Tomorrow's games, designed by players as they play
>> J. Allard, Microsoft's Chief XNA Architect, talked about the 'games of tomorrow' on CNet:
Game budgets are skyrocketing. Development teams are swelling almost to film studio's proportions. The only way out of this trap is to enlist players to help create their own worlds.
"(Gaming) is the only medium where we yield control of the protagonist. Let's yield control of the director--and the producer," said Allard, a vice president at Microsoft. "We're going to take on the Wikipedia model. We're going to take on...the open-source model, if you will, for gaming."
Players' eagerness to go beyond the conventional boundaries has been seen in almost every online game. In the first major massively multiplayer game, Ultima Online, developers saw their swords-and-sorcery stories expanded by players who opened taverns to host online friends and create theater groups to perform "A Christmas Carol" inside the game.
"If only 1 percent of our audience that plays Halo helped construct the world around Halo, it would be more human beings than work at Microsoft corporation," Allard said. "That's how much human energy we could harness in this medium."
Xbox Live Arcade GM Jabs Nintendo, Sony
>> From next-gen.biz:
Xbox Live Arcade group manager Greg Canessa tells Next Generation that retro downloadable Nintendo games "won't hold up", and as far as a Sony online service goes... "good luck".
On Nintendo's retro service "I think it was interesting to see Nintendo's announcement for the Revolution downloadable games service which, of course, came over a year after we launched our initiative internally and around nine months after we already launched the first generation of Arcade for Xbox. I think it was a responsive move. Their service is interesting in sort of a 'retro' way, but I view Arcade as being so much more than what they're planning on doing. Their service is kind of a subset of what we're doing. We have a retro coin-op category within Arcade - the Midway titles have been performing amazingly - and we're doing a lot more in that space.
On Sony's online strategy "If Sony is trying to come at us, you know... 'good luck.' It's going to be really hard for them. It's just a huge engineering challenge, and beyond the engineering challenge, it takes a long time to build a community. Not to mention Arcade, because that has its own set of issues. You have to take time to build an ecosystem and talk to developers and get developers to put out games for that platform and work with them to plug into all of the underlying technologies that need to be in place and making sure it works properly." Top Ten Bogus Rumors About the Xbox 360
>> From the Team Xbox Blog:
Around these halls, people love rumors in the same way that we love American Idol. No substance or meaning, but crazy fun to watch. That's why I'm writing this post. An homage to the most foolish Xbox 360 rumors I've seen. Here we go:
10. Kameo is a kid's game. Not true. It's got a T rating. You can impale baddies with the spikes on your own back. Impale!
9. Xbox 360 is being recalled. There is no recall. Period. Return rates are actually lower than consumer electronics (CE) industry averages. 8. Microsoft is intentionally witholding product so as to build artificially high demand. Seriously. Think of the revenue hit we'd take if we actually did that.
7. Halo 3 is finished, and just sitting in a warehouse somewhere (in Poughkeepsie) See #8. Actually, come to think of it: we haven't announced anything about anything of which you claim we've announced or finished, as it were.
6. ____(insert name)___ is an alien/getting fired/fighting with _______ (Robbie Bach, Brian Lee, Peter Moore, J Allard, etc.) Nope. Peter's my boss' boss' boss, and I just want to say, in case you're reading this: "you're great!"
5. Everyone at Xbox is evil (or a robot, or is money grubbing, etc.) Dude - we're gamers. We're just trying to make a better games and entertainment than the other guy.
4. We stopped working on backwards compatibility. Still going.
3. We chose Barbie's Horse Adventure first, because we didn't want PGR2 to be BackCompat Nope, some titles are just bonus because other titles work.
2. Sony will launch a broadband service better than Xbox Live. A big, bold claim. Two words: Emotion Engine.
1. Bungie has no plans to take over the world Not true. Just look at their seven step plan.
Bunnie About Free60 Project Development
>> Bunnie posted some new comments about the development of the free60 Project on his blog:
I have been able to find the time to make minor contributions to the Free60 project (see if you can't guess which pages are mine...I've been posting under a different alias to avoid undue attention, as that can be harmful to good teamwork and make it difficult to receive honest peer review), and it has been very interesting to watch the progress of the project overall. Currently, it seems that the shader hack is still quite promising, as well as people looking directly at the DVD firmware. The quality and acumen of the hackers out there is simply outstanding. I don't think you could raise enough money to form a company of finer and more motivated engineers-and remarkably, nobody is being paid to do this. I guess that's the power of passion.
