US videogame pirate sentenced to over 4 years imprisonment
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
A court in California has handed down a hefty jail sentence to a man who is described as one of the leaders of infamous game piracy group Razor1911, which was one of the best-known online providers of cracked game software.

Sean Michael Breen, 38, pleaded guilty to charges of copyright infringement and mail fraud, and was given a 50 month sentence along with three years of supervised release.

His sentence is reported to be toughest yet handed down to any member of the "warez" scene, which was targeted by the US Customs Service in a 14-month undercover investigation which has so far yielded 40 arrests worldwide.

Part of WinNT4 and Win2000 sources leaked? *updated2*
>> From neowin.net:
Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.
From zdnet.com:
The 203MB file expands to just under 660MB. The entire source code is believed to be about 40GB, meaning that the file circulating would be only a fraction of the full code base--if it is authentic.
Ruiu (security consultant and the organizer of the CanSecWest security conference), who has seen the file, believes it to be authentic. "It looks real," he said. "You can't build Windows, however. It's just a bunch of chunks of the operating system."

"It's definitely not a good thing if black hats have the source code," said Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager with antivirus company Symantec's security response center. If the source code has been released, "the underground can look at the code without legitimate security researchers being able to find vulnerabilities first."
But Microsoft downplayed any security issue.
"If a small section of Windows source code were to be available, it would be a matter of intellectual property rights rather than security," Microsoft said.
From eweek.com:
BetaNews has learned that Thursday's leak of the Windows 2000 source code originated not from Microsoft, but from long-time Redmond partner Mainsoft.
The leaked code includes 30,915 files and was apparently removed from a Linux computer used by Mainsoft for development purposes. Dated July 25, 2000, the source code represents Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.

dvd2xbox 0.5.4
>> A new version of dvd2xbox(info) has been released.
What's new/fixed:
* ACL: fixed RM command
* ACL: replaced ED and EF by EP (exclude path). Multiple entries are supported.
* Maincopy: added samba client for XBOX game, DVD and ISO mode. ACL processing and auto patching aren't supported via smb (Thanks to darkie).
* added a online settings menu and moved several entries from dvd2xbox.xml to it.
* added a option to disable RM command while processing ACL.
* ported newest libdvdcss because it is supposed to fix some bugs on windows platforms. However I still got some dvds which aren't properly decrypted. Therefore I changed the decryption to 'title' which produces some better results. That's from the readme:
"title is the fallback when all other methods have failed. It does not rely on a key exchange with the DVD drive, but rather uses a crypto attack to guess the title key. On rare cases this may fail because there is not enough encrypted data on the disc to perform a statistical attack, but in the other hand it is the only way to decrypt a DVD stored on a hard disc, or a DVD with the wrong region on an RPC2 drive."
* moved logfiles to dvd2xbox/logs to keep the game directory clean.
* many internal improvements and bugfixes.

Gentoox: New kernel with Focus overscan support released
>> From ShALLaX on :
* I'm going to do something silly and assume this patch works. I've tested it on a Conexant and a Focus Xbox, and found there was one *slight* problem... HDTV was broken. However, this got fixed so now it works perfectly. THERE IS NO HDTV SUPPORT FOR FOCUS XBOXES -- just before anyone emails me telling me "I CNAT SELECT TEH HDTV", I'm telling you, it WONT WORK.
The reasom im "assuming" this works, is because I havent tried magic with the packaged fix (I applied it manually). However, its a pretty safe assumption to make.
Gentoox is now 100% free from the xbv executable, though xbvset will remain named as-is to avoid confusion and deprecating documents etc... The only thing that is ever changed is the linuxboot.cfg file. All HOC and VOC settings go in this file!
There is one thing I cant get an answer to, but I'm almost certain it wont work... component cables with Focus probably wont work. SCART should though. But if anyone wants to prove me wrong, try it for me then post on the forums or email me.
These new Focus drivers were not coded by me, they were done by dmp, and the HDTV fix was done by Oliver Schwartz (He's rescued me on more than one time with respect to video drivers! Thanks!)
With that said, since I made some more tweaks to magic, all you'll need to do is run "magic" to get the updated patches you need. Run "magic available" first to see if "kernel" and "displaytools" are highlighted as needing updates, if not, then "magic fix kernel && magic fix displaytools", since you might have been unlucky enough to get a BETA kernel that didnt work if you ran magic at the wrong time!
I'll be running magic on two fresh Gentoox Home(info) 3.0c installations (One Conexant, one Focus) over night and I'll post my results in the morning to let you know if everything is well. So paranoid users might want to hold off until then.
(Oh, and I'm assuming by this post, you understand it should now be safe to run magic again!).
I'll post these again so I get no needless emails/ forum posts:
Known issues:
NTSC does not work on PAL TVs which claim they are compatible with NTSC since really all these TVs are PAL60 which uses NTSC's scan rate, with PAL colours, meaning that all the colours appear messed up.
HOC settings under 13 when using 800x600 on a Focus Xbox will cause overscanned lines to wrap around, for this reason, xbvset does not allow you to enter a value lower than 13 when using a Focus Xbox and 800x600.
HOC and VOC settings resize the screen from the top left, not from the center. This is because auto-recentering has not yet been implemented.

