Gentoox: "BOOT: USB INIT" Bug and X2VGA Support *updated*
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
* After spending some time today upgrading my server, I finally tracked down the Cromwell(info) USB lockup bug. The bug is actually caused by the vibrating xpad on startup. This will be disabled in all future releases of Gentoox.
* I want to work in proper 720p and 480p VGA support into Gentoox, the only way I can do this is with an X2VGA since HDTV doesn't exist in England, however as most of you know, I'm a university student with no money. I wouldn't normally do this but it is definitely for the project --- If anyone can donate any money for me to buy an X2VGA it would be most appreciated (I think in total I'd need ~$70-80). By no means am I expecting one person to donate the whole $80, but maybe a few people could spare $5 here and there. If I dont get the full amount, I'll put forward what money I have left to buy one (I only have about $20 in the world, heh.) By now, I would normally have enough money from donations, but since I released Gentoox Home(info) v3.0, only 2 people have donated (maybe people are losing interest?). UPDATE: I now have enough to order an X2VGA. I can't believe how much response I got to this news post, thank you everyone! Ive been out for a couple of hours and I just couldnt believe how many emails I got! I'll add people to the donator list right away! Thanks again! UPDATE2: Ok, it's ordered, now I just have to wait for it to ship... 10-15 days :o
For some time we've been thinking of what could we possibly add to an Xbox mod, as for most of you it already does everything you need. Post all questions / comments / feedback / wishlist to this thread.
This is where we currently are. A few features still need fixing due to minor bugs but it's simply a time issue as opposed to difficulty. There are more features too but we haven't addressed them just yet. Bear in mind all new X3 Config Live! features to this mod will be a simple free update. If we were to guess I'd say that its about 85% completed. I can also confirm that the new case design has just begun its final development phase so we're hoping to have that ready in the first Q of 2004 also.
Please note this is not a final feature list. There will obviously be changes when it goes gold, it all depends on timescale. However if anything is left out it will be added as a free update - this also goes for features not listed, there may be even more ;)
We'd just like to give props to all those who have had a major input into this new design. It's taken a lot of hard work to get this far and it's been a huge group effort - thanks guys !
Not forgetting xbox-scene.com, worldxbox.co.uk and maxconsole.com for their support in collating members ideas and suggestions on what they would like to see in a new mod.
You can also use this modification to make the X2.x programmer work on Xecurter 2.3 modchips:
As you know the old X2 Lite Programmer will not programe the new 2.3 mod. Well here is a small modification to make it work just fine simply by soldering 1 wire - no Xecuter1 jokes please ;)
They also posted some install notes for the Xecuter2.3 Lite:
Worldxbox.co.uk have posted an excellent tutorial on installing the X2.3 Lite. You may also want to read this thread on how they discovered an easy fix for those with problems using the wires install.
(Japan) Xbox sales down again
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
In hardware terms, the PlayStation 2 builds a solid lead over its competitors, with just over 45 per cent market share - well ahead of the Game Boy Advance, which clocks up almost 34 per cent share. The GameCube continues to record decent sales, with 18 per cent market share, but the Xbox has dropped much of the boost it gained in last week's ratings, following a price cut, and manages only a touch over 2 per cent market share this week. Xbox2 For 2006 ?
>> From totalvideogames.com:
According to remarks made in Japan by Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, the US giant will release Xbox2 (Xenon) in 2006.
Whilst many had suspected that Microsoft would try to gain the upper hand on Sony and launch in 2005, it now appears that Microsoft are happy to squeeze another year out of the Xbox and launch on a level pegging with the Playstation3 in 2006.
GameSpy and IGN announce intention to merge
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
Videogame website networks GameSpy and IGN are set to merge, in a move which they claim will create the largest network of gaming websites on the Internet, with traffic exceeding 673 million pageviews per month.
