Japanese Xbox 360 Lounge closing February 12
>> From gamespot.com:
For Japanese Xbox 360 fans (there are some) that haven't checked out Microsoft's Xbox 360 lounge in Tokyo's Omotesando, the next few weeks will be their last chance. Microsoft announced today that the building will officially close on February 12.
The Xbox 360 Lounge opened its doors on November 1 in preparation for the console's launch in the country on December 10. The Xbox 360 lounge was scheduled to be open through mid-January. However, Microsoft says it has decided to extend the lounge's operation to next month due to its popularity.
L.A. Xbox Pirates Indicted
>> From gamasutra.com and next-gen.biz:
Two Hollywood video game store owners (ACME Game Store) and a third man who were charged in December for allegedly pirating video games and installing them on modified Microsoft Corp. Xbox consoles were indicted on Thursday, according to the United States Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.
The men installed mod-chips and larger hard drives into Xbox consoles to allow them to play pirated games. The group was caught when private investigators working for the Entertainment Software Alliance conducted a sting during which they bought a modded Xbox for $265, complete 77 pirated games and a mod-chip.
The three have been accused of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and face up to 17 years in prison. They are scheduled an initial appearance in United States District Court in Los Angeles on Jan. 30.
Xbox 360 Gamepad Support for XBCD
>> A version of redcl0ud's XBCD(info) drivers has been modified by Matthew A. N. to support the Xbox 360 gamepad in Windows XP/2000/2003:
Although several people have verified these drivers work for them, they are still somewhat experimental. These drivers are licensed under the GNU GPL v2 and come with no warranty. The XBCD setup utility does not properly detect the controls, although windows does. You can still properly set all options in the XBCD setup utility and have them detected correctly in windows, they just will not show in the XBCD page of the utilty.
To install these patches, first install the XBCD v1.07 package then run the Install.bat file in this patch archive. This will install the modified drivers. Make sure you downloaded the correct version for your operating system. I was unable to use the winxp drivers in win2k, although I am not able to test any other configurations. Dhruvb11 has created a guide and instructional video detailing the installation and configuration procedure.
Development Overview: v0.1.0: Initial version of modified driver. v0.1.1: This version contains an alternate method to detect if a connected pad is an Xbox 360 pad. This means it will support more Xbox 360 compatiable gamepads. v0.2.0: Version 0.2.0 contains support for rumble and sets the LEDs on the pad so that they do not blink (or stay off). Enjoy :). v0.2.1: Version 0.2.1 has the left and right rumble motors, the X and Y buttons, and the right stick's axes swapped. Also the guide button now switches layouts. Thanks to Tiddles for some of this work. A USB ID for the Pelican XSZ Wired Controller was also added. v0.2.2rc1: Version 0.2.2 includes changes from Tacvek/guest2 and Tiddles. Their updates include a registry value for setting the gamepad LEDs, and changing the LEDs when the guide button is pressed. This release canidate is source only.
XboxMediaCenter (XBMC) 2006-01-11 CVS T3CH build
>> T3CH released a new CVS compile of XboxMediaCenter(info). This T3CH-compile is a BAREBONE package (with just a few thirdparty scripts and with just the default skin) compiled with XDK v5849. Here's the added/changed stuff from the changelog since the 2006-01-01 CVS release: * added: made dvdplayer pass on extradata from demuxer to codec, enables it to play almost anything ffmpeg can play (including some quicktime) * added: workaround to the playlist problem with randomize that will prevent the hang, but the underlying problem still exists. * changed: cleaned up codec selection for dvdplayer and enabled ffmpeg audio decoder * changed: disabled seeking when ff/rw in menu and partially fixed rewind. only fast rewinds work * changed: made dvdplayer use libmpeg2 for decoding mpeg1 video too and added reset code on decoding error * changed: edit xbe title truncates to 39 characters so as not to corrupt xbe header * changed: No TV mode in LCD doesn't auto-start in My Music anymore. * changed: Skin version to v1.90. -includes.xml added. -1 pixel font shadows added (use <shadowcolor> tag). -directional text added (use <angle> tag to state a degree) - label and buttons only. -font.xml can take a <color> and <shadow> tag for each font. -new animation system. -online manual is being updated with the new information. * changed: music and video context menus for better consistency * changed: speed improvement getting songs from the musicdatabase * changed: enabled experimental FF/RW in dvdplayer. it's abit shaky still * changed: iso9660:// protocol always tried to read a disc as a mode2 disc, even thou it was a mode1 disc. * changed: music playlists, playlists with music database items are now saved with the real path of the file instead of the musicdatabase URL * changed: moved list/thumb label formating to media window base class * changed: moved item caching out of music nav and files into the FileItemList ... rest of changelog (including many fixes): here.
