NitroXX + IRmod review
>> NitroXX + IRmod review 05 April 2003 by XanTium@xbox-scene
Where to buy:
* http://www.elses.de
* http://www.chiptech.de
Official NitroXX support website:
* http://www.gamesx.de
What was in the NitroXX package:
* the NitroXX modchip
* the wire adaptor
* the LTP cable
What's in de IRmod package
* the IR-mod
* all wires
* all 'clips' (nosolder version)
* 'IR eye'
What you need to install it:
* a v1.0/v1.1/v1.2 xbox
* a TORX 10
* a TORX 20
* Solder Equipment
* a bios - NitroXX is sold empty.
Downloads:
* NitroXX manual (german): here
* IR-mod manual (german): here
* PC-BioXX/PC-NitroXX v1.4: here
NitroXX:
First you need to install it , before you can flash it (needs power).
Installation of the modchip is like expected - it's a typical LPC wire-install (LPC points are very easy - the d0 is medium) with a few more wires if you want to use the reset/power button for the modchip en/disable. There are very good instruction manuals - sadly these manuals are only available in german atm. The tutorial also explains how you can install a status LED on the NitroXX.
The NitroXX was tested successfully - flashing (via PC with PC-BioXX v1.4 program) worked without any problems. Bios switching and en/disable worked. The biggest downside is that you can't flash the NitroXX with xbox software (like via EvolutionX).
POSITIVE:
+ New version of the legendary OpenXbox/PC-BioXX
+ 1x 1024 , 2x 512k , 4x 256k bios switching
+ Disable mod option with power/reset-button for xlive (no extra switch)
+ Flasher included - no risks of bad flashes
+ PC-NitroXX flasher (win32 program to flash your modchip) works like a charm
+ Distributed without bios - fully legal
+ 1024k max size ... good for possible larger bios releases
+ Easy solder install
NEGATIVE:
- Not flashable via xbox software
- Price
- All documents are in german (english version should come soon)
IR-Mod:
There are 2 version of the IR-mod. One that needs soldering , the other not. Installation is not straightforward so you'll need the installation guides. They are again only in german so far , but the pictures really tell enough , so you shouldn't have any real problem to install it. You will also need a remote - I tested it with the official Xbox remote and it worked fine. I'm not sure if it can also work with other remotes. The installation requires to take power directly from the power cables (the no-solder IRmod 'pinches' the cables) which is kinda strange , but it works fine.
The IRmods allows to power of/off your xbox , eject , en/disable the modchip and change bios with the remote. If your games are on the hard drive you really don't have to come near your xbox anymore - that's really great :-)
This modchip has been tested with the NitroXX , but all functions except the bios selection will of course also work with other modchips.
POSITIVE:
+ IR-mod addon is original and adds a cool new feature to the xbox
+ No need to touch your xbox anymore ... you can operate everything with the remote
+ Price (you need the Xbox remote though)
NEGATIVE:
- All documents are in german (english version should come soon)
- Installation is not so obvious , but the nosolder version should be easy enough for most people.

Nice tool similar to slayer's disk , but I still STRONGLY suggest you do all this manually - so atleast you know how things are done and you'll be able to solve problems or do later upgrades.

Work In Progress: 'XBThingy' (temp name)
>> We received this mail from Parnic:
No name yet – jokingly called XBThingy
This app will be a game manager with a few extra features. The games list is stored in an Access database and the app will serve as both a client and a server to allow people to share their lists. It searches your hard drive (via a visual folder listing to make it easier) and xbox for games (looking for an iso or default.xbe) and will store the directory they’re in, the name from the xbe, and the size. It will also transfer games back and forth and find how much space you have to use on both ends without you having to type it in. That’s about it for now, hopefully more features in the future! ETA about a week or less. Email xbthingy@parnic.com with any questions/constructive comments/suggestions.

>> ShALLaX just released the xbox 'port' of the Gentoo Linux distro on the xbox-linux website!
You can see the full readme-file and omitted info
You can download this +550MB release from here[sourceforge.net]
This release doesn't interfere with the rest of your xbox , you just have to copy all the files to the E drive and add a launch line to EvoX.

1. What is this trash?
TRASH?! This is not trash, its Gentoo! Gentoo is one of the many linux distributions available. Check out www.gentoo.org for more information. This isnt really a port so to speak, just a reconfiguration so from here on port will be in ''s just so you know I'm not claiming to have done any coding.