The two American site networks are expected to complete the merger in the first half of 2004, with IGN chief executive Mark Jung serving as CEO of the new company, while GameSpy founder and chairman Mark Surfas will be chief strategy officer. Both of the major corporate identities will be retained, as the GameSpy and IGN brands are both considered to be very strong - although we can presumably expect to see some rationalisation of the new company's operations where overlaps in content occur. X2 2.3 lite problem/solution *updated*
>> It appears that there have been instances of the 2.3 lite not working on some versions of xbox's..
Nolga from System-Mods posted a fix on the x-s forums: 1. Scrape the ground point on your mobo with the washer very lightly. 2. Solder the ground wire to the ground Screw in connector thing (the little round thing you screw on the board, make shure the washer is underneath it). dont solder the connector to the mobo screw it in. 3. Use 2 washers to make a better connection. (incase steps 1 and 2 dont work for you, if you do this solderign the ground cable is not required) You can do this how ever you want all you need is a good ground connection.
Update: Some info about the Xecuter 2.3 Lite has just been posted on Team Xecuter's website too:
Thanks for all the feedback on X2.3 Lite - Here's a few answers to some of the questions....
Q. Why does the new ground point have 3 wires. A. By taking voltage from the USB we needed a stronger GND connection due to longer wires used
Q. The mod is not working A. That will be a bad ground connection. Make sure the star washer is sitting first and then the adapter (3 wires) and then the ring connection (black wire)
Q. OK I've done that still a bad ground A. Score the GND adapter gold contact with an exacto knife or whatever - or use another star washer in between the GND adapter and the Ring adapter.
Q. Xbox boots up with orange LED and tray ejects but nothing on screen - wtf ? A. Your mod is working. You have an Xbox with the new Focus video chip and the Cromwell(info) bios isnt compatible yet. Simply insert your Bios update CD as instructed, Xbox will reboot after about 20 seconds and it will work just fine with your new X2 4979 or Evox M7 bios.
Q. The X2 Lite Programmer doesn't work A. The old programmer is not compatible. A new version is being released shortly.
Hope this helps a few people out.
Microsoft, USO to link troops worldwide via Xbox
>> From forbes.com:
LOS ANGELES, Dec 4 (Reuters) - For soldiers who go to war all day long, the military thinks it might be relaxing for them at night to go AWOL, virtually, with friends and family thousands of miles away. Microsoft Corp. said on Thursday it will work with the United States Air Force and troop morale organization, the USO, to set up its Xbox video game console, games and Internet connections at USO centers worldwide so soldiers can get away from the real action by playing games and chatting with their friends and family back home. The program will start with eight centers, including two in New York, one in Los Angeles, and centers in Korea and Germany.
(USA) Game console holiday sales off to strong start
>> From forbes.com:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas for the video game industry with sales of game players appearing solid during the recent Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.
Microsoft said year-over-year hardware sales for its second-place Xbox were up 7 percent during Thanksgiving week. "We think we're still pretty much on plan to make our numbers for the year," Aaron Greenberg, a business manager for Xbox at Microsoft, told Reuters. Greenberg also said Microsoft had seen a 435 percent rise in week-over-week sales of "Halo," the best-selling Xbox game ever, after Microsoft cut the title's price to $29.99 from $49.99.
Nintendo said it sold more than 500,000 units of its GameCube console during Thanksgiving week, roughly twice what it sold in the entire month of October.
Sony, whose PlayStation 2 console dominates the international market, said the PS2 sold more than 1 million units in November, with sales of its $199 online-enabled Combo Pack doubling from October. Sony also said sales of its own games doubled from October as well.
Xbox deflects real bullets
>> Enjoy this I found on gamespot.com:
When called to investigate a shooting last Friday night, police in Anne Arundel County, Maryland found an unlikely culprit--an Xbox. The Baltimore Sun reports that 34-year old Robert Preston Kersey had grown enraged by his roommates constantly playing their Xbox at high volume. According to the police report, Kersey emerged from his bedroom at 2 a.m. brandishing an automatic pistol. Rather than shoot his roommates, Kersey took aim at the offending Xbox and fired a single shot at the console. While the bullet's impact disabled the Xbox, its thick plastic casing deflected the 9mm round, which ricocheted away harmlessly.
