracts, view, and injects most bitmaps. 8. Extracts most sounds. 9. Hex Utilities (+magic, -magic, swap endian and, convert between hex and dec).
Known bugs or issues: 1. Some bitmaps won't extract or view (If the size is strange like 207x13) and some bumpmaps don't seem to extract either. 2. Some sounds won't extract (If the size is negative, it won't work).
Future Features: 1. Ident swapping. 2. Map rebuilding. 3. Model extraction and injection. 4. Sound injection. 5. A help system with Tutorials. 6. As Allways, find bugs and fix them.
Xbox v1.6b Compatibility, No Problem For Xenium OS
>> From TeamXodus.com:
1.6b COMPATIBILITY, NO PROBLEM FOR XENIUM OS We have recently picked up some malicious rumors regarding Xenium compatibility with Xbox version 1.6b and we thought we would update all of you with a clear and concise statement.
Xenium OS has absolutely no problem with 1.6b. There is no need to re-program or recall our chips at all. We have done extensive testing of both Xenium OS and the recovery system and have found no issues specific to 1.6b. Unlike other more outdated systems, Xenium OS has once again proven to be that much more advanced and that much more versatile, which makes us wonder how claims by others for top spot in this industry (no, in fact, on this whole planet) can be so arrogantly made without the backing and results to prove these claims.
Over the past year, our product has stood tall and proud as the genuine market leader and has proven itself time and again. Reliability, flexibility and stability are as important, (if not more so), than features and features that are yet to be proven. Remember that fourth generation chips are advanced, feature full SOFTWARE DRIVEN devices. If the software is not capable or flexible enough to adapt and change with the environment in which we currently find ourselves then even a claim to second place would be difficult to justify.
Our policy is simple. “If it aint broke don’t fix it” One year of tried and tested products that work seamlessly, without hiccups no matter what is thrown at them, should count for quite a bit in our book. Xenium has more than proved itself and there is very good reason why our chip and our Xenium OS are receiving the praise and accolades they are, and why we are changing perceptions and expectations in the industry, as seen in yet another flattering article in Xbox Nation Magazine. Whether that justifies a top rating is really up to you to decide.