New Release: Halo trainer with editor utility
>> From the nfo:
This is a modification of the Crazy Nation Halo trainer. A trainer allows you to adjust variables in the Halo game. The strings and code are now plainly so you can edit them. We call this the Halohacker Trainer to distinguish it from the CZN trainer.
We are also providing a useful utility for editing/customizing the halo trainer. It displays all of the editable globals(cheats) in halo, and the globals(cheats) in the trained xbe. You can add and remove globals(cheats) on your menu, thus trying out different cheats.
Nobody has figured out how some of them work, so post your findings.

Tiros said he managed to transform a SAMSUNG 616T to fully work in the Xbox. It does need some modifcations before it works ofcourse (like flashing the rom of the drive , ...)
Tiros post on the xboxhacker.net forums:

Project Proteus
>> From Skinneh:
The device I am currently working on will allow the user to select, via a menu, which HD and BIOS they would like to utilize. Once selection is complete, this device will cycle power and boot the console with the options you selected. There will, of course, be a default setting which it will boot cold from.
I am HOPING that this mod will be completely solderless and will simply "hijack" the front panel pin header as well as a USB header to provide it's basic functionality. Depending on your BIOS setup, it may or may not be solderless. (Chances are... if you are really interested in this project you don't mind soldering.)
In addition, I AM developing this to be a completely internal mod. With the need for an in-case DVD-Rom removed by the great Xecuter crew with 4975+ this easily makes room for a second HD in case (Many more if you got fancy with 2.5 inch drives). It can also be adapted to fit any custom case or setup you have going... but I was thinking of making it small enough to fit in the plastic cradles' "pocket" behind the stock drive. This is an ideal location based on it's function.
Many people have asked what USB has to do with this. Simply put... the application is going to need a way to communicate with the hardware to tell it what to do. USB was the bus of choice in this situation becuase of how easy it is to get access to and how relatively simple the communication between device and host is. Currently the first prototype IS receiving it's commands from an external computer via USB. This is to speed development and simplify debugging. The final version will of course be controlled from the XBOX internally."

ID_No_D_Mount feature in EvoX
>> theLameOne send us a mail explaining why the new EvoX feature called 'ID_No_D_Mount' (added in v1.8.3682) is so great.
Hacking games via patches has become a very convenient way of cheating. Until now, hacking a game that's not on your HDD required copying it onto the HDD or burning a new DVD. This is a ridiculous effort considering you've only changed the 3-4MB default.xbe file.
This new feature allows you to copy just the default.xbe file to the HDD and run the rest of the game from your disc.
It will work for all patches except ones that involve files other than default.xbe. At the moment, the only such instance of this is the Dead or Alive Extreme Beach volleyball nudity patch (but the saved game and money hacks will still work this way).
Example of usage (in the evox.ini):
Item "Dash","e:\dev\dash.xbe",ID_No_D_Mount
You can find game trainers from our tools section
Thanks goes to theLameOne for this tip.

Bunnie's Book "Hacking the Xbox"
>> Bunnie's Book will be released late May:
This hands-on guide to hacking was cancelled by the original publisher, Wiley, out of fear of DMCA-related lawsuits. Now, "Hacking the Xbox" is brought to you directly by the author, a hacker named "bunnie". The book begins with a few step-by-step tutorials on hardware modifications that teaches basic hacking techniques as well as essential reverse engineering skills. The book progresses into a discussion of the Xbox security mechanisms and other advanced hacking topics, with an emphasis on educating the readers on the important subjects of computer security and reverse engineering. Hacking the Xbox includes numerous practical guides, such as where to get hacking gear, soldering techniques, debugging tips and an Xbox hardware reference guide.
"Hacking the Xbox" confronts the social and political issues facing today's hacker. The book introduces readers to the humans behind the hacks through several interviews with master hackers.
"Hacking the Xbox" looks forward and discusses the impact of today's legal challenges on legitimate reverse engineering activities. The book includes a chapter written by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) about the rights and responsibilities of hackers, and concludes by discussing the latest trends and vulnerabilities in secure PC platforms.
You can pre-order this book from http://hackingthexbox.com for only $19.99 (once released it will be $24.99).
Select "Xbox-Scene BBS" if they ask you how you found the website :-) (no , we don't get a % - it's just for tracking)