Datel to release 4GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 - Lik-Sang's First Impressions
>> From Lik-Sang.com:
We have received from the mighty Datel the first evaluation sample of their next product to come: a new 4GB "harddrive" solution for the Xbox 360. Will it rock or will it suck? Will it float or will it sink? We're about to find out soon.
One thing is for sure, if you are waiting for a third-party HDD for your core Xbox 360 system because you are pissed at both the high price and low availability of the official Microsoft unit... well, this is not yet what you have been begging for. This new device is connected to the 360 via the USB connection, same as any other portable PC hard drives or USB drives would be, and it does not offer the same range of options as the official HDD does (no game saves, no going online, only media files transfer). It also offers only 4GB of space, same as the very popular HDD that these guys just outted for the PSP. In fact, it uses the same Magicstor 4 gigs microdrives inside. From our point of view, the coolest thing about it is probably the greenish power button drawing on the top of the product. Or arguably the fact that a green glowin' light comes out of the USB connector when you slot it in your console [wow]. Lik Sang is not convinced if this gimmick will prove to be cool enough for geek-chic circles and hardcore gamers out there. But then again, Datel is probably aiming at the pick-my-games-at-supermarket-with-my-salad crowd on this one. Price point is expected to be above the 100 US$ mark [did I start the article saying the Microsoft 20 gigs drive was expensive?] and Datel plans to launch before the end of February.
TeamXecuter: Kudos to The Specialist
>> TeamXecuter(info) sends Kudos to The Specialist who managed to hack the DVD firmware of the original Xbox earlier this week. If you missed the news, check it out here. From teamxecuter.com:
This last week has seen the fruits of a massive amount of work by "The Specialist" over at xboxhacker.net - he managed to hack the DVD firmware to enable and Xbox (1) to play backups with no need for a modchip or softmod. Although this type of hack is restricted to the machines own region and none homebrew, however its fine work and we can imagine how he felt when he acheived this - we've had many of those times ourselves in the past.
We also agree with his position that he wishes not to release this hack into the wild. To read some of the posts made by the scene kiddies complaining about this need to get an education and stop whining like bitches. If it's that important to you do it yourself - the information on how-to is all on the xboxhacker.net forums.
Congrats and kudos - ignore the idiots TS, the majority of the scene appreciate your efforts.
Project Mimesis comes to XLink and New Mimesis Content

The folks at XBox Live won't let you play homebrew content on their service. So we've (XLink Kai(info)) set up dedicated Mimesis arenas for Halo 2, Ghost Recon 2, Star wars: Battlefront, and Rainbow Six: Black Arrow. Head over to www.projectmimesis.com and breathe new life into some classic XBox games!
Some new content has been released on Project Mimesis aswell:
Cable Room (Halo2) While on recon, this structure suddenly broke loose, leaving it spiraling down in a free-fall. Regain control or die.

Auto-Installer Deluxe v3.0
>> A new version of 'Auto-Installer Deluxe' has been released. It's a CD that allows you to easily setup your Xbox and install many homebrew programs. From xbox-hq.com:
Here is the final version of Auto-Installer Deluxe. This version mainly is just a compliation of the original AID 2.0 (with the 2.02 Update patch) and some newer releases. This time around I've even included a new dashboard (AnodX) and also a custom 128mb version of MAME (for all you DreamX freaks out there). I've also finalised Softmod Installer Deluxe 3 Lite (SID 3 Lite) which is also in the installer. Why have I decided to call this version a final? Mainly because I don't really see much point in bringing out another installer until the new console, everything that you would want to install on your Xbox is here, and in it's most up-to-date versions.
What's new/fixed: * Added: SID 3 Lite, installable via the Advanced Options menu. * Dashboards Added/Updated: Anod-X(info) v1.02.1 ; Avalaunch(info) 0.49.3 Build 142 * Software Added/Updated: dvd2xbox(info) 0.6.8 ; FBAxxx(info) 2005-07-23 ; MAMEoX(info)128 Plus 2005-07-26 ; ScummVMx(info) 0.71 ; Softmod Installer Deluxe v3.0 Lite ; XboxMediaCenter(info) 2005-07-31
FBA-XXX Pro v1.01
>> From readme/nfo:
FBA-xxx Pro is a a derivative build of FBAxxx(info), the main purpose of which is to add support for the latest and most accurate ROMsets available to the emulation scene. A great many changes and additions have been made to the rather outdated sets supported by the original build, including new parents, new clones, new bootlegs, support for both encrypted and decrypted Neo-Geo sets, as well as the latest CPS and other set updates from MAME. Alot of new code has been added to improve the accuracy of the emulation, there are some minor tweaks and bugfixes to the emulator itself, and a new default skin (a modified version of the excellent Fighter skin by Duracelleur) is included.