Keep in mind this is a CVS snapshot of the current development tree. It's not an official (stable) point release. Use only if you know what you are doing.

IGN Predicts 2006
>> IGN has an interesting article about their predictions for 2006:
* Xbox's Last Gasp At E3 2005 Microsoft stated it wouldn't make any new Xbox games. Third parties, however, will follow a different plan. The Xbox has a healthy installed base of more than 21 million units, and companies such as Electronic Arts, Activision, THQ, Eidos, and Take-Two and others will continue to develop well-established brands on these systems. But don't expect to see brand new IPs (i.e. original game content) on Xbox in 2006. Expect a flurry of games such as Tony Hawk, Madden, the 2K series, and more annual games to hit the good old Xbox in its final year of real support. All AAA games will come to next generation games.
* Grand Theft Auto 4 Normally, we would predict that the series will come out first on PS2, then PC and Xbox 360 after. But we're thinking differently this year; we're feeling optimistic. We believe Microsoft is in negotiations with Rockstar right now to negotiate a much better deal for 360.
* Xbox Live Sees Increase in Subscriptions, XBLA Prices Since Xbox Live has so far proven to be such a great and unique addition to this burgeoning console generation, it should be no surprise that more and more games will heavily support it. With the increased popularity of Xbox Live will come the increased popularity of the already popular Xbox Live Arcade. As it gets more recognition as a legitimate platform to release games, more and more high profile titles will be made available for it. This is most apparent in the recent news that Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting would be appearing soon. Unfortunately, with high profile titles come higher prices. It wouldn't be surprising to start seeing XBLA games topping out around $30 by the year's end.
* The HD-DVD Drive Goes the Way of Sega's 32X Though it was just announced, the stand-alone HD-DVD drive from Microsoft will not prove successful. Why? As far as we understand it right now, the drive will be for movie playback. No official word yet on whether the HD-DVD drive will somehow be involved with games. With that in mind, take a look at what Microsoft big boss Bill Gates had to say out HD-DVD. Though he doesn't say it outright, he indicates that the future of the Xbox 360's movie capabilities are with Xbox Live and downloadable HD content, not with an HD-DVD drive. Second ... read on
Read More: xbox.ign.com.

360 Bugs: DOA4 Glitch Killing GameSaves and COD2 Lag Patch Coming
>> From gamespot.com:
A forum thread titled "WARNING: DOA4 has a major glitch" popped up on GameSpot's community. The original poster, gintheplacetobe, said that he had spent hours going through all the story modes and unlocking almost all the characters. "I played a few more sessions after that, and then booted up the game again only to find out that all of my [DOA4] save data was gone," wrote gintheplacetobe. "All of my unlocked characters, costumes, leader-board achievements, online ranking, ALL GONE!"
Was gintheplacetobe's experience an isolated case of bad luck, or a more widespread problem? After a several-day lag, a Tecmo rep indicated that there is a problem with some copies of the game. "We're aware of the issue you're referring to," the rep told GameSpot. "We're working to identify and resolve the potential problem with the technical folks at Microsoft." The rep said a patch would be coming soon.
So what can DOA4 players do in the meantime to ensure their hard-fought DOA4 victories don't vanish into thin air? Tecmo technical support says to do the following: (1) With your copy of DOA4 already inserted, turn on your 360 by pressing the "open tray" button. (2) Wait until all the information from your Gamer Profile is fully displayed on your Gamer Card, including achievements and other awards. (3) Close the tray again with DOA4 still inserted. Moore: Blu-ray Xbox 360 Add-on Possible
>> From gamespot.com:
Despite the obvious preference for HD-DVD, it seems Microsoft isn't willing to completely tie its fate to the format just yet. During CES 2006, Microsoft's Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing Peter Moore told Japanese site ITmedia that a Blu-ray Xbox 360 peripheral could appear for the system if the need arises. Moore admitted that Microsoft isn't sure of the next-generation format war's outcome, with the worst-case scenario being a repeat of the Beta vs. VHS war of the '80s.
However, he suggested that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since its uses an external drive. He also suggested that it's a weak point for PlayStation 3, saying Sony's system is stuck with Blu-ray. Microsoft hasn't announced how the HD-DVD peripheral will connect to the Xbox 360, but it's most likely going to use one of the system's USB ports. While the PS3 may come with Blu-ray out of the box, there's no apparent reason an external HD-DVD drive couldn't be hooked up through that system's USB ports.
PS2 due for a price drop, Xbox to follow?