ClassicX: update on status of ports
>> From Lantus on http://www.lantus-x.com/ClassicX/:
Good news for FPS fans - im in the porting mood again. Here's an update of all things ClassicX style:
SDLQuake - actively being worked on. Gamepad routines almost complete. Working on Mod menu next and its testing then release time. First cut wont support networking. Im contemplating porting Quakeworld over for that but thats longer term. ETA of first build : days.
Duke3dX - im not satisfied with its current state and definetly want to update this. Im looking at bringing out another update before Christmas but SDLQuake is definetly my focus at this time.
ROTTX - theres a few outstanding bugs that some users have reported to me. Looking at an update before Christmas.
Doomx - Doomx is dead. However ive been playing around with prBoom and I *might* look into a port. No promises though.
Hexen2 - started a port of this , it was one of my other favorites. No ETA, longer term project.
Gentoox: Joyd + Kernel
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
Great news! The 2.4.22 kernel is stable and the Forcedeth and FatX patches work perfectly! After a day of compiling nothing has gone wrong.
The even greater news is that Gentoox now supports "IGR" thanks to ICEH for pointing out Joyd! Basically, once the system is booted, the following button combinations on the xpad (joypad/ controller) can be executed: Back + White = REBOOT Back + Black = HALT
More combinations will be available once I've had time to test them out (I'm thinking of one to restart Xfree and one to reload the onscreen keyboard). If this patch interests you, run "magic" now!!!
Future consoles to get all emotional
>> From silicon.com:
Sony is planning to enable future versions of its PlayStation gaming console to recognise user gestures and even emotions, according to an executive. The PlayStation 3 may also incorporate a motion sensor and camera add-on known as EyeToy.
Consoles such as the PlayStation 2, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube are seen as a testing ground for bringing new technologies such as broadband into the home and making them more user-friendly. Consumer electronics companies, software makers and PC makers are looking at ways of linking devices such as gaming consoles, digital video recorders, PCs and televisions. Companies in the PC realm are also working on alternative ways for users to interact with computers.
Following generations of consoles will include more complex motion recognition, allowing users to control games via eye movements, gestures and complex finger movements, Harrison (SCE vice president) said, comparing these controls to the motion-sensor interfaces in the film Minority Report. xRick version #021212
>> Lantus ported Rick Dangerous to Xbox:
Rick Dangerous was one of my favorite games during the old Amiga days, so its fitting that I ported xRick over to the good old black box. Greets and thanks go out to BigOrno for the original xRick source.
Rick Dangerous? Way before Lara Croft, back in the 1980's and early 1990's, Rick Dangerous was the Indiana Jones of computer games, running away from rolling rocks, avoiding traps, from South America to a futuristic missile base via Egypt and the Schwarzendumpf castle. xrick is a clone of Rick Dangerous, known to run on Linux, Windows, BeOs, Amiga, QNX... XLink KAI support within XBMP/C
>> From RUNTiME on XBMP:
Recent progress by the Xlink team with its KAI software (allowing users to play System Link games over the Internet) has led to discussion about the possibility of integrating certain features into the media player.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be working with the lead Xlink developer to try and establish a practical subset of features that might be suitable to integrate as a plug-in to XBMP/C.