Both Romcenter and ClrMAMEPro DATs can also be found in the package so please make use of them to ensure the ROMsets you have are the ones FBA-xxx Pro requires. And don't forget you'll also need the Neo-Geo bios set (neogeo.zip) in your ROMs folder.
Xbox 360 loses remote
>> From gamespot.com:
When the Xbox 360 made its grand launch in North America last November, gamers who got a hold of the hard-to-find premium pack were treated to a few extras. In addition to a 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, and HD AV cables, early adopters also got a limited edition Xbox 360 Media Remote Control. Though chances of finding an Xbox 360 are remote, the chances of finding one with the bonus remote are even more...remote.
The limited run of bonus Media Remote Controls is apparently over. A GameStop employee has confirmed to GameSpot that the bonus remotes have not been shipping with the Xbox 360 Premium Packs that have been trickling into their store. This means that Xbox 360 preorders that still remain unfulfilled--and may very well have been placed months ago--won't be getting the controller.
John Carmack about Next Gen consoles
>> Here's what John Carmack (ID co-founder) to PC Gamer UK Magazine (via next-gen.biz) about the Xbox 360:
Consoles vs. PC "The difference between theoretical performance and real-world performance on the CPU level is growing fast. On, say, a regular Xbox, you can get very large fractions of theoretical performance with not a whole lot of effort. The PlayStation 2 was always a mess with the multiple processors on there, but the new generations, with Cell or the Xbox 360, make it much, much worse. They can quote these incredibly high numbers of giga-flops or tera-flops or whatever, but in reality, when you do a straightforward development process on them, they're significantly slower than a modern high-end PC." "...The graphics systems are much better than that, though. Graphics have an inherent natural parallelism. The capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PS3 are really good on the graphics side -- although, not head or shoulders above any PC stuff that you can buy at a higher price-point."
Xbox DVD Firmware Hacked *Updated*
>> From TheSpecialist on xboxhacker.net:
Yes! I've just played a backup DVD on a XBOX 1 without any modchip/softmod, just a hacked firmware :-) This completes our work on the XBOX 1. The drive I modded was a 8050L. The good news is that the firmware in this drive is very similar to the firmware in the GDR3120, used in the XBOX 360. I think it's time for me to buy one now :-) Thanks to all the contributors in the firmware hacking thread!
This hacked firmware will fake the disc detection (will trick drive to detect disc as DVDXBOX media), the xbe must still be signed though (for DVDXBOX media), so this hack will not allow to run homebrew/linux stuff, atleast not directly (if there are possible font or other exploits in retail games, this could be used as alternative to gamesave exploits to install a dashboard exploit for example). The finished hacked firmware (for the H-L 8050L drive) should be able to boot any MS-signed xbox executables (xbe) with DVDXBOX mediaflag and with regionflag matching your console's region (in case it's region locked - and no you can't change regionflag of the xbe as that would break the signature) from any recordable media. The 8050L is the Hitachi-LG DVD drive found in newer Xboxes (see here).
*UPDATE* A new update from TheSpecialist and SiliconIce on xboxhacker.net:
TheSpecialist: I now completely understand how he[bunnie when he extracted the RC4] felt :-) It was also 4 AM for me yesterday, when I inserted the patched drive into my xbox and inserting a backup for the first time, to see if it worked. I too felt great euphoria when it did Smiley However, after the 'come down' you start to realise that your work could have major impact... I like hacking. I always liked it. I like the process. Till now, nobody 'profited' from what I did. I'd like to keep it that way :-) People are, very kindly, already offering me hardware and even money to get a hack done for the 360. I really appreciate it, but I don't want to prosper financially in any way from my work. I understand that releasing this hack would have major impact. Althought I serioulsy doubt that releasing a 'firmware *patcher* is illegal, I don't want to take my chances on it :-) I think anybody who wants to do something like that should ask himself if it's worth all the trouble he might get into. I feel it's not. That's why I'm not releasing anything. I hope everybody understands :-)"
SiliconIce: TheSpecialist has done some great work, and I understand and support his position. As always, we are working on a very slippery slope.