>> From joystiq.com:
Analysts Chris Kwak and Jason Kraft of Susquehanna Financial Group analyzed the history of console price drops to determine that the PS2 is more than due a price drop (see graphic). They believe that there's a "very high probability" that the PS2 will be dropped in price this year, citing GameStop's Holiday 2006 sales conference call in which that company mentioned that Sony may drop the PS2 to $130 by E3 (second week of May) of this year.
Don't expect Microsoft to sit through a PS2 price drop quietly, though. The analysts expect the price of the original Xbox to fall by a third, from $150 to $100.
Xecuter: Multiple Xbox 360 ModChips from Different Teams in Development
>> Well ... in fact the article from team xecuter is mainly about one of the 'hot' discussions currently in the scene: the Team I.C.E. 'modchip' for the Xbox 360. Xecuter(info) received an email (which we received too) from Divineo giving even more reasons to think this modchip is fake:
The 360 chip is 99% a scam, we had booked tickets to go meet them, we were ready to make huge prepayment and more after we meet the guys at their office and see the working X-Box 360 with back-ups they 100% confirmed they had and it was no problem to show etc. Now at last second they cancelled, with some lame reason, those guys are scammers I really believe. They did the same to Xenium(info), backed off and changed completely what they said.
You might have noticed we ignored anything related to this chip so far here on the news (it's of course heavily discussed on our forums). The reason is very simple, I think most of our visitors trust our news for this type of information and we don't want to give attention to fakes/scams (good or bad news it's all publicity). So just like we don't post about fake bootdiscs, videos and alike (posting such things will just motivate even more people to do similar 'jokes'), new teams announcing a new modchip concept will have to provide enough proof (so no fake pictures, impossible OS features and what-not) or support from trusted teams/people/shops before we'll post about it.
Anyways (damn, now I still ended up talking about that chip on the news) ... what I wanted to post about is that team xecuter re-confirms that real 1st-gen modchips are coming in a reasonable amount of time to the Xbox 360, taking the doubt away from some people that they were referring to the 'thing' above in their previous news post:
We can assure you there will be more than one type of mod available from different groups in the coming weeks/months - just be patient. Gamers could influence next DVD format
>> From news.com:
For the last three years, consumer electronics makers, computer companies and Hollywood studios have been choosing sides in the battle over the dominant format for the coming high-definition DVDs--Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.
Yet after all the jockeying by these companies, it may be the relatively low-priced video game consoles that tip the balance toward one format--or prolong the stalemate for several more years. That's because the new game machines from Sony and Microsoft will play high-definition DVDs and may spur discs sales far faster than stand-alone players.
The Engadget Interview: Bill Gates
>> The guys over at Engadget posted an interview with Bill Gates about the Xbox360. Here's a short excerpt:
* Engadget: Are you ready for Sony later this year? * Bill Gates: Well, we think so. We've got a lot of things that they don't know that we're doing, so we'll keep them on edge a bit. We think that this whole thing has become very software centric; that is, the toolkits that let developers do their best creative work -- that plays to our software strength, as well as the idea of Live, where we had to learn a lot with Xbox 1, and the decision to require broadband, to go with VoIP, but we learned a lot about wanting to put things into the operating system so you can chat even while you're playing the games, it's really a level of richness that the games are built on top of that we didn't have that last time. We learned how to do that, we learned about contests and spectators, and so this is really a second generation of Live for us. It's very based on software expertise, so it will be interesting to see what Sony does in that dimension. We also now have a situation where if your friend has already bought an Xbox and you go to buy something that you want to play with them, it's not like last time where at his house you play his game and at your house you play your game. Now it's all online, you've got your achievements and things, so it will be a fascinating competition.
* Engadget: It seems like you're very firmly behind HD-DVD. Do you want Blu-ray to fail? * Bill Gates: I think the best thing would be to have a common standard for the industry that would include great things like Managed Copy. The studios have to be willing to take that risk to let consumers have that flexibility, otherwise I think they're just making a mistake that the next digital format may not get to critical mass at all, no matter which one it is. I also think the interactivity, there should be some alignment around that, but eventually there probably will be some coming together and it's not easy to predict when that will be.
Microsoft Abandons 90-Day Sales Forecast
>> From xbox360.ign.com:
According to a report published in this morning's Financial Times newspaper, Microsoft has abandoned its highly ambitious sales target of 3 million Xbox 360s delivered into the hands of consumers at the end of the console's initial 90-day introduction period. Instead, the company will focus on the goal announced at last week's Consumer Electronics Show of 4 million to 5.5 million units sold by the close at the company's fiscal year at the end of June.