>> From //[XC]D-Ice on http://dott.lir.dk/xbmp/:
Loved XBMP WEB?? Want the diff files?? If yes, then i got them for you..... I just found them on my old HDD, and thought i would share them with you all... Just click !!HERE!! and you will have access to them :D
Also a note about the XBMP WEB shutdown:
XBMP is NOT dead.... only XBMP WEB (a modded version of XBMP) is DEAD
First of all...tnx to all who have written in the guestbook. But.... after i have looked it through, many seems to think that XBMP is dead. I just wan't to say that it is NOT true... It is only my personal mod of XBMP that has come to an end. If people just had looked a bit down on the page, it saya that i have joined the XBMP team, and I am still there. XBMP, and also XBMP is more alive then ever before and will not die, unless interrest drop, or people stop donate money to the team. We really need a few €, $, £ or whatever your currency is. If you thought XBMP WEB was good, then you will also LOVE XBMP & XBMC.
So to make it clear..... XBMP & XBMC ARE NOT DEAD
Work In Progress: Gentoox Pro v1.1/Home v3.1 and kernel patch in magic
>> Some updates from ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com from the last few days:
(*) Pro v1.1 will be the next update to see the light of day. It features totally updated and rebuilt software, the new reboot/ halt mechanisms that call on the Xbox's PIC (as seen in Home 3.0) and more importantly, all of the non-Xfree related patches from magic, including a brand new kernel with preliminary Focus video support and Fatx improvements which should allow normal users to access all FatX partitions (Thanks to Nuno Grilo for this patch, which he developed in Gentoox Home(info) v3.0!).
For now, if Home users want this new kernel, they can run "magic fix kernel-2.4.22 && magic". I will be releasing Gentoox Home v3.1 as soon as I have Pro 1.1 fully tested. Also, keep in mind that the Focus support should be treated as alpha and it can only handle 640x480 resolutions!
I discovered that I was compiling Gentoox with "-O3" compile flags which actually can make some applications up to 20% slower than "-O2" so all packages are being recompiled with: CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" -fomit-frame-pointer should reduce the executable size, which is a good idea for Celeron processors since they have a small cache (though this will make debugging crashes harder).
(*) Just as I was doing the final tests for Pro 1.1, I discovered that Kernel 2.4.23 had been released and Xbox-Linux was now baselined on this kernel. Because of this, the release has been delayed so I can upgrade to 2.4.23. I should also add that kernel 2.4.23 will be available in patch form via magic once I've tested it! Status: * Fixed ALSA so it works with Kernel 2.4.23 * Totally removed the nvnet module and replaced with forcedeth. The good news about this is that people wont experience the "mysterious" network failure after updating their system. Also, this new network module is 100% legal. * Fixed excessive verbosity from forcedeth driver (Saw this error at the last second!) * Focus support removed. Totally screws up the frame buffer making it run at half speed and breaking Xfree. It will be added when it's stable
(*) Here it is as promised... Just before I go to sleep. Run "magic" to update to kernel 2.4.23. This includes FatX fixes (lets non-root users access F and other partitions). This fatx fix will need a little tweaking until I get new versions released. What you need to do is edit your /etc/fstab file, and delete all the /dev/hda51 and /dev/hda55 lines, and replace them with these (this wont work for drive E as it is mounted in the initrd file. C and E should never really have full write permissions for security reasons!): /dev/hda51 /mnt/fatx/c fatx defaults,noauto,umask=022 0 0 /dev/hda55 /mnt/fatx/f fatx defaults,umask=0000 0 0
This may be considered as a security risk to some people, so adjust as you see fit (google search umask howto). This will allow ANY user to read/write and execute from F:, but it will only allow root to write to C and E. The new forcedeth driver works great. Try this out and post feedback on the forums or email me. Thanks!
(*) After a day of tinkering, ICEH, MaDsKiLLz and I have discovered a major bug whilst running Kernel 2.4.23. Basically, the kernel would Oops and totally lock the system up in what appears to be a filesystem error: Message from syslogd@Pro at Sun Nov 30 22:07:48 2003 ... Pro kernel: journal-601, buffer write failed I'm looking into a solution right now (probably revert to 2.4.22 with the new fatx patches etc...). I'll let you know as soon as its ready! Sorry!