* Absolute 100% success. That is to say, both the Focus and Conexant Xboxes updated via magic correctly without any hitches, the new drivers work perfectly on both Xboxes, HDTV still works on the Conexant box. Ive tested 640x480 and 800x600 in both PAL and NTSC (PAL60 has been removed since only XBV can set this mode, which doesnt work with Focus), and both performed as expected. So if you've been waiting for an all clear signal to download this new patch, this is most definitely it! Go for it, run magic!

Gentoox: New magic in place and New kernel comming *updated*
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
* Ok, if you have run magic lately, you'll have noticed the database maintenance script that gets run. This is to prepare your system for the improved magic script! So far I've got the available screen finished, the rest shouldn't be much of a problem.
* I've done this a little bit earlier than I would have liked to... but it was unavoidable. The changes I had made would have made the old magic unusable, so the new one is in place. Hopefully you wont notice any difference except for the "available" screen (that is, if all goes well). What I'll do is install Home on one of my xboxes, then leave magic running overnight and see if any errors arise. If you dont want to risk your Gentoox installation, then dont run magic until further notice!

* Stay tuned for a new kernel some time tomorrow with Focus overscan support and Focus RGB cable support! Focus support will include 800x600, but no HDTV/ X2VGA support as of yet.
The patch will comprise of a new kernel and an updated displaytools xbvset script. Focus and Conexant will work together, both accepting (the same) hoc and voc settings!
*Update*
Running two final installation checks for the new kernel - one on a Conexant Xbox and one on a Focus Xbox. If these are sucessful then I will release the updated patches.

* Fixed a load of errors with the displaytools patch. Run magic to update.

MAMEoX update
>> From Erik on mameox.sourceforge.net:
I had a couple minutes to check out the forums here and at xbox-scene last week, and I saw more than a couple posts asking about the status of the project. So I've decided to make an official announcement to answer that question once and for all.

First off, a little knowledge about how the project is organized and who's who around here is in order.

Testers/General "Non-development" Staff: Falz, noodle (enkak and many others unofficially)
These guys do alot of the footwork (testing, interfacing directly w/ the users, website maintenance, release announcements) in the development (and do a great job at it), and mainly try to take as much work off the programming team's hands as possible.

Graphics/UI Design: r4dius
Without r4dius none of the UI gets changed. He's also not an active programmer though, so implementing changes requires some work from the programming team.

Programming: me (Erik), opcode
Here's where the trouble starts. The majority of the past programming has been done by me, with some nice bits and pieces contributed by opcode. In general though, when I'm not working, the whole project is stalled.