According to Peter Moore, chief of the company's Xbox 360 division, the revision of sales estimates reflected the fact that "nothing's perfect - [the Xbox 360 is] a complex piece of hardware that includes 1,700 different parts. Every now and again the line will slow down because something's happened and there'll be a component that didn't make it that morning."
1up WTF Moments of 2005
>> I didn't post many 'top lists' for 2005, but I thought this one was kinda original ... The 1up 'Top 10 WTF (What The Fuck) moments of 2005', and coming in on number 1 for 2005 is the "Xbox 360 'Tard Pack"
'Tard Pack: $299.99 for an Xbox 360 with no wireless controllers, no hard drive, no backwards compatability, and naturally, no downloadable content. So you save a hundred bucks. Except you'll need to spend forty of that on a memory unit, anyway. But hey, you can still afford one more 360 game. The only announcement more WTF worthy will be if someone knowingly buys it.
Read More (incl. 9 other 'WTF moments'): 1up.com.
And here's Major Nelson's (Microsoft's Xbox Live Director of Programming) reaction:
I guess it's better then not being on any lists at all, huh? We all know that the Core System, or as 1up calls it the "Tard Pack", is not for everyone...but people must want them since they are also sold out everywhere. By the way, I forgot to mention that we have a third manufacturer (Celestica) coming online in February to help ease the availability pain. Hopefully they'll won't be making just Xbox 360 Core Systems. ;)
CES 2006: Peter Moore Interview
>> GameInformer.com has a very good interview with Peter Moore:
* GI: At the CES Keynote one of your biggest announcements concerned an external HD-DVD drive. How are you going to connect this to your 360? * Moore: It's actually several ways we're working on right now. I'm not going to give you any details, but we built this box with a view to - and J Allard being the guy that really has done the thinking - to the flexibility of where life will be in 2007, 2008, 2009. We call it future proofing. So the ways that you can connect - there are a number of different ways - I don't want to get into it right now. The most obvious sat right in the front there.
* GI: The USB? * Moore: USB. You could absolutely do it. But we may or may not choose that route.
* GI: So why not announce at E3 that you're coming out with a new version of the 360 with an HD-DVD drive? * Moore: How would you feel about that?
* GI: I'd be pretty pissed off because I've already spent $400. (laughs) So it's not to say you guys won't have something next holiday? * Moore: I never say never. But it doesn't make a lot of sense. The key is you built a house. We've spent a lot of money building a house. And because you want a third garage you don't go and buy a new house. You add on the third garage to the two you've already got. You just take advantage that you've got the basic infrastructure. You've invested in it. It does a lot for you. You add on the third garage. And that's what we're talking about here.
Hexic HD Achievement Hacks Don't Touch Xbox LIVE
>> From Major Nelson (Microsoft Xbox Live Director of Programming):
There was some misinformation floating around last week that I wanted to clear up. Specifically, that folks are cheating at Hexic and earning achievements or getting high scores that they got by cheating. I got an email from the Xbox Live Arcade team where they told me: We're seeing reports of people hacking Hexic HD using the European Kiosk disk hack. The truth of the matter is that we actually removed the code from the kiosk version of the game that awards achievements and Gamerscore and posts high scores so the reports are false. While Hackers can play the game and trigger the achievement awarded animation as if is still there but they don't actually earn anything since they can't connect to Xbox Live.
So there you have it, keep working on your high score in Hexic with complete confidence that the folks above you earned their way to the top.
CES 2006: CoolIT Liquid-Chilled Xbox 360
>> End December we already wrote about the CoolIT Systems Retrofit Liquid-Chilled Cooling System for Xbox 360 (see press release and first images/details). The guys over at hexus.net went to CES 2006 and had a chance to actually get their hands on the real thing:
The first thing to be aware of is that this isn't just a bolt-on-the-side extra for you Xbox 360, this is a serious case mod as all the Xbox 360 casing under that shiny blue CoolIt casing isn't there anymore... that's right kids, this thing is set into the Xbox 360 meaning that pretty much half the side case is now gone... a fair chunk from the underside is missing too to allow for the pipework.
Looking at these pics you'd be right in thinking that this is a pretty serious mod and hacking into your Xbox 360 with a Dremel to fit a cooler is something that you might think is best left to those that know what they're doing. That's what the CoolIt guys think too so you won't have to fit it yourself, CoolIt are working right now to train up a bunch of fitters which you'd send your Xbox 360 to for fitting. Of course, your warranty is still voided, regardless of who chops your Xbox 360 up, but at least this way you know it won't blow the thing up if a professional does the job.