Krayzie Ndure Installer v1.1
>> Krayzie released a new version of the Krayzie NDURE Installer (not to be confused with Kingroach NDURE Installer v3.0), this a tool that will allow you you to easily install the latest software exploits on your Xbox. From readme/nfo:
This softmod installer installs the Ndure Exploit along with Nkpatcher(info)11_UO2 and EvolutionX(info) or UnleashX(info) as a dashboard. This exploit is compatible with all kernels (all xbox versions) and has the ability to be used with xbox live (it can even receive game updates). Also it has many safety features such as a virtual C and virtual eeprom making it very hard to mess them up and it has various bootpaths to ensure you won't have to freak out when you accidentally (re)move/mess up your dashboard. This package is fully customizable to each ones liking and could be used as a very complete All In One softmod method. The main purpose of this installer is to setup an easy and secure way to use a complete softmod with many easy to set up options.
The installer itself is pretty easy to use as you will be guided through the whole softmod process and every step is explained in detail. Various install options are available like: -minimum install which will install error free anytime without any requirements like stock C or dashboard version -basic install which does the main install with all covered options available but has requirements (stock C 5960 dashboard) -upgrade from 1.0 which upgrades a Krayzie Ndure 1.0 installed package to 1.1 leaving your dashboard intact
Further more when installed it can (optionally) be fully customized using the added Extras option. This ad-on package can be used in several ways; just ftp it your Apps folder or burn it to disc and run it. You could even fill this disc with your own favourite Apps and Emulators and let the disc copy them to your HD thus eliminating the need of (dangerous) autoinstaller discs.
Xbox 360 Dashboard and Kernel Update - Kiosk Disc Blocked *UPDATED*
>> As mentioned yesterday Microsoft released a mandatory update for dashboard and kernel of the Xbox 360 today. Both Dash and kernel go from version 2.0.2241.0 to 2.0.2255.0, but it looks like the 'background download' feature is not there yet. From teamxbox.com and xbox.com:
This free update, is now available over Xbox Live. There are no new features in this release, but rather a series of fixes and enhancements. Some of the items the update addresses are: * Improved logic around deciding if saved games should be deleted and offer the option to only delete the profile and to leave all save data. * Users reporting blank Friends List on the Xbox 360 dash after muting a friend while playing a game in Backwards Compatibility mode. * Improved synching of games played to Web and in console. * Network settings: keyboard does now allow entry of - (dash) character in the keyboard. * Improvements to the Xbox Guide. * Increased accuracy of "last time played." * Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live members in the Netherlands. * More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.
Read More: teamxbox.com and xbox.com.
*UPDATE* Not listed in the 'improvements', but it looks like Microsoft also tightened the security as they blocked the Kiosk Disc (a DVD with demo games sent to shops to run in their Kiosk/Demo Xbox 360 and that was found to be signed to also boot from recordable media) from booting so we can no longer experiment with the unsigned data (like music, videos, bf, swf, ... files) on that disc. Several people have confirmed today on our forums that you'll get an "unrecognized disc" error when inserting the disc in an updated Xbox 360. There's also an article about it on gamasutra.com. The update is mandatory if you want to be able to sign-in on LIVE.

XboxMediaCenter (XBMC) 2006-01-29 CVS T3CH build
>> T3CH released a new CVS compile of XboxMediaCenter(info). This T3CH-compile is a BAREBONE package (with just a few thirdparty scripts and with just the default skin) compiled with XDK v5849.
Here's the added/changed stuff from the changelog since the 2006-01-24 CVS release: * added: cube codec to paplayer. plays gamecube/ps2/xbox music (from games). based on in_cube. * added: option to auto resume from last position in video settings. * added: gui indication when trainers are disabled due to kai. * added: <onclick> (replaces <execute>) and <onfocus> actions to the button control. The <onfocus> action is performed at the end of any Focus animation. * added: ReplaceWindow(window, path) built in command. The same as ActivateWindow, but it doesn't add to the window history (so back will take you to the previous window's previous window.) * added: always attribute to <defaultcontrol> in home and custom windows. If true, it will always return to the default control on window start. * changed: only smb:// urls are checked for workgroup/domain. allows semicolon to be used as username and password in other protocols. * changed: trainer enigine update to v2.2. thanks to team xored! * changed: Multiple <visible> tags in the same control are ANDed together. * changed: Made the <id> optional for label/image/fadelabel controls. * changed: Slightly improved timing for animations. ... rest of changelog (including many fixes): here.
Keep in mind this is a CVS snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.