So, now I hope it's clear that (currently) I'm the major bottleneck here. In the beginning of the project, this was no problem. I started MAMEoX(info) on a 4 week vacation, and was able to devote quite a bit of my time to it during a general lull period at my real job. Unfortunately as time went on, I found it harder and harder to find the time required to work on development. I spent alot of time on business trips away from my XBOX, and eventually I more or less had to put MAMEoX on my "way, way, backburner."
This is more or less where we are at this point in time. I've found some time to merge in the 0.79 MAME core (hopefully it will undergo testing over the next few days and will be released), but I have spent a total of 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds working on new features (such as VMM, lightgun, etc...). In addition, my development XBOX is back at my parent's house in NY, and I'm still in Vienna, Austria.
There is some good news though. I've decided to leave my job here and fully intend to be available to work on MAMEoX again starting around the middle of April (my current plan is to be on a plane back to NY April 6th, and I don't expect that to change too much). I will probably spend some time enjoying the unemployed life, and I may end up doing some contract work for my current employer, but I expect that a very large chunk of my time will be spent working on MAMEoX again.

That said, MAMEoX is, and has always been, a fully open-source project, so I'd be more than delighted to alleviate the bottleneck by adding programmers to the project. Anyone who is interested can email me at my sourceforge account, and if you can give some idea as to what you'd like to work on, how much C/C++ experience you have, etc... that'd be great. I'll say right now that I can be somewhat anal about code style, and I'm definitely anal about commenting, so if you can't deal with that you will probably not have any fun.

So that's my official announcement, and the official answer regarding the status of the project. Don't expect to see any major updates (apart from the _possibility_ of the 0.79 core, assuming it passes testing) until sometime in April at the earliest (or until we add some more coders to the project).
Avalaunch: German community + Cheating in logo contest
>> From teamavalaunch.com:
* A new German Avalaunch(info) community site is online now. All you Germans, go visit http://www.avalaunch.de now!

* We've uncovered a cheater (thanks CyKiller). In light of this, we've refined the logo contest rules a bit.
Cheating is not tolerated. Anyone caught copying other people's work will have all their logos automatically disqualified, and not permitted to submit any more entries to the competition (along with being publicly humiliated).

Gentoox: more changes coming to magic...
>> From ShALLaX on gentoox.shallax.com:
I've been pretty quiet for a while (University work has loaded me down), but I thought I'd make an appearance to show things are still moving along. What I'm actually waiting for is a working focus driver, once this comes along, I'll release new Pro and Home versions. For now, I'm working on some changes to magic which will reintroduce friendly patch names (no numbers in them, or obscure names anymore). Also, you wont need to run "magic fix blah" to update the patch, when I make an update, I'll simply be able to increment a patch version counter and all you'll need to do is run magic. I've got the 'available' portion working (kinda). The database needs sorting out a bit (some of the version numbers are wrong).

There's a preview screenshot on gentoox.shallax.com.

007 - Modified Morden
>> From nfo:
This is a slightly modified and updated version of Morden's Audio hack.
The game save has been tested to work on xboxs from version 1.0 to 1.3.
If you have problems with Morden's original hack, then try this.
This includes the BFM version of TeamXecuter's 4981 bios.
Also, Boxplorer has been added to the menu. Just follow the same instructions as Morden's hack to install. This is the only release of the modified version.

(Japan) Xbox Kasumi Blue limited-edition with DOA pillow
>> The "Xbox Kasumi Blue limited-edition" was already announced some time ago, but what's new is that the system will also include something special :-)
From wired.com:
You can't take the voluptuous, bikini-clad vixens from Tecmo's Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball to bed with you -- but if you buy an Xbox in Japan this March, Microsoft will give you the next best thing.
This month marks the two-year anniversary of the launch of the Xbox video game system in Japan, and so far, things have not gone as planned for the Redmond, Washington-based software giant. In fact, Microsoft's entry hasn't yet sold 500,000 units, making it one of the worst-performing game consoles in the country's history.

To celebrate the Japanese release of Dead or Alive Online next month, Microsoft is rolling out a special edition Xbox set with an extra-special bonus -- a dakimakura, or "hugging pillow," that features a life-size, front-and-back print of teenage character Kasumi in a skimpy bikini.

The Xbox Kasumi Blue limited-edition set hits Japanese shelves March 25. In addition to the Kasumi pillow, it includes a clear-blue Xbox system, one similarly colored controller, the DVD movie playback kit and remote control, the Dead or Alive Online software and 12 free months of Microsoft's Xbox Live online broadband gaming service. It will cost ¥22,800 ($216).