Flash TSOP with no modchip installed
>> I saw there has been alot of discussion (forums , irc) if it is possible to flash the TSOP with habibi_xbox's way to boot linux without modchip.
You have access to the linux shell , so it will be possible to flash the onboard TSOP - but you will still need to open your xbox (and thus void your warranty) to solder the 2 jumpers to unlock TSOP-write.
I will release a tutorial about this soon ... in very short : solder the 2 tsop-write jumpers , boot linux using habibi_xbox's method and add the raincoat executable and the bios you want to flash in your saved file, telnet to your linux and use raincoat to backup/flash your TSOP.
Anything done to your Xbox is done at your own risk!
X-ecuter2Lite programmer + neXgen news
>> Team Xecuter posted a picture of their latest hardware revision of the X-ecuter2 Lite Programmer.
OK I promise this is the last revision to this hardware (hehe). It's now much smaller (as you can see from the comparison below) and a little cheaper to make. Expect it to be on sale in the next week or so at a very good price. We'll be working on a revision so you can programme Matrix and Cheapmod reliably using our own software.
On top the new revision , below the older hardware
They also posted an update about the neXgen development:
We're currently working on an operational pre-release. Still a few things being finalized (FTP, Skin / Theme support / Rendering Engine) but its almost there. We will be releasing a skin / theme development package for budding GFX guys, of course the best work will be included with subsequent releases. Much input from Team Assembly is in progress for the settings area of the dash. Our ultimate aim is for this project to become opensource like XBMP - so everyone gets to make this THE ultimate dashboard for your xbox.

Xbox-Linux confirms 'no modchip hack' + update to get video working
>> From http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/:
First solution for Project B issued Habibi_xbox has released a small savegame for 007 Agent Under Fire on Xboxhacker. We have now confirmed this savegame can be made to boot the Xbox Linux Live Plugin Distro on an unmodified Xbox! Note you can get video working by telnetting to the box, using
wget -o xbv http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/xbox-linux/xbv/xbv?rev=1.16
chmod +x xbv
./xbv -m 0
We will be building on Habibi_xbox's work and releasing more ways to run Linux on your unmodified Xbox.
This represents the first confirmed success in the Project B competition, which runs until December 31st 2003. As it is still not possible to use this exploit purely from HDD or USB dongle on an unmodded box (you must use a retail DVD of "007 Agent Under Fire" only), we hope this won't be the last great Project B entry we see.

More about the 'no modchip hack'
>> Here are other thoughts posted by the LOU-X crew:
We have looked at this exploit and have drawn a few conclusions. We are fairly sure he is NOT running unsigned code. Looking at the patch file he applies to the linux xbe, we are concluding he is changing the hash and signature portions of the xbe. We changed a byte in that signature and this exploit no longer worked. Thus we can conclude he is not running code independent of the signature. We believe the save game exploit somehow allows him to change the signature scheme, not sure how quite yet, but then executes code that he has been able to self sign based on his exploit of the signature.mostly likely, he modified the public key and left the signature system alone
Source: #linux-on-unmodded (EFnet) , Cheerio
note: At this moment , this method can ONLY be used to run xbox linux live. Maybe later it will be possible to use it to run homebrew utils. So for now you'll all still need modchips. We'll keep you updated ofcourse :)
Chameleon info released!
>> Team Xodus finally released more info about their new Chameleon modchip.

More info about the 'no mod hack'
>> This txt has been posted on the EFnet channel #linux-on-unmodded (Project LOU-X "Linux On Unmodded Xboxes"):
This "exploit," "hack," or "bug" as some are calling it stems from a seemingly, at the time of this article, simple "hack attack" known as a buffer overflow. Essentially overfilling the cup which is the memory process management of the operating system and slipping in your own piece of code right under its nose without it ever realizing. On conventional systems this attack would be used to slip in some way to link communication between the victims machine and your own remote machine, but this time the attack is on your own machine! Awaiting an interview with the programmer him/herself here at [LOU-X] we are essentially worshiping this God based on faith. We know generally how it works, but with technical specs we are forced to speculate.

Xbox-Linux without modchip ? part3
>> More and more people confirmed it on our forums ... xbox-linux live booting on a non modded xbox. (they could telnet into the xbox - so linux really boots!).
This is the first time in history the retail Xbox would actually boot unsigned code!
If you don't know what we are talking about - check 2 news articles below this one.
It is unknown what this means for homebrew software. The author of the exploit said this trick would only work for xbox-linux , so it has yet to be seen if people manage to run other homebrew software with it.
It will probably never offer what modchips do (boot to homebrew dash , larger HD , in memory patching , direct booting , ...) but this is still a HUGE new step in the xbox scene.
I saw people that mentioned it would be possible to flash the onboard bios - that's true (with raincoat) , but you still need to open your xbox and solder 2 jumpers to unlock the TSOP.
I have a feeling EA will sell alot of 007 Agent Under Fire games.
